“We should get married.”

Matt’s voice was so quiet that Gus thought he must have heard incorrectly. He pulled away from his spot on Matt’s chest, putting down the book he’d been reading and sitting up to look Matt in the eyes. 

“What?” He said.

The corner of Matt’s lips were twisted up into a small smile. “We should get married,” he repeated, more firmly this time, eyes locked on Gus’s.

“Where’s this idea coming from?” Gus asked, but there was a grin on his face. Matt knew he wasn’t upset or offended by the idea. 

Matt reached for one of Gus’s hands to intertwine his fingers. 

“I don’t know. We’ve been living together for years, dating for longer. All our friends are married.” He shrugged. “…it’d be great for the tax benefits?”

Gus busted out laughing at that. Of course. Of course Matt Tholomule’s way of proposing would include fucking tax benefits. 

“Oh, babe, what a romantic,” he giggled, tucking a finger beneath Matt’s chin to pull him up for a kiss. 

“Would you at least wanna think about it?” Matt asked, his brows wrinkled, now wondering if this was all a dumb idea. 

Gus saw the concern in his eyes and pulled Matt closer, so his forehead rested against his. “Yeah, Matty. I’d marry you a thousand times over.” 

Matt’s arms snaked around Gus’s waist, tugging him gently into his lap. No one but Gus knew about this wild, ridiculous, sarcastic, amazing boy’s soft side. He had a gentleness with Gus just as much as they mercilessly teased one another. Gus had been sincere. He would marry Matt. A thousand times over, in any lifetime. In any universe. He was so sure of it, deep in his bones. He and Matt’s very souls were intertwined. 

They held each other in comfortable silence. No need to hash out plans right now. They both knew a traditional wedding wasn’t the right fit for them anyways. Now that the words had been said, they could go sign some paperwork anytime. 

After a while, Gus pulled away just slightly to reach up for the looking glass hanging from his ear. He pulled out the backing and removed it from his earlobe. 

“Gus?” Matt’s eyes were wide and incredulous. 

Gus gave him a soft smile and reached for the small hoop earring in Matt’s right ear. As gently as he could, he removed the earring and replaced it with his looking glass. Then Gus put Matt’s hoop into his ear, where his amplifier token had just been. 

“Gus. I can’t. I know it’s tradition, but this is your special—“

Gus just kept smiling, leaning in to press a kiss to Matt’s cheek. “I know you’ll keep it safe.”

🎀 - I think I have pretty good characterization. It’s something I work hard on to get right and I think that pays off :)
