this whole idea in both the fandom and the games themselves that being a people attached to their past & a lost civilization is a failing whereas a celebration of the present is something to strive for wrt elven & dwarven culture is something that reads as fundamentally western & liberal to me.
#‘progress’ as inherently good and the past as inherently ‘backward’ and the idea that if ur looking back u can’t see forwards#<- the idea that these statements are Real and True facts of existence is deeply embedded in the western consciousness#these are legacies of the enlightment that have left their mark in allllllllll of our discourse#they are not necessarily true though. and i do think it’s good to be aware of what’s going on there!#i don’t think people quite realize the implications of what they’re doing when they project these ‘truths’ onto cultures#based on Real Groups (indigenous & jewish) whose persecution has ALSO been fueled by these ideas#there is an idea of a ‘good jew’ or a ‘good native’ that accepts the status quo and relinquishes ties to their peoples’ cultural pasts#and it’s a little troubling how much the fandom at large recreates this rhetoric even if this is a fictional context!#bioware critical#veilguard critical#<- implicitly ig

the idea that each nuclear family should have its own house, own appliances, own everything and that adult children should move out at 18 is a relatively recent post-WWII, suburbanization-era invention
and it just so happens to be highly profitable
#segmentation of the customer even#this is why charming acres and 1950s features the way it does#1950s popularized the image of the self-contained upwardly mobile nuclear family#the game is rigged#extended family living was increasingly framed as backward immigrant or rural#suburban nuclear family became a national identity project and it survives in marketing materials and specific targeted consumerism#consumerism Cold War ideology and gender roles (housewife breadwinner etc.)#bc from a business perspective splitting extended families into individual homes was a gold mine#not owning a home not having a perfect family unit needing help from relatives staying with your parents past 18#or relying on community all became loaded with stigma#the use of words like codependent and socially incestuous applied liberally furthered the agenda#pop psychology gets over applied#they’re often over-applied in contexts where people are simply staying close surviving together or choosing mutual care#what gets labeled as pathology is not weird at all and historically common and culturally valid… it’s just not as profitable#making them question bonds that may be loving supportive and necessary#thinking about this a lot being more embedded in an extended network again#anyway spn does this well!#abusing the lower class then calling them Weird for huddling together when upper classes are in fact the ones who are flagrantly nepotism#when in fact upper class is Weirder and 9-10 times the one salivating over the Idea is upper class#i feel like if you miss this you miss Everything#surburbia is weird and isolating on purpose

So excited to have my hands of the first proper prototype of my NuaCam project. It's crazy to see just how far I have come in a few short months, growing this from a simple idea to a functional device. The goal is to build a camera which utilising ai stylisation to capture reality in a new light. Now I can focus on improving the ai side to try and create exciting styles to use. The first prototype was causing lots of lost hours debugging due to lose wires, so I bite the bullet and designed this pcb to help me develop the software side.

i've gotta program something soon...
#my posts#gets computer science degree#proceeds to do no programming for 4 months#i have like a few programming ideas but starting things is hard#i want to play with godot more it seems fun#i should probably also learn C++ for job reasons since i want to get into lower level/embedded stuff and only know C and rust#i guess the problem there is i'd have to like come up with a project to learn it with#preferably something lower level#maybe finally do that make your own file system project i skipped?#or like something with compression and parsing file formats#that's all pretty involved though so something like playing with godot would probably be better to get myself back in the programming mood#some sort of silly 2d game probably#i've had thoughts of making a silly little yume nikki-like for my friends to play that could be fun#or just any silly little game for just my friends idk#starting with gamemaker kinda made using other game engines a bit weird for me#so getting used to how more normal game engines work would probably be useful#i also want to mess with 3d games that seems fun too#but see the problem with all of this is that i suck at starting projects#and am even worse at actually finishing them#well i guess we'll see what happens?#also hi if you read all of this lol

like I don't think the people writing these realize what a huge fucking deal wwx defecting was. the sects are your financial, social, political, emotional, and martial support. they're like...family. just as lwj and wwx owe loyalty to their sects, they are (theoretically) granted security, housing, comfort, money, social/political sway, friends, a support system, education, access to resources a lone cultivator wouldn't have...I read a meta once ages ago about how wwx literally only survived his time on the streets and became a cultivator BECAUSE of the remnants of those social bonds that tied him to jfm through his parents
#also lwj in particular is deeply embedded in sect academic/cultivation life and loves his home and the kids#I may be projecting but despite how alone he is I think that's much more bearable because he lives on compound with a bunch of people#he has a home and a community full of people who know him and respect him. and his family of course#so interpersonally it's more okay he doesn't have many close friends#and he doesn't really want them anyway#ficblogging
