Energy vampire Tip: 1

While draining energy from a couple (two none vampire humans) arguing in any given location. It is best to continually walk by like you are in a routine walk or pacing. This will annoy both of them making them give off both the energy of the argument and the annoyance of you repeatedly walking by.

I’ve been kicking around the idea of doing a reimagining of Warhammer 40k that was less fashy, because there’s a lot of cool ideas in there.

First thing to do would be to pare it down to a workable core for the scope of a one person project, then rebuild out from there.

The obvious place to start is the Space Marines:

Cool

 - big blue ultramarines are iconic, You could throw out 90% of the setting, but if you kept the ultramarines, it’d be recognizably 40k

 - stompy overpowered space heroes are cool. They gotta be elite badasses.

- I am in love with the idea of having all this old tech they barely understand, and having maintenance rituals that are half technical, half religious, and the ambiguity of whether the mysticism had any effect on the “machine spirit”

- purity seals are a cool visual. The religious warrior-monk angle definitely has potential. Maybe expand it beyond catholicism-lite + ultraviolence

Ehh

- the Imperium is crumbling. I need cracks. I need decay. I need government organs failing and people finding alternatives. I need possibilities other than “fascism or orbital bombardment”. Sure, the Imperium might /try/ to maintain fascism by orbital bombardment, but I want to explore how hilariously stupid of an idea that is.

- some of the misc mutations the space marines have are a little ridiculous. I know being over the top is the point, but I feel like it’d work better to be specifically over the top in one area(combat), rather than having a pile of miscellaneous little effects that are never really relevant. 

- the idea that any society could be remotely standardized across the entire galaxy is a little hard to believe, especially one that’s been in decline for literally 10 thousand years. Maybe reduce the scope, and leave large sections of the galaxy as “here be monsters”

- the God Emperor is dead. They’re worshipping a corpse. Maybe do some thinking about the philosophy there. 

To change

 - obviously the “no girls allowed” factor of the geneseed is ridiculous. However, there is something to having be pretty much sexless, so I’d say the geneseed process converts every space marine into a sort of androgynous homunculus. Maybe named characters are allowed to, like, reclaim their individuality after they rank up enough.

- Since they’re supposed to be these legendary elite angels descending from on high, I feel like they should show up less, so when they do show up, it’s a bigger impact. Maybe have the Imperial Guard and/or Sisters of Battle take their place as the “main character“ faction. Maybe combine those two into one new faction.

- basically everything related to the inquisition, imperial church, heresy and ‘purging xenos’ is literally just elaborate excuses for why there has to be fascism, so I’d either significiantly revamp all of that or cut it entirely. 

- maybe consolidate the oodles of special space marine chapters into more limited specialized groups that are more like auxiliaries to the standard marines rather than bloating out to be ten flavors of the same basic idea.

- having a bunch of superhumanly swole dudes together with poorly understood hormone enhancements has got to lead to some gay stuff happening.

Misc thoughts

- focus on the non-combat aspects as well. Do space marines do aid work? provide religious ceremonies? alms for the poor?

- I’m gonna declare that, in my 40k, there are good people, and sometimes they succeed. Cruelty and death are commonplace, but there is hope.

- boundaries are messy. There will be eldar imperial citizens, t’au chaos worshippers, necrons that just live in normal cities, chaos cults that are actually kind of nice, dark eldar that maybe have okay trade relations with humans, and more weird outliers.

Hmmm

 - if the emperor is sort of half-way a new chaos god, what if he could sort of half-way give his followers chaos mutations and daemons and stuff?

- what if the “men of iron” were still around? surely they’re baddies, right? 

-

I’m not sure whether to come at this as a fanfiction AU type thing(brighthammer anyone?), or just a “heavily inspired” setting like starcraft.
