IMAGE DESCRIPTION
a collection of images, screenshots of popular tumblr posts with images of ace attorney characters overlayed to suggest it’s the characters who made the posts
in the first image, ema skye is saying “you people can’t be crying about blonde blue eyed men” with a low-opacity image of klavier gavin suggesting that she’s talking about him as he is blonde and blue-eyed. trucy wright replies with “naruto means everything to us” to which ema responds “ok sorry carry on”
in the second image, klavier, clearly in distress says “oh gods my boyfriend isn't home and I forget the english word for this thing and it's bAD he usually helps but i CANT”. athena replies “I WILL ASSIST?”. klavier says “you know that little sea bug with the stupid hands and it hasa home but it changes homes sometimes because it gets too big for it?? what is it???” athena suggests “Hermit crab??” and klavier triumphantly exclaims “THAT'S THE BITCH” in bold and italics
in the third image, it reads “someone: oh god. how are you coping with that. me: i’m not. i’m not coping.” with a distraught picture of klavier
in the fourth image, klavier says “die girlies reading this” with an emoji of a blushing face surrounded by love hearts. he replies to himself “oh my god I meant in a german accent I did not mean to wish death upon girlies”. franziska von karma replies “The girlies reading this post” with a picture of a skeleton exploding
in the fifth image, godot posts a picture of a coffee machine fastened to the dashboard of a car. the caption is “Hertella Auto Kaffeemachine. This Dash-Mounted Coffee Maker Is Likely the Rarest Volkswagen Accessory.” franziska replies “Getting into a KarAkciddent and splashing 3 cups of FükkenScälden all over myself”
in the sixth image, maya fey says “if she's your girl why is she infiltrating area 51 with me”. kay faraday responds “Because our relationship is good like that. Because l love her, but don't need to be by her side every minute. Because she's a healthy, well rounded, person with her own separate interests, that I fully support but don't need to take part in.” to which maya says “thanks for respecting women bro”
in the seventh image, klavier gavin says “vagueposting about people but in approval”. he replies to himself with “some of yall are so0o big brained and articulate and always correct and sexy. not saying who tho”. a picture of a blushing apollo justice indicates that klavier is talking about him.
in the eighth image, ema posts a picture of a white robotic lobster, captioned simply “robot lobster”. a confused trucy asks “why” and pearl fey responds “robster”

ace attorney characters at karaoke
Phoenix and Maya: going HOG WILD on the classic Disney back catalog and all the best duets of the 80s.
Phoenix can actually sing quite well; he’s not going to have a side gig as a rock star but he was definitely good enough to be an actual singer at the Borscht Bowl Club instead of a shitty pianist if he’d wanted to
(he perhaps did not want to do something he actually cared about for money at that point in his life)
Maya cannot sing for SHIT but by God she’s not going to let that stop her
they do a great “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and take turns with who takes which role (Meg or the Muses) on “(I Won’t Say) I’m In Love”
they also do “Friends on the Other Side” because they think they’re funny
only in the first half of the evening, though, otherwise they end up kind of weepy drunk about it
If Miles is there: Phoenix will, at some point near the end of the evening, break out an incredibly sappy dad rock ballad. absolutely everyone can tell what’s going on, he’s not even trying to be subtle about it.
like, we’re talking “Faithfully” by Journey and “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel levels of sappy
I find it hard to picture a karaoke bar in Japanifornia having “Long Time Running” by the Tragically Hip in its repertoire but if I remember that this is a goofy tumblr post and there are no gods or kings, he would absolutely do that too, and if he did, Miles would break sufficiently to kiss him in front of all of their employees
Miles does actually come to karaoke a lot but he absolutely does not sing, he’s just here to be an appreciative audience.
on exactly one occasion, he’s been successfully dragged up to the mic. it took the combined forces of
Maya Fey
the absence of anyone who works for him
the Steel Samurai theme song
the extremely incorrect assumption that a Long Island Iced Tea is to a regular iced tea as Irish coffee is to regular coffee
incidental PSA: It Is Not
the resulting video is an heirloom of the Fey clan and one of Phoenix Wright’s most precious possessions
Franziska: tags along when she’s visiting Miles. allegedly this is against her will but she sure does keep showing up
if she could sing, you wouldn’t get her off the mic all night, but she can’t carry a tune in a bucket and she knows it, and a von Karma is not bad at things in public
but she does keep showing up
did once whip Larry Butz senseless for the hatchet job he did on a Billie Eilish song
originally I was going to have this be Tori Amos or somebody and then I remembered that Franziska von Karma is a fucking zoomer
Larry was not invited, by the way
Gumshoe: canonically a reggae guy! kind of sheepish and bashful until talked into his first song of the night, after which he has a really great time
Maggey Byrde: I consulted @ozawamitsuko for this and got an excellent answer which is
breaks out the classic Britney and for three minutes is suddenly EXTREMELY SEXY as well as adorable
the hearts orbiting Gumshoe’s head must be seen to be believed
then immediately trips over the mic cord and lands face-first on the ground
she is stone cold sober
Ema Skye: every single thing about this woman indicates that she listens to an absolute fuck ton of They Might Be Giants
who basically have one song that shows up on karaoke setlists so at this point she absolutely KILLS “Istanbul Not Constantinople”
Lana Skye, out of jail by this point: doesn’t get near the mic until she’s had at least two drinks and a great deal of friendly persuasion, at which point she, with the most deadpan facial expression ever seen on Earth, selects “Jailhouse Rock.”
she actually has a very weak voice and no range whatsoever but no one actually hears that much of her singing because they are, after an initial beat of shock, losing their fucking minds
Klavier Gavin: always checks to see if his own songs are available, but he's way too much of a perfectionist to enjoy doing karaoke performances of them, so he doesn’t
also, like. he does have a sense of sportsmanship and that’s just not on
honestly being at karaoke when you’re an actual charting rockstar is kind of unsportsmanlike by default, and as much as he likes being the center of attention he also likes being liked and likes it when people have fun, so he mostly gets everyone else in the room to pick what they think would be funny to make him sing
he does a pretty good “Uptown Funk” and a damn solid “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under”
Ema Skye has tried him on “I Feel Pretty” and he did not hesitate a second
Apollo Justice: regards the microphone with such profound trepidation that everyone assumes he cannot sing a note
naturally him acting like the mic is a guillotine makes every single one of his friends and colleagues decide that it is their highest calling in life to make him do it
at which point Thalassa “Lamiroir” Gramarye’s son sighs, loosens his tie, and breaks out an effortless note-perfect rendition of Nina Simone’s “Feelin’ Good” that leaves Klavier Gavin literally incapable of speech
and mysteriously disinclined to stand up
(after taking that first plunge Apollo gets a lot more willing to sing but he’s still kind of shy about it)
Athena Cykes: okay I’m actually only halfway through Dual Destinies but I nonetheless feel this in my heart to be true.
Sober: Call Me Maybe -- Carly Rae Jepsen
Lightly buzzed: Woman -- Kesha
Fucking wasted: Thot Shit -- Megan Thee Stallion
she skips the n-words because she has manners but she does not change a single other lyric
as drunk karaoke rapping goes, she’s not half bad
and speaking of karaoke rapping: you know that Simon Blackquill listens to Linkin Park. you know. I do not give a shit about the timeline, that is a fundamental fact of the universe.
honestly “Bleed It Out” does still kind of slap in 2022 and will still do so at karaoke in 2027
Taka has of course tagged along to karaoke and is EXTREMELY offended at how bad a perch Simon has suddenly become
I’m picturing a (Japanese-style) karaoke bar for all of this which is why Trucy and Pearl are Madames Not Appearing In This Text Post but should a family-friendly karaoke location make a convenient appearance
I just feel like Pearl’s go-to is Celine Dion
no, she cannot hit those notes, but she’s going to give it an earnest attempt
meanwhile Trucy and Phoenix have a shared love of classic showtunes and are having a FANTASTIC time
“wait, go back a few poionts, how is Athena in the bar and drinking, then” we don’t ask questions about Japanifornia law
actually if you’re prominently wearing a defense attorney’s badge the bartender probably assumes you’re old enough to drink
“so she’s committing underage drinking in a room filled with every branch of law enforcement” technically they don’t know what’s in that glass. could be juice.

“That glimmerous fop…” ✨“Frau detective!”
[Image Description: Two digital drawings coloured in warm tones and a lineless style of Ace Attorney characters as they appear in Apollo Justice.
The first is of Ema Skye from the chest area up, drawn with warm brown skin and her usual outfit while holding a bag of Snackoos. Her nails are painted black and she also wears small gold and silver earrings. She lifts one snackoo up between her fingers as she looks in annoyance to the right side of the image. Several yellow and red zigzag lines surround her to indicate irratation, the background a light yellow and one side of her face slightly in shadow.
The second drawing is of Klavier Gavin, also drawn from the bust up, with darker brown skin than in canon and curly golden-yellow hair. He is raising one hand to his head and snapping his fingers, smiling brightly to his left side. Similar to Ema, his face is slightly in shadow and is wearing more silver piercings than in-game. Instead of Ema's lines about his head, various purple music notes are floating in the air. The background is a light purple.
The last two images are again the drawings of Ema and Klavier but altered so the colours are muted and have a pinkish tinge. The order of the pictures has been changed, Klavier's now comes first and Ema's is second. /End Image description]

Hey fun thing here but, just look at all of these duel disks and their colored lines and just-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-do you notice how each duel disk reflects a certain color of the six Ignises? Each of our main cast has a certain color attached to them - Blue Angel and Akira blue, Ema and Yusaku purple (though the latter is due to Ai’s presence), Go yellow, Revolver red - and it’s almost keenly interesting to note that these are often the kids who are suspected to be a part of the Hanoi Project or, at the very least, the corresponding adult to one of the suspected kids (as Akira is to Aoi and Ema kind of seems to be to Yusaku in episode 30).
This may seem a bit weird and obvious for me to bring up - I mean, yeah, it’s super obvious that Blue Angel represents the blue kid bc she’s associated to blue and Revolver represents the red kid bc he’s associated to red so of course their duel disks are those colors bc ~color schemes~ amirite?
But, well, take a look at something peculiar from episode 30 in special regards  to Specter:
Tumblr media
His duel disk is orange. There is nothing in his ~color scheme~ to suggest a reason for why his duel disk needs to be orange. It’s almost off-putting too, in a way, because I look at this picture and I just go: “huh, shouldn’t his duel disk be green because his outfit is white and green?”
Well, perhaps this is another subtle indicator that Specter is one of the children involved in the incident. It’s already been suggested by Dr. Kogami in episode 12 that Specter may have had some part in it so it’s not unlikely that he is one of the last children. We know he’s important, we know there’s a reason why the ED and OP insists he’s a vital part to the plot when all we ever see is little flicks of him here and there, and what better way to make him relevant than to make Specter one of the last kids we have left?

I know so many bigoted authors that show their ass in author groups and lists, thinking that they are in amongst friends of the same mind. I am so sickened by them and will never buy their work.

wait are we doing characters that would be great duos? In that case have you considered Blackquill and Ema
Ohohoho FANTASTIC. These two are such bastards and everyone fears them whenever they're on a case together.
Their very first interaction was Ema asking him "can taka eat snackoos?" and blackquill sighing bc UGH another person who wants to treat taka like a cute little birdy, and he says "No." and Ema's like "good. I don't want to share" and she immediately tips the rest of the snackoos into her mouth, chews, and swallows. And this is the first time anyone other than Edgeworth hasn't been terrified of him, so he's just like :) new friend to terrify people with
Seeing them together is kind of hilarious bc Simon is like 6'2", muscular as hell, carries around a sword and a hawk... And Ema is just a five foot something scientist who happens to be full of rage.
Also I feel like Simon would absolutely remind Ema of Lana. Putting on a cold act and confessing to a crime bc they think their younger sibling (or younger sibling figure) did it... Yeah. She can see right through his whole Terrifying Samurai Act, and she doesn't let all of his talk about prison scare her. He's like "heh! I once knew a man who chewed his way through a prison wall to try to escape! This is nothing" and Ema's like "that's real fucken neato, pal"
Also blackquill probably knows the vague details of Ema's past with Lana, so at some point she sees a blue badger sign and flinches and no hesitation he pulls out his sword and cuts it in half. That's the first indication blackquill has ever shown that he knows anything about Ema's past, and there's a second where Ema's like "ugh. He isn't gonna treat me any differently now, is he?" but then blackquill immediately says the blue badger design is ugly now get a move on skye-dono we have work to do

the eight image has athena saying “On the one side HRT gives me titties on the other it is impossible to just jack off sans porn for me...” to which trucy replies “Sans porn, you say?” and athena replies “Ah a new and very unfortunate drawback to being french has appeared”
the ninth image has maya fey saying “the thing the steel samurai writers don't understand is that every character is gay and trans. I know it though.” miles responds with a laughably low quality screenshot of maya’s post, with the words steel samurai scribbled out. phoenix replies with “for just pennies a day, you could help my boyfriend afford screenshots with more than 7 pixels”
the tenth image has klavier saying “I'm crying my beautiful husband has wrapped the most limp wristed pathetic sickly blunt in the world”. klavier responds with two pictures of said blunt, and my God does it suck. it’s impossibly thin, and looks like a sliver of paper. there cannot possibly be any weed in that. he has captioned the images with “how”. a picture of apollo suggests that he is the beautiful husband that has rolled this awful thing.

I did some Exploring yesterday and then I wrote a thing and I can’t be bothered to properly edit it yet so I am going to just let you read it as is :) please enjoy 800 words of Kay and Ema bullying Klavier for his “wait, that’s illegal” attitude.
“Hey, Music Boy,” Kay calls across the breakroom to Klavier, waving her phone in the air. “Come check out these pictures I took on mine and Ema’s last date.”
Klavier, by now being used to requests such as these (though still slightly caught off-guard by the notion that Ema Skye would go out on dates), makes his way across to where Kay is sprawled backwards across some “modern” office furniture.
“You went somewhere with nice scenery, I take it?” he asks, as a general conversation-starter, but just gets Kay’s cell phone shoved under his nose.
“Isn’t this place so cool? They ripped out all the interior walls, which was kinda annoying because I didn’t have a copy of the floor plan and so there was no way I could even try to use Little Thief to recreate it, but it was fun to try and figure out what room was what based on, like, the tiling and fireplaces.”
Klavier hmms and nods, watching the pictures go past as Kay swipes through them. When she reaches the fifth or sixth one, though, he startles.
“Is that a...fence? Around the property?” he asks. Kay nods.
“Yeah—they replaced it pretty recently, I guess, ‘cause all the stuff on the internet didn’t mention it. Wasn’t a big deal, though.”
“What do you mean it wasn’t a big deal?” Klavier runs through the photos he’s already seen in his mind. “Wait, some of your photos were taken inside the house. Did you...were you and Ema trespassing?”
Kay purses her lips and reclines in her chair. If she’d been chewing gum, she would have taken the opportunity to blow a large bubble. “Depends. Is it trespassing if there was a giant hole in the fence that had clearly been there a while?”
Klavier’s expression takes a turn for the severe. “You can’t do that! The presence of the fence indicates that it is the responsibility of the general public to stay out of the area!”
“And? It was fine.”
“I cannot believe this. I should call the authorities on--” Klavier breaks off, having come to an awkward realization.
“...were you seriously just about to suggest that you should call the police on us? On Detectives Ema Skye and Kay Faraday?”
“...I have no comment.”
“You totally were! God, lighten up, you narc.”
“I stand against crime as a general principle. The fact that you’re both officers makes it worse! You should be leading by example, being reputable.”
Kay rolls her eyes. “You know, I can’t believe that all that PR shit you did with your band wasn’t just for show. You really are just like this.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Oh, nothing. But seriously, would it kill you to lighten up? Take a vacation. Jaywalk. A little criminal activity is good for a person.”
Klavier frowns, his eyebrows pulling together. He takes a deep breath, as though he’s ready to start on a longwinded lecture about why being law-abiding is every good citizen’s duty--
Except he’s interrupted before he can begin.
“Can it, fop—I can already tell you’re about to bore us all to death. Kay, I don’t get why you keep trying to involve him in our lives more than absolutely necessary.”
Ema Skye strides into the room, barbed tongue and sarcasm almost indistinguishable from her usual demeanor—but the sharp words are less biting these days, their vitriol lessened in the presence of her girlfriend of three months.
“Babe! C’mon, he’s not that bad most of the time. You’re just still bitter about that one time he tried explaining a motive for murder using music metaphors.”
Ema huffs. “And rightfully so! I shouldn’t have to research weird Italian terms for how loud something is in order to get through case documentation—the German was bad enough.”
Klavier seems to have recovered somewhat. “Might I remind the Fräulein that she studied abroad in both Germany and Italy?”
“No you may not.” Ema catches sight of the pictures still displayed on Kay’s phone. “Oh, those came out really well—can you send me those?”
“Yeah, totally. As long as you promise to find somewhere else like this we can go explore sometime.”
“Somewhere legal?” Klavier interjects, trying to sound casual.
“What are you, a cop?” Ema replies, rolling her eyes.
“No, you’re the cops here.”
“Exactly. So it doesn’t matter.”
Klavier makes a wounded noise. “This is why nobody has faith in our justice system. Police corruption, going all the way to the top…”
“Hey! Don’t badmouth Gummy! He’s the best police chief we’ve ever had!” Kay’s indignation isn’t feigned. Klavier raises his hands in surrender.
“Okay, okay, ja, you win. This has been a lovely talk, Fräuleins, but I do believe I hear my most recent trial documents calling my name.”
“Oh, sure, leave before you lose. But are you sure it’s your case files calling your name? I’ve heard some awfully interesting rumors about you and Apollo Justice…”
Klavier walks away before he’s dragged into that conversation.

It punches me emotionally that Phoenix either doesn't have motivation on his own or that he lets motivations inspired by other people push away things he likes, like his art degree. There's so much issues to unttangle there, like lacking direction in his life, depression, self-worth issues, identity, and so on. Also, for Kristoph's trap, it's possible that Phoenix just. Wasn't surprised that it happened. Even without potentially disassociating, he's eeriely calm.
(continued) Like Phoenix seemed to expect it could happen that he was set up. It would have been possible to prove his innocence. He didn't. Did he fear only more attacks against him would follow?
ooh, now this is a deeply fun ask to get on my day off, thank you very much anon.
I'm gonna assume this is a reference to this post where I did some tag rambling, so I'll continue some thoughts from there.
100% agree in regards to motivation. Trilogy Phoenix is fascinating to me, I know Takumi said that Phoenix tends to be something of a self-insert for the player, as the "detective" in a mystery plot he's there to solve, not act. But when you take away that doylist perspective, and go inside the text to look at him as a character, things get interesting.
The way I always saw it, the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney games aren't really about Phoenix Wright. AA1 dedicates its largest and most significant character arc to Edgeworth, AA2 mostly has Phoenix being pushed through cases by others (all the games do this but it's really noticable in AA2) and AA3 finishes the Fey family's 3-game arc, which is more about Mia and Maya. Phoenix has very little backstory, and very few personal goals, but that's complemented by the fact that Phoenix's characterisation explains why. His motivations, his sense of self, identity, etc. all seem to exist as projections from other people. He's Edgeworth & Larry's friend because they saved him, he becomes a defence attorney because of Edgeworth's childhood beliefs, and the turnabout terror because he's emulating Mia (this is so obvious that Godot points it out). He dates Dahlia because she tells him he's her boyfriend now, his friendship with Maya begins because Mia told her to take care of him, he's Trucy's father because she casts him in the role... this is a repeated pattern for pre 7yg Phoenix. Even in terms of one of his strongest trilogy motivations - saving Edgeworth - he's still to some extent repeating the pattern that Edgeworth unknowingly set at 9 years old.
And when there aren't people around... well that's when the inverse kicks in. When Maya isn't around, Phoenix won't take cases for months (this... has always sounded like depression to me, and I think there's a really good argument for Phoenix having some form of depression. It's how I tend to write him.) He talks about Trucy "being his light", and implies that without her, he would have given up post-disbarment. Phoenix has a VERY obvious savior complex, and it's repeatedly taken advantage of; he defines his worth by how good he is at rescuing others. Examples of this off the top of my head include apologising to Lana for not fully aquiting her when she very much did commit a crime, how upset he is during AA2 because he tried to save Edgeworth and couldn't (even though it's clear that Edgeworth needed to save himself), and wanting to defend Iris even though for all he knows, she's his evil ex (at the point he decides to defend her, he has 0 evidence this isn't the same woman who tried to kill him.) But when it comes to himself? Well, he can get injured or threatened (and he does! a lot!) but Phoenix will NEVER defend himself in the same way he does other people (there's a whole tangent I could go into about how he's a very non-violent character and the few instances in the series where he's physically violent are extremly indicative of this protective streak. But I digress).
So we come to the Zak Gramarye case - Why doesn't Phoenix react? Well, he does. But to defend Zak, not himself. I think this case would have been different if any assistant had been there, whether Maya, Ema, or Pearl, because they wouldn't have accepted it, would have taken it as a challenge to themselves, and by extention motivated Phoenix. But with Phoenix alone... he's only fighting for his client. And when his client disappears... well then, he'll take it passively (If Zak had stayed, would Phoenix have pulled a turnabout? Possibly, there may have been some way to fix the situation if he'd been motivated to do so. He's arguably fought worse.)
This is why the 7yg is deeply, deeeeeeply interesting to me as someone who loves to fill in character development, because the character development that happens in the 7yg changes basically all of this. By the time we see Phoenix again in 4-1, he has gained a decidedly selfish streak, he's out for... something, whether justice, vengeance or just stopping Kristoph from hurting people, Phoenix is finally has his own goals, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. (Thus comes the reversal, Phoenix is to Apollo in AA4 what other people were to Phoenix in the trilogy, though I'd argue that Apollo has a far better developed sense of self)
Would love to hear other peoples opinions on this one though (anon you are very welcome to come back and talk more, would love to hear ur opinions on Phoenix expecting to be set-up)

Snow doesn’t fall in scottsdale - a. matthews
Tumblr media
AN: Uhh just ignore the text in the gif since it’s obviously not relevant to the story. (even though Ema is the best) But here’s what might be the last Christmas fic in my eight weeks of Christmas series. I’ve been finding myself inspired for other stuff, and there’s so much wonderful Christmas content out there that I’m sure you don’t need 47837584 more from me. So enjoy this one, a nice anon requested more Auston content, so that’s why I wrote it. But, I really liked it and hope you do too.
This is also for @broadstbroskis who I love to send things at absolutely inappropriate times for her so, I hope this hits you at a bad time ;)
Word Count: 4628
Warnings: None, it’s floofy.
Auston felt himself sigh as he looked at you. You were sitting out on the roof and holding an old mug of tea. He noticed the way you held the mug close to your chest and looked out at the skyline. The sun was just beginning to set, the deep orange and purple hues and the hot dry air  were some of his favorite things about where he was from and lived during the offseason. But as he carefully looked at the somber expression coming from his limited view of your face, he could tell that you missed Toronto.
You were the type of person who had a firm belief that Christmas wasn’t really Christmas without the snow, and Scottsdale, Arizona might have felt cold at 20 degrees celsius to those that lived there, but to you all it was, was a dry desert with fake Christmas trees and a painful lack of snow covering the ground. Your favorite memories included carrying a small sled down the street while holding your mom’s hand, or sitting on your dad’s shoulders at the Christmas market every year, snow piling onto your beanie as you stuck your tongue out hoping to catch flakes. Those were your favorite memories of the holiday and even if the view was stunning, the palm trees simply didn’t hold a match to the thick, evergreens covered in snow. But you were thankful to have Auston, and his family, who had been nothing but accommodating to you. So you kept your homesickness away from them, plastering on a smile that faded as soon as you came out to the roof to take a moment to yourself.
You didn’t want to complain, because you were genuinely grateful that Auston had invited you to spend the holiday with him. Before you could contemplate the weight of the question, or think about how spending Christmas with your friend who always felt like something more would only entangle your heart further into the mess of feelings that it was already nestled in, you said yes. The decision didn’t phase you until you were waiting for a flight, your thigh brushing his and his head resting on your shoulder, that maybe this was only going to end up hurting you in the long run because of your own harbored feelings for one of your closest friends.
You’d liked Auston for almost as long as you’ve known him, having met in a chance run in when he bumped into you on a night out with your friends, spilling your drink all down your dress. He offered you a new one, and soon you found yourself tumbling into a dangerous friendship with him that your heart always wanted to pull more out of. It was a bad idea, going home with him. It was something that was debatably far too intimate for two people who were supposed to be just friends. But you didn’t know that Auston harbored feelings of his own, and you didn’t know just how much he’d do to make your Christmas special.
Auston watched carefully as you set the mug down and snapped a picture, one that would later end up on Instagram for the world to see, captioned “there’s no snow but the view is great.” You flipped your phone back over, presumably hiding any potential interruptions from your time up on the roof. He took your pause as his moment to make his presence known, and he carefully opened the tall glass sliding door and stepped out onto the roof. You looked over at him before curling your feet underneath your legs to make space for him to sit.
“Are you okay?” He tentatively asked. You simply nodded and leaned your head on his shoulder, causing him to instinctively pull you closer into his body. It was almost terrifying how well he knew your mannerisms, each breath you took or movement gave away everything about how you were feeling. It scared him how well he could read you, but he paid attention because he cared. Auston knew this was about Christmas, and while didn’t know how to pull any of it off, he'd drive to Colorado and back if it meant bringing you a dusting of snow to the desert in December.
----------
The following afternoon, your mood had improved and the melancholic moment shared between you was nearly forgotten as you sat across from him at the small coffee shop. Auston had this ability to know your every emotion. He knew when you wanted to talk about what was bothering you and when you didn’t, and you appreciated that when you woke up the next day, he offered nothing other than a soft smile and asked if you’d like to check out this new small coffee place with him.
“I can’t believe you managed to get this much time off this season, normally you don’t even go home.” You hummed as you sipped on your drink. Auston held the door open for you as you walked out, the heat hitting your skin almost instantly as the loss of air conditioning from the shop became more apparent.
“I know, but it’s good.” He shrugged, offering no indication that there was any deeper meaning to that statement as he followed you out of the shop. The truth was that the extra time was much needed, as it gave him the perfect opportunity for an impulsive trip out of town that just might lift the mood you were so desperately trying to conceal.
You handed Auston your iced coffee for a moment so that you could toss up your hair. The sun was starting to beat down, heating up your skin and causing a light sweat.
“It’s too hot, how can you even be wearing that?” You gestured to his outfit, which in contrast to some of the clothes he normally wore, was relatively relaxed and normal. He was wearing black joggers and a dark t-shirt, with a light flannel on top. You were sweating just looking at it in comparison to the oversized Nike t-shirt you had stolen from him that morning, and your soft shorts. You couldn’t deny that it looked good on him though, and if it wasn’t so hot and you lived in a reality where you could act on your feelings, you wouldn’t mind tucking yourself right into his chest.
“Ah well, that’s because we’re not staying here.” He shrugged, shaking you out of your daydream and tugging you back toward his car. He laced his fingers in yours and it sent fluttering right to your chest. The simple display of affection was something that you were likely reading entirely too much into. But you didn’t care, because your brain was communicating chemicals of fondness that were being sent straight to your heart with the simple gesture, and you were going to let yourself enjoy it even if it ultimately didn’t actually mean anything substantial.
“What? Where are we going?” You asked. Auston just smiled nervously at you as he unlocked the car. He untangled his fingers from yours and walked to the driver’s side door, a sensation that you subtly frowned at.
“Uh, well I hope you don’t mind but…” His voice was muffled as he got into the driver's seat.
“But what, Auston?” You pressed.
“We may be going on a road trip.” He bit his lip slightly as your eyes went wide. He knew this was spontaneous, and maybe too much. But all he wanted was to see a smile on your face and if he had to spend all night looking up weather reports and finding a town that had a substantial amount of snow and drive you there, that was a task he was more than willing to do.
“To where? And why?” You laughed. Auston smirked at you as he started the car.
“This small town in the mountains in Colorado. We have a cabin, we’re bringing Felix, and there’s a ton of snow right now.” He smiled at you, watching out of the corner of his eye to see your reaction as you took in what he was saying. Your eyes widened and your heart rate quickened. You reached over the center console and grabbed his hand and slid your fingers through his once more.
“Thank you.” You whispered, hoping that the simple words could accurately depict just how appreciative you were of him. He pulled your hand up to his mouth, pressing a light kiss to the back of it and smiling at you once again. The adoration in his eyes was more than what a friend should show, but this entire trip was more than friendly, and you didn’t really care that you were setting your heart up for the inevitable disappointment you might face by the end of it, because you at least somewhat had Auston. He may have not been your boyfriend, you couldn’t kiss him whenever you wanted, or hold him beyond small gestures but he cared about you, probably more than he cared about most of his friends, and that was enough. So you packed a bag, loaded Felix into the car, and drove just over eight hours with him to spend a few days in the snow before Christmas.
----------
The first night you got there, the two of you were exhausted. You were so tired that you couldn’t even register the lines you were crossing as you climbed into bed next to him, Felix tucked securely under your feet. You were so tired that you didn’t question it when his arm came around your waist and slid just underneath the waist of the sweatshirt you were wearing. He was warm, and you felt safe, so you let yourself drift off to sleep without thinking of the emotional consequences of the romanticization of all of this.
The second night, Auston had insisted on another surprise for you. One that he was tight lipped about, but swore that you would love. All he told you was that you needed to dress warm and be ready to walk around. So, you threw on more layers than was probably necessary and let him lead you into town.
You grabbed onto his arm to not lose him. The crowd was larger than you’d expect for the small mountain town he had brought you to. Auston just pulled you in closer, wrapping an arm around you to tuck you safe and secure into his side. It was another simple gesture, adding to the annoying list in the back of your mind of things that Auston Matthews could do that caused a flutter in your stomach and slight heartache in your chest. But it was cold, and the gesture was one that made you feel calm and content as he led you further into the town.
The small town was quant, and reminded you of some picturesque stereotypical German town that went all out for the holidays. The Bavarian style cottages and buildings were all decorated with lights, and the snow on the roofs was a sight that made you smile even more as you kept walking. You were about to ask Auston where you were headed when suddenly the lights came into view. Your eyes went wide as you looked at the giant tree in the center of the town square, it was lit up with white lights and shiny, multicolored ornaments. Snow was settled into the branches and littered on the ground. You nearly cried when you realized where he had brought you.
“I can’t make it snow in Arizona, I can’t replicate the tree, but I found this place and thought it was pretty close.” He looked down as you with a subtle smile on his lips. You reached a hand up to his cheek, running your thumb along the stubble from where his beard was growing in, feeling his cheeks shift into a larger smile. He wrapped an arm further around your waist and pulled you into his chest. Auston looked at you like you were his entire world and his heart lurched in his chest at yet another grip you were securing on it. He wanted to lean down and kiss you. He wanted to walk through the door to your soul that he had been waiting behind for so long because for the first time, standing there with your hand on his cheek and you looking at him the way that you were, it felt like it was finally opening for him.
But the moment was fleeting and as your eyes scattered away from his and you stepped back, his heart dropped. Because in that moment he could almost see the intricate parts of your mind racing, probably regretting getting so close to him in the first place. He didn’t get to kiss you that night, but as you threw on his sweatshirt and crawled into bed next to him, letting your head fall onto his chest, he let himself wander back to the idea of your feelings being reciprocated. It was that feeling that left him softly smiling as he fell asleep.
----------
“I have one last surprise for this trip.” Auston came out into the kitchen. He stood behind you and reached an arm around to grab a mug, resting his other hand on your waist as he did so. You were growing almost too accustomed to the subtle touches shared on this trip, to falling asleep in his arms. You were in your own almost blissful world, and there was a part of you that had been thinking about taking the leap and kissing him. Because in this blissful world, reality didn’t exist. You weren’t going back to Arizona tomorrow, and you weren’t ultimately going back to Toronto to your separate apartments. In this reality, you could stay with Auston forever, without the pressures of everything that real life brought both of you.
“Do enlighten me on the latest Auston Matthews surprise experience, because I must say that I am enjoying it.” You teased, passing him the coffee pot that was in front of you. You spun around to face him and his smile grew. There was a soft glow to his smile and his eyes that had your heart racing even faster than it already was previously, and you bit your lip as you waited for a response.
“We’re going skating.” He grinned, a satisfactory laugh coming from him as he watched your eyes go wide and mouth hang open just slightly. You had only skated once in your life, and it was when you were seven. Your older brother had shoved you onto the ice and you tumbled, breaking your arm in the process. Ever since then, skating was the one fear you had, which was slightly ironic considering the person you were essentially in love with did it for a living.
“Auston… you know I don’t know how to skate.” You glanced over at him, his hand reassuringly came to rest on your hip, a soft squeeze that sent shivers running through your body at the contact. He pressed a soft kiss to your forehead and you nearly fell over. The line that the two of you were balancing on felt like it had been crossed with the intimacy of the kiss. It was a simple, quick, but tender kiss to the forehead, and it was rushing into your heart, causing it to react and demand more from him.
“Time to learn, babe.” He patted your hip and walked out of the kitchen. The disconnect from his body no longer pressed almost against yours was almost excruciating. You stood there in the kitchen for what felt like hours just replaying the moment in your mind. You were so focussed on how badly you wanted him that you didn’t even register the fear that you normally felt when it came to the idea of skating.
Later that afternoon, after resolving yourself to the fact that you were definitely not getting out of this surprise, and realizing that he even bought new skates for you, Auston led you through a snow-covered pathway on your way to the frozen lake. The walk was quiet, the only sounds coming from your feet crunching in the snow. As you got closer and the lake came into view, you were regretting leaving Felix at the cabin because he could have been a great excuse to use to get out of this.
Auston spotted a small bench and instructed you to sit down on it. He sat down beside you and lifted a leg into your lap, sliding the skate on and beginning to tie it securely for you. You watched as his hands moved, tightening the laces. When he was done with both skates, his hand slid up your shin, a soft reassuring smile on his face as he tapped your leg indicating that you needed to move so he could put on his own skates. You were starting to get more and more nervous as he finished lacing his up and grabbed your hands, helping you stand on the edge of the lake. Auston took a few steps backwards, guiding you to the very edge of the frozen lake. Your stomach dropped when he stepped out, the sound of skates hitting the ice shocking you back into the reality of what you were doing.
“No railing baby, you’ve got to hold onto me or accept that you might fall.” Auston teased as you stood at the edge of the lake. This felt like a disaster waiting to happen, a tragic ending to what would have been the cute cheesy skating scene in one of those terrible lifetime Christmas movies. You felt slightly ridiculous out there, but Auston didn’t see it that way. He saw this as another opportunity to help you have the best possible Christmas even if you were away from your family.
“You know.. what if I just sit here and watch you?” You offered, biting your lip as he skated to the edge of the lake. He positioned himself right in front of you and took your gloves hands in his, guiding you slowly onto the ice.
“I’ve got you, I won’t let you fall, okay?” He reassured you. If only he knew that falling on the ice was the least of your concerns when it came to the meaning of that word. Auston reached for your hand, silently lacing his fingers with yours as he guided you into taking your first step. You crashed into him, hands flailing into his chest as he laughed softly at you.
“It’s not funny!” You whined, grasping onto him as tightly as you could. Auston didn’t mind the contact, he wanted to be with you all the time, his heart carefully locked in your possession to keep, whether you knew it or not. If anyone told him that he’d have gone through all of this for a person who he wasn’t even dating, he would have laughed in their face. But you were different, and no matter how hard he tried to pretend you were just a friend, he knew he was potentially setting himself up for a shattered soul if you didn’t feel the same way that he did.
You let Auston guide you around the ice, his hands secure on your body to prevent you from falling. When he guided you off the ice, you sat straight down onto the same bench you had previously. Auston leaned in front of you, grabbing the back of the bench with his hands on either side of you. For a moment you let your mind drift, thinking about what it would be like to reach out and grab the strings tauntingly hanging from his sweatshirt and pulling him into you from where he was standing. You thought about how you could press your lips softly to his, reaching your hand through his hair to pull him closer into you. You felt your stomach in knots as you thought about kissing him, something you’d been wanting to do for a while, but never had the courage to, and it wasn’t until he waved a hand in front of your face that you realized you weren’t kissing him, it was just an image projected from your imagination as you sat there, wishing your feelings away so that you wouldn’t constantly be rejected in your own head.
----------
The two of you set off on the drive back to Scottsdale the next day, leaving behind the bliss of being unplugged and away from everyone for just a few days. The whole experience almost felt like a melatonin induced dream, the last three days spent with him. But as you settled back into the guest room in his Arizona house on Christmas Eve, your bed felt cold and empty without him.
Christmas day had come and was nearly over, and you smiled more than you thought that you would. It was weird how the short trip had changed your perspective over the whole holiday. You weren’t nearly as homesick as you had been. You were genuinely enjoying yourself, and felt like you belonged right where you were as you helped Ema in the kitchen with Christmas dinner. You felt a sense of ease finally about Auston, clarity slowly drifting from your heart to your brain about how you felt about him.
You had excused yourself after dinner to go up to the roof once more, just taking some time to let all of your feelings settle. The reality of going back to Toronto was starting to creep back in. Soon you would be home and back in the routine of the second half of the hockey season. Auston would go back to being gone all of the time, and you would go back to work, the fleeting feelings you were experiencing would pass, and you’d get back to the place that you had been before where you were content with him just being your friend.
Auston however, had different hopes for the last few hours of this short escape from Toronto. He loved his job, he loved his teammates and the city, but he’d be lying to everyone and himself if he didn’t admit that you were one of his favorite parts of the whole thing. He lit up whenever he’d see you in the crowd, the same old Maple Leafs beanie you had since your high school days adorned on your head. You fit seamlessly into his life in every single way except for the most important one, and he had enough of it. This week spent with you had shown him that he needed to be honest. He needed to release his heart from the weight of his own growing feelings for you, and there were moments where he truly thought that you were going to catch it. He needed to take the chance, he might explode if he didn’t.
The gift was entirely too much, it was too sentimental, too heartfelt, too every other adjective in the dictionary for the word much, and Auston knew that. He knew that this gift sealed any chance at keeping his feelings opaque, the transparency of the glass felt like a metaphor for a window into his own heart. But he didn’t care. He didn’t care that it was too much, all he wanted was for the horribly wrapped confession to somehow be enough for you. Auston took a deep breath as he held the box, the one that Bre had helped him wrap just the night previously. You were up on the roof, sitting peacefully as you watched the sunset over the skyline. The palm trees and dry terrain are vastly different than what you were used to in December. It was almost like you had a sixth sense he was behind you because he swore he felt his heart drop into his stomach when you turned your head just enough, showing a warm and soft smile as he tentatively stepped toward you.
You were in one of his sweatshirts and your hair was up, a look that in all your years of knowing each other he never got tired of. You were everything to him, and he had been so sure about how he felt about you right from the beginning. But, you weren’t ready. At the time you had just had a bad breakup, your heart was tucked in a locked box in your chest, no hope of it being unlocked by anyone else for a long time. But, a long time had been coming, and now that you were here, in Arizona, in his sweatshirt, smiling at him, he could only hope that you would at least consider giving your heart to him.
Auston stepped out onto the roof again, a familiar feeling settling into his chest from just a few days prior. You lifted your eyes up to meet his, this time a genuine smile adorning your lips as the moon and small patio light lit up your face. He sat down next to you once again, handing you the small, wrapped gift that he had been holding.
“I have one last surprise for you.” He quietly spoke.
You took the box in your hands and you slowly unwrapped the gift.  You set the paper down under your thigh and pulled out the small snow globe, letting it feel heavy in your hands. Your fingers traced over the details, the fetched mountains in the glass and the hint of green pointing through the white snow. It was a simple gift, something plucked straight out of a bad holiday movie, but you didn’t care because it came from him, and the thought behind it was better than any tangible gift he could have bought for you.
“Turns out, snow is very hard to come by around here.” He smiled down at you. You looked at Auston with a new perspective filling your mind, you noticed all of the things about him that you were blissfully ignoring before for the sake of guarding your own heart and hiding your own feelings. You knew his eyes softened when he looked at you, you just chose not to see it until now.
“Auston-“ you started, but his eyes shifted as he spoke. His entire speech was tossed off the side of the roof, he was going with his gut here. He was going to tell you how he felt, because he simply couldn’t hold it in any longer.
“This is probably the worst time for this. And you deserve better than some shitty rooftop confession on Christmas. But, I like you. I like you so much, I have probably since shortly after we met, and I know I didn’t make snow fall like I promised, but that doesn’t change how I feel about you. How badly I want to kiss you, how badly I want to just say that I love you all the time.”
“Auston, you talk too much.” You smiled at him. Everything felt warm, and it wasn’t just because of the slight heat in the air, or his body closely hovering above yours. You were warm because you loved him, a concept that you weren’t expecting yet somehow ended up prepared for.
“Well, I’ll shut up and kiss you, then.” He teased, smiling into a soft kiss. Your hand tangled in his hair, and your eyes fluttered closed as you melted into him.
“Oh, and I love you too.” You smiled as you leaned in to kiss him once more. Sure it wasn’t Toronto. It wasn’t that blissful three days in the mountains. There weren’t lights or trees or snow or anything that you’d traditionally associate with December 25th, but you had Auston in exactly the way that you had wanted him for a long time, and somehow that was better than all of it combined.

It was all so crazy to comprehend still, but you and Auston were officially spending your first night at home as parents.
You were discharged from the hospital around 14 hours after Mia was born. As you were in labour, other than the apparent fact of getting to meet your daughter and being excited for that, you wanted nothing more than to be back at your condo where you felt the most comfortable. You expressed that to Auston and your midwife many times throughout the night, and your midwife assured you that as long as your delivery and recovery afterwards went smoothly, you shouldn't have to spend a full 24 hours in the hospital. Luckily enough, things did go well, so you and Mia were both deemed healthy enough to go home.
However, once you got home, your anxiety peaked.
Although you had been told multiple times by your midwife and doctor, despite Mia being born a week and a half early, she was still very healthy. If she weren't, you and she wouldn't have been able to leave the hospital, which you had to keep reminding yourself. But everything was so new, and there was a lot of adjusting to do, you would've been lying if you said you weren't a little overwhelmed.
Yet, you never admitted how you were feeling. Auston could just tell.
You put on such a brave front, trying to act like you weren't as nervous about your first night home with Mia as you obviously were, but you were so bad at hiding those nerves. That was to be expected, though. You were in postpartum and had given birth that day. No one expected you to be calm immediately or used to everything that being a new parent entailed. But, there was no reason for you to be so unnecessarily hard on yourself.
Something you were struggling with, though, was the fact that Mia wasn't breastfeeding. While in the hospital, you tried to feed her, but she would only take a bottle, and although that was a hard pill for you to swallow, you again had to keep reminding yourself how that was ok, and as long as Mia wasn't hungry, that was best.
All in all, Mia being born was a gratifying experience, but also so, so exhausting. You and Auston were more than ready to have a night back at the condo to unwind a bit with your baby girl and ideally catch up a bit on sleep, but that didn't happen. Well, not at first, at least.
Once the two of you brought Mia home, you gradually introduced her to Frank. Neither you nor Auston knew what to expect when introducing your daughter to your year-old Goldendoodle, but it went so much smoother than you anticipated. Frank took to having a new little human around very well, and it was almost as if he sensed something different with you too because once you were home that evening, he did not leave your side and was extra affectionate with you.
Auston's family then came over for dinner, to which Ema refused to let you and Auston take any part in preparing or cleaning up after. She wanted the two of you to be as relaxed as possible and stay focused on your daughter because she also knew the upcoming days would be pretty hectic with everyone wanting to meet the newest little Matthews.
Your brother, Nate, got into Toronto that evening from Montreal after receiving Mitch's call telling him that his niece had been born around 4am. He joined for dinner with Auston's family so he could meet Mia but then went to stay with Mitch and Steph so your little family could have your space for your first night home. You knew he'd be back the next day because your dad and sister, Mya, would be in from B.C then with plans to stay in the city for a few days as well so they too could meet their newest family member. Speaking of family, you knew your cousin Chris and the rest of Mitch's family would want to stop by at some point too. You also were aware that undoubtedly, guys from the team would be over as well.
It was a big deal to many people that Mia finally arrived, but it was crucial that you, Auston and her, were all feeling up for how many visitors you'd be having in the upcoming days. This was why Ema prepared a couple of meals for you and your fiancè, without telling either of you and left them in the fridge before she, Brian, Alex and Bre all left for the night.
Before Auston's family left, though, Ema made you and Auston promise that you'd call her if either of you needed anything. Whether that be picking something up or for someone to watch Mia while the two of you rested, she would be there as quickly as she could. But for that first night, you and Auston insisted you both wanted to try out caring for Mia on your own but agreed to call her if things got to be too much.
After everyone left, the night did go pretty smoothly, and you were so thankful for that.
Auston gave Mia a bottle around 7pm, then you both cuddled up on the couch with Frank as Auston continued holding her, and soon enough, Mia was passed right out. Much to Auston's dismay, because he just didn't want to stop holding his little girl, he still let you take Mia from his hold and put her in her bassinet as she slept. You both knew she'd wake up in three hours or so wanting another bottle, so you didn't go to sleep right away and opted to watch a movie together instead while you waited for her to wake back up.
Less than an hour into the movie, you were fighting hard to stay awake. You were so exhausted, having not slept well at the hospital at all, and Auston didn't understand why you wouldn't let yourself rest. He knew it was because you were nervous, hell, he was too, but you were in recovery and needed to be mindful of that. It was like pulling teeth, but Auston eventually convinced you to sleep in your bedroom instead of out on the couch. He insisted that he'd be fine to stay up and give Mia another bottle before joining you in bed and calling it a night as well. You had no reason to doubt his fatherly abilities, so without any further argument, you and Frank crawled into yours and Auston's king-sized bed, and you fell asleep almost as soon as your head hit your pillow.
Around 10pm, Mia stirred awake, looking for another bottle and in need of a diaper change, but Auston took it all on like a champ and handled it all with ease. Sure, he was a little nervous, but it ended up being way less stressful than he was expecting, and about an hour later, Mia was falling asleep in his arms again. So, without a second thought, he turned off all the lights in the condo, then quietly brought her into the bedroom.  He was careful not to wake you as he set Mia in the bassinet that was in the bedroom before climbing into bed next to you, pulling you close, then falling asleep soon after.
Auston wasn't sure how long he'd been sleeping for, but with how it was still dark out, he knew it wasn't for long. He didn't hear Mia fussing, which he took as a good sign and figured he could roll over and fall back asleep for a little while longer. But, when he reached out to pull you close again, only to find the space next to him empty, well, then he was wide awake.
He sat right up, wondering where the hell you could've gone, but couldn't come up with any ideas. There was no light coming from the ensuite or out hallway, indicating that you hadn't gotten out of bed to go to the washroom or grab a late-night snack or bottle for Mia from the kitchen, which left him even more puzzled. He then noticed how Frank wasn't there either and knew you couldn't have gone very far.
Shaking his head, Auston then grabbed his phone to see that it was 3:30am and that he'd only slept for maybe four hours. However, he didn't hear Mia fuss at all even though he knew she probably would've woken up for another bottle during that time and had even set an alarm just in case, but then he realized the alarm was turned off and knew that you had to have been the one to do that.
Still feeling a little confused, he got out of bed and used the light coming from his phone screen so he could see as he walked through the room, but stopped when his eyes fell on something, and his search for you soon came to an end.
On the other side of the room, over near the closet, you were fast asleep on the ground next to Mia's bassinet, laying on the fluffy white rug that was there with Frank curled right up next to you as he slept as well. Mia was sleeping too. However, with the almost empty bottle resting on the ground beside you, Auston knew you must've already fed her. But what didn't make sense was why you hadn't taken the few steps needed to crawl back into bed instead of sleeping on the floor next to your daughter.
Chuckling slightly at the image in front of him, Auston shook his head because he knew part of why you weren't in bed was because of your stubbornness, even though he was well aware you'd never admit it.
Without much thought, Auston then wandered over to where you slept and checked on Mia before leaning down to pick you up in bridal style and carrying you back to bed. He tried not to wake you, but with the way Frank groaned at the sudden disturbance to his slumber and you being shaken awake slightly, you then slowly blinked your eyes open and looked up at your fiancé as he carried you.
"Aus?" You asked quietly, instinctively snuggling closer to his chest before he gently set you back on the bed. "W-what happened? Is Mia, alright?"
"Yes, Mia's fine," Auston assured before getting back into bed next to you and letting you cuddle up against him again as Frank hopped on the bed to join the two of you also. "You were sleeping on the floor, babe."
"Oh," you whispered, a pout forming on your lips as you did so.
"How come you didn't just come back to bed?"
You were about to respond but stopped as you thought about the proper answer to his question, then sighed before telling him.
"I was afraid to fall back asleep, but I guess I was too tired actually to stick with that."
"Babe," he replied, a slightly disappointed tone in his voice as he did. "You need to rest. I know you're anxious, I am too, but how are you going to be able to take care of Mia if you don't take care of yourself?"
Auston didn't say that harshly or anything, but it still struck something in you because you knew how right he was. So, after taking a deep breath, you spoke up again.
"I know, I'm sorry," you told him, then sat up slightly so you could glance over at Mia, making sure she was still asleep in her bed, which you were able to tell thanks to the lights of downtown Toronto that still managed to somewhat illuminate through the closed blinds in your bedroom. "She's just so little and new, Auston. What if something happens to her while we sleep? I would never forgive myself just because I was too tired to be there for her."
At that, Auston sighed and just about melted as he observed you watching Mia, already being overcome by the fact that he knew you were bound to be such a good mother. Without saying anything, he then sat up too and leaned against the headboard before gently pulling you onto his lap, not stopping until your back was against his chest. Once he stopped moving, you then shifted so you'd be more comfortable. After that, you leaned back against him and mindlessly rubbed your hand up and down his arm while he kept them wrapped around your middle. He responded by resting his head on your shoulder, then the two of you remained there in comfortable silence for a little bit as you observed your daughter together.
"Look at her," Auston spoke softly after a few moments. "She's fine."
"I know, but-."
"But if something happens, then we can face it together. We're both new to this whole parenting thing, Y/N. We are for sure going to make mistakes, but how else are we going to learn? It's ok to be worried about our new baby, but there is no need to be right now. Right now, it would be best if you rested because you gave birth literally 24 hours ago. Please stop stressing yourself out, babe. For me, for Mia and yourself. It's not healthy."
Once Auston finished his spiel, you slowly moved away so that you could look over your shoulder at him and respond. But instead of saying anything, you nodded once his gaze met yours, then leaned forward to catch his lips in a soft, sweet kiss.
"Thank you," you mumbled against his mouth, then moved away to look at him again. "For holding me accountable and being the best partner in all of this. You're right, and I guess I needed to be reminded that I am still recovering and how I'm not alone. So, thank you."
"You don't need to thank me," he smiled. "There's nowhere else I'd rather be than here with you taking care of our daughter."
"Our daughter," you repeated, smiling as you shifted, then leaned back against him again. "I still can't believe she's here. We really made her, huh?"
Auston nodded, a grin stretching across his mouth as he followed your gaze over to where Mia was sleeping still.
"I also can't believe it, but yeah. She's here, and she's so perfect. I never knew I was capable of falling in love with something so hard and so fast until you gave me her."
"I could say the same to you, Aus. We did this together, and I think we did a damn good job."
Your heart never felt as full as it did at that moment, and you loved it so much. Everything about your life seemed perfect, and it just made you so ridiculously happy. After that talk with Auston, you both were able to fall back asleep for a couple of hours before Mia woke up again. And even with your exhaustion and anxiousness that was still very present, you had never felt more content.

Just wanted to know ur thoughts on snk chapter 138. Like I heard people complaining about how it’s going to end like Got, and Mikasa kissing Eren was kind of disturbing. Which I don’t blame them, just want someone else’s opinion on this chapter. And was that alternate universe just made up in mikasa’s head or is it something more?? I shouldn’t be assuming since the raw chapter just came out but I don’t know how to feel about it?
I know we don’t have the full details yet but what do you make out of the AU where Eren and Mikasa run away together? I found it interesting and even bittersweet but the suggestion that they would have just left Armin behind feels so weird to me. Makes it look like they never cared for him at all which is not what has been shown in the manga. It also seems to suggest that because Mikasa didn’t confess to Eren then he decided to destroy the world? Ugh I’m trying not to freak out cause I don’t want to believe this is what it means. ;__;
Sigh. Answering together.
I guess I do blame people who think it’s disturbing lol. Well, not in principle--we can’t help what disturbs us!--but I haven’t seen a take like that that is made in good faith. All I’ve seen is EH fans angry that their ship is not canon and projecting that this is disturbing as if Eren destroying the world for love isn’t when like... EMA is the crux of the manga. It always has been. SnK began with Eremika (it’s the first scene in the entire story) and it’s ending with Eremika (parallel and possibly the same scene).
It is bitter and sweet, cruel and beautiful, a paradox in that it ends their relationship but also cements it, a reconciliation as much as it is a destruction. Just because you love someone doesn’t mean you can always save them: as Mikasa showed us when Armin almost died, when you love someone, sometimes you have to let them go when the stakes are so high (I plan to make a post though about how SnK has a pattern of “if you lose it you will find it;” if you give something up you almost always get it back). But what has value itself is the love--it’s beautiful just because it’s love, and love enables you to live beyond the grave (”Eren, if I die... I won’t even be able to remember you”).
To answer the second question, it’s not so much they left Armin behind so much as it is that their love is romantic and that does require a different level of commitment than platonic, though it is no less special or powerful; I also think Armin’s character is such that he would not have left.
And no, I don’t think that’s what the scene means in terms of Mikasa’s answer. The onus is and has always been on Eren, not on Mikasa. The partial translations we have seem to indicate that Paradis would then have been destroyed; there was no good choice. However, Eren’s always one or the other, black and white, a childish perspective and an extremist.
They could have stayed and fought together.
That was an option too, but it isn’t one of the ones Eren saw, so he was afraid to try that path. Only doing things when you’re certain of them is fear-based and childlike, and in this case, tragic. One of the messages of SnK is to venture into the unknown--the world beyond the walls, but instead of viewing it as one of discovery like Armin and like Eren could have, he was terrified and chose this option.
