(Or: The first official concept album for the greek-mythology-inspired musical I’ve been following over on TikTok dropped over Christmas and listening to it left me absolutely POSSESSED by the spirit of animation so I churned out this lil' snippet super-quickly in between hella deadline work and holiday hectic-ness sdgksgfh -- I'd love to chip away at this more throughout the new year if I can, but for now I just had to show some love for the AMAZING work Jorge and the entire cast and crew put into the show's first album! Can't wait to hear the rest!! 💖)

JAY WHEN I CATCH YOU JAY!!

I know, I know, I am so late to the ever-growing brainrot due to Epic now with the Underworld Saga out but I honestly needed to just sit with that thing for a while.

Polites was obviously expected, but the open arms reprise still hurt, especially with Ody deciding to abandon Polites's ideals, which are something he has considered to be a crucial part of him for a long time.

What made this more tragic is the fact that we as an audience know for a fact that the monster ideology is what will get Odysseus back home and would have also not gotten Polites killed and yet it's so much better that he doesn't have to witness his best friend become that sort of monster and he could instead die with some semblance of peace knowing for all the pain it got him Odysseus still believed in his ideals till his dying breath and only in death has Odysseus made peace with the monster he has to become and that he will never have to see it or know it happen especially because he was one of the catalysts that incited it. (It would destroy Polites to know that, but he doesn't. Therefore, he died in peace with his ideals held intact, and so did his best friend because Odysseus is no longer himself when he gets back!!!!!!)

Don't even get me started on Anticlea. Tell me it doesn't haunt Odysseus for the rest of his days. The hollow voice waiting and waiting unwavering in love as it fades for something that will never be a reality, not for Anticlea, not in her lifetime and him forever unable to soothe her even after he brings his mother's once futile hopes to fruition. And the tragedy that no matter how enduring a will and unwavering her beliefs, she is and has always been betting against Gods and for all their supposed benevolence they will not grant her only wish; that she dies with no semblance of an idea of what happened to her beloved son.

And Odysseus is the most tragic of them all for he knows all of this and more, has to feel and survive past it and watch his own descent into monstrosity as he falters at last in the face of a wretched Prophecy that seeks to upend all hopes of the haven he thought he would be returning to from the hell he has sailed through.

God the songs are so good and so just and so repulsively heartwrenching when you think on it for even a little while, I swear Jay and the whole Epic cast has written arguably the greatest masterpiece of a musical!

🤍The feathers are from an owl called "Athene noctua" and is associated with Athena/is believed to be Athena's owl

🤍The statue she is holding is Nike, goddess of Victory and often paired with Athena (and no, that's not a weeping angel)

🤍The cobweb on the necklace (for Arachne) and Medusa's face are to represent old grudges Athena has (very prideful indeed)*

🤍Apparently emerald green was a colour associated with Athena. I love the way green looks with Teagan's red hair so I just went with it 😊

*Edit/small note : Athena is known for not being a girl's girl. But it's also quite well known that stories are often translated by men who like to pit women against each others. There are multiple versions of each Greek stories. For Medusa, some say that she was turned into a monster by Athena because she was in the wrong. Others say that she was turned that way out of mercy from Athena, so that she would never be hurt by men again. For Arachne, some say that she was turned into a spider because she won and Athena was too prideful to accept her defeat. Others will say that she lost against the goddess and k*lled herself. She was changed into a spider by Athena so she could keep weaving for all eternity.

I think these two elements can either be seen as old grudges Athena has or testimonies toward these two people she couldn't save on time (add the spear for Pallas into that but that's another story). Imo, the lyrics I was inspired by in My goodbye (selfish and prideful and vain) can be interpreted like Odysseus having actually no idea what really happened, or him being actually right and Athena being all of these. Anyway, I love all the layers in every song !

The red string of fate is found in lichtenberg figures!!!

And Eddie’s back on a red rope (the first one he’s been on since Sheila’s balcony iirc) to climb up to him at a time when buck will have the figures.

And maybe Eddie will have some too - if he does in fact get hit by lightning. And all these red strings are connected…

The thing with lichtenberg figures is that they don’t last long - 24 to 48 hours usually (sometimes a bit longer depending on the severity of the strike) so Buck won’t have a permenant reminder, but we the audience will have seen them connected by that red string of fate. There is beauty in it only being visible for a short time - the red string is meant to be invisible - so is getting to see it temporarily is a really lovely narrative device the writers are using to clue the audience in!

and despite villainizing him still had to pair him & Steve off with women while they’re sneaking off to meet each other

and had to give Steve a girlfriend to de-gay his reunion with openly-gay Arnie Roth...

And then MCU Steve is SO obsessed with Bucky that they had to give them beards every time they're alone together in public, and then had to cut down on their screen time together, keep them physically separated in frame, forbid one character from even mentioning the other, separate them in time, and kill one of them off.

And I'm just like

Guys.

You do realise that actually straight characters wouldn't need all this 'fixing', right??
