I sympathize with your disappointment with The Enchanted April (haven't read the book, but felt the same as you do about the 1991 movie when I watched it). I understand this question may be a lot, but... if you had to write a book using the premise of this novel... what would it be like?

I can't answer to specifics because it's been several months since I read it, but it would involve much less thinking and much more things happening. It would involve women who actually become friends instead of being unpleasant for large sections of the book. It would not endlessly repeat the same phrases over and over. It would have humor and heart. It would have an ending that doesn't involve the character's husband coming there to have an affair with her housemate until somehow we're supposed to believe everything's okay between them.

I just feel like in general, it would have a much more joyous and much less worldly worldview. Something a bit more like L.M. Montgomery, with the love of nature and the compassionate worldview that pokes fun at people's foibles while still appreciating them. The book as it stands reads like a disenchanted divorced woman's idea of a happy novel; I'd want something with more genuine goodness at its core.
