“I feel very strongly about putting questions; it partakes too much of the style of the day of judgment. You start a question, and it’s like starting a stone. You sit quietly on the top of a hill; and away the stone goes, starting others; and presently some bland old bird (the last you would have thought of) is knocked on the head in his own back garden and the family have to change their name. No sir, I make it a rule of mine: the more it looks like Queer Street, the less I ask.”
So, I do believe that my copy of this novella had a long discussion at the back about homosexual readings of/hints in the story. This is possibly a good moment in that vein. Not necessarily because of the specific wording of "queer street", but more of what he's implying here.
Spoilers I guess, but Mr. Hyde's check was signed by Dr. Jekyll who is well known and respectable. Questioning how he got the check so easily, in the middle of the night, from an apartment (to which he has a key) in a disreputable neighborhood far from Dr. Jekyll's main residence, is a slippery slope. A logical conclusion to be drawn might be that Jekyll is having an affair with Hyde. If Enfield questioned Hyde too much he might be dragging Jekyll's name into scandal.
Of course, there are other possibilities too - debt, blackmail, etc. - but none of them look good for Jekyll either, and depending on the circumstances may be bad for other people as well. Enfield choosing to just let Hyde pay off the child's family is deliberately looking away from whatever the truth might be in favor of not stirring things up.

One thing that I didn't sadly noticed while reading J&H weekly last year because I was blinded by the Boring Old Man™ delights is how Utterson, from the second this novel starts, is declared an unbeatable paragon of virtue.
No, I'm not joking.
Within all of the beige abjectives, the boring synonyms, and Utterson's own almost self punishing attitude, the narrative tells us that he is a man amongst men, even among his own friends he is the support, and the hand that will always be open to help with reason.
"In this character, it was frequently his fortune to be the last reputable acquaintance and the last good influence in the lives of downgoing men."
Utterson is not the friend that you would want to have, but he is the friend that you will need in the most dire of times. He is a boring beige man that is not denied, the text even implies that cultivating a friendship with him is something akin to growing a tree. Tedious, boring, hard, but it becomes ever lasting once it blooms.
"No doubt the feat was easy to Mr. Utterson; for he was undemonstrative at the best, and even his friendship seemed to be founded in a similar catholicity of good-nature."
Utterson doesn't judge his peers, nor tries to claim a moral upperhand with his being, he is just like that. A boring old lawyer who will move earth to help you if you truly go to him with the energy of correcting your wrongs.
We see this with his conversation with Enfield, he listens to the tale while asking normal questions to keep the story going, then Utterson warns him to not twist nor lie in what he tells because rumors could backfire badly if he does. Moreover, when Enfield does tell Utterson that he is mindful of what he says, Utterson genuinely apologizes to him.
It's really interesting to think how the living antithesis of the conflict that the book presents was given to the readers in the very first paragraph, and I didn't notice.

Do you remember the ironic post I made about gatekeeping in this community? I'd like to elaborate more on it and how people treat those who dare to have a slightly different portrayal than the common consensus the fanbase has; this isn't about anyone by the way, just a very specific, slightly toxic part of the community. The thing about Hyde is that there isn't anything special going on with him design-wise, people get rancid vibes from him and attempt to explain that by accusing him of deformity although there isn't necessarily anything wrong with him appearance-wise; but for whatever reason, whenever someone designs an Hyde that's either too tall or doesn't fit the general view the fanbase has of him which is that of "frail awkward twink" (because I want to remind you all that this man murdered someone by beating them up with a cane despite his small/crouched frame) people get mildly annoyed. This especially seems to apply to the fact that some people make Hyde "taller than what he is supposed to be", and I personally do not think that's necessarily an issue while designing an Edward Hyde.
The reason Hyde is shorter than Jekyll is because he is supposed to represent how the potion makes him regress to when he was younger and free from the societal expectations that society would have on a man of his actual old age, and as a consequence Jekyll also regresses mentally (and this is probably also why Hyde isn't really capable of feeling shame for his actions, but maybe I'll elaborate on this another time).
IMO what truly is important about Hyde is that the writer makes sure that it is clear that this man is a younger version of Jekyll, not design wise, because I personally believe it isn't the design that makes the character, but rather the way it is written. Hyde should be upsetting (on a writer standpoint) because of his actions, be young and alive in the way he behaves. His design is irrelevant and, I think we should prioritize creativity over being forcefully overly accurate for the sake of not being vagueposted about.
Another thing I want to point out is that Jekyll isn't necessarily evil, just like he isn't necessarily good; the point is that he was repressed by societal expectations and wanted to be free without his good name being damaged, so he created Hyde. And arguably, Utterson isn't the paragon of goodness that people believe he is too, considering that his curiosity leads him to stalk and harass Hyde much like Enfield has done. There's no "good or evil" character and personally I believe that J&H characters' moral alignments can't be really collocated anywhere on the scale of good-evil, because what is exactly good and what is exactly evil? Hyde was created with the intent to do whatever without any damage being done to Jekyll's good reputation. If I recall correctly, one of the transcripts of the book, apparently Jekyll reveled in certain pleasures to the point where people had pushed him away, meaning that these rumors must've been real nasty if people didn't want to talk with him anymore, that's perhaps when Jekyll realized that he needed a camouflage, and he created Hyde— he could also be doing more innocent things like crossdressing (which was illegal and scandalous btw, for both genders because you could get arrested for public indecency, even a woman wearing pants was looked and frowned upon) or exploring his feminine side more, and at first Hyde could've been created for the purpose of exploring another side of himself, and then things escalated quickly the more Hyde gained autonomy, which is why the experiment went out of control and things ended up the way they did.
Also, pop-culture didn't do anything to "ruin Jekyll and Hyde".
Even in the musical, which is considered the greatest offender for making Jekyll a perfect good doctor: Jekyll isn't a saint, he has flaws; he cheats on his wife with a prostitute even as Jekyll, neglects her, has a short temper, leaves and comes late at his own engagement party for the sake of his work and then goes to a brothel, and generally refuses to acknowledge (these are all blatant signs of OCD/depression btw) that he wasn't alone in this, he is extremely hated by the governors for seemingly more reasons besides his experiments and generally seems to be a controversial figure in the medical field. This leads me to believe that some people just want something they can actively complain and have an hate-boner about because we don't have anything else left to do if not stir up issues which do not exist.
Also I just want to point something out, life expectancy for men in the victorian era was 40 years old, there isn't anything relatively wrong with The Glass Scientists making Jekyll 35 years old, because he basically lived everything that he had to live, as grim as it sounds— and there isn't anything wrong with making him conventionally attractive either, because you guys seem to think that a 50 years old is an "old man" even for modern standards, and that isn't true at all. My parents are in their 50s and I can assure you they aren't decaying corpses, let people have their conventionally attractive doctor, it isn't hurting anyone.
Also you can't talk about "respecting accuracy" when you add historically inaccurate things in your alternative universe, this especially applies to how some of you portray LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent characters but I won't go in detail with this because knowing how people are today, even if I am neurodivergent and queer myself, I'd be accused of discrimination nevertheless. The fact that the story is set IN THE VICTORIAN ERA is a crucial point of Jekyll's development as a character and the reason why Hyde came to life.
TL;DR stop gatekeeping y'all are cringe as fuck

Who do you think would be most likely drink Dr Jekyll's potion?
Out of just the J&H cast? Because the most obvious answer is that none of them would. There are not that many characters but like, of the characters we have, Poole just straight up wouldn't, Enfield doesn't seem that dumb to me, Lanyon would be the absolute least likely to drink it, and Utterson...
Utterson wouldn't just stroll into Jekyll's lab and start chugging chemicals, but I think he'd be the only one to trust Jekyll if the man offered the potion to him. On the other side, I feel like he'd be the most likely to have it slipped into his drink without his knowledge.
Most of my reason for picking Utterson is less because he would and more... the promise of an interesting storyline. He already gave us what his alter ego name would be! Mr. Seek! It's perfect!
Since the Jekyll and Hyde divide is a product of undoing repression... perhaps Mr. Seek would just be like... a party guy. Always going out to see plays, drinking the finest wines, kissing his friends smack dab on the lips, etc..

At first when I read abour Mr Enfield (R. Enfield even) I thought that Stevenson was making a reference to Dracula but then I realized that J&H was written way earlier and I realize Stoker might have been making a reference and it all just went right over all of our heads

My mom has listened to J&H, chapter 1
Her thoughts:
~She loves Enfield, so much. She thinks he’s wonderful.
~She doesn’t really have any thoughts on Utterson yet
~She is concerned over why the little girl and Enfield were out at 4am
~She started cackling when Hyde trampled the little girl.

okay so I was listening to the Jekyll & Hyde musical and like. What if I made a Ride The Cyclone J & H AU??
Mischa is Jekyll(and Hyde; I will have to find a name for his alter ego), Talia is Lisa, and Noel is Lucy obviously(cause of Monique Gibeau). Ocean is Simon because that leaves the funny implication that before Mischa and Talia, Talia and Ocean would've been a thing. Kinda. Also I'm taking creative liberties so characters that are not in the musical but exist in the book will be there(im reffering to Lanyon and Enfield). I think I'l make other changes too?
Anyway either Constance or Ricky is Utterson. Actually maybe I'll just make them both Utterson? Penny is Lanyon. Or maybe Penny is Utterson? Anyway Ezra is Enfield. I'll include Father Markus, Karnak and maybe Virgil too. Maybe the cut chaarcers also? I'll find a way. (And characters from legoland besides penny and ezra maybe?)
I'll elaborate on it more if people ask.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Gets Aurora Colour Variant At Rs 2.20 Lakh
Royal Enfield has widened the Meteor 350 range by launching the new Aurora variant of the cruiser.
It gets a couple of changes over other variants of the bike and comes with a price tag of Rs. 2,19,900 (ex-showroom, Chennai) which places it between the Stellar and Supernova trims of the Meteor 350.
RE Meteor 350 Thoroughly Overhauled
The new Aurora variant of the Meteor 350 comes equipped with spoke wheels and tube tyres, unlike other versions which get alloy wheels and tubeless rubbers.
Moreover, the engine case, exhaust system, and a few other components have been bestowed with chrome finishing. All of this is done to enhance the retro appeal of the bike.

What’s new with Aurora trim?
The trim introduces three new colourways and also debuts LED headlights to the range. Royal Enfield might make the latter feature standard with this range in the future.

Meteor 350 is underpinned by a dual-cradle J-series chassis which is suspended on 41mm RSU telescopic suspension at the front and twin shocks at the rear. Anchorage duties are handled by a 300mm front disc and a 270mm rear disc which are aided by a dual-channel ABS as standard.
In terms of features, it comes with a semi-digital instrument console, a USB charger, circular LED DRL and a side-stand engine inhibitor, among many.

Its dynamic cruising ability and dependable performance have resonated deeply with our riders.

howdy!! I am here to ask you for J&H headcanons, gimme :)))
oooo yayayayay!!!!! thanks for asking hehe <333
lets get into it!!!
1. enfield cross dresses and goes by he/her pronouns!!! (….. this would probably be in a modern au lolol) (but omg imagine he had a sister or smth and when he was alone he just tried on her dresses- IM GETTING TOO INTO THIS MOVING ON)
2. HENRIEL QPR- jekyll and utterson hold hands and kiss and snuggle and stuff and it breaks Lanyon’s brain when they say they arent dating (poor lanyon doesnt quite understand what a qpr is but he tries his best to support them anyway)
3. as much as I love your 2 meter tall hyde, I hc that he’s 4’11. because. short.
4. jekyll likes to think that he and hyde arent the same person, while hyde knows better and totally thinks they are
5. Jekyll is tall. Utterson is taller. (not by much but still enough)
6. Hyde gives the best hugs, but he never hugs anyone (mainly bc he doesnt want them to know that hes the best hugger), so everyone thinks uttersons the best (hes a close second)
7. utterson loves tea with a passion. has a whole shelf of it. its a tea collection at this point.
8. utterson has a little monocle and its adorab- I mean very dignified
9. Jekyll/hyde is aromantic
10. utterson is aroace
11. poole writes in his free time (mainly romance, its his favorite genre)
12. utterson loves mystery books. he always figures them out before the end, though
13. curling up by a fire with a blanket and a warm cup of tea (preferably made by utterson) is jekylls favorite activity- its a shame he can only do it during the colder months
14. jekyll is always warm and utterson is always cold. jekyll likes to sleep in the cold and utterson likes to sleep in the warmth. cuddling solves this problem.
15. hyde is freezing to the touch, almost like a dead body. its very noticeable and he’s extremely proud of how off-putting it is
i have many more but this is pretty long, so I’ll end it for now!!! TYSM FOR THE ASK!!!! <333333
