AKIRA au based on the biohazard fish jacket because the brainworms demanded it to exist.
If Grimmer is Kaneda in this AU I can only imagine that Roberto is Tetsuo...watching his old friend from the orphanage deteriorate into someone consumed by power
I guess Lunge would be Kei? Feels like the most likely candidate to have the power to channel psychic abilities as a medium.

Hiya! I made an Akira fanart inspired by the 35th anniversary! It started from me wanting to draw my favorite boy Masaru and it evolved in this little familial scene, with the boys taking care of their girl Kiyoko 🥰 I hope you like it!

@ancientforged replied to your post “A lot of supernatural powers are cool and get my...”:
Mob 100
Oh my gosh yeah! The scene in the first season of Mob where he hits 100% while still conscious is up there for my favorite anime moments.

Esper X Tantei-sha Sayonara no Sagashimono, YIELD Final Version, Daichiyo Aino to Shite Ikiru, Houkago Angler Life, Life work of Akira Kurosawa, Japanese Film Trailers
Happy Weekend This is the second part of the two-part trailer post for this week. The first part is here. Well, this week saw me swerve around in terms of films I wrote about as I was taken by the Jack Nicholson picture The Passenger (1975) and wanted to write something about it. Usually, I write about Japanese films – like, this week I wrote about Love and Murder of Sheep and Wolf – but I’ll be…

Round 2: Match 4
"Two Sides of the Same Coin"- Two things that are regarded as part of the same thing. Even if they're very different, they have at least one common thread that helps them fit into this trope.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Akira Kurusu and Goro Akechi:
"Pitted against each other by a cruel god as his playthings. Both had their lives altered by the same man. They both have the power to summon more than one persona, but while Joker hs multiple and also a whole team of friends to support him, Akechi only has two and is alone. Akechi is the foil to all of the Phantom Thieves, him being the version of them that used the powers of their Persona to exact his revenge, instead of reforming the people they went after."
"They both have the ability to have multiple personas, but only one used it for good (Akira) and the other used it for evil (Akechi). They've both been through hardships caused by the same man, but Akechi decided to use his powers to get revenge, while Akira decided to use his powers to make the man feel guilt. Also, during their Showtime attack, there's a big sign in the background that says "Two Sides of the Same Coin" in all caps!" *edit, added the second propaganda because I somehow forgot to add it
Serizawa Katsuya and Kageyama "Mob" Shigeo:
"They are both powerful espers with similar backstories. They've both hurt people with their powers on accident when they were younger. They both want friends. They were both taken in by someone who offered them a purpose to use their powers. But while Mob got a good role model, Serizawa got taken advantage of."

On December 6th 1992, an ESPer known as Akira, lost control of his power and ended up destroying Tokyo. The government covered this up by claiming it was a nuclear explosion. It did in fact lead to the beginning of World War III. ("Akira", manga)

I'm rereading the entire manga in color but every time at any moment those hallucinations/holograms come up, it hits so differently after reading volume 6 and the foreshadowing is so clever. The presence was similar to Takashi because it was Akira who controlled the psychic imagination, and thus could see those memories.
Tumblr media
This was so sick foreshadowing because thinking about it, it was sort of a warning? Yet it was when all the other Espers started to float and reunite with Akira; to me, that's some sort of reminiscing about what could have been prevented by taking a glimpse back to the past (here), before the post-apocalyptic abomination happening...I think it's just me because I'm seriously finding it so interesting how this was a result of the power consumption being too uncontrollable before the worst moments happened. So Kei knew from the beginning but it wasn't clear yet, it was vague. I think the loop is sequential after the ending. It's some sort of cyclical metaphor where it starts to pick up smaller details based on revisiting our old mistakes or memories because...Well, we can't turn back time. Can never change the past.

She was the first cosmic horror oc I made, but I got a little too excited and ended up making a whole patheon
She used to be a sweet, polite and confident young woman before becoming a esper, now she acts clinically insane most of the time, but there are moments of clarity where her old personality comes back, such moments are extremely rare though
Her design was heavily inspired by Kara, which is ironic considering they would absolutely hate each other

Profiles in Villainy
Tetsuo
Tetsuo Shima was a member of a youth biker gang that roamed the streets of Neo Tokyo.  A chance encounter with an escaped Esper patient resulted in powerful psychic powers awakening within him.  These abilities grow to a level on par with that possessed by Akira, the child whose powers engulfed all old Tokyo in a psychic explosion years prior.
A trio of psychics feared that Tetsuo would similarly destroy the city and attempted to kill him.  They failed and Tetsuo sought out the mysterious Akira going on to rampage through the city in search of him. The military tried in vain to stop him, fearing the threat of another Akira-sized disaster.
Upon finding the remains of Akira under Neo Tokyo's Olympic Stadium, Tetsuo began to lose control of himself and his abilities while confronted by the military, the Espers, and his former best friend, Kaneda. His psychic abilities overwhelmed him and he became a mutated mass of flesh. Akira, called by the Espers, reawakens and beckonned Tetsuo into an alternate dimension.  The city was saved and what ultimately became of Tetsuo’s essence remained unknown.
Actor Nozomu Sasaki provided the voice for Tetsuo in the original animated feature; with actors Jan Rabson and Joshua Seth provided the English language dub.  The tragic villain appeared in the 1988 movie, Akira.

rant post about akira (1988) being overrated
and no, I don't mean I just didn't really like it, or it wasn't my type of movie. after reading so much about it being the greatest anime film of all time, I at least expected a good story which just. wasn't there. yeah, I agree, the "animation is amazing especially for that time" but animation is just a bonus to an actual plot and the plot was so choppy, like they couldn't decide which scene to put next. I feel like they wanted to say "nukes are bad, absolute power is bad, nothing is truly only black or white, and everyone has a potential for good or bad things" which is like. okay, I got that in the first 20 minutes of the movie, now what. now come 2 hours of tightly packed action scenes without gradually resolving stuff that was shown in the beginning. Kaori is in exactly three scenes to ask about Tetsuo, get SAd and then die. okay. Kaneda raises a question about Kei and Ryu, it's never answered. Kei apparently is connected to the Espers??? actually, forget about that. Ryu probably died in that alleyway. or maybe not. also Akira started ww3. how? don't worry about that. he nuked Tokyo and then... someone nuked someone else for some purpose. we should keep guessing about that probably. had to google about Espers after watching just to understand where they came from, and they're just random children? orphans, maybe? and turns out anyone could get those powers unlocked, but while watching I got the idea that they were special from the start. btw Espers are 30+ adults. did everyone forget about that or what. Tetsuo immediately started killing everyone because he was bullied :( I mean, we all want to nuke the whole world when that happens right? no second thoughts? I'd say, Kaneda and Tetsuo beefing was the most okay-developed plotline out of all. and that's it.
basically, animation IS absolutely god-tier, but I forgot about it trying to make sense of what was happening and where things were going and why. i just can't call something a good movie when the story is all over the place, and not in a "it's up to you to decide what happened" but just "we set it up and then dropped without even any hints"

3/4 Akira
I was so not ready for this. I'd heard about Akira early into my Japanese journey and based on the poster and the art style I guess I'd expected it to be something similar to Tron: Legacy with the whole cyberpunk dystopian world feel but wow.
Starting off the art style really gave me Scooby Doo and Spiderman comic vibes with the color pallet as well as how the background moves in one whole piece. Despite reading several explanations online because I'm still a bit fuzzy on the plot, some of my biggest takeaways were these.
Firstly, there's a constant sort of push and pull between who the "bad" guys are and who the "good" ones are. When the first child (Takashi) appeared I was instantly confused because he looked very old and he's fleeing something but then its revealed he actually likes the Colonel along with Kiyoko and Masaru so then I thought maybe the resistance man who was fleeing with him kidnapped him (I'm still unclear tbh). Theres also the side events of the two biker gangs so that was a bit confusing too. As for Akira itself? himself? he seems connected to the original bombing of old Tokyo so his body parts? are locked away but then he saves everyone after being resurrected by the 3 Espers?? OVERALL I WAS SUPER CONFUSED.
BUT it is obvious that good or bad the government is definitely responsible, doing all these experiments on these poor children who've been "thrown away" and then eliminating Akira for getting too powerful- yet another plot point that is wracking my brain. Akira is made out to be this otherworldly being locked away for the supposed greater good only to be revealed as this 10 year old? child the government essentially tortured. I do wonder why he wasn't old and wrinkly looking like the other 3 children as well as what the deal with the palm print numbers was. Because if Akira supposedly caused the old Tokyo bomb 30 years ago maybe the other kids still chronologically but not physically? Also I was not amused when the Colonel not so subtly admits the government basically tore Akira to pieces to study every part of him.
Despite the constant whiplash of side tangents I was really struck by the loyalty of Kaneda to Tetsuo, desperate to save him up until the very end. He is desperate to find him after he's taken to an undisclosed hospital and despite having multiple opportunities can't bring himself to actually take the kill-shot as Tetsuo is releasing Akira. He even jumps into the mass of flesh and metal to try to save Testuo.
Maybe the overall message is that we should be careful of our use of technology and value the people around us. I still thought it was very visually appealing and maybe by my 3rd or 4th watch I'll understand it better.

MONTHLY MEDIA: July 2023
Summertime! Full of good vibes and a bunch of good movies I’ve yet to see. Here’s how I spent the month of July.
……….FILM……….
Tumblr media
Barbie (2023) Just incredible. As an artist who works with existing properties overseen by a lot of people, I was amazed at just how deep, critical, and weird this movie was able to get. I truly had no idea where it was going. Funnier and sillier than I expected but am so thrilled that this wasn’t a generic cash-in.
Lupin the Third: The Mystery of Mamo (1978) Years ago I saw a poster by Sam Bosma and that was both my first introduction to Lupin and the reason I wanted to check him out as a character. Going in mostly blind (aside from knowing the main character is a master thief), this movie was weirder, hornier, and way more avant garde than I was expecting! Some really cool animation on display and while the pacing is up and down, I can’t recommend it enough. The main villain reminded me of a mix between Akira’s espers and Paul Williams and turns out Swan from Phantom of the Paradise was an inspiration! So wild.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
Jury Duty (Episode 1.01 to 1.04) The premise is fun and just when I thought it was starting to dip it turns out the fictional case is compelling too so I’m BACK! Very keen to see how the season ends and what Ronald makes of this in the end.
Mashle (Episode 1.01 to 1.12) This series seems to answer the question: what if Harry Potter was a meathead with no magic? It didn’t really hooked me and the characters are kinda thin but it has moments of wonderful goofiness that I’m glad I finished out the season.
The Bear (Episode 1.04 to 1.08) Just when I thought the show was getting less stressful, the characters pointed out that fact! Then the following episodes ramped up the stress again. But it never feels contrived or unnatural. Everything, from the humor to the stakes to the character interactions, feels wholly organic. Like we’re watching real people live out real lives. I dunno I guess what I’m saying is it’s really good.
……….YOUTUBE……….
Tumblr media
Why American Cities Are Broke - The Growth Ponzi Scheme [ST03] by Not Just Bikes VIDEO (Title if needed) I’ve been watching a lot of videos about transit lately (like this series by Vox) but the above video is probably the most important one you can watch. His entire Strong Towns series is great and succinctly explains why north american cities suck and keep getting worse. Vote for elected officials that push for density.
Tumblr media
What if We Had a GREAT X-Men Game? by The Cosmonaut Variety Hour VIDEO Real shift from bikes and cities but I keep thinking about this video. Speculative stuff rarely hits for me but this is really great and hits all the right notes for the series. Really wish this sorta stuff could get made.
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber (Complete) I think it was a mistake to keep the original article/essay that inspired this book at the beginning. I found the points made were clearer and more succinct in the condensed version and the book’s tone seems to waffle. There are some good ideas in here but I think it needed more time in the oven. If anything, read the article and the last chapter and I think you’d be good.
……….AUDIO……….
Tumblr media
Lofi Covers of Popular Songs (Playlist) I’ve been writing a lot lately so I haven’t been engaging with a lot of music. HOWEVER this playlist on spotify has been on in the background and offers the perfect balance for me: not distracting but engaging if I focus on it.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Mof1 Crew is currently on the run after the retiring couple they kidnapped escaped but I’m sure everything will work out just fine.
Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The group is still navigating a group of elves on the island and seeing what happens now that they’ve let their star-collecting duties slip. Big trouble. You can read about it here.
And that’s it. See you in August!
