“If we can catch our pain before it gets too bad, we have the power to change them , instead of letting them get worse. Catch it, check it, change it!” From my latest blog post-link in bio. This is one of the core teachings of certified peer specialists. It’s a very simple tool, but it works well. In DBT language, we would call this “checking the facts.” When I woke up this morning, at first I felt guilty that I was in a good mood, but then I checked that downer. Goodness can be hard to find right now and so I shouldn’t spoil itWith guilt when I have it. I can experience good feelings while still being considerate of others. I can have a good mood, Knowing that it will not last forever, so I better enjoy it now. I can have concern for others and yet still feel joy in my being. We can become triggered without even realizing it... . . One skill taught in DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy - developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan), is the Wise Mind. A Wise Mind is the balance between reasonable mind and emotional mind. It is an intuitive knowing. It combines rational thought and emotion... . . Linehan states, “Wise mind is that part of each person that can know and experience truth. It is where the person knows something to be true or valid. It is almost always quiet, it has a certain peace...” . . Sometimes when we struggle with emotional regulation we can flip flop between the two extremes. Learning to identify each mind state can be helpful when making decisions or interacting with others... . . Here are a few tips to cultivate a Wise Mind::: 💛 Observe your thoughts and feelings... 💛 Acknowledge the emotion AND rational thought before acting... 💛 Acknowledge a situation without interpretation (e.g. “She is speaking loudly” versus “She has a bad attitude.”)... 💛 Practice Mindfulness and breath-work... 💛 Ask yourself, “Is this Wise Mind? What is the bigger picture? #Repost @tammyrink.lpc ・・・ Our autonomic Nervous System (ANS) has two parts: Sympathetic (SNS) flight, fight, or freeze😱 Parasympathetic (PNS) rest and digest🧘‍♂️ . These two parts are constantly working. We want them to be balanced. If the SNS takes over and the PNS slows down we have AnXiETy!!! 😳 , It’s our job to learn how to keep our autonomic Nervous System balanced. People can coach us but we have to do the work. It’s an inside job. 💪 . When the SNS goes up we need to elevate our PNS to regain balance. Here’s how: . . ⭐️Deep breathe - inhale for 4 seconds exhale longer. The longer exhale kicks in PNS. . . ⭐️Relax the muscles in your body. Especially your face, jaw, and shoulders. . . ⭐️ cold water on your face. Or a cold shower. 🥶 . ⭐️Sing or hum. This activates the vagal nerve by your vocal chords. The vagus nerve is part of the PNS. . . ⭐️If something stressful is happening in your environment, set a boundary. Do not take it in to your Nervous System. 😤 . . ⭐️Go to counseling. . . ⭐️learn coping skills to manage stress. Stress can inflame the vagus nerve, throwing the ANS off balance. . ⭐️meditate/yoga .
