On September 9th, 1988, BBC News reported that England cricket captain Graham Gooch and seven other team members had been refused visas to travel to India, resulting in the upcoming tour being cancelled. The players were on a UN blacklist over having participated in rebel tours to Apartheid South Africa.
Colin Moynihan, Sports Minister in the Thatcher Government, appeared to be primarily concerned about the ‘serious implications for international cricket’, while the Secretary General of the Commonwealth said that India should be applauded.
According to BBC reporting:
"…Graham Gooch's appointment as captain of the England team by the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB) was considered controversial because of his rebel tour to South Africa in 1982. Kim Barnett, Alan Lamb and Philip Newport were placed on a UN blacklist for playing in the Republic last winter. The other four players - John Emburey, Robert Bailey, Graham Dilley and Robert Robinson - were already on the list for playing in previous seasons…"
The TCCB were apparently ‘bitterly disappointed’ and by October had announced an alternative tour to New Zealand. This plan didn’t last long, and was soon called off by New Zealand cricket administrators over fears of anti-apartheid protests.
Within months, the ICC issued a ruling that international players who ‘moonlighted’ in the South African domestic competition would also face bans.
Graham Gooch subsequently toured internationally as England captain, including to India, and retired from Test Cricket in 1995, 20 years after his debut.
In 1990, a rebel tour to South Africa led by Mike Gatting had to be abandoned due to intensifying protest activity.
In 2010, Paul Weaver in The Guardian referred to the 1990 England tour as the 'most reprehensible of all’, quoting long term anti-Apartheid activist and British MP, (Lord) Peter Hain;
"…This was on the cusp of a historic change in South Africa. So for Gatting and his tourists to go, clodhoppers and all, into this transformative moment was grotesque beyond belief. It was not surprising it caused such offence. The rebel tours were a doomed attempt to shore up the tottering apartheid system, when it needed to be isolated…"

England Are Hopeful Of Archer Playing T20 World Cup In June, Says Rob Key
Tumblr media
T20 World Cup: England men’s managing director Rob Key is hopeful that fast-bowler Jofra Archer will be available to play in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, happening in the USA and West Indies from June 1-29. Archer has been out of competitive cricket since May last year after suffering the recurrence of a long-standing right elbow injury while playing for Mumbai Indians in the 2023 IPL. After missing out on Ashes and ODI World Cup, Archer was seen training with the England squad during their white-ball tour of the West Indies in December last year. England will be defending the Men’s T20 World Cup they won in 2022 in Australia through their campaign opener against Scotland in Barbados on June 4. "Our plan is the T20 World Cup, building him up slowly. I saw him bowl in the Caribbean and it was like he'd never been away," said Key to the BBC's Tailenders podcast. He also revealed that Archer was keen on playing IPL 2024, but wasn’t given the go-ahead for it. "I don't want to get back to this thing where he plays and then goes down again. He wanted to play in the IPL, but we said not this time. Hopefully the years he has missed he can add to the end of his career. He is such a talent." Key, the former England cricketer, also called for dedicated windows to be made in the cricketing calendar for Test cricket in order to protect the oldest format of the game. His views come in the light of South Africa sending a weakened Test squad to New Zealand as the two-match series in February clashes with second season of SA20. "Test cricket needs to have windows. There was a two-month window for the Ashes last summer - that could be one. There could be one at Christmas. There are all of these franchise competitions, like the IPL, and there is a global white-ball competition every year. Test cricket needs a window where you can't play anything else." "The rest of us - England, Australia, India and the International Cricket Council in particular - need to look after the other countries. We have to stop being snobby about Test cricket. We have this view that you can't play Test cricket unless you have played 150 red-ball games, or play in a certain way. No, just pick the most talented players," he concluded. Read the full article

Dreadful Pie Research and Links Part 1:
1: Intro to Sweeney Todd and the Penny Dreadful
The story is about how Sweeney Todd enacts his revenge on Judge Turpin for getting him arrested and stealing his child away just because he was married to the women he had a crush on. He meets Mrs Lovett after he arrived back home from being released from prison. He decides to take a different name so that no one will recognise him, that being Benjamin Barker. Her pies were really bad then and so Sweeney Todd was soon helping her out, he took the room above which was where he used to live with his wife and child. He turned into a barbers, a bit later he finally meets Judge Turpin to give him a shave he was close to having his revenge but got interrupted. Turpin then left and Sweeney got very angry as he was so close to what he wanted.
He then decided that a way to help get a supply of meat for Mrs Lovett would be to kill his customers. They got a supply of meat and many people started to come to Mrs Lovett's store, as they turned out to be delicious. No one knew only Sweeney + Lovett, but there was a women who was known to be 'crazy' as she suspected something going on because of the smell from the smoke of the dead bodies. Lovett kept on chasing her away when she would come to the building as she didn't want to go out of business. Later on we learn the women is actually Sweeney's wife, which Lovett told earlier that she had taken poison a while after Sweeney had gone to prison as she became depressed. Instead of her dying it just made her brain go a bit mad.
A lot happens after that but in the end Sweeney gets his revenge on Turpin, Sweeney's child escaped from Turpin, Sweeney accidentally killed his wife and then Mrs Lovett out of anger from not telling him the truth about his wife, and then the child they took in earlier killed Sweeney.
(The reason I don't want to write another paragraph of the whole story is because this post would be too long and this slightly feels like pirating).

Both of these dishes were for the working class.

Pies were invented in Egypt, the first recipe for one was for a chicken pie. The people who discovered the tablet of the recipe think that it was carved out prior to the 2000 BC. It was then taken over to Rome then Greece.

I do think that this may have been a good use a meat for him and maybe others when the meat is first fresh but if it isn't fresh I don't think it is a good idea as you have a higher chance to get food poisoned. I personally would not do this myself as I don't think it is a good idea.
6: Weird Food Experiences (personally)
In other places this may not seem weird but some weird foods I have eaten may seem weird in others. I tried dried mealworms or crickets that were flavoured cheese and onion. When I used to eat other meats I did have alligator + kangaroo burger once, (they weren't mixed they were two separate burgers had on different days).

9: Other foods:
Sustainability - the ortolan bunting is being hunted into extinction because it is prized as delicacy and eaten whole. A French delicacy being eaten to death
I don't think this is okay, as we have already made so many species already extinct, instead it should be protected as any other endangered species and should have a law to allow for the number of its species to grow back. We have the same problem with cod and other fish as some are being over-fished. This shouldn't happen to other species either.
10: SCI-FI Films:
Mos Espa is one of the cities on the outer rime of Tatoonie. It's a vast shopping area which you could find various fruits, meats and beverages. The main three places known in Mos Espa are Gragra's gorgmonger booth, Akim's Munch outdoor café and Jira's fruits stall.
The troll market set was made in a Hungarian mine cave. It was made into a vibrant and busy environment. Many of the characters from the show are unique in their own was as either facial structure or body structure have been proportioned in many different ways, which make them very different from humans whilst is the main aim of it. Out of these characters I find the organ grinder quite appealing as the were made to be the same size as a human even though they are supposed to be smaller.
It was said that the mechanics of this character was quite hard as you had to find just the person to be able to get into the costume and then be able to more the animatronics of the costume too.
Tumblr media
youtube
Ideas I got from this clip were that for vendors and sellers are protective of their customers, this maybe to make sure there is still a way that the customer will come back again. The coloured lighting used fit the settings of each scene as well, as the darker lighting with some vibrant parts fit well with the situation going on at the time.
11: ArtWork
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities
Tumblr media
This is one of the pages from his 4th notebook, pages 37A and 37B. These show some character art from Hellboy 2 and ideas he's had. I think that this is a useful way when doing this kind of work. As I've done this myself sometimes and I think it is quite helpful.
Tumblr media
This is from the 3rd notebook, pages 22A and 22B. There a splotches of fake blood and symbols around some artwork. This sort of works like the other page but has more of an eerie feel to it, as some when first seeing it might mistake the blood for the real thing, instead of noticing that it is actually fake. Which in a way helps as it conveys many different ideas in many different peoples minds of the reasoning of him using fake blood on these pages.
12: Sculptures:
HR Giger was an artist mainly worked in blending human physique with machines with air-brushing and he became very well known as of it. Most people will know his work from the Alien movie, he was inspired by the creature from the two lines in The Necronomicon, as it was pictured as a metallic-looking freakish creature with an eggplant-shaped head.
Tumblr media
(a more modern version of the Alien)
Guillermo Del Toro's movie Mimic sort of goes on the same basis as The Alien movies as it has a weird creature in it which effects what happens to the characters int the movie. In his movie though he uses cockroaches which are normal to this world, but they're harmful as they are carrying the 'Strickler's Disease". This way of utilising bugs in his works make sense as many people believe that certain bugs are harmful as of disease whilst some are but because they carry poison in their system to help protect them from predators.
Tumblr media
The designs of these creatures is that the cockroaches have in a way mutated to the disease they are carrying, like how some species do when in a highly radiated area. Whilst the Alien is very much built for the planet it came from, but has now been transported to Earth and now has to adapt to the environments of the planet and the creatures on it. It doesn't really get any physical changes but I think in the way the creature thinks it has become more strategic.
Tumblr media
The pricing of some of the works on this page is understandable, as for simpler projects which don't take much time will cost less and once more difficulty, time and materials are being used the price will rise as it should and it is reasonable. There are quite a few different designs used, as some are simple with being just a keychain of a paw from a creature whilst some are full-body characters. I think the methods used when making are close to what we have done with some of our projects but instead are more precise so when being mass produced they may have a silicone mold of the design so that they can stick close to the original project, as much as they can.
For this artist their work is different with the style, as it has a slight more cartoony feel to it than the realistic feel you get from The Monster Sandbox. The has been some realism in some of their work, which I think helps with the feel of the character. The quality of work is very good, as you can tell they have taken the time to make sure their work is at the best standard that it can be at. The scale of their work ranges in many different ways as they are able to make big figures to simple illustrations. Their paint work is exceptional as they have the understanding of how the paint will be effected by natural light and which pieces will need lighter colouring than other places. With outcomes they have made, each piece has probably been check to make sure it is at the best quality and from what is seen it is at that.
13: Tutorials
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
When making my snake head I did look at a sculptor on Youtube that I've known about for quite a while now. I used this video with helping my work, as the head shape is close to what I wanted for my snake.
youtube
I think for these tutorials as a whole, they use many different techniques which will help people depending on what they're making and what effects they want shown on their sculpture/figurine.

Charles III is King of 15 countries. But for how much longer?
Across most Commonwealth realms - those countries in which he is monarch - the debate over whether to move to a republic is a live issue, albeit to varying degrees.
Here, BBC correspondents describe the mood in a selection of nations where King Charles is still head of state - and explore the chances of those countries replacing the monarchy any time soon.
St Kitts and Nevis
Spectators eyes are glued to the pitch at this cricket match. It's a clash between local rivals, as the women's teams from the islands of St Kitts and Nevis face off against each other. The UK's influence remains strong here, right down to the choice of national sport.
St Kitts and Nevis is a dual-island nation situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. This was where English colonists first settled in the Caribbean. But even after almost 40 years of independence, there's an ongoing debate about this nation's identity, and whether it should transition to a republic.
In the spectator stands, low-level chatter is interrupted with cheers and words of advice shouted over to players. During a lull in the game I head over to ask people for their opinions.
Few are willing to express their views, but those that do are ambivalent.
Sharlene Martin says she wants more information but questions the benefit of having King Charles III as head of state: "The Chinese and Taiwanese look after us more than England, so I don't know."
Ahead of sunset, I head over to a local bar to chat with more locals. Manager Julian Morton says it's a matter of national pride: "Going republic says we have arrived. So it lets the rest of the world know that we can handle our own affairs."
Tumblr media
Julian Morton
Julian's friend Christopher Roberts agrees but tells me that St Kitts and Nevis is still trying to bounce back from the negative impact of coronavirus. So he doesn't see becoming a republic as a pressing priority: "We're just having discussions, street talk about it."
Compared to other Caribbean nations such as Barbados, Christopher sees St Kitts and Nevis as a "young independent nation", and so he thinks change could take a while.
Barbados, once nicknamed "little England" took the step in 2021, renewing momentum for other realms to follow.
But for the transition to happen here, the constitution of St Kitts and Nevis requires that the people vote for it in a referendum. In fact, of the remaining eight realms around the Caribbean, only Belize would not need a referendum. Instead, the decision would be made by its national assembly.
Tumblr media
The hurdles that referendums need to clear differ across countries. In St Lucia, the Bahamas, Jamaica and St Kitts and Nevis, referendums need a simple majority of voters to pass. But the transition could be more difficult to achieve in Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines, because two-thirds majorities are required.
But it's not always a done deal. In 2009, St Vincent and the Grenadines held a referendum. Forty-five per cent of voters chose to replace Queen Elizabeth II with a ceremonial president - falling far short of the two-thirds required.
So, though a seemingly simple question, these are detailed matters that each Caribbean realm is grappling with in its own way.
Australia
Walking the streets of Sydney, you would struggle to find any sign a new King of Australia is about to be crowned.
A week out, all bar one person I spoke to admitted they did not know when the Coronation was. One student even confessed he did not know what it was.
"I don't care, it's irrelevant," was 73-year-old Graham's frank assessment - a fairly accurate picture of the general mood here.
Landmarks across the country will be lit up purple on Saturday night, but events to mark the occasion appear to be subdued and scarce.
And special television coverage of the event is limited - a far cry from the wall-to-wall treatment that royal weddings and the Queen's funeral received.
King Charles isn't as popular as Queen Elizabeth II was and his Coronation comes at a time when Australia's republican movement has its strongest foothold in decades.
Almost 25 years since the country voted against cutting ties with the monarchy in a referendum, there's growing momentum for another go.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has previously said a republic is "inevitable" and last year appointed a junior minister for the republic - a historic first. In nearby New Zealand it is a similar story - Prime Minister Chris Hipkins this week said he's a republican and believes the country will "ideally" leave the monarchy one day.
The monarchy has a purely ceremonial role here in Australia and people tell me the country has long forged its own identity outside of the UK's shadow.
Others cite the lasting impact of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a reason to cut ties.
"We're probably more anti-colonial than we have ever been," 17-year-old Estelle Paterson says.
"Having an English king here just seems so odd," her friend Monika Januleviciute adds.
Tumblr media
Monika (left) and Estelle
But any Republic of Australia is still years away, at least.
The government is first holding a referendum on recognising Indigenous people in the constitution.
And Australians are still divided on how to appoint a head of state - should they be elected by the people, or appointed by parliament?
But most importantly, recent polls indicate support for a republic is still below the high standard required to pass a referendum here. A majority of Australians would need to vote yes and there would also need to be majority support in at least four of Australia's six states.
Canada
By Jessica Murphy in Toronto
If there was one word to sum up the feelings many Canadians have about King Charles, it would be "indifferent".
And speaking broadly, while Canadians held an affection for Queen Elizabeth II, that same fondness is not felt for King Charles.
Opinion surveys suggest Canadians are growing more interested in distancing the country from the monarchy.

The most recent, an Angus Reid poll released in late April, indicates that a majority of Canadians - just over half - don't want the country to continue as a constitutional monarchy for generations to come.
And two-in-five respondents said they didn't care about the coming Coronation.
That lack of enthusiasm is reflected in Canada's modest planned celebrations. There will be a televised hour-long event, hosted in the nation's capital of Ottawa and federal landmarks illuminated in emerald green to mark the occasion.
The King's ascent to the throne last year only served to spur debate on the country's ties to the monarchy.
That was especially true in Quebec, where the institution is viewed more negatively than in other regions - a sentiment tied to the province's history of being a French-speaking region once under British colonial rule.
Last December, Quebec passed a law making an oath of allegiance to the monarch optional for members of the legislature.
But none of that means that Canada will join the ranks of Barbados, Jamaica or Australia, who have had - or are having - a formal debate on the monarchy's future.
Changing the current system would need approval from both the House of Commons and the Senate in parliament, as well as the unanimous consent of all 10 provinces - seen by most political analysts as an impossible hurdle.
