Kansai Studies 2023 新リサーチャーを迎え始動

2020年度に新ディレクターチームでKYOTO EXPERIMENT のディレクションを引き継ぐことになった際に、それはそれはたくさん話し合い（今もですが）、パフォーマンス作品を上演するプログラムShowsの他にこのKansai StudiesとSuper Knowledge for the Future (SKF)というふたつのプログラムを新設しました。

今日の「国際舞台芸術祭」とはどういったものがいいのだろうか、KYOTO EXPERIMENTはこれからどういうフェスティバルになれるのだろうかと考えた際に、これまでのように国際的に話題のアーティストや作品をきちんと紹介することは大事だけど、同時にそのフェスティバルがどういう土地・土台で行われているのかとということをより考え、反映できることがいいのではないかと考えました。

つまりこのフェスティバルが京都で行われているということに意味がないといけない。そのためにはもっとこの土地に着目し、どういう風に街やその文化が成り立っているのかフェスティバルとして知る必要があると考えました。そういった問題意識と好奇心から立ち上がったのがこのKansai Studiesです。

コロナ禍でのスタートだったので苦戦しましたが2020年度から3年間は、京都や関西圏の「水」についてやお好み焼きから考える「食文化」についてリサーチと発表、3年目にはそのリサーチをもとに演劇作品の制作も行い終えました。

4年目となる2023年度からは、リサーチャーを公募することでよりフェスティバルを開いていこうと考え、様々なテーマを提案してくれた以下の5名のリサーチャーとそのリサーチ内容が決まりました。

野咲 タラ「各地域における農耕牛の記憶について」

迎 英里子「関西にある水場を埋めてできた土地についてのリサーチ」

以上のメンバーで今年度は進めていければと思います。

先日、第1回目のミーティングを京都芸術センターで開催し、各リサーチャーの紹介やリサーチ内容の共有を行いました。早速色々な情報が共有され、さすがに皆さんいいアンテナをお持ちです。

これから様々なリサーチ内容を更新しウェブで共有していきますので、皆さん是非楽しみにしていてください。

Kansai Studies 2023 Commences with New Researchers

Upon taking over direction for Kyoto Experiment as the new Director Team in 2020, we engaged in countless discussions (still ongoing) and decided to introduce two programs alongside the performance-focused Shows program: Kansai Studies and Super Knowledge for the Future (SKF).

When we thought about the question of what an international performing arts festival should be and envisioned the future of Kyoto Experiment, we knew it was important to continue presenting artists and works of international acclaim. However, we also believed in the significance of examining and reflecting on the unique region and roots of the festival’s location. 

In other words, our aim was to find purpose in holding this festival in Kyoto. To achieve this, we felt it was important to turn our attention to the land and gain an understanding, as a festival, of how the city and culture developed. From this awareness and curiosity emerged Kansai Studies.

It was challenging to launch the program during a pandemic. However, over the course of these three years since 2020, we have successfully presented research on the water of the Kyoto and Kansai area, as well as the food culture of the region, using okonomiyaki as a departure point. The third year of the program marked the completion of a theater piece based on this research.

In 2023, our fourth year, we aimed to further broaden the festival’s engagement by holding an open call. We are pleased to announce the five selected researchers and their diverse themes of exploration.

We are excited to move forward with these research members.

Recently, we held our first meeting at Kyoto Art Center, where we got to know the researchers and the contents of their research. Already, we have witnessed a fruitful exchange of information, for which every member indeed has an excellent eye.

Collar x Malice - At the Fair

Mineo Enomoto - Walks into the face-painting stall and asks to be adorned with Kabuki make-up. Walks out a juggalo. Attempts to tackle the All You Can Eat corndog contest. Narrowly loses when he accidentally chokes on a stick, but survives due to what he believes was Takeru giving him the Heimlich maneuver.

Takeru Sasazuka - Is too short to be let on any of the rides. People keep coming up to him, holding cotton candy next to his head and taking photos. A passing clown makes him a balloon-hat because "No little boy should be sad at the fair"! Trudging by the corndog contest, Takeru, enraged by the sight of Mineo's red choking face, punches him in the gut so hard he dislodges the stick. Takes the rest of his anger out on the unlucky sap manning the dunk tank.

Kei Okazaki - Mans a kissing booth. States he is raising funds for Yanagi's detective agency. Yanagi hands him a 1000 yen note and asks him to "please, please, go home".

Kageyuki Shiraishi - Participates in the 'Guess the Weight of the Sow' competition. Makes a series of guesses aloud and is able to win by analyzing the host's reaction to each one and adjusting his final answer accordingly. After a hearty congratulatory handshake, is asked for where his car is so they can load the prize-pig (lovingly named 'Aiji Hamagi') into it to take home. Shiraishi gives them Mukai's license plate number.

Aiji Yanagi - Isn't all that interested in any of the activities until he comes across the 'World's Largest Yam' attraction. Spends the rest of the day in a heated discussion with a group of root vegetable farmers extolling the origin and versatility of the common spud.

So just a quick post, because I wanted to mention this. As you can see, this is a collection of all the characters from Collar x Malice as taken from the official website. I would really like to write for all of these guys (or many of these guys) as well as the main characters so feel free to request them. Give the side characters some love too! Also given I’ve crossed out the characters I’ve written relationship headcanons for so far spoils one that I’ve done. However, you’ll have to wait a short time before it’s actually released. Freelance writer Aoi lives in Paris; photographer Sen came to Paris at his younger sisters insistence. Over the next three days, Aoi and Sen fall in love.

That just wasn't very interesting. Improvised and low budget can be charming, but this had a strong amateurish feel. The set-up was built on quite the coincidence.

And the second story strand felt more like an afterthought. It would've been preferable to better develop the main story.
