ncfan listens to The Magnus Archives: S2 EP046, ‘Literary Heights’
- We have the return of Ex Altiorā from ‘Page Turner’, and an explanation for what the story in it is about, from someone who is actually literate in Latin. It’s about as cheerful as you’d expect. A remote village becomes aware of some kind of beast (alternately called a demon, alternately called a god) slowly stalking towards them from far in the distance. It’s monstrously huge, its head and body lost in the clouds. They prepare to do battle with it, but every time they finish their preparations, the beast comes a little closer, and they realize that it is much bigger than they had thought, which renders all their preparations for naught. Finally, as the beast approaches, the villagers realize that it is incomprehensibly vast in size, and seeing nothing else to do, hurl themselves over a cliff to their deaths rather than meet their deaths at the hands of the beast.
Yeah, real cheerful.
No spoilers, please!
- It honestly sounds like Michael Crew’s brush with the heavens after being struck by lightning marked him for attention from the supernatural, somehow. The way the light bulbs burn brighter when he’s around, and how the figure chasing him matches the appearance of the Lichtenberg figure on his neck (and presumably on his back as well, unless Dominic Swain was remembering it incorrectly). Knox assumed Mike was a student of demonology for him to be buying all the books he did from him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was just trying to find something, anything that would give him an answer as to how to get rid of his pursuer.
I do wonder how he came to know about Jurgen Leitner and his books, though. Leitner’s reputation among book dealers seems to be that he was a wealthy eccentric who often bought rare books, but the association with the supernatural doesn’t come up in Knox’s statement. The most we hear is that there are unsavory rumors about Leitner’s personal life. It’s possible that The Bone-Turner’s Tale was Mike’s exposure to a Leitner tome, but given that he seems to have read it all the way to the end without mutilating his own body through bone manipulation, it’s also possible that he didn’t realize that book’s power (Or that that book just wouldn’t work for him, which would be interesting in and of itself, if true). But given the way he immediately pounced on Ex Altiorā, it’s clear that Mike knew the reputation of Leitner’s books, and was willing to give credit to the idea that a Leitner tome could be the answer to his problems.
- Knox’s comment about how the youngsters visiting his shop would flee the premises as soon as they saw the price reminds me of Andre Ramao in ‘Lost and Found.’ Sorry us young people don’t have that much in the way of disposable income and can’t afford to splurge on rare books, man.
- I wonder where all of Mike’s money is coming from.
- That shrill whine they’re using as a background noise in the episode is very effective.
- The indication that a lot of the book dealers in the 1990s who died or gone missing were the ones who wound up with the Leitners that managed to make it out of Leitner’s library, which suggests that Leitner’s books seem to be inherently deadly.
- As Jon later points out, the woodcut Dominic Swain focuses on in ‘Page Turner’, that of a starry sky (which houses also the Lichtenberg figure after Mary Keay—her ghost or something pretending to be her—passes it through the shadows) is never mentioned in Knox’s statement. It seems that the figure chasing Mike became part of the book after Mike “gave himself” to the book. It’s possible that Mike did, but I’m inclined to be a little skeptical of that. No one ever found Mike’s body at the base of the bell tower, to be sure, but no one ever found the book, either. And no matter how charged with supernatural powers a Leitner tome may be, it likely didn’t grow legs and walk away.
- If Ex Altiorā was a unique book, I wonder for what purpose it was written or commissioned. Was it always meant to be a focus for a certain power, or did that not come until later?
- Apparently, even before the climax of this episode, the book was able to trigger a sense of vertigo. But the smell of ozone doesn’t come until after.
- Herbert Knox’s sudden decision to chase after Mike because Mike was “stealing [his] Leitner” is interesting, because it comes on so suddenly that it doesn’t feel natural. Even Knox admits that he was a bit surprised at himself for coming to that decision. Is there some sort of supernatural wonkiness about ownership as regards to Leitner books? Do they exert some sort of hold on whoever “legally” owns them that makes the owner possessive of them?
- Mike chanting “Altiorā – Vertigo – The Vast” at his pursuer. I know arc words when I see ‘em.
- Given the later revelation that all the windows in the bell tower were sealed, I wonder if Mike’s jumping through the window was more symbolic than anything else.
- Jon’s comments and the supplemental post carry more than one moment that alarms me. First is Jon having somehow gone from wanting to destroy all the surviving Leitner texts to wanting to read one. His animus in ‘Page Turner’ came off like someone who’d had a personal encounter with a Leitner book and had not come off better in that encounter. He’s read statements that detail the damage a Leitner can do. Just how far gone is he that he’d want to read one?
Second are the spiders in the tunnel eating the desiccated worms. This is equal parts interesting and alarming. It’s interesting because spiders have come up as a supernatural entity before, and in ‘Arachnophobia’ their appearance in the apartment building the statement giver was living in seems related to Jane Prentiss’s occupancy in the basement. This seems similar, not least because I can’t see normal spiders going for dried-out worm husks. I feel like they’d be too desiccated. It’s alarming because if these spiders aren’t normal spiders, then yet another supernatural entity has taken residence in what is essentially the Archive’s basement.
Third is Jon’s potential reaction to the fact that someone seems to have been going down into the tunnels. If he can’t find a way to set up a camera, I worry about what he might do.

so like, the whole disaster of that field training, was it part of Aizen’s plans?
Like I don’t remember how much control he had over Hollows already but he possibly could be idk, releasing them somewhere on purpose right?
Because then if he comes to save the students, who are desperate and on the brink of death, then they’re gonna respect the hell out of him and all right? So that puts the first gears for, let’s say, Hinamori’s entire trust and faith in him, as well as Kira’s for Gin, right? As for Renji (and I guess Hisagi too), even if he doesn’t end up as the two others do, it still puts Aizen and Gin in a favorable place for him (he saved them! Of course he’s not a bad guy!)
this is what I meant the one time I said Aizen messes up my brain lmao When you know he’s a villain there’s so much you end up questioning, like, how much of everything is his doing and is everything happening as he willed it or is he just taking the opportunities that throw themselves at him (like Ichigo and the other coming to cause chaos in Soul Society)
