the way it took less episodes for tng to begin to humanize the borg the most inhuman trek villains who were actively built up as literally like faceless drones there wasnt much of an ethical implication about killing but literally their second appearance in best of both worlds already trying to imagine what it would be like to be a borg drone from picards perspective and next they show up in i borg where its like ok we take the normal star trek approach of seeing every living being as worthwhile and not inherently monstrous and so on that was fewer episodes than what theyre doing with the gorn its like crazy
Even just from a style perspective, the borg spent a few episodes like oh no, scary!’ And then bc that would have been boring to just keep doing, they started to do eps like ‘what if we captured a borg, could we ethically send it back with a disease to kill all of them’ or even just some pure drama of ‘what if captain picard…. BECAME a borg???’ And then an episode following up on the guilt of that. And even then, I was surprised how few tng episodes were about the borg. Snw is hamstrung by having half the eps in a season, but instead of really packing new stuff in, they keep wasting time on ‘what if we had cool guns to kill gorn monsters with’. Which while fun or silly in its own self-aware genre, feels really out of place and boring in Star Trek.
I think it also is just an incoherent view of the gorn as a species. They’re instinct-driven violent predators with no intelligence; but they’re also smart enough to build ships and space suits? They’re cannibalistic, but they’re also able to work together to command ships. They’re animals who are just trying to eat; but actually they’re intelligent enough to be ‘pure evil’. It’s whatever is convenient in the moment to justify unexamined thrill in murdering them.
If they were animals with instinctive behavior, then I think the Star Trek precedent would be: let’s defend ourselves and get the fuck out of here, but also these are just animals trying to survive and reproduce (ie: picard wouldn’t develop a bloodthirsty vengeful hatred against all bears if a bear killed a crew member). There is no ethical behavior behind animals eating and surviving. A wasp is kind of gross when it reproduces by injecting its eggs into another insect, but it’s not ‘evil’.
But that would mean the gorn wouldn’t be intelligent enough to have spaceships, which creates the convenient problem that our brave heroes HAVE to keep killing them without debate bc the gorn are able to pursue them! So somehow the gorn are smart enough to build spaceships capable of pursuing starfleet ships. They are smart enough for their actions to be considered ‘evil’. But not smart enough to be considered a race with a culture or intellect.
I’ve already talked about how the ep where they say the gorn block telepathy, meaning spock can’t talk to them, is a deliberate way of writing off diplomacy as a possibility. Those nasty gorn are just so mean and violent (and capable enough) that they block telepathy! It’s their fault! Which prevents a devil in the dark Horta solution, and allows the show to shrug and keep using guns as a solution.
I say all of this crap not because I really care about the integrity of the gorn. Who cares, it’s a fun alien. But in a franchise that wants to claim political awareness and goodness, its unsettling to dissect repeated writing choices over and over again (not just about the gorn) that support classic conservative and jingoistic talking points. “The enemy isn’t human or even intelligent, it’s an animal operating on base instincts; except when it’s so smart it can outwit our brave soldiers. And when you kill them, you can ENJOY killing them, because it’s one more dead enemy.”
The borg, changelings, jem hedar, Klingons, romulans— they were handled, some more than others, in ways that should invite criticism and skepticism about the intentions of the show. But they were humanized and explored further than ‘excuse to hand everyone an assault rifle and swat armor.’ A new show would ideally be improving or challenging past shows’ failures or missteps, not taking a huge step back. The gorn problem is even more glaring because it’s a sharp and bleak turn from the themes of trek shows that precede SNW, and from the actual episode the gorn come from.

Theory explaining Ruan Nanzhu's attitude towards Zhuang Rujiao
What happened between the Human Skin Drum arc and Sako/Zuozi arc (episodes 10 - 12), inspired by this post: https://www.tumblr.com/lonelylonelyghost/754097337279954944/re-watch-of-the-spirealm-episode-14
To preface, Ruan Nanzhu's behaviour towards Zhuang Rujiao is quite interesting. She was neither a competitor for Lin Qiushi's attention like Xu Jin nor hostile towards Lin Qiushi in any way. She maintains a neutrally positive attitude towards Lin Qiushi. So there isn't a clear reason why Ruan Nanzhu was "bullying" her (in Lin Qiushi's words).
Of course, the obvious reasons are as follows:
Ruan Nanzhu's "training" her (lol)
Motivating Li Dongyuan
Ruan Nanzhu's mocking her sajiao
Censorship-safe flirting with Lin Qiushi
But I headcannon another reason after rewatching it again and overthinking.
First off, a general timeline of events:
Lin Qiushi has been attacked by the door god('s sister. I think they are both door gods?) and comes out of the door with a concussion
Zhuang Rujiao joins Obsidian as a spy who failed her mission before she even joined.
Lin Qiushi unconscious. When he wakes up, he is visited by Ruan Nanzhu (who tells him he had plans) then Cheng Qianli (who tells him someone new joined while he was unconscious)
Zhuang Rujiao and Ruan Nanzhu go through many doors.
Ruan Nanzhu tells Lin Qiushi "7 days", which Chen Fei reiterates "6 days" the day after during the hospital visit.
Zhuang Rujiao ends up in the hospital after a door then leaves Obsidian with the fake box of clues after her release.
So, what happened while Lin Qiushi was unconscious?
The drama has condensed much of the passage of time compared to the drama. First off, Lin Qiushi was sent to the hospital for a month. Cheng Qianli doesn't speak of a new person joining, instead he says that White Deer has been investigating them. The new person only "joins" after Lin Qiushi has been discharged. Therefore, we will ignore the novel's timeframe.
Let's also assume there are no continuity errors that happened due to the adaptation condensing the above events.
This is what we know concerning new people and Zhuang Rujiao's circumstances:
You can't join Obsidian before your first door
Zhuang Rujiao must have either met Ruan Nanzhu while in the door or contacted him afterwards via the forum.
Ruan Nanzhu helped her with her 2nd door and then officially brought her to Obsidian
However, she was known to Cheng Qianli before she was officially a member. He even complains how Ruan Nanzhu has been only bringing her into doors on her first day in Obsidian
Therefore, Ruan Nanzhu must have learned about Zhuang Rujiao before Lin Qiushi was awake and put her on Obsidian's radar. Then, shortly after Lin Qiushi wakes up, Ruan Nanzhu completes the 2nd door with her. But Cheng Qianli implied that he brought her through more than one door.
So Ruan Nanzhu must have entered a door with Zhuang Rujiao before Lin Qiushi woke up.
This is my headcannon. Ruan Nanzhu, while worried sick over Lin Qiushi, learns that White Deer has been investigating them and is forced to leave his bedside to receive the spy.
It gets even better.
During the hospital visit, Chen Fei tells Lin Qiushi that he has to hide his medical abilities from outsiders, hence why they sent Zhuang Rujiao to the hospital but didn't send Ruan Nanzhu. In the drama, Lin Qiushi was also not sent to the hospital, which means that Chen Fei was the one to take care of him too. So perhaps…
Ruan Nanzhu purposefully falls for the White Deer spy so that they won't realize Chen Fei's abilities while Lin Qiushi is in his care. White Deer also has no idea that Lin Qiushi has been injured in the Human Skin Drum door.
So poor Zhuang Rujiao was stuck doing a task she didn't really want to do in the first place at the worst possible moment, making her the target of all of Ruan Nanzhu's ire and death glares. (He looked like he wanted to murder her with the apple in the hospital 😂)
Furthermore, since doors usually take several days to complete and Ruan Nanzhu most definitely planned for Lin Qiushi to go through some of them with him, Ruan Nanzhu was probably thinking/worrying over Lin Qiushi while on babysitting duty and just doing whatever he could to make her crack as fast as possible. 7 days was his deadline before he actually snapped. Good thing she escaped before then.

what are your fave finn centric episodes?
just asking for a friend :]
ooh, my favourite eps for Finn, I'll try to do one for each season, plus some honourable mentions...
Ballad--sure he's an idiot but good gravy, he's a charming idiot. The karate in the bathroom, I'll Stand By You (my beloved) and the utter sincerity in You're Having My Baby despite the fact it was a Bad Move. Also, he jumps in to defend Quinn from her parents and stands up for her, which is pretty sweet. Besides, it's the beginning of Furt, which is very important.
My suggestion for Season Two episodes, is always going to The Sue Sylvester Shuffle--best episode of the show fr fr, and has Finn showing some admirable leadership.
Heart--the only season 3 episode where Finn is in focus without putting him through the wringer--we get some excellent Finn/Rachel interactions, plus The Dads. Also that scene during Love Shack where he pops up with the massive grin.
Dynamic Duets--the beginning of Teacher! Finn, and he's so cute in this episode. Besides, he's really good with Ryder and Jake. (also I love the newbies and this is a good ep for them)
OTHER HONOURABLE MENTIONS:
Preggers--Finn crying makes me sad, but Cory's acting in this scene is incredible. Also, early Furt, my beloved
Sectionals--THE ACTING! In the confrontation scene. It's truly brilliant. Also the beginning of Finn's leadership skills
Grilled Cheesus--most episodes where I'm hyping Cory's acting, it's usually ones where he's making me cry, but in this case, I'm hyping the utter earnestness he shows in approaching the wildest material. Like, Finn believing that Jesus is in his sandwich is incredibly stupid, but Cory's acting makes me fully believe that this is something that could happen in Finn's reality. Besides, it's hilarious.
Duets--not a great episode for Finn on his own (he's not great with Sam and Kurt), but it's called the best episode for Finchel for a reason. The chemistry, acting and humour is off the charts for both.
The Rocky Horror Glee Show--Finn is my favourite part of this episode.
Silly Love Songs--he's being a tool in this episode, but it's so fun to watch
Born This Way--he's very out of focus here, but he gets I've Gotta Be Me, and the goofy smile on his face before he breaks Rachel's nose is everything
Rumours--always a top-tier episode for everyone, and it has a lot of Finn/Quinn--they're such a toxic couple, but they're fascinating together.
Yes/No--it's hard to watch in the light of Cory's death, but a very good episode for Finn, and the acting is so moving
Nationals--Paradise By The Dashboard Light. Enough Said.
That's all I can think of for now

2x08 - Furt
Marry You - New Directions
“I’m lucky. Most women, when they get married, they get one man. I get two. One of you saved me from my wardrobe, the other one just saved me. Kurt, you are an amazing person. I’m not only getting a son, I’m getting a friend. Finn… I know you were resistant at first, but I am so proud of you. I’ve watched you grow into a man. But I think I’m most proud that you’ve become a brother to Kurt. We are four people. Becoming a family.” - Carole Hudson
