SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Daydream Believer” w/Davy Jones live in Japan—a country that was always a favorite place for The Monkees. They toured there in 1968 and 1989, then with Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart in the 1970s, then Davy Jones (solo) went there in 1982-83, 1999, and 2010. Recordings were made of those appearances but, surprisingly, there is little audio documentation of Davy's 2010 concerts. The audio of this track is from the Tokyo Billboard 7/6/10 but the video is from a Florida concert in May 2010. Davy passed away in 2012 but Japan will always love him and The Monkees. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrGq-uEnncA

I love that Tunde from #tvontheradio is on this record. In the early days of this century, Brooklyn just rocked! Karen O could be one of the best front persons in a band - she is so talented, that I was in Sydney Australia in 2012 and she was headlining an opera at The Sydney Opera House she wrote titled #stopthevirgens - this album with great songs like #zero , #headswillroll #skeletons - this album song for song is simply brilliant- Enjoy (at Hollywood Hills) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca8no6vL-Io/?utm_medium=tumblr

We were so happy to have Superhuman Happiness come by and record some tracks with us!  Check out these panoramas Kevin took of the session.
They are such a talented and creative group of musicians. We got super sweet drum sounds using the DDRUM triggers through the nord drum and Stuart Bogie and Eric Biondo’s epic horns and synth lines mixed and Andrea Diaz’s sultry vocals make for a super unique sound.  Looking forward to getting these tracks out there.

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: The Monkees live at the Royal Albert Hall 5/19/11 (complete show) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxW1Cdo5LTo&t=3181s It's hard to believe it's been 13 years since this auspicious event. I was the bassist-vocalist on this tour and here are a few recollections: The Monkees 45th Anniversary Tour was a commercial and critical success, even getting good reviews in Rolling Stone (whose editors historically have been Monkees-bashers). It was a touchstone reunion featuring the excellent multi-media staging work of Andrew Sandoval, deep album cuts as well as the hits, and the entire HEAD film soundtrack performed live. It would also turn out to be the last tour with Davy Jones, who died 9 months later. The tour went around England, Scotland, Canada, and across the United States, but (surprisingly) no professional film or recording was made. What survives are countless phone videos of mixed quality. Thanks to Elixir101, who gathered videos from various sources and edited this summation of the sold-out Royal Albert Hall concert, booked after Eric Clapton gave up one night of his usual May residency at the Hall so The Monkees could perform. You can read the entire set list on the Youtube caption. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxW1Cdo5LTo&t=3181s

MY SONG OF THE WEEK: “Night Garden” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/night-garden-featuring-mike-garson-beyondo I was playing cruise ship gigs and a bass line kept flowing out of me. Every time I played this groove, musicians would start jamming, people would start dancing… It turned into this psychedelic Cuban-jazzified pop song. Latin and Caribbean music is animated and easeful to me, rhythmically and harmonically, making me feel I’m moving with confidence no matter what’s going on in the world. My lyrics were inspired after reading an airline magazine article by Lee May, a journalist from Atlanta who was passionate about gardening. His wonderful words about “plant life that blooms at only night” left an impression. As to the lyrics, Donald Fagen says he chooses words because they suit the shape of his mouth and the lure of a melody—words flow and find their own meaning. That was my approach: Like winding tendrils, words and melody twined into “a song novelette” about a pair of lovers heading south of the border, on the lam because of an unspecified crime.

The music bed was recorded in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Williamsport PA (final mix by Xavier Francis). It features the brilliant drum/trumpet/co-production work of Eric Biondo (a.k.a. Beyondo) + magnificent piano by Mike Garson, a composer-artist in his own right but also known as David Bowie’s longtime keyboardist.

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: Davy Jones & Micky Dolenz Live @ Disney Epcot May 7, 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLydK9B_EmA Starting in 1995, Davy Jones and band appeared annually at Disney Epcot, routinely booked for 3-5 days, 3 sets a day, with dates usually set around Mother’s Day (though I recall some as early as March). People from around the world attended, with some scheduling their vacations around it. Davy brought me in on keyboards for the 1997 series (I remember Sandy Gennaro winging broken drum sticks at me) then every year from 2005 to 2011. We had great food, fun, laughs, and good times, and the Disney staff treated us like royalty. For me it was an opportunity to catch up with Floridian family and friends. Sometimes guests such as Flo & Eddie would drop in, and on this occasion, Micky Dolenz literally rolled on to the stage. Hard to believe that 13 years has flown by since we were up on that hot stage by the lake—and it was the last time we did it. Immediately after wrapping up the Epcot shows, everyone got on a plane for England to begin the 2011 Monkees reunion tour… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLydK9B_EmA

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: Davy Jones live @ BB King NYC 2/18/12 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr7kLPG0mnU&t=3497s Over the years, Davy Jones and band performed many times at BB King's in New York City’s Times Square. This video is a complete and definitive document and, as it turned out, it marks the last time he'd appear there before he passed away on February 29, 2012. The set includes the rarely performed Tommy Boyce song "I Love You Like I Love New York City," and an ever rarer cover of "All of Me" + at 56:00 is the much-requested "Someday Man" (written by Paul Williams for The Monkees). The sound quality of this video is very good, conveying the tight playing and vocal harmonies of the band as well as capturing a cache of Davy's comedy and stories. Hard to believe he was gone 11 days later. RIP DJ. Miss ya mate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr7kLPG0mnU&t=3497s

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: Davy Jones – “Free: The Greatest Story Ever Told” (A Monkees Tale) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0udT5n_q5c …Fame is a bittersweet blessing. The lyrics in this song describe David Thomas Jones’s life, told through the lens being a celebrity and a simple man. The things in life that were truly important to him made him feel “free,” yet he couldn’t deny his gifts of being “Davy Jones” the actor, singer-songwriter, and member of The Monkees—with whom he had an incredible bond. The song was written by Alan Green, who’d been in the Davy/Monkees orbit since the late 70s. This version was produced and performed by Alan with Mark Clarke and members of The Grass Roots and The Monkees touring band circa 1989. The video includes edits from a fan-made collage + newly found images + cuts from a 2008 phone video from a Mohegan Sun concert with Peter Tork in attendance. The band at Mohegan amazingly locked into the original tempo and added soaring harmonies. The master of this recording has been lost—the audio on this video is from a high quality 1st generation cassette copy and has been remastered:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0udT5n_q5c

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Papa Gene’s Blues” live 3/7/08 w/Davy Jones & Peter Tork. Hard to believe it’s been 15 years since that night Peter jumped onstage with us at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut (I think my Mom was in the front row just to my right). This “Texan samba” was written and sung by Mike Nesmith for the Monkees 1966 debut album. We always had fun playing it, drawing out as many country-cowboy riffs we could. The fidelity of this video is a bit jumpy and rough, but the exuberance of the occasion supersedes technical limitations. Enjoy!
