My friend brought up Jekyll and Hyde when I was explaining manifestation theory to her last time, and it made me wonder if the end result is gonna be some sort of having to merge/coexist/exist as one being type of thing.

Is There a Chance Mike and El Were Swapped? Who are Mike's Parents?
Tumblr media
This is a part 2 to my "Mike isn't Biologically Related to the Wheelers" theory. However, after some new things I've found, I wanna revoke my previous statement lol. I do believe Mike is technically related, he's just not their son. He is possibly a nephew, Henry's son. El is a Wheeler. Holly could be Jane (which I think is already something theorized). This could be part of some timeline fuckery thing, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to talk about that so this is all I can offer lol
The Wheelers Have Photos of El as a Baby
I'm like... 90% sure these are photos of El/Millie.
If I am correct, then that also means both Mike and Holly do not have photos up in the Wheeler house other than photos taken at the same age they are in S1. They have no photos of them any younger, whereas Nancy does and supposedly El too.
Holly and Mike are the odd ones out... Hence why they're matching the same shade of blue and white collar in the family photo. They're likely family, just not their kids.
Tumblr media
This means that all these photos are Nancy -> Nancy -> El -> Nancy... And right above is a painting of 4 birds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They Literally Are Telling Us Straight to Our Face What's Going On
The Duffers love a twist that's right in front of you. If I'm on the right track, then it really was right in our face this whole time. Like, it really is such a Duffers thing for them to display El's baby pic right in front of us because "Nobody's gonna think twice, right?" WRONG BITCH
Mike introduces his family to El. "That's my sister Nancy. And that's baby Holly." Holly isn't a sister? "What are your parents like?" No response because El doesn't know, but also.. Mike just said it already. "Do they live close?" Closer than the both of you are probably thinking, buddy lmfao.
Later in the season, the kids pretend Mike and El are cousins. Connect this to when Mike tells El that once everything is over, she could live with him and his family. She'd have a mom, dad, sisters. El asks if he'd be like her brother, and he tells her no because "it's different." Well yes... Since you guys are cousins.
Mike tells El that she could have his room since he's in his basement all the time anyway. This is odd considering Mike owns a bunk bed. El is replacing his spot in the Wheeler family. This also another example of Mike not fitting in with the rest of his family.
El wears what Mike wore in his first scene, symbolizing that she's meant to be in Mike's place. She also wears other pieces of his clothing like his jacket. El wears Nancy's dress. El wears a blonde wig matching Holly's hair. She's meant to be part of their family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
El spends the whole show searching for her family, whereas Mike doesn't fit in his.
Karen tells Nancy that she must've been swapped at the hospital because there's no way she gets her good traits from them. Hopper tells Enzo that his son Mikhail is not his son because Mikhail is smart, therefore there is no way Enzo could be his biological father. alright.
Who are Mike's Parents?
While his mother would be unknown, I'd say it's likely Henry is Mike's father.
• Star Wars is the most referenced film franchise in ST and it's by none other than Mike. It's his top 3 favorite films. Star Wars is also a new poster in his room for S5.
Everyone knows the twist. The big bad is Luke Skywalker's father. Luke and Leia realized they're twins after being romantically involved with one and other. I don't think Mike and El are twins, though. There are more implication they're extended family to each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Argyle calls Mike "Romeo." During the monologue, there is something that says "Montague" behind Mike. This could be implying the antagonist (Henry) is Mike's father.
• They share very similar dialogue to one and other. Here's a great post that compiles a lot of the parallels in their lines made by the one and only @heroesbyler !
• And outside of their similar dialogue, they're still very alike to one and other.
Will and Henry parallel because of their experiences with the Shadow Monster/possession and being outcasted from society.
El and Henry parallel because of their experiences with growing up abused in a lab and being outcasted by society.
Mike and Henry parallel because they are different within their family and feel outcasted by society/family. But, what I've also noticed is that their similarities are based on very specific things... Things so specific that it's honestly just giving father and son. Here's what I've found:
Mike and Henry both hold a special place for things that are different and rejected from society. They both put them on a pedestal. Henry finds comfort in spiders because how people are often afraid of them, but Henry believes they are just misunderstood. He resonates with this as he feels rejected from society and outcasted. In a recent panel, Finn tells us that Mike trusted El so much and wanted to help her because he naturally gravitates towards outcasts, as he is one himself. This is literally basically what Henry felt about El.
They both were very keen to helping El for basically the same reason. Like father, like son.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are both different from their family, isolating themselves from them in their own safe space in their homes. Henry had his attic, Mike had his basement. Both are depicted as lonely individuals, with Henry arguably struggling much more with that due to having nobody at all. I go more into how Mike is isolated from his family and struggles with a sense of loneliness in the first part of this theory.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry's wardrobe consists of mainly browns and oranges. Mike's closet in S1 is completely blue and so is almost all of his wardrobe throughout the whole show. Mike in his photo is basically wearing basically the same shirt as Henry just blue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• They look alike. The same facial structure and sunken cheeks. Young Henry's actor has the same wider smile and I think also has freckles, which I missed. Mike's nose looks more similar to Victor, which would be his grandpa. He gets his eye color from Virginia or his biological mother. His darker hair would likely come from his biological mother as well.
He even has the same comb-over in the epilogue leak.
Tumblr media
• Mike has a very, VERY Henry coded song in his playlist. It's Mad World by Tears for Fears. I mean... Come on. This is insane.
Tumblr media
• There's shadow that follows Mike throughout the show. It covers his left eye and left side oc his face. This only occurs to Vecna/Henry in Dimension X/Vecna Victims. @wheeler-things also has a bigger post about this, which is what introduced me to this detail!
Mike Being "Part" of Henry/Vecna
If Henry is his father, that could explain some things like how he saw El in the void and how he reached into the UD/Will's vision during Trick or Treating. He is weirdly intuitive about things he shouldn't know related to the UD.
I do believe Mike's monologue was influenced by Vecna to some degree. Not only does the lighting suggest he's being controlled by him, Vecna also.. Pauses? For god knows why?? Vecna literally tells El he wants her to watch and then proceeds to let Mike's monologue go on.
Mike tells El she's a superhero -> El stops smiling -> El looks over to Vecna, who we then learn has been frozen in place this whole time -> El realizes that too
Tumblr media
Mike and Vecna could be fighting for control. Makes sense since considered this is all being called a "Mind Fight"
Now let's talking about Will and sensing Henry/Vecna.
Mike walks in the background ominously as Will talks about what he's experiencing. Will tells him he's here....
Tumblr media
Here in the house and in Will. There's a separation.
While Mike has the ability to pull him out of his visions easily, he also happens to be there every single time Will senses something in S3 and in S4. They even emphasize it to remind the audience that "Mike is, in fact, there... Just thought you guys should know. No big reason."
Tumblr media
Just before that last shot of Will sensing near Mike, we get this shot of Mike while Will talks about sensing Henry:
Will is completely out of focus and nearly out of frame by the end. It's pushing in directly towards Mike. His left eye is completely dark and gets darker throughout the whole scene as well. In scene from S2 I just talked about, Mike's right eye is actually pitch black. Hmmm
Mike and Realizing Henry is his Father
The stories underneath the Mike photo in this S5 bts could possibly be giving us a glimpse of how Mike would react to Henry being his father and his arc.
(I'm going based off what I find on google here btw so i'm so sorry for these likely butchered sumamaries lol)
I won't go too much into The Swiss Family Robinson because there really isn't anything that stands out to me to connect to the actual story, but it follows a big family that got stranded on an island. They all grow up there basically. There's themes of family unity and independence.
Treasure Island is a story about moral ambiguity. It follows a boy named Jim Hawkins who goes on a coming of age journey while on a mission for treasure across seas. He does what he feels is right and moral. He is very brave, intelligent and courageous. Sounding a lot like Mike lol.
Long John Silver is the complex antagonist of the story. He is a charismatic leader. Despite being the antagonist, he's still someone the MC can end up sympathizing and learning from. While he's cruel and manipulative to get what he wants, he still has moments of kindness and genuine care.
Jim is consistently foiling John's plans, much like Mike did in S2 and S3 with Henry. In the end, Jim and John learn a lot from each other and develop as characters as a result.
Mike is a character that thinks very black and white. He loves superheroes and dislikes the bad guys. He has a very "Us vs Them" mentality. While he's the only one not afraid to carry Dart besides Dustin, the moment he realizes it's connected to the UD, he wants to kill it. This part of Mike could use a bit of development because even the show itself doesn't believe in this logic. Bad Guys vs Good Guys isn't the point of this story.
I think him discovering his true parent(s) to be Henry could be an interesting way to explore this aspect of his character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
El looks nearly identical to Karen
I know some people theorize El is Henry's daughter, but she looks more likely to be Karen's daughter just by looks and the evidence I already shared. Mike looks more like a son than just a nephew to Henry.
Just like Henry and Mike, El and Karen share the same exact cheekbone and face structure. El also has the same exact dimple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Karen's speech to Nancy matches with El perfectly.
"People are always saying that you can't, that you shouldn't. That you're not smart enough, not good enough. This world - it beats you up again and again until eventually... Most people just stop trying. But you're not like that. You're a fighter. You always have been [...] I'm proud of you that you stood up for yourself. That you stood up to those shitheads. And if you believe in this story, then finish it."
El always being controlled and held down by men in her life, always told she can't go somewhere or do what she wants to do. She's relentlessly bullied in Lenora. El stands up for herself regardless in the end. She is a fighter.
The Wheeler Parents have Yet to Actually Meet El
I mean... Don't you think that's interesting..?
She's found family in all her friends. She's found family in Hopper. She's met or is known by every single main character except the two that are likely her bio parents. Mike literally keeps her from his parents for the whole show.
While his parents are aware he's dating a girl, they don't know who she actually is. Mike hides all this supernatural shit in general from them. They've stayed out of the plot the whole show while still being relevant. Like I said in the first part of this theory, this is all for good reason. There is an important reveal.
What Does This Mean for El?
Now even though El could be a Wheeler, I don't think she's gonna choose to stay with them, or maybe this is all some timeline fuckery shit. I think the point is that she will choose for herself what's home to her and where she belongs. I don't think that's with everyone else though. Judging from the leak of Mike and Hopper, I think she's no longer with them. Not dead. She's alive!! Just somewhere else. That's what I think. They wouldn't ever kill her. That's stupid and cruel.
With Mike, I don't think he's gonna suddenly leave his family because of this and hate them, although it'll be hard for him at first when he realizes he's been lied to. But I think if anything, in the end this could finally bring them closer. Every single truth will finally come out.

An Addition To My Big TFS Analysis Piece re: Jim and Brenner
This hit me a couple days ago when I was discussing the Russian Prison Arc with Wilbur.
In Chapters 1 and 10, I discussed the over-the-top nature of Brenner's more aggressive interactions with Henry, and I connect that to parallels between Jim, Brenner, Hopper Sr., and Captain Brenner. I've included the relevant excerpts from both chapters just to catch people up.
Chapter 1:
"As I described earlier, [Brenner] works Henry up with shouting, intimidation, and low-ball insults to get Henry riled up enough to show his hand on his own, and then he follows it up immediately with comfort. It's as if he wants to get Henry upset without actually hurting him, and he uses non-violent physical intimidation paired with relatively low-impact digs to achieve that goal. His behavior very much brings to mind both Kali and on-screen Henry's path to accessing their powers: Something that makes you sad, but also angry. Brenner seems to be pulling on things that make Henry sad, angry, and/or fearful in order to bring out his abilities (or to draw out the Mindflayer, which Henry himself admitted was attracted to fear). He's just doing it in a way that isn't hurtful enough to drive Henry away."
Chapter 10:
"That particular interaction precedes a scene between young Jim Hopper and Lonnie Byers, wherein Jim impersonates his own father, as well as a couple other nameless cops, to intimidate "Victor" (read: Lonnie mistaken for Victor) into fessing up about his alleged hand in the attic attack involving Patty and Mr. Newby. Jim does a fairly good job with the voice and props, but he breaks character up multiple times. He's not authentically gruff the way Jim Hopper Sr. is. He's not authentically mean enough, and he’s not good enough of a liar to pull it off the entire time. He reacts genuinely, and then he scrambles to turn it into a Hopper Sr.-like reaction. It's good enough to fool Lonnie, a drunk, but not good enough to fool the audience. There's one last piece in that specific Lonnie-Jim scene that I’d like to take note of. Jim sets off a firecracker in a metal bucket to simulate a warning gunshot to try and spook "Victor" (Lonnie) into talking. This part stood out as noteworthy because it sets the precedent that Jim was never actually intending to do any harm. It sounded real, but there was never a gun at all. It was a bluff intended to get "Victor" (Lonnie) to behave. There was never any real danger at all. Brenner and Henry's relationship in The First Shadow very much runs in parallel to Jim's foray into impersonation. The hollering and the intimidation is all reminiscent of Neil, Lonnie, and Captain Brenner. You have to be your father. Much like Jim, Brenner’s not quite there in terms of action, though. Despite the very military-style tactic of break-down-build-up that Brenner tries to use on Henry, he's not a commanding military man like his father. He's not willing to take that next step into physicality like Neil and Lonnie did with their sons, just like Jim isn't able or willing to actually threaten "Victor" with a gun the way Hopper Sr. would have. Brenner would rather have a partnership with Henry, just like how Hopper hopes his bluff is enough to get "Victor" to cooperate without physicality.
I didn't realize until now that Jim in filmed canon uses the exact same antagonization strategy on Dmitri/"Enzo" (read: called Henry but not actually Henry, see: Henry vs Edward) that TFS Brenner does with Henry.
Observe:
Tumblr media
Jim gets in Dmitri's face and uses performative low-ball insults meant to upset him. He does it to start a fight specifically aiming to get both of them out of a dangerous situation/help them prepare for an upcoming fight against a demogorgon:
Tumblr media
And he doesn't let Dmitri know that that was his plan. He just starts acting like an aggressive asshole, insulting the man's wife and kid "out of nowhere", and resolves to tell Dmitri the truth about it later.
Also...Mikhail is stupid, you say? And Jim should stop talking?
Tumblr media
On top of that, there's also this bit re: Henry, Patty, and Brenner.
Tumblr media
The reason, in TFS, that Henry breaks things off with Brenner is that he has to get back to Patty...who for a good portion of Act II believes Henry to be a traitor. She believes he attacked her and her father maliciously in the attic, and that she can't tell anyone about it because Henry is "always listening" (let it be known that Henry was not, in fact, attacking maliciously, and that he has far too much on his plate at that point in time to be stalking Patty).
It's only when Mr. Newby tells her she has to save Henry from the red Mindflayer that Patty turns her perspective around. In returning to her, Henry is proving that he is not a traitor.
I've spoken at length about Patty and Henry's familial overtones, particularly the father-daughter aspects of their relationship, namely in Chapters 7, 8, and 9. Especially given Patty's heavy El parallels, the Mike-El father-daughter overtones, and now Jim behaving like Brenner while grilling "Enzo/Henry" about his son Mikhail...not to mention:
Tumblr media
As they say:
Tumblr media
Every day I feel more secure in my theory that TFS Brenner was putting on an aggressive act that did not come naturally to him/his aggression towards Henry was performative and utilitarian at its core with the aim of getting a grasp on the Mindflayer so that he could analyze and resolve the situation (though altruism obviously may not have been his only goal re: helping Henry)...just like Jim with Dmitri and the Demogorgon.

Time for some theory on the prequel!
What if the exorcism and the massacre happened the same night and this is one of the plot twists of the prequel?
I could be wrong, but I always found it strange that they angered the "demon" but he didn't attack them immediately. The soldiers hurt possessed Will, and a few hours later he sends them to die. And the exorcism happens the same night.
Also, Kate Trefry wrote both The Spy and The First Shadow. She was definitely thinking about the Creels when she wrote that episode
Tumblr media
I think it's interesting that in S2 the massacre happens before the exorcism. Maybe this means that Henry was still himself before the exorcism, but then something changed?
Basically, Will was saved by the exorcism, but in 1959 the exorcism made everything worse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry saying: 'She (Virginia) called a doctor, an expert' reminds me so much of The Exorcist.
Virginia calls a doctor, but we don't see him, but then Henry says that he was desperately trying to escape him. Martin Brenner. Maybe Henry is describing the "exorcism". But his and Victor's memories have been manipulated. Victor was found wandering on the side of the Highway, a parallel with one of the stories Terry investigated, so either they messed with their memories, or there's some time trickering going on, as a consequence of the exorcism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, I'm not the only one who noticed that many things look staged. In his monologue Henry says that people perform in a silly play, day after day, some of the Nina shots look so staged that there's even the "curtain" falling and an opera song playing. And the prequel about Henry is literally a play where the characters will also perform in a play. In every season there are mentions of living in a bubble, dreams, fakers, and people ruining the game. So the fact that we saw the night of the massacre doesn't mean that that's what really happened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, Victor doesn't mention the exorcism, but he talks about the massacre, and when he says that he thought that the demon would take him too, we hear Alice's screams and the Demogorgon. But there isn't any creature in the flashbacks. Unless it's not an actual creature, but another type of monster. Dr Brenner. That would mean that he was there, more evidence that we didn't see what really happened.
Brenner is in the play, so we're finally gonna see what he did. We need some answer before S5!
Tumblr media
Then there's the parallel with Hopper. The two cursed fathers in prison. Hopper hears the Demogorgon too, after he tells Enzo that the curse started when he was 18, (in 1959), and he mentions Uncle Sam. So this scene seems to imply that Sam Owens is connected to the curse.
Tumblr media
Other parallels between the prequel and 2x06.
Hopper, Joyce, Bob are in 2x06 and in the prequel. Owens is in 2x06, he is connected to the curse, and has parallels with two fathers: Hopper
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Walter Bishop, who also has a son named Peter (Henry's fake name was Peter Ballard) I wrote about other parallels with Fringe here, including Mike's memory of the first time he and Will met. I have so many thoughts on Owens and his role...
Tumblr media
Not sure who has Mike's role in the prequel. I thought Scott Clarke made sense, but maybe it's Patty. I don't think Henry is in love with her tho. And maybe that's the point. Patty is falling for Henry, but if he doesn't reciprocate, if he doesn't really trust her, maybe that's why she couldn't help him in the end. Will and Mike, on the other hand, have a deep connection and trust each other completely. And that helped Will to communicate with them.
I know that Mike and Will have been best friends since they were little kids, and Patty and Henry just met. But after a certain monologue people believe that between Mike and El it was love at first sight... So the prequel could show that, no, it doesn't work like that.
Other people have already talked about this shot. Cross, gates. And now we know that Bob was the son of a preacher. Another connection to the exorcism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, if the exorcism and the massacre happened the same night, maybe the word Friend behind Will here is a reference to someone who tried to help Henry in 1959.
Tumblr media
I have a crazy theory about Brenner, the exorcism, the demogorgon and why there's so much blood in the lab, but for now I'll just say this: if Brenner is in the shed scene, in Will's mind, when Joyce says that his birthday is on March 22, she would be right, because Matthew Modine was born on March 22, 1959.
If they really did it, they're insane, lmao!

The teaser of Starcourt Mall foreshadows seasons 3 & 4
I was scrolling through Maya Hawk’s Instagram after having watched DO REVENGE and came across that teaser of Starcourt Mall. I wanted to scroll on but when I saw THAT SHOT I was stunned to speak...
The commercial begins with the image of the earth. We see the Atlantic Ocean and North America. Blue and green. We hear: "Earth. America. Indiana. Hawkins" and THE FIRST THING TO APPEAR IN THE SHOT IS...the library’s clocktower!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything leads to the library. It is located in the centre of Hawkins. The library = the heart of the town = all the answers are there???? I don't think it's a coincidence the gate met in front of it and Vecna brought his victims there too.
Tumblr media
Next shot - Melvald's General Store. This is the store where Joyce has been working for 13 years from 1973 to 1985 (1+3 = 4 = 4 gates) (1+9+7+3+1+9+8+5 = 43. 4+3 = 7 = it was a seven). In s3: 1)Joyce is helping Hopper with his heart-to-heart there; 2) they plan a dinner at Enzo's; 3) also this is the place where Joyce starts feeling concerned about the magnets not working, so it's basically for the foreshadowing of these important moments taking place there.
Tumblr media
An important fact I somehow missed - IT'S LOCATED NEXT TO THE LIBRARY. In 3x02 we see a part of the building through the window jf the store + we even can notice a clock, which says...4 OCLOCK!!!
Tumblr media
Another shot of the clocktower. This time we see only a clock. It's 5 o’clock (5 letters in “Vecna,” “Henry”, “Creel”). 5 p.m. = 17:00 (1+7 = 8 = infinity sign and Vecna means “timeless” in Slovenian). Also, we hear one chime (001=Henry=Vecna). He was there from the very beginning.
Tumblr media
We see HAWKINS HIGH SCHOOL and an image of a tiger (=HHS Tigers Basketball Team but also tigers are in Will's and Mike's rooms). It’s s4 foreshadowing. However, a tiger is a symbol of courage and protection and it's associated with Mike & Will, but in s4 it's Lucas who becomes a part of the Tigers - he's in the basketball team but also Mike passes the pore of protector to him while he's in Cali. The word “dream” and the song that saves Victor Creel from Vecna was “Dream a little dream of me.”
Tumblr media
I don’t know what this thing is called in English, is it a playground spinner? But we have the identical one near the Creel’s house in s4. It’s should be the same. In this shot, we see a boy and a blonde girl (=Henry and Alice). They’re spinning counterclockwise (CCKW) - the same way Henry made the grandfather clock go counterclockwise + we have this Steve’s speech about going backwards.
Tumblr media
In the next shots we see Starcourt Mall and it says:
“Today, Hawkins is taking another step into the future with the brand new Starcourt Mall.”
In s3 we have direct Back to the Future references (they’re literally watching and discussing that film) but also there’re dozens of hidden ones throughout the whole show (I wrote about some here, here, here, here and here).
There's parking and cars in front o the Mall. The DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future is a car. The Cali group is travelling all over the US in the Surfer Boy Pizza Van (=car) and this is the place where Will and Mike share their feelings. Also, we can see 4 vacant places in the parking and Vecna needs 4 victims to succeed with his plan. Not to speak the mall is associated with blue light and blue light=the Upside Down=Vecna=bad.
Tumblr media
Now we see the interior of the mall and the first thing we are shown is a fountain with 8 fish. Again, 8=infinity=Vecna. Water is also a bad sign. We see water everywhere where something bad happens (proofs here).
Tumblr media
We see 3 pairs of people's legs. They're wearing converses (2 white pairs and a black one) and high socks with 4 red, 2 blue & 4 yellow and 6 green stripes (together it's 12. 1+2=3). EL, MIKE & WILL TOGETHER ARE POWERFUL ENOUGH TO DEFEAT VECNA.
Tumblr media
"Families (there's this mystery whose family is connected to Creels and I do believe it's Wheelers), friends ("We're friends! We're friends!" "We used to be best friends!" and "I think it would be easier if we're a team. Friends. Best friends", and, of course, teenagers (main characters are teens and most of Vecna's victims are teens)..."
Tumblr media
The girls in the second picture wear plaid shirts which are the same shades Will ad Mike wear in s4. And that muscular boy...we see him 4 times in this commercial. He's wearing a blue tank top and blue is associated with two people in the show. Mike and Vecna. It's done on purpose. To show there's some connection between these two. They're relatives!
"...can come together..." We see two boys: one wears a yellow t-shirt with blue, red & yellow stripes (red is between blue & yellow) and the other guy wears also something yellow beneath his blue & grey jacket (the colors of Mike's shirt with an envelope-like pocket).
Tumblr media
"TO SHOP"
We see Claire's with blue & yellow walls + claire means “clear” “light” or “bright” in french. The yellow light (Will) against the blue light (Vecna) + claire can be a noun meaning “light,” as in the phrase “clair de lune” (“light of the moon”). Also, there are hats and different accessories. We wear them on our heads. And how Vecna kills people? Through their minds!!!! + Dustin's THINKING CAP. They need some kind of protection for their mind from Vecna. And they found it in s4. IT'S MUSIC.
UPDATE! @octobergraea posted this screen and it hit me. This is the scene where Dustin and Mike are looking for a person to play DnD with them instead of Lucas. They failed. Mike says: "I hate high school" and winces. Is it because he thought of Will and the times they were younger and played DnD? Or was it because of something else? Vecna? Is he already Vecnad? But Dustin comes up with some idea and starts running, Mike doesn't get it and Dustin says to trust him. We see them running and we can clearly see blue light. Vecna is watching them. Mike then shouts: "Tell me things!" while the boy is skating (=Max) toward them, and Dustin shouts: "Wear a helmet!" and we also can see Crissy in the next shot. The warning relates to three of them! Crissy, Max and Mike. Mike will be Vecnad in s5 (or he already is in s4 but the GA don’t know yet).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"DINE"
We see Hot Dog on a Stick and the only reference I could think about was Mike refusing to eat pizza and saying: "I'm not a dog!" + considering the fact we see Mike barely eating this season and "a stick" may be called anything or anybody taller than 6 feet and less than 120 pounds.
"HANG OUT"
We see a man with the headphones, he's giving Max s4 vibes, but she should hang out while listening to the music non-stop because this is how she can avoid being Vecna'd and killed.
"AND ENJOY"
We see a kissing couple near the fountain. They wear blue & yellow pants. Here El is a man and Mike is a woman. The man in blue pants initiates the kiss = El initiates all their kisses in s3 and is thinking about Mike - that's why she's wearing blue. The girl (=Mike) is wearing yellow pants = Mike's thinking about Will during the kiss, and she doesn't even touch the guy (same with Mike).
Tumblr media
The next thing we see -the wall with red, yellow and purple colors. The flowers on the hill in the final scene of s4 are the same colors. A muscular man in a blue tank top is walking toward two women. He is passing a red (El) and purple (Mike & El) stripe and ends near the yellow (Will) one. And who is into muscles and has a crush on Superman? Michael.
Tumblr media
"With retail options..."
We move on to the clock where blue meets yellow in the west. it says 6:30 (6+3+0=9) or 18:30 (1+8+3+0=12. 1+2=3). In s4 6:30 was the exact time Mike's flight left for Cali (thanks @madwheelerz for that detail!!!).
So, Mike (=blue) flies to California (which is in the west) to meet Will (=yellow), and Vecna kills Chrissy (=Silver cat feeds).
Tumblr media
"...for every member of the family."
And we see the same girl who was kissing near the fountain. She's chilling with her friends, but without her boyfriend (=Mike's chilling with Will, Lucas and Max in s3 after having spent time with El). They're passing Wicks 'n' Sticks which is a candle store. Candle = yellow light = Will. Wick in slang means "very good, excellent, cool" ("Cool" "Cool" Byler scene) and I already wrote about a stick.
So, the girl in yellow pants = Mike, which means the words refer to him. He's a member of the family. The member of Creel's family, because everything in Stracourt Mall points at Vecna. CREELS AND WHEELERS ARE CONNECTED.
Tumblr media
We see shoes, again. But not just random shoes. Nike. The Greek goddess of victory. And purses ("You've packed already?" "I mean, I never really unpacked.") We still have a lot to unpack about the Wheelers.
Tumblr media
"INCLUDING THE GAP"
Whose mom is buying him clothes in GAP and Eddie mentions it in s4? Mike's. By the way, there is a kind of “urban legend” saying GAP stands for Gay And Proud. Sure, it’s a lie, but the fact the Duffers turned it into a joke, a joke connected to Mike in particular (like with “El? Not interested.” in s3). Also, we see a mannequin with a red scarf which foreshadows Vecna choking El during Mike's monologue in s4.
Tumblr media
We can notice our muscular boy with the yellow bag.
"THE WALDEMBOOKS"
Walden means "wooden alley" and we see 4 books "The Hunt for the Red October" in the window. Red October is the name of the soviet union's newest nuclear submarine. Submarine=water=bad. It also foreshadows russian connection to the Upside Down in s3 and s4.
Tumblr media
"AND SAM GOODY"
Sam means "told by God" and "God hears" (maybe the reference to Sam from Lord of the Rings) and goody - something that is particularly attractive, pleasurable, good, or desirable. Mike's thought about Will maybe, idk. I don't quite understand if it's a strange pocket on the jeans from the poster or what is it? If it's a pocket then it's a reference to Mike's envelope-like pocket in s4.
Tumblr media
"Starcourt Mall has it all."
Again, we see a fountain and some more shops: Radio Shack (the place where Bob worked in s2 changed location and Mike was the one to talk about Bob being the founder of AV Club in s2), ZALES (this is the name of a jewellery store where Mike wanted to buy El a bear), Claire's (claire = light = Mike sees Will in a yellow light), KAUFMAN SHOES (maybe the reference to Marta Kauffman - a writer and producer of "FRIENDS" and Mike is the one talking "friends" word a lot referring to Will in s4), Jazzercise (in s3 Steve thinks the guy who works there is a russian spy and also we have this video of Karen Wheeler dancing there...) and Wicks 'n' Sticks (mentioned before). Nine shops in total. 9.
Tumblr media
"AND DON'T FORGET"
Season 4. Joyce, Jonathan & Mike forgetting Will's birthday and other facts mentioned in the shed in s2 + we don't see Mike eating.
Tumblr media
"...a state-of-the-art food court..."
Vecna is artistic as well as Will.
The great cookie = "No sweetie pie"
Teppanyaki (teppan - “iron plate” and yaki - “frying; roasting; broiling”) = "Father's kidneys!" moment in Suzie's house in s4 maybe?
New York Pizza = Surfer Boy Pizza in s4
Hot Sam (Sam = Samwise = Mike)
Tumblr media
Burger King = "Heroes" by David Bowie: "I will be king and you will be queen"
Tumblr media
Julius - "youthful, downy-bearded" (Maybe reference to GA party DnD characters? Will draws them with beards).
Strawberry - Alexei, Pineapple - Mike, Peach & Lemon - I have no idea.
Tumblr media
"...is just an escalator ride away."
We see 2 boys (twins???) wearing identical clothes and having pies on their heads =Mike can't decide who his "sweetie pie" is - El or Will? And the guy (the one who went from red color to yellow) reaches one of the pies. Mike should choose between two siblings.
Tumblr media
"Featuring America's favourite place to cool down..."
He likes it cold. When it's cold I want to die. The preacher likes the cold. Cold is associated with blue color. Scoops Ahoy has a lot of blue everywhere. Blue=Vecna=evil. Bad things happen to Steve and Robin when they're wearing Scoops Ahoy's uniform. + it's related to after and water is bad.
Tumblr media
The girl is feeding the boy in glasses = El feeding Mike with pizza in s4 and earlier in the same scene he was wearing glasses he made for El.
Tumblr media
The colors of the boy's t-shirt are yellow, blue & purple. Do you remember Mike's bouquet for El with yellow and purple flowers? Mike = blue. Yellow flowers= Will. Purple flowers = him and El. 70/30=Will/Milkvan. By the way, we see that boy near the GAP and we already know GAP is associated with Mike.
At last, two final shots - we see the fountain for the fourth time and then - the boys from "come together" moment and the girl in yellow pants with her friends. They're near Claire's. Once again, "claire" means "light, clear". Everything will be clear for us, the audience, in s5.

Hi byler family!
I've just finished watching st4 vol.2 so that means that I've officially finished the whole season 4 and I'd love to share with you some thoughts I have... like both byler and general thoughts and ideas
Warning ⚠️ ⚠️ spoilers ahead
I'll start with my overall impressions :
St4 made me a bit disappointed... not only about byler stuff but in general... I don't know what did I expect, but I really do feel disappointed
Eddie💔 that's so heartbreaking that newly introduced and truly good character died in the same season that he was introduced 😢 however, his death was spectacular and in his style... I feel like he deserved way better
I'm happy Hop and Joyce are back and safe... but what happened to MURRAY, ENZO and MURRAY? I can only assume that they are still alive and minding their own businesses rn..
I feel sorry for Dr Owens... he was such a nice guy in my opinion;(
While whole season 3 was loaded with retro vibes and retro stuff I completely didn't feel the same vibes with s4... I know that the circumstances and action and basically everything was different but it is really seen that st4 is much more focused on action than background
The way Vecna kills people is really terrifying and horror like
I feel sorry for Robin because of her crush... after all, in the final scene they talk and something starts to sparkle between them... but still, my heart broke apart when I saw that girl kissing another boy
I hoped for Steddie and Ronance in my deepest dreams and I feel kinda disappointed rn hahah But we still have such wonderful stuff like fanarts and fanfics and the most important- our imagination!
I felt very confused about Stancy but I'm glad that Jancy is ultimately back- I feel kind of sorry for Steve.. but this whole thing with Nancy was really necessary for him to grow up I think
Suzie storyline was funny, you can't tell it wasn't! It was really minor element of the whole story but it was really cool to see Suzie again!
To be honest... I wasn't that much surprised with the ending of volume 1... I expected that Vecna is 001 as I've read about it here, on tumblr, even before the first s4 trailer was released so yeah... I also expected that this blonde assistant was 001 so it wasn't unexpected for me!
We can't trust the Duffers cause they say different things and do different things... to be honest, they irritate me a bit hahah
The issue with Will's birthday is still unsolved... I mean the Duffers like said that they forgot about it but it seems really improbable and without any sense to me that they put a date description on the video.. and also the fact that Will's birthday are the only one certain and official birthday!
That whole issue with the upside down creation is much more interesting to me now! Yeah, El opened the gate two times. However, she didn't create the Upside down- she only opened the gate.. so how was the Upside down created then?
Another veery interesting topic is the Will's connection with Henry and the whole Upside down.. I'd love to read some more updated theories about it!
And the most confusing for me was the ending of the whole season 4 and the issue with Max... is she still alive if the gate was opened at the end of s4? Also that scene where El tried to find her and communicate with her in the void but didn't manage to... I have sort of a feeling that this was just a trial of an artificial sustaining of the Hawkins peace and calm... bringing Max back and her being stuck in a coma was temporary just to let people escape from Hawkins and then again she dies and the gate is being opened again as we can see in the last scene of s4..
I'll make some comments about s4 byler in the another post... see you soon!

Ooookay gimme ellis and the corpse corporals headcanons I need them to survive the winter
I'M GOING TO TRY AND DO A MINIMUM OF FIVE EACH 🥰
The Corpsemen initially came to Isla Nublar under the guise of different and unassuming professions so as to not spread the inevitable panic that the knowledge of Masrani's hired failsafes were sure to do. No one wanted to think of the Jurassic World venture as capable of failing, so the Corpse Corporals would go out of their way to keep their covers, up until the point where their intervention was required. So Ellis knows them as civilians first, and Corpse Corporals second.
Tumblr media
Ellis and Malcolm
Malcolm Drake is not a good man, period. None of the Corpsemen are, but Ellis can feel it especially when it comes to Drake, even when he operated under the cover of a new InGen shareholder.
Malcolm views Ellis as an asset, essential to his team's survival against the Indominus. He issues a protection detail, consisting of Enzo and Clem.
Only wants straight-forward to the point facts, so definitely would not appreciate Ellis' sharp wit and snark.
Battle hardened and brittle, he has little sympathy for anything Ellis goes through. He's very out of touch with what is normal and what is too much for civilians, having been in the business for too long.
Really doesn't give a fuck about anything other than the payload, so he tends to laugh off Ellis' attempts at endearing the dinosaurs to him.
Tumblr media
Ellis and Clementine
Clementine first comes to Isla Nublar under the guise of a research assistant to Dr. Henry Wu. She is the first to meet Ellis as she is now, at a paleontology lecture they were both attending. They aren't immediate friends, just acquaintances who would occasionally sit together for all the following lectures they found themselves at, but when Clem is put on security, they bond over being in their respective male dominated professions. They become fast friends after that.
Given the nature of her profession, Clem doesn't have a lot of bonds with people outside of work. Her fellow Corpsemen are the beginning and end of her interactions, them being her family and friends. So she takes Ellis' friendship very seriously. (Ride or die, essentially).
So seriously, in fact, she snaps back against Malcolm The Captain Drake when he pushes Ellis too far.
Clementine also knows how George really is under all that charm, and definitely warns Ellis against him, much to Ellis' amusement.
Worried for her safety, Clem would definitely teach Ellis some self defense in whatever free time they had.
Clementine is Ellis' first success at getting the team to see the beauty in dinosaurs. Clem's religious beliefs at first made her proclaim them abominations, but over time, she appreciates them as living beings and respects that they are innocents, mere victims of their circumstance. She becomes very protective of the dinosaurs after that.
Tumblr media
Ellis and George
George had a brief history in poaching following his dishonorable discharge from the military, so he knows a thing or two about tracking. He comes to Jurassic World aptly adopting the cover of a hired tracker for escaped dinosaurs who haven't yet been chipped or are in need of chipping, and it's this skill that also makes him invaluable to the team later. He, alongside Clem, are also the ones who know the most about the dinosaurs, actually taking time to study everything about them instead of just how to kill them. So yes, he regularly quotes both Ellis' and Alan's writings, hoping to impress.
George develops a bit of an infatuation with Ellis. By a bit, I mean a lot.
Doesn't understand Ellis' love for dinosaurs, but tries.
It doesn't work, and he, like Clem, believes that Isla Nublar jeapordizes the survival of mankind, and must be destroyed. Unlike Clem, he is unshakable on this.
Ellis doesn't know if anything he does — from giving her his jacket when she's visibly cold, to going out of his way to not kill a dinosaur they're confronted with (at least not in front of her) — has an ulterior motive or not. No one really does (other than Clem).
Tumblr media
Ellis and Hector
The only one to have met Alan Grant before the job. And Ellis, too, for that matter. While he was working for the government, he was invited over for a dinner with the Grants to discuss the potential threat Jurassic World would have on national security following the unfortunate failure of the park before it. Ellis was very young when they met.
For his cover, Hector works as lifeguard and head of security at the mosasaurus water exhibit. Occasionally, he operates the feeding machine. That's how he meets Ellis again after all these years.
He loves hearing about fun dinosaur facts he can tell his kids when he calls them to say goodnight. Ellis definitely gives him some, a new one every day. He's completely taken aback that the mosasaurus isn't actually classified as a dinosaur, but a lizard. They have a running joke where they refer to it exclusively as "the imposter."
Ellis is the only one other than Clementine he's shown a picture of his kids to.
Big Dad Energy™, and very protective over Ellis. Regularly tells her that he hopes his daughter will grow up to be like her, only that his daughter would actually listen to him when he tells her to stay away from the dinosaur island.
Saves extra food for Ellis because although the Corpsemen are used to rationing, he remembers that Ellis isn't like them.
Like Clementine, Hector is quite religious. Unlike Clementine, Hector simply cannot abide dinosaurs co-existing with humans, given that he has children he has to think of. This is only cemented by witnessing the carnage on Isla Nublar firsthand.
Tumblr media
Ellis and Enzo
Enzo just really didn't have a brain for those long scientific names and anatomical diagrams. He knew where to aim when he shot, and that was good enough for him. He couldn't tell you a Triceratops prorsus from a Triceratops horridus. Heck, he couldn't tell you the difference between a Stegosaurus and a Spinosaurus, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. So, naturally, he would be in either the information centre or the resort library well late into the night (to prevent any teasing he may endure from his peers) trying to still learn. That's where he first met Ellis; she'd been perusing the books, jetlagged, and hoping to find a good enough read to pass the time.
Enzo and Malcolm have a father-son relationship in that Malcolm practically adopted him after he paid Enzo's bail. He holds Enzo to a much higher standard than he does the others, even foregoing the same "feline" theme of the codenames in favour of "Junior." So immediate embarrassment would arise in Enzo at having been caught out, especially by the woman he knew to be Ellis Grant (who so scornfully peered at him from the website sidebar when his inattentive eyes would drift from the fourth thesis of hers he'd tried to focus on that hour).
But she was anything but scornful when she sat with him. It became a nightly tradition, and it helped him a lot, learning from her directly.
His job at Jurassic World is in the observation deck, so he has eyes on all of Isla Nublar. He takes Ellis there one day.
Because of his deep loyalties to Malcolm, he doesn't speak out against him when he taunts Ellis. But he does later apologize, voice soft, eyes cast to the toes of his boots.
He won't admit it, but security detail with Ellis and Clem is the most fun he's ever had.
The second Corpse Corporal Ellis has managed to convert to the side of pro-dinosaur.
Matching raptor tooth necklaces with Ellis, Enzo, and Clem?

FORD V FERRARI: ED’s Very Important Thoughts on James Mangold’s Racing Movie
Tumblr media
It’s taken me a little longer than usual to write about this movie, maybe because I was so blown away when I first watched it that I really wanted it to sink in before I took the time to do any sort of writing. That doesn’t mean this will be a particularly insightful or intelligent review that might say something new about the movie that hasn’t been said in plenty of other reviews, but if you’re reading this far, you might as well continue, right?
I thought I knew what Ford V Ferrari was going to be from the first time I saw footage at CinemaCon back in April. In fact, the movie works on so many other levels besides the racing scenes, one of the reasons why I wanted to spend a bit more time thinking about it before writing about it.  I never got around to seeing the doc The 24 Hour War, co-directed by Adam Carolla, but it’s a doc that tells the same story using archival footage, something I only realized existed after seeing James Mangold’s film. Fortunately, Mangold has given me enough faith and confidence in his work as a filmmaker that I knew his dramatization would find a way to tell the same story in an equally exciting way, and I was correct.
We meet Christian Bale’s Ken Miles, a cranky British race car driver who doesn’t play by the rules, at an important qualifying race where his car has just been eliminated from racing by officials. Matt Damon’s fellow racer Carroll Shelby offers to placate the angry Miles and gets a wrench thrown at him for his efforts. A year or so later, Miles is running his own car repair shop but having serious money issues. The next time Shelby approaches him, it’s to offer him money to help him design a sportscar for the Ford company to race at Le Mans in 1963, a grueling 24-hour race. Unbeknownst to either of them, Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) had sent his best man Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) to Italy to negotiate a deal with Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone) to buy his company so that Ford could get into the sportscar business. That meeting doesn’t end well, and Ferrari’s insults as he sells to another company gets Ford in the type of vengeful mood that could only lead to great innovation. It’s up to Shelby and Miles to work together to design a car that can beat the Ferrari company’s Le Mans winning streak. Although the reason for Miles and Shelby designing this super-car for Ford is primarily for money reasons, it’s just as much about pride and patriotism.  Miles clearly has more to prove as a race car driver who has fallen on hard times.
Tumblr media
That’s the set-up, which leads to an exhilarating 2 and a half hours that flies by faster than you might ever expect, and it’s not all racing either. Unlike other movies of this length, the set-up is just as compelling as the actual Le Mans race, and that’s mainly due to the great cast assembled around Bale and Damon.  Very early on in the film, the screenplay – written by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth and Jason Keller – sets up the relationships with Miles’ relationship with his wife (Caitrione Balfe) and son Peter (Noah Jupe), being just as important in telling what is essentially Miles’ story.  As good as Damon is, as always, Bale’s performance as Miles, complete with a constant scowl on his face, is very much what keeps the movie interesting, because there are far more stakes in him winning Le Mans than for Shelby or even Ford. It’s to Bale’s great credit that he is able to make such a cantankerous and frequently unpleasant character as likable as the characteristic charm Damon brings to Shelby.
The movie is based on a true story, so you may already guess how it turns out, but the last hour when it becomes about Miles and Shelby having to fight back against edicts from the Ford Company, in the form of Josh Lucas’ Leo Beebe, Ford’s right hand man.  It’s another interesting level to the film that’s very relevant in terms of people having to fight against the dominance of the corporations. That might be especially ironic when you realize that the corporation releasing this (Fox) was recently bought by an even bigger corporation (Disney), something that’s hard to ignore.
Tumblr media
Sure, there’s a ton of machismo in this movie, and it’s a little disturbing that Ford vs. Ferrarijoins the long list of films this year that has failed to “read the room” and all the calls for diversity, since it’s about as much a white man’s story as you can possibly get. That said, it’s not often when I watch a movie where there’s only one prominent female role with an actor I don’t know or have never heard of her. That’s the case with Balfe, and she completely blew me away, playing so well off of Bale with most of her scenes being on the domestic side of things. Noah Jupe is also really great in Shia Labeouf’s Honey Boy(currently in select cities), and he also is given such a wonderful story arc in his relationship with his father.
It might be somewhat obvious by now, but James Mangold is one of the most underrated and underappreciated directors working today, mainly since he rarely remains in the same genre for more than one movie. Even when he did The Wolverine and Logan back-to-back with Hugh Jackman as the title character (of both movies, oddly), they were very different films. As much as Ford vs. Ferrari blew me away in terms of the filming, editing and sound design used to create the Le Mans racing scenes, the domestic side of Miles’ life keeps you just as riveted to the screen.
Ford V Ferrari is not only one of the best movies of the year, but possibly the best movie of Mangold’s brilliant career. It’s a movie I know I’ll be able to watch over and over, if only to marvel at the sheer quality of all aspects of its filmmaking. I already have tickets to rewatch it in IMAX this Friday.
Rating: 9.5/10

Life Line. - Prologue
Tumblr media
Erick x Reader!!Kicking Boxing AU
pairing - Erik Stevens x reader
genre -  Angst
words -
summary-  Erick is facing many demons created by his father and himself. In the midst of the madness. Even though you are damaged and have a million problems of your own you were the only distraction he couldn't afford to lose.
A/N - Its 2 A.M and I cant sleep thinking about Infinite War ..I thought I would destress by starting a complicated series...enjoy!!!
“Okay (Y/N) Let's do the 4 counts 8 times. Power Drill to warm yourself up” Your trainer Tommy announced to you as he entered the ring. He seemed pissed but really when was he never angry at someone.
“Rough weekend?” You asked as you got into position. Fists balled up in front of your body ready to throw at his hands.
“I told you not ask me questions about my life (Y/N)!” His Brooklyn accent come out stronger than ever when he was mad. You smiled at yourself knowing he would spill in a minute or two. He couldn't contain himself from speaking ill about others. He had called his best friend Henry every word in the book. That just made you wonder what he says about you to others.
“(Y/N) quick Jab!” sending your right fist to his open palm you pushed with your whole body. Rocky mistake.
“Come on Enzo Is that what you serving me right now. I thought you were my best student?” You felt rage boil from the pit of your stomach at the nickname.
“Don't call me that.” You didn't even open your teeth.
“Then start punching like (Y/N) and not like Enzo.” You hated that he would use your weakness against you but it seemed to work as you started to pick up the pace of your punches to warm up.
You didn't trust a lot of people. Your Mother, brother, Tommy and Casie, your best friend were the only people you trusted. Enzo was one of them but he showed his true colors in your most vulnerable state. He was supposed to there but he wasn't and you blame yourself that you still let him affect you. Just a mention of his name gets your hearts beating and adrenaline running. He was your weakness and even now he is.
You were drenched in sweat in 2 hours of training with Tommy. From the ring to skipping rope he was really pushing you today. He had eventually told you what had put him in the bad mood from early on.
“Fucking Jimin didn't invite me to his wedding. Can you believe it? I mean I raised that kid? My blood sweat and tears. I took him off the streets from selling Dope and getting into danger, from some really bad guys. Don't get me wrong, helping people is in my DNA but I feel like I would like something back. Like Hey Tommy This is for you for saving me from the fire of life. Am the victim here”
You weren't really listening as you continued to throw heated punches at the red punching bag he was holding for you. All you could see was red and Enzo face. Enzo’s smooth face. Tan with black hair falling on his forehead just like when he used to wake up next to you in bed.
“Woah Woah (Y/N) stop. You trana break the bag?” His Eyebrows were near his receding hair. The man was shocked at your rage and power.
“You really need to calm down or see a shrink about your temper.” You honestly didn't notice your behavior; your mind was just thinking about Enzo and everything he had done to you. He was gone yet he still had power over you. Slow breaths and a tap from Tommy on your back calmed you downed.
“Drink this and sit down!” That was an order, one that you would have followed if you went distracted by the strange deep voice.
 “Aay.....Are you Tommy?”
Just his voice alone commode attention. At Least 4 other trainers look around to spot him including you.
I was nervous but confident at the same time a skill I had perfected over the years.
Moving from Oakland to New York was difficult for me but I understood why I needed it. I tried to see the silver lining in everything in my life now. Sure, my apartment sucked and My job was sucking the soul out of my body but I needed a fresh start. My father’s complicated past was too much, I needed a break maybe even pursue some interest I like.
“Are you sure this is the place?” I asked a close friend on the phone.
“Yeah At the corner just like I told you dawg.”
“Okay then see you later then man.”
Stepping into the building it looked like a real Gym, one with a lot of history.
The first thing I noticed was a girl really going hard at the bag. Her hair tied up in a pony and sweaty body, her form was strong I could tell she was taught. She was filled with anger anyone could tell that easy but her punches were still strong and centered. Some guy stopped her and gave her some water and a towel ...that must be Tommy the trainer.
“Aay.....Are you Tommy?”
“Who’s asking?”  It's been sometime since I’ve heard a Brooklyn accent. Not like in the movies but pretty cool to say the least.
“Am Erik...Erik Stevens. I came for Tommy to train.” No matter how hard I tried to keep my eye on Tommy I felt the Girl eyeing me from the side. Like a beaming heat at the side of my neck and head.
“Okay Talk to Becky my assistant, she's at the back she'll show you how everything works around here. Meet me in the ring in 20 minutes. ” Without warning he left. I guess it's a New York thing
*Sniff sniff sniff*
I turned to see the Punching bag girl sneezing like crazy. Maybe she has allergies? I don't Know.
I took out a Kleenex form my backpack and handed her one. She took it thanking me softly.
“Do you smoke?” She asked.
“Yeah a bit why?”
She stood up letting me see her face for the first time. She was beautiful. Skin had a smooth dark bronze finish, long lashes and thick lips. Her body was breathtaking and eyes brown just like mine.

Note
I know certain parts of the fandom joke a lot about Mikhail but this is also the show where the two guys that got possessed by the Mind Flayer and tortured our main characters for an entire season are connected by the same first name (Will in s2 -> Billy in s3, Billy/Willy in s4, like it's way too on the nose, y'know?) and it's also interesting to note that a Mikhail starts to get mentioned in the seasons where Mike's pov get taken away from us ("Did Mikhail send you?" in s3 to Joyce and Hopper -> Mikhail the son in the Russia plot in s4). I know the fandom make jokes about it but why are we dismissing it? If Will/Billy are connected why do we not think that Mike/Mikhail might be connected too somehow?
Mikhail was definitely just a way for them to say Mike and speak in code. It's not even hidden the way it is for Billy's name. Mikhail is straight up Michael. And it's not even just that. It's the fact they name irrelevant russian side characters Mikhail - Characters that didn't even need identification. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS!
The context of both are SO strange too
Enzo's name isn't even Enzo's real name. It's Dimitri. Enzo's name means the same as Henry's name. It's an italian variation of Henry
Hopper tells him Mikhail isn't his son because he's smart unlike Enzo.
Karen tells Nancy she must've been swapped at the hospital because she's a fighter unlike her.
But! Also! He says this in the same season Mike isn't himself. He's a shitty rip-off. This just adds to that list.
"Did Mikhail send for you?"
Reminds me when Mike talks about Hopper, Joyce and Dustin (who are all involved in the Russian plot):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and lucas says... this
Tumblr media
and they accept it doesn't matter.
THEN WHY WRITE IT? WHY INCLUDE IT? if a character (especially characters like joyce, mike, nancy, hopper, etc) says something can't be a coincidence, when are they ever actually wrong?? literally nancy says it in the next episode and she was right. why is it that this time when Mike suggests something's wrong it's met with "it doesn't matter" and they just accept it (because this is the do not listen to mike "the key" wheeler season)? this is the only time they deny something's relevance and it just. never comes back for some reason. so again i ask, why write it?
and also kinda not related but the fact Hopper pulls out the fucking sword from Conan the Barbarian.. Just like. Casually. wonder where we saw that earlier in the season...
Tumblr media
I don't know the exact word for that but um. Yeah that's not right. that literally ruins the immersion. It gets confusing for no reason. people talk about what if Hopper gave Mike the sword he used next season and I'm like... that's sweet but... mike's gonna be confused as shit 😭 Mike also has a bunch of other things in his room that season that foreshadow everything else that season.
So something is up with the russia plot for sure and it's tied to Mike. Mikhail is extremely important. I don't think he'll be an actual physical character we meet. It's just that he's a stand in for Mike, that's what I think. But the reason why nobody connects it outside of ships and just dismisses it? the reason starts with the letter m and ends with e

Alternate history of motoring - 1st part (1950-55) via /r/cars
Alternate history of motoring - 1st part (1950-55)
Decided to write and post this, starting a little series. It would come in 5-year installements (so the next one will be 1956-60) once a week or so.
1950:
Americas:
Most of the year went as in our timeline.
However, the start of the Korean War in September brought change. Customers, fearing more rationing, started slightly turning towards smaller import cars. While the usual fullsizes strongly remained king, cars like the VW Beetle or Morris Minor gained noticeable ground in the early '51 model year.
Seeing that, the US makers started seeking solutions.
By late November of 1950, GM and Ford already started their work. The Ford Anglia, Consul and Zephyr, as well as the Holden 48-215 and Opel Olympia, got federalized and opened to decent sales for the Holden, Consul and Zephyr, and somewhat weaker for the Opel and Anglia. Still, by the end of the year, it' was decided that the next generations of them would be developed with at least a partial focus on the US market.
In the same vein, the sales of the Henry J rose, though not to British/Australian car levels.
However, Chrysler and the independent makes were faced with trouble, not having such overseas divisions to import cars from. The only exception was Nash, which was already working on the American, a compact car.
Chrysler decided to work around the problem by investing in diesel engines. The plan involved rolling out 3 diesels, a 100 HP 241 ci Hemi V8 (Plymouth, Dodge), a 115 HP 276 ci Hemi V8 (DeSoto), a 135 HP 331 ci Hemi V8 (Chrysler) and a 160 HP 405 ci Hemi V8 (large pickups). The engines were planned to be ready by 1952, shortly after the gas Hemis. A compact car was also in development, but on the back burner.
Meanwhile, Studebaker, Packard, Hudson, Kaiser and Willys merged into United Auto Manufacturing (UAM), in order to survive the competition. They started working on a new, unibody compact to fight the Consul, Zodiac and Holden. They decided to pull off a large gamble by hiring W.E. Deming, the statistician behind the concept of reliability as the main manufacturing axiom, and paying him more than the Japanese offered. (Yes, it means not-so-reliable Japanese cars.) The rationale was that if the UAM can't fight on prices, they would fight on quality.
Europe:
Most automakers were scrambling to make a car for the developed market. While many companies had different approaches, all the vehicles are quite similar - 1000-1300 cc of cubic capacity, 4-door sedan unibody (with some other body options), compact size.
However, many companies approach it differently - for example, Citroen was making the Ami a flat-4 FWD car, the Saab 93 was going to be a 2-stroke FWD machine, while the VW Type 3 was going to have a Beetle-derived rear flat-4 transaxle, notably, with an optional diesel.
The list of makers in that idea included Ford, Opel, Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, Simca, VW, NSU, DKW, BMW, Saab, Volvo, Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Austin, Hillman, Standard and others.
Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo revolutionized the performance world by making the Alfetta, a mid-engined performance coupe with a 235 HP 2.0 V6 supercharged engine in the middle. The car was the world's fastest, and achieved notable victories in performance. Other makers, like Jaguar or Aston Martin, started developing similar ones.
Behind the Iron Curtain, the engineers of GAZ in the USSR started working on a relatively affordable, 600 cc small car, with the intent of it being cheap enough for most Soviet car owners.
Asia:
In Japan, the first kei cars, a class of cars limited to 200 cc and 280x120x130 cm, started being produced. Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and Suzuki all entered the class.
China started designing a similar sort of car, but larger and 300cc. While it was called a "people's car", the engineers slowly started seeing this goal as impossible, due to the Chinese society being seemingly too poor for that.
1951:
Americas:
As the war went on, (sub)compacts and imports retained their popularity, which was showed by the fact that Holden, Opels, Fords, VWs and Morrises all received new styling for 1952, as per US custom, and the ongoing projects kept running.
However, seeing the new Alfa's fame, UAM decided to start working on a similar supercar. This was part of a larger development project, involving the development of a new range of fullsize cars - and the supercar was meant to have a similar suspension setup and V8 engine to the new Packards.
But what shook the US auto industry were "Deming system" 1952 UAM cars, which were of better quality than their competitors, though it was offset by a higher price. While the original sales were just OK, an ad campaign and word of mouth helped them. These cars got especially popular in rural areas, where customers wanted simple, reliable cars.
Mopar's new gasoline Hemi V8s were also a good development for the company, burning less fuel than the competors, while having better performance.
Europe:
The new midsize cars, like the Opel Kadett, BMW 1200, Standard 10 or Austin A50 started appearing, with more coming and decent perspectives on the US market.
However, many of the automakers ended up spending a lot on them, and had trouble recouping the costs or continuing development - this especially touched small brands, like BMW, Borgward or Hotchkiss. Also, the sales figures were worse than expected.
What actually sold well, though, was the Citroen 2CV van - a cheap, reliable vehicle that could haul a family. Citroen quickly found itself doing well, and even started exporting to the US, with quite limited success, and other companies started looking at their business model more closely.
Another revolution were the redesigned Opels, Fords, VWs and Morrises - the practice started bringing image-conscious customers towards these brands, and made others think about new '53 styling.
Also, as Hotchkiss started merger talks with UAM, the French goverment started working on its own Jeep-like vehicle, produced by Renault. The Hotchkiss Jeep was something they didn't want made by another country's company.
Behind the Iron Curtain, the USSR temporarily abandoned its economy car project to focus on defense.
Asia:
China took a similar approach to the USSR - abandoned the "people's car" project to focus on defense.
However, the kei car segment was booming - most manufacturers had at least one of these 150 cc cars, and smaller brands started feeling the competition from ones like Toyota, Hino or Nissan.
1952:
Americas:
Faced with rising unionism, UAM began looking into outsourcing production. Finally, in June, they started working on a new investment - a "Deming system" factory in Tijuana, Mexico, in order to bring better quality than the Big Three at lower prices. The factory was meant to produce compacts and subcompacts by Willys, Studebaker and Hotchkiss.
The 1953 model year brought a lot of new stuff.
For one, GM, Ford and UAM all had all-new compacts - the 1953 Holden line, with independent suspension (except for the ute), the FWD Ford Taunus and the Deming system Willys Aero/Studebaker Lark. They ended up selling like hotcakes, stealing buyers from cheaper fullsize models.
Also, Mopar debuted all-new car designs and Hemi V8 diesels. The cars themselves caught on, and the diesels weren't doing bad either, although they were limited to buyers who did not care about the rough operation of these machines.
However, on 28th November 1952, the market suffered a huge downturn. The reason?
Well, President Dewey authorized an atomic attack on Pyongyang. The world stood in shock, and the attack is often seen as the cause of Joseph Stalin's 7th December 1952 fatal heart attack. Car sales quickly fell, and makers lowered R&D expenses to almost zero.
Europe:
More midsize family cars were hitting the showroom floors, and smaller makers found themselves in trouble. Hotchkiss was bought by UAM and BMW went to Mercedes-Benz.
Citroen could have suffered the same fate, but 2CV and HY orders were coming in quickly. Seeing that, other brands also started working on their own economy cars and vans.
The French government, with Hotchkiss now being an US-owned maker, accelerated its work on a "light troop carrier". It was meant to be a Renault 4CV-based light amphibious vehicle, and its similarity to the Schwimmwagen led many to calling it "Le Schwimmwagenoix". It had a lot to do with Ferdinand Porsche working on it, following his late father's design work for Renault.
On the sports car front, Mercedes-Benz and Lancia joined the fight against the Alfetta. The new 320RS and Stelvio were seen as great performance cars, and the Stelvio was exceptionally good, thanks to being engineered by Lancia's new recruit, Enzo Ferrari.
Behind the Iron Curtain, the idea of a "car of the people" appeared in the form of the AWZ P70, a low-power, partially wooden, yet practical FWD minibus. The Western press even showed it as an example of a good car for so little money.
Of course, the atomic bombing of Pyongyang made things... somewhat worse on the economic front.
Asia:
After the Japanese government gave significant incentives for company mergers, they started quickly happening. In fact, by the end of the year, only Toyota, Nissan, Isuzu, Suzuki and Hino were left on the scene.
India started working on its "national car" program. It was meant to be conducted by Hindustan's factory, and the car design was strongly inspired by the new AWZ - and even the Pyongyang attack didn't stop them.
1953:
Global politics:
On 4th January, 1953,the USSR joined the Korean War by dropping a nuclear bomb on Seoul. This started the nuclear war stage of the conflict, with both sides using them.
However, both countries’ leaders knew what dropping a bomb on the rival’s territory would mean and kept the attacks to Korean soil. Nevertheless, further economic stagnation ensued.
What’s more, on 26th February, the Iranian prime minister, Mohammed Mossadegh, would nationalise the country’s oil, shaking the market. The US feared that for some time, but was too tied in Korea to stop him.
Egypt, Jordan and Syria dealt another blow to the oil market with a joint operation to capture the Suez Channel in March, making it harder to export oil. When it comes to producing the black stuff, May’s Arab power struggles after King Ibn Saud’s death did not help. The country went through a 7-month-long civil war, ending with the victory of his son Turki, the continuator of the dynasty.
This also let to the European NATO's near-downfall - the USSR threatened to cut oil supply to any NATO member. The only country to stay was Germany, supported by the US when it came to oil.
24th November brought the start of the peace movenent. A demonstration against the war and related draft in New York turned into a brawl with the police and an ostentatious burning of draft cards. Similar events happened in LA (7th December) and San Francisco (19th December).
Americas:
1953 had some of the worst sales for years, and model year 1954 had the worst opening in years. Still, new car designs were significantly different, in order to draw customers.
It also had compacts and subcompacts gaining even more ground, with Holden even outselling Chevy's debut (that said, Chevy's designs were rather old by the point). This made GM decide to start making Holdens in Van Nuys, and the Ford Taunus also got US manufacturing by the end of the year.
Chrysler's new compacts, the Plymouth Lancer (Chrysler in Australia) and Dodge Coronet, as well as the company's diesels, including a new I6 one, and the purchase of Borgward gave it a well-needed boost.
The compact commercial vehicle segment also shone, with Holden's Half-Ton Ute, Ford 's Transit and VW Transporter fighting for domination.
Nash's compacts were buying it some time, together with redesigned fullsizes.
Seeing that, GM and Ford started independently developing "senior compacts" - cars that would slot between compacts and fullsizes.
Also, imports were making huge inroads in the US. Not only were Holdens, Opels, Fords of Germany , Hotchkisses and Borgwards (though the first had "gone native") sold through Big Four dealers, VWs, Saabs, Morrises, DKWs, etc. were selling better than ever.
Despite the push for economy, a GM dealer from New Orleans, Mike Persia, fitted a Holden Deluxe coupe with Oldsmobile mechanical parts and widened wheelarches, as well as stripping the interior. The car was raced in NASCAR, and achieved great victories there, with Mr. Persia finally selling the design of the Holden TSC (Track Special Coupe) to GM.
In the same year, after the Brazilian president's appeal, Ford and Chrysler pledged to biild factories there, while GM decided to build one in Chile.
Europe:
As in America, the market had a slump, yet the cars were greatly restyled to attract customers to them.
Germany's decision to stay in NATO led to gasoline having to be rationed, which had a bad effect on the German luxury car market. While Mercedes-Benz and BMW survived, Borgward was bought by Chrysler and Ferdinand Porsche sold his company to work for Citroen.
VW, meanwhile, scored a hit with the diesel-optioned Type 3,a Beetle-based, contemporary-styled 4-door sedan.
Meanwhile, the center of luxury was moving to France, with the new Delahaye 400,boasting of a 4.0 V12 and Citroen-licensed hydropneumatic suspension, was launched. It was the fastest luxury car of the time.
Also, Bugatti built the Type 302, a 4.5 V12 mid-engined supercar - the world's fastest, reaching 270 km/h and winning the 1953 LeMans.
This overshadowed Jaguar's new, mid-engined XK170. What's worse, the Jag went through engine trouble during LeMans.
France also completed its new, Renault-based light military vehicle - an amphibious one. However, many experts deemed such things irrelevant in the era of the atomic bomb.
Competitors to the Citroën 2CV in the form of the Ford Brompton (UK) and Harz (Germany), small, yet 4-door FWD vehicles that sold quite well.
The Portugese government decided to start a "national car" program to lower the country's foreign dependence.
Poland also decided to work on such a thing, starting to test microcar prototypes.
Asia:
Japan's car industry kept on developing, with the new Toyota Crown, a contemporary-styled large sedan and rebodied Austin A70, seen as a reach beyond cheap kei cars. Still, the quality was what you could expect from an underdeveloped country.
The Japanese makers started looking towards expansion - Toyota began estabilishing an assembly in Taiwan, and Isuzu had sights set on the French Indochina.
Despite droughts weakening the economy, the Indian national car project kept on continuing.
1954:
Politics:
The Korean War continued, despite protests all across the US.
Its continuing was helped by the fact that many African-Americans enlisted, hoping to use it for societal ascent. The viewpoint was reinforced by the GI Bill being extended to all servicepeople.
While the US had the military upper hand, it was having funding problems, due to many politicians opposing further funding for it, sometimes for racially-charged reasons.
In Europe, the Suez Coalition (Egypt, Jordan, Syria) restarted the sale of oil in March, and a month later, Iran did the same thing.
Noticing their dependence on the Arab nations, European nations started diplomatic efforts to bring about the Euro-Arabian Oil Commonwealth, similar to the already existing one for coal and steel.
Also, France and South Vietnamese forces won the battle of Dien Bien Phu, stopping the Vietcong, and started preparing an offensive.
Americas:
1954 brought an end to the fuel crisis and saw a start to a scrappage scheme, meant to give the army more steel and help the car market, as well as the GI Bill extended to car buying and loans.
The biggest winners were compacts and subcompacts, cheap enough not to require a large investment besides the scrappage money. UAM, with its cheap Mexican manufacturing, and GM’s leasing benefited the most.
Sales were also boosted by all of the Big Four rolling out new, striking fullsize designs for all brands, from Chevrolet to Packard (unibody at Ford and UAM), new GM, Ford and UAM V8s, UAM’s torsion beam suspension, as well as Nash abandoning the segment to focus on compacts and imported Peugeot subcompacts.
That year is also seen as “the American performance car’s birthdate” - Packard rolled out the Talladega, a supercharged V8 supercar that debuted in the 1954 LeMans, and Holden started making the ASC with some roadworthiness changes.
Cadillac began the development of the Eldorado, a sporty 4-door sedan/convertible to fight the new Delahaye.
Opel was removed from the US market, and the Kadett and Olympia models were transferred to Holden, and added to their Australian offerings.
Seeing how the Deming process was kept at a lower cost by Mexican manufacturing at UAM, the rest of the Big Four started working on their own Mexican assemblies.
Europe:
The Citroen 13CV, a groundbreaking luxury car, was released. Not only it had hydropneumatic systems all around, it had striking fastback bodywork with an opening rear window and a drivetrain tuned by Ferdinand Porsche and Maserati brothers. It was meant to be a prelude for the upcoming 6CV, 9CV and 16CV.
At the same time, Delahaye began work on the 2500, a smaller luxury car and a 13CV rival.
The British government instituted an antitrust law, which stopped the planned merger of Morris and Austin. However, these companies made their own mergers - Morris with Lanchester and Daimler, and Austin with Rover. Austin-Rover began adopting the Deming system.
Still, their joint project, a 3-wheeled sub-Minor/A30 economy car, the Mini/A10, hit the market. Unfortunately for them, it was overshadowed by the Hillman Imp, an Alec Issigonis-designed FWD small car with surprisingly good handling.
Jaguar, following financial troubles, went bankrupt, which was a surprise for the performance car world.
Mercedes-Benz, with the new Delahaye, Packard and Bugatti on the market, as well as the Eldorado and 16CV in development, started working on the 400S and 400RS - “new standards in luxury”.
Meanwhile, BMW, their subsidiary, started making a licensed version of the new Fiat 500 - a decision that helped the company’s finances a lot. The Fiat itself also was a success in its native Italy.
The 1954 LeMans was the spot of fierce competition between the new Alfa Romeo Alfetta, Packard Talladega, Lancia Stelvio and Mercedes 320RS. However, the winner was unlikely - it was the Lotus 6, a lightweight mid-engined race car using tuned Jaguar XK120 mechanicals. After the race, Colin Chapman was approached with orders for a road-going version, and by the end of the year, there was one.
Behind the big companies was TVR with its 2000, built in a similar way with Bristol parts, yet not as refined. Still, TVR ended up in a similar situation, and by the end of the year, there was a production 2000.
Asia:
India’s new “national car”, the AWZ-derived Hindustan Premier, ended up being quite successful. Still, it did not motorize the largely-undeveloped country, as its cost was still relatively high.
Meanwhile, Japanese manufacturers Toyota and Nissan developed the Land Cruiser Series 30 and Nissan Patrol, two Land Rover-derived 4x4s. They were quite unrefined, yet successful in developing markets, thanks to the low prices.
1955:
Politics:
The war continued to draw ire, now on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Also, it was so damaging and costly that the participants wanted to end it.
In July, the American scrappage scheme ended and finally, on 27th October, the Tokyo Agreement between 5 leaders, Thomas Dewey, Lavrientiy Beria, Mao Zedong, Kim Il-Sung and Syngman Rhee ended the war and drew the border on the 37th parallel north.
By that time, the Franco-Vietnamese anti-Vietcong offense was already ongoing, with good results for the South.
Americas
Good car sales continued. While the end of scrappage slowed down cheap car sales, the rest of the market made up for that.
UAM showed some new things that changed the US car scene. The first was the '56 "Low Step" series of Studebaker pickup trucks, which used a less bulky frame design to give more space, also offering typical UAM quality, as well as good-value Mexican production. '56's UAM design also showed their new diesels, from Hotchkiss 4-bangers to Hudson/Kaiser V8s, which gave Mopars a run for their money.
Chrysler was falling into financial troubles, as they couldn't get enough sales during the scrappage scene, as Borgwards were relatively expensive, and their cars were showing reliability problems.
GM and Ford's new intermediate vehicles, the RWD Holden Superior (AU-only)/Chevrolet Chevelle/Pontiac LeMans/Oldsmobile 76/78/Buick Special and the FWD Ford Fairbank/Mercury Comet, were also hits, well-slotting between the compacts and fullsizes, offering both I6s and V8s.
Meanwhile, the Holden ASC got a more "civilian" version, the Sport Coupe, with an SBC 281 ci V8, and competitors for either - the Studebaker Sport Lark/Super Lark, with a normal Studebaker V8 and a 374 ci Packard one, respectively.
Also, GM began working on a cheaper, more mass-market alternative to the Packard Talladega, the Corvette, and Ford's Thunderbird was meant to be the same.
This year also had the first Japanese car stateside, the Toyotas: 200, Crown and Land Cruiser. However, all were derided for a lack of refinement, with very few sold in that only year of sales.
Europe:
Diesels kept gaining ground, with Borgward, BMW, Volvo, Peugeot, Citroen (Ami, 6CV, 9CV) and both Austin and Morris Group cars getting them. By then, not only fleet customers were getting such cars - they were getting more and more common on the average driveway.
In the UK, Austin-Rover and Morris were taking two different routes - AR began improving their quality, while also making the '56 designs appealing and introducing the Rover P5, while Morris risked large loans for making new car designs for Lanchester and Daimler, neglecting the 1956s. Rootes Group bought Standard-Triumph.
In Germany, the VW Type 3 was challenged by the new Opel Kadett. Meanwhile, both brands started working on sports csrs using these two's mechanicals.
Citroen revealed the 6CV and 9CV, looking much like the 13CV, but with less complex styling and mechanicals, while work on the 16CV and the range-topping GT continued, with the Porsche-Maserati team leading them.
In Italy, the new Fiat 600 had its premiere, attracting many 600 buyers. On the opposite end of the scale, the 2nd gen Lancia Stelvio surfaced, with a 4.7 V12. It was the fastest car in the world.
However, LeMans had another Lotus victory on the track, showing that the Six wasn't a one-hit wonder. Lotus was working on its own, non-Jaguar engine.
In Poland, the new microcar, Mikrus, debuted as a small 4-door sedan, and was directed to production. The USSR restarted its national car program after the war.
Asia
China resumed its national car program, as defense was no longer as prioritized, and a symbol of the Great Leap Forward was needed.
Meanwhile, in Japan, the economy was growing, and another company expanded - the Dutch colonies had a Hino factory set up, and Suzuki, now talking Citroen 2CV licensing, took its chances in post-nuclear-war Korea, or what was left of it in the south.
That is all for now. Hope you enjoy.

Alfa Romeo Giulia is the 2018 Motor Trend Car of the Year
It’s become de rigueur to declare driving dead. If we are headed for autonomous transport, ask the pundits, why bother having fun behind the wheel? Just clamber into your soulless people hauler, select “Stultifying Ambient Tedium” on your Pandora playlist, and tune out.
At Motor Trend, dear reader, we are not ready to give up the fight even if the morning commute is more slog than slalom, more torture than torque. We contend that a schlep through shoreline traffic should not extinguish individuality.
Driving great distances because you can is a deep-rooted American tradition. It is the declaration of independence of the industrial revolution. It is our automotive destiny. We embrace the decreasing-radius corner, the back road’s unexpected undulation, the hairpin with a dusting of gravel at the apex.
At a time when the formulaic commoditization of cars is not only expected but also a standard feature, we rebel. We are not ready to relegate our cars to the status quo of an A-to-B anachronism of conveyance. We believe in the necessity of passion and finding your heart’s desire. There is still time—time to instill joy, lust, rivalry, and good cheer.
For those who won’t settle for ubiquity, we present the 2018 Motor Trend Car of the Year: the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
No less a luminary than Henry Ford, the inventor of the mass-production automobile, once said: “When I see an Alfa Romeo go by, I tip my hat.”
Mr. Ford knew there was something special about the car that carries the cross-and-serpent badge, the company where Enzo Ferrari proudly got his start in racing before hanging his own shingle.
Our international bureau chief, Angus MacKenzie, an axle-greased eminence of the auto industry, knows his Alfa history. In his London garage sits a 1967 GTV coupe—a rolling symbol of Alfa Romeo’s glory years. “Back in the early ’60s, Alfa occupied a niche that BMW later came to own—building fast, charismatic sedans, wagons, and coupes that looked good, weren’t stupidly expensive, and, most of all, were utterly delightful to drive,” he says. “This new Giulia recaptures the spirit of those 1960s Alfas but in a thoroughly modern manner.”
Anyone reading Motor Trend this past year shouldn’t be surprised. Each successive time we drove the Giulia, through summer’s ripening breath, our enthusiasm grew.
Alfa Romeo’s erratic legacy in this country might mean many Americans have limited knowledge of this brand and heritage. Consider the Giulia your introduction.
“There is sorcery in this car,” road test editor Chris Walton says. “The Giulia fills the space vacated by BMW. Yet even at the apex of its reign, a 3 Series never rode this well or cornered with such poise and precision simultaneously.”
When seeing the strength of the 2018 COTY field, some readers might feel our choice of the Alfa Romeo seems out of left field. The Honda Accord, Kia Stinger, and Tesla Model 3 all make strong plays for top honors (and received individual first-place votes among our judging panel).
But Alfa Romeo is dashing away with the prize—the first time an Italian brand has won COTY or our discontinued Import Car of the Year—and anyone who has been reading Motor Trend this past year shouldn’t be surprised.
Earlier this year, the base Giulia beat all comers in our Big Test of 2.0-liter compact luxury sedans—a field that included Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, among others.
The Quadrifoglio version then eviscerated its rival BMW M3, Cadillac ATS-V, and Mercedes C63 S super sedan entrants in a four-way comparison on streets and at the racetrack.
And in Best Driver’s Car against 11 supercars, sports cars, and six-figure grand tourers, the Quadrifoglio (the lone sedan) finished in a respectable sixth.
Each successive time we drove the Giulia, through summer’s ripening breath, our enthusiasm grew.
“Best steering, best chassis—this car saves the sport sedan market,” says guest judge Chris Theodore—the former Ford and Chrysler product development executive who knows something about creating cars to make a soul ache.
“It was the only car that said, ‘You’re in charge. You want to be nice and tidy, I can be tidy. You want to be crazy and drift me wild, I’ll be right there with you,’” Theodore adds. “You fall in love with it.”
The top-trim Quadrifoglio, with its 505 fiery-footed steeds underhood, is blisteringly quick, especially in Race mode. Its 2.9-liter V-6 is a Ferrari engine with two cylinders cleaved off, for crying out loud. While punching out a 3.8-second 0–60 time and a 12.1-second quarter mile, this pazzo Alfa also carries asphalt-peeling lateral grip. Yet the car’s attitude can be adjusted on the throttle at will. In short, it goads expletive-shouting misbehavior while delivering a commute-friendly ride.
What clinched the Calipers was the base Giulia. Many brands make blazingly fast performance sedans, but when the exercise is reduced by mass-market pressures, the lesser version is often found lacking. Not so here. The $38,990 base Giulia achieves something Acura, Lexus, Infiniti, and Jaguar have tried futilely to do for decades: build a better compact sport sedan than the Deutschlanders.
The Giulia’s eager 2.0-liter turbo-four is no wisp of an engine. It cranks out a stunning yet tractable 280 hp and 306 lb-ft of torque. In testing, we admit to finding a hint of lag and lash, but when the powerband kicks in to second gear and the exhaust note awakens, your senses will revel in jubilation.
“This is a car that snorts and burps and gurgles,” Detroit editor Alisa Priddle says. “There is something visceral about hearing the car. There’s sheer fun in driving a car like that.”
Call it Italian finesse; Alfa understands the nuance that some drivers might desire, a racy engine response without turning the suspension into a kidney-beating nightmare—hence the option of a softer suspension setting while in Dynamic mode. Markus observed that some twisty roads benefit a car with a softer shock setting. Adds Ed Loh: “The Germans always say, ‘We make everything hard.’ No! Softness. Softness.”
Putting the power to the pavement is a proven ZF eight-speed with 100-millisecond shift times and the ability to skip-shift from eighth gear directly to second if instant hp is needed. If you are stuck in the typical morning snarl, a switch to “A” mode changes the shift logic to smooth and calm. So what if we Americans don’t get a manual version? One toggle of the cold, all-aluminum paddle shifters will make you cease yearning to row your own gears. The Brembo brakes, normally a sure thing, and brake-by-wire system earned some frowns for being mushy under pressure, though.
“It handles absolutely beautifully, with light, linear sports car–like steering,” features editor Christian Seabaugh says. “It rides like a luxury car with no impact harshness in the cabin, and it’s downright quick. This is a car that puts a smile on your face. It doesn’t matter whether you’re sitting at a stop light, bombing down a back road, or cruising on the highway. It just wants to please.”
Many luxury sedans have imitated the stark Germanic style. But Alfa retained its legacy of what an Italian car’s exterior and interior should look like. It is unmistakable and sensual, imbuing a cosmopolitan glamour to the driver.
“The design, packaging, and various visual elements seem to come together to complement each other,” former Chrysler design boss Tom Gale says, pointing to the shield grille, shrouded instrument cluster, and ’60s-inspired wood inlays as iconic Alfa styling points.
Alfa Romeo could have taken the cheap way out, relying on tacked-on pieces of faux heritage. But no, the whole car is heritage—swoopy, sexy, and more than a little brazen. The smooth detents of the buttons, the rheostatic clicks of the dials, and the swing of the stalks all carry a tactile elegance. The italic typeface on the instrument gauges connotes velocity. The back seats, though a tad tight on legroom, are draped in the same sumptuous leather as those up front.
This snazzy aesthetic travels into places most people won’t see (but Theodore did), such as the attention to detail in the chassis design—with stout spring perches, strut-tower braces, and shrouding of the cooling system.
Now let’s talk value. This segment is cutthroat, and Alfa has not flinched at what is expected. After following the industry-standard 36-month, $399/month lease deal, it launched a 24-month, $299/month lease deal that should get the attention of any individual with Maserati tastes but a Mazda budget.
Carrying such a gutsy engine could tank fuel economy. But the Alfa is a miser. The rear-drive version of the 2.0-liter Giulia delivers 21.7/37.9/26.8 mpg city/highway/combined in our Real MPG tests, while the Quadrifoglio managed 15.8/28.5/19.8 mpg—in both cases, underperforming the EPA ratings slightly in city and combined and significantly exceeding them on the highway.
As for safety, the Giulia was rated a Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS, its highest rating, and earned top marks for its automatic emergency braking and headlamp systems. The Giulia carries a five-star rating in the European NCAP evaluation. It offers smart cruise control (down to a full stop), forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and numerous other systems. And although other cars blare Klaxons to warn of a lane departure, the Giulia thumps a bass line more akin to a Deadmau5 beat.
As to the elephant in the room: Some readers with long memories will recall Alfas of yore as temperamental and unreliable—the main reason for its departure from this market in 1993. And upon Alfa Romeo’s return to the U.S., some early-build 2017 Giulias had issues with electrical gremlins. But in this year’s accelerated wear-and-tear Car of the Year testing of three Giulias, we found nary a glitch, hiccup, or bark of protest—while several cars from other luxury automakers had notable issues.
Is the Giulia perfect? No, but neither are any of its rivals. T from PerformanceJunk WP Feed 3 http://ift.tt/2BjHSs1 via IFTTT
