Pazham Pori | Banana Fritters » Dassana's Veg Recipes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pazham pori recipe with step by step pics. Pazham pori also known as ethakka appam is a popular snack from Kerala made with ripe bananas. Banana slices are coated in an all-purpose flour batter and then deep fried. A tasty vegan banana fritters recipe that makes for a good tea time snack paired with a cup of hot chai or coffee.
Tumblr media
The bananas used to prepare pazham pori are nendram pazham. These variety of bananas are long, large and are firm even when ripe. They are used not only to make the famous Kerala banana chips but also these banana fritters and some more sweets. Now this Nendram pazham or ethapazham is not easily available everywhere in India or outside India. So you can use firm ripe bananas. Do not use bananas that are too ripe or very soft. In the recipe also I have used ripe bananas which are sweet and yet firm. If using nendram pazham, then use the ripe ones. However the taste of these banana fritters is awesome when made with Nendram pazham. The mushy, soft, sweet texture of the cooked bananas pairs nicely with the crispy and soft texture of the all purpose flour batter layer. Whenever my parents go to Kerala, they get nendram pazham for me. I always steam them and have plain or at times with puttu. Its only me in our family, that has a special taste for these bananas. So I only cook it for myself 🙂 My mom used to prepare these sweet banana fritters on occasion like an evening snack for us. Also during my stay in Kerala, the hotel where we lived would serve pazham pori at least twice or thrice a week in their complimentary evening snacks menu. Apart from pazham pori, there would also be Paruppu vadai, sandwich and Aloo bonda. Preparing these banana fritters are very easy. All-purpose flour is used for the batter. So do try to use organic all-purpose flour or unbleached all-purpose flour. For health reasons, you can use whole wheat flour too. Also some rice flour can be added to the batter to make the fritters crisp. Serve pazham pori hot or warm as an evening snack with chai or filter coffee. You don’t need any other accompaniment with it. Step-by-Step Guide
How to make Pazham Pori (Banana Fritters)
1. In a mixing bowl, take ½ cup all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon sugar (optional), a pinch of turmeric powder and a pinch of baking soda. You can also add 1 tablespoon of rice flour for some crispiness.
Tumblr media
2. Mix very well with a spoon or wired whisk.
Tumblr media
3. Then add water in parts. I used ⅓ cup of water. Depending on the quality of the flour, you can add less or more water. If the batter becomes thin, then add some more all-purpose flour.
Tumblr media
4. Mix to a smooth batter without any lumps.
Tumblr media
5. The batter consistency is slightly thick so that it coats the banana slices very well. Keep aside.
Tumblr media
6. Peel two large bananas or 3 medium-sized bananas.
Tumblr media
7. Then first slice them horizontally in half or quarters. Then slice each piece vertically in two equal parts.
Tumblr media
Frying pazham pori 8. Heat oil for deep frying in a pan or kadai. When the oil becomes medium hot, then the banana fritters can be fried. Dip each slice in the batter and coat it well with the batter.
Tumblr media
9. Gently place the batter coated banana slices in the medium hot oil. Fry the slices depending on the size of the kadai or pan. Take care not to overcrowd the kadai.
Tumblr media
10. When one side is cooked, then turn over gently and fry the other side.
Tumblr media
11. Fry till both sides are light golden. You don’t need to fry these fritters too much. stop once the bananas start oozing out moisture into the oil and the oil begins to splutter too much. We just need to fry till the outer coating is done. A light golden is fine.
Tumblr media
12. Remove with a slotted spoon draining extra oil in the kadai itself.
Tumblr media
13. Keep the fried banana fritters on kitchen paper towels. In the same way, fry the remaining banana slices. You may see some caramelisation happening on the remaining banana fritters. This is due to the moisture and sugars which have leeched into the oil while frying the first batch. Prepare the pazham pori in the same manner and keep them on kitchen paper towels, so that the excess oil is soaked up.
Tumblr media
14. Serve pazham pori hot as an evening snack with chai or filter coffee.

some childhood/best friend kageyama headcanons bc i feel like it
childhood friends || kageyama tobio
warnings: cursing n crackhead energy
summary: you’re the energetic affectionate best friend and kageyama just wants a break
Tumblr media
under the cut to save space!
u have known this grumpy boi since diapers
everyone finds him threatening but he's actually a huge dork with a resting bitch face and not very good communication skills
you're shorter than him
ever since the beginning of junior high you've just jumped on his back at random times
he used to fall over but now he doesn't
most of the time you just mess with his hair
"tobio-chan, you should invest in a hairbrush~!”
"shut up Y/N your hair is probably more tangled than mine"
*oFFENDED GASP*
you're one of the only people that can scold him/tell him off
when he was in his kInG oF the cOuRt days you two slightly drifted apart but then you were like "wait, i need to scold that idiot" and you did exactly that, you almost cried like a proud mother when you saw him change for the better during high school
"tobio-chan. tobio-chan. hey. hey. tobio-chan. toooobbiiiiioooo. kageyama. bakageyama. bakayama. tobiiiooo. tobio-chan. toooooo. biiiiii. oooooo—"
"whAT DO YOU WANT."
"hi." -v-
people get very confused when you randomly come up to kageyama and jump on him
people get very confused to discover that a chaotic ball of energy like you is kageyama tobio's closest friend
you know his deepest darkest secret
and by that i mean where he's ticklish
psst he's ticklish by his waist and on his neck
when he's acting all pissed off at you you just
poke a ticklish spot
and he hates it
but you have that advantage against him
"tobio-channn. you should smileeee~!"
he frowns at you
you grab his cheeks and force him to smile
in front of everyone else at the vbc, too
"see!! look at how cute you are!!!"
you're just squishing his cheeks together for fun now
everyone's trying so hard not to laugh
he just glares and grabs your wrists, pushing your hands away from his face
but he's used to it
sometimes when you're bugging him too much he'll just pick you up and plop you down somewhere else
most of the time you get back up and run back over to him to bother him some more
one time you wouldn't stop trying to tickle him so he deadass zip tied your hands
"woah this is some 50 shades of grey type shit tobio-chan" winkwonkwinkwonk
"oh my god Y/N why"
"you must be into bonda-"
"cAN YOU SHUT UP”
a common question you get asked by the vbc bois is "how is someone like you friends with kageyama?"
ur just like
"i know everything about this boi and he knows everything about me"
"i also know the size of his di–"
"wHAT THE FUCK—”
"–ctionary that he has at home. wOAHhhHh dId yOu tHInK i wAs gOnnA sAy sOMetHing dIRtYyYYyY?"
kageyama just sighs and puts his hand over your mouth "i'm sorry about her she has her mellow times i promise"
"nMFNFNNFMFNFMFNFMFN."
"i don't understand what you're trying to say but it's probably stupid"
you push his hand away "HE ALSO KNOWS MY BRA SIZ- MFFNGNNFNFNDGMFGNF<MMFN”
energetic moments aside, you and kageyama have had many sleepovers where you went from watching your favourite movies together to having deep talks to pLAToNICALLY hugging each other to sleep
he’s awkward in front of people but he actually gives nice hugs when he’s feeling not awkward
sometimes when you’re doing something like watching tv or studying he’ll randomly play with your hair
you eventually got used to it, i mean you trust him so why not let him be himself
and that was soft moments with tobio
every time you’re with him and you see oikawa you yell "OH!! IT’S!!!! IT’S.. what was his name, shittykawa?"
kageyama tries so hard to not even grin
meanwhile you’re confused because it’s a genuine question you’ve literally only heard oikawa be referred to as shittykawa so you thought that was his name
you know all the ways to make this boy laugh and his little comments he makes about hinata under his breath always make you cackle
you’re best friends with this dork and you love it
and he loves you too

The Best of Spring Anime 2018!
Tumblr media
Spring has come.
Tumblr media
Overall Best
Golden Kamuy
"Immortal" Sugimoto Saichi is a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war. Before his closest friend died, he promised to provide for his friend's wife, and believes he can do so by uncovering a story of hidden Ainu (Japanese minority) gold hidden somewhere in Hokkaido. Alongside Asirpa, an Ainu girl out for justice, they seek the treasure, survive out the wilderness, and make good food off their fresh hunts.
The series is at once exciting and brutal as Sugimoto and Asirpa rush to recover pieces of the map. Each map owner is a minor story arc unto themselves as they are all broken, bizarre, and violent people, driven by their desires and finding the frozen forests of Hokkaido the perfect place for its expression. Sugimoto and Asirpa are roughed up in terrible ways, especially the former, as each stabbing, bludgeoning, and torture bring home the point that the people we're rooting for are not superhumans and that they  tend to find themselves in over their heads.
In addition, the story is excellent representation of the Ainu people, their culture intertwining with the story and themes. As Sugimoto and Asirpa run around the island, Asirpa becomes the link between Ainu culture and the encroachment of modern Japan. It's an adventure story, assuredly, but it's also a living memory to a people fast disappearing due to time and modernity. Highly recommended.
Tumblr media
Best Drama
Gurazeni (Money Pitch)
The series examines the merciless world of data-driven Baseball from the viewpoint of Natsunosuke Bonda, a left-handed relief pitcher for the Jingu Spiders. The entire work is low-key drama, because the undercurrent of anxiety is very subtle and runs through every episode as Bonda and the pros around him realize they could very well be forced out of the profession they worked long and hard to get in.
It's a fascinating sports anime in that it doesn't rely on high emotions and heroic plays for its drama. Instead, it shows what it takes to be a professional and growing into maturity and the humility and hard work needed for the work at hand. Some may argue that Aggretsuko and Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii are supposedly accurate depictions of growing up and taking responsibility, but compared to those, the struggles present here are far more varied and focus more on the job and personal growth than relationships: Joy, sadness, and worry are expressed within timespans as short as baseball games and triumphs replaced by losses within the span of an inning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Best Comedy
Hinamatsuri
Yoshifumi Nitta is a yakuza for the Ashikawa-gumi, dealing in real estate. Everything was going well for him until a large silver egg dropped on him from out of nowhere. The egg held a girl named Hina who has powerful telekinetic powers. She decides to stay on and mooch off Nitta, much to his dismay and resentment.
The fantastic thing about this comedy is that the world of Nitta was already weird before Hina came into the picture. This is a world where school-age girls become bartenders serving up drinks better than the best bartenders of Ginza, where the yakuza get their lawyer to write up a speech for a student council election and where everyone yells the same words with the same squeaky intonation when they're hurt. It's cleverly written because the stories rarely ever depend on Hina's telekinesis; it plays on the contrasting expectations people have of each other when they interact and the escalation that happens as they go along with the flow of the story, too freaked out to have the wherewithal to clarify and too curious to stop now.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mention
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online
Kohiruimaki Karen dislikes the fact that she's abnormally tall for a girl. On the suggestion of a friend, she decides to deal with this issue by joining an online virtual reality game called Gun Gale Online. There, she gets to play an avatar with her ideal body form: a short, petite girl wielding a short, petite, weapon, the FN P90. She expresses a unique affinity for the game, being well known in the community for being a skillful player-killer.
Except for a few episodes which act as cool-down between action set-pieces, the bulk is exceptionally entertaining tactical action. The characters ascertain the distance of hostiles and weapon type by their sound, they plan and adapt depending on their location and remaining resources, and they intelligently use and abuse the rules set by the game to get ahead of the competition. Victory isn't achieved by cutesy platitudes and super-cool moves, but by cleverness, thoughtfulness, and a bloodthirsty desire to win.
As divisive as Sword Art Online is, you can dive right in without any knowledge of the original series. Whereas SAO was epic(relatively speaking) in its scope of trying to survive alongside 10,000 other people trapped in a game world, the story here is much more personal, which starts with Karen working out her height issues and ends with her trying to save one single life.
Tumblr media
Best Fantasy/ Sci-Fi
Hisone to Masotan
Amakasu Hisone had sleepwalked through most of her life, hoping to someday be able to do something that nobody else can. She ends up in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force with a desk job until one day, she becomes chosen to become a dragon's pilot.
In terms of story and tone, it has a definite point where it can be halved. The change isn't jarring, but you're left to wonder why things weren't foreshadowed well enough. The first half is told as slice of life and magical realism, as Amakasu opens up to her destiny and the daily work of becoming closer to her dragon, Masotan, dealing with people with a stake in the fulfillment of her duties, and her tendency to speak without tact which tends to offend people.
The second half kicks it up a gear and a half as it moves on to folklore, mysticism, and spirituality, as the purpose of the dragons is revealed, tragedy is met, and Amakasu is forced to wake up in service to her future self and the future of Japan. It's not very exciting action-wise (except until the last episodes), but it is very moving, as Amakasu shows a willingness to change, but with a tendency to be ignorant about what to change in the first place. She is groggy, stumbling to growth, challenge, and finally, love.
Tumblr media
Best Cute Girl Anime
Comic Girls
Kaoruko Moeta is in a creative slump. Her editor sees potential in this 4-panel comic artist, so she sends Moeta to a dormitory in the company of other Manga artists in the hopes of honing her storytelling and helping her overcome her shyness.
As with most Cute Girls Doing Cute Things (CGDCT) anime, the tone is cozy, the conflicts light and minor and the plotting is thin, so most of the weight is carried by the strength of the characters and the little idiosyncrasies they exhibit that prevent them from becoming too stereotypical.
Is this case, what the characters write and draw often reflects their character. One creates a serialized shonen manga, so she is driven, masculine, and unable to get into girlish things. Another creates teens love manga and erotica so she is elegant, the straight man, and deeply embarrassed for herself. The third writes shonen manga so she fashionable, energetic, and drawn to strong feelings. Moeta writes comedy, and is often the punchline for the episode's plots: Her story pitches keep getting rejected, she is shy and deeply self-deprecating and for some reason, enjoys being doted on by older, mature women.
As someone who draws and writes, I may be a little biased, but I do appreciate anime that explores the lives of creatives (Barakamon and Sore ga Seiyuu! come to mind) and the anime does a decent job of exploring the madness of creation with a dash of cuteness. There is even a layer of bittersweetness via a second set of characters that used to create manga but had to leave it because of real life. A professional manga career may be out of the question, but they're living lives driven by creating and creativity as a little reward for their daring.
Tumblr media
Best Girl
Asirpa, Golden Kamuy
Born of the Ainu, and experienced in the hunt, Asirpa is Sugimoto's partner as they run around Hokkaido collecting the maps to a secret hoard of gold that was stolen from the Ainu. Growing up with her father in the wilderness, she never stayed with her family, preferring to stay out for long swathes of time, hunting animals, and providing for her tribe in her own way.
The cruelty of the wilderness and nature hardened her by having her aware of the constant possibility of losing the people and things she cares about. She puts up a front when she needs to, but drops it when Sugimoto and family offer their hand in kindness.
With a fine hunt, knowledge that she is loved, and good food, the deep part of her soul bubbles out and rounds out a strong and compelling character.

Best OP
Rie Murakawa – Distance, Hinamatsuri
TV size - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St2HefvqnxY
Full size - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riX7EKXSoBQ
If you've ever seen the intro to Puella Magi Magoka Magica, you can tell how extremely deceptive it was by using bright colors, quirkiness, and a cheerful song to hide an anime that explores magical girls as torment and psychological horror. The opening to Hinamtusuri is also extremely deceptive, however, with the intent of comedy, because as straight-faced as the opening song is about yearning and memories, the drama is never as serious the opening makes it out to be. Sure, you'd see the characters staring out with uncertainty and three consecutive scenes of characters crying, but the stories these scenes talk place are played out for laughs. The opening gains even more potency a few episodes in as you get a taste for the series' style and you begin to realize how effective the opening is at being utterly ridiculous.

Best ED
D-Pai – Le Temps de la Rentrée (cover of France Gall's original), Hisone to Masotan
D-Pai version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgKs3F2NB9w
France Gall original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBi_Dr_QdaI
The visuals are very simple on this one, which are counted to three:
The female leads of Hisone to Masotan dancing about as if they were still in High School and things were still awkward with the opposite sex.
Quick close up rotations of the various airplanes that the dragons take shape.
Extreme closeups of each female lead during the bridges of the song.
Otherwise I'm picking this one because of the voice actor's perfect rendition of Le Temps de la Rentrée by France Gall. It's unique joy to hear a French song in an anime. It sets them apart from the rest, especially if it is as jazzy and ebullient as this one.

5 Famous Street Eateries of Chennai
Tumblr media
Anyone part of Chennai must have tried these famous traditional eateries. It doesn't matter whether they are residents or a traveler. Everyone must have or should try these.
It is unimaginable to avoid these traditional eateries of Chennai. I won't say Chennai has a wide variety of eateries to enjoy your evening. But it has a pretty decent number of eateries.
You can list the most common or traditional eateries on your one hand. But, there are a few more famous protein-rich eateries out there. I will explain them in the next post.
Vengaya Bonda
Vazhakkai Bajji
Milagai Bajji
Parupu Vadai or Masal Vadai
Medhu Vadai
Vengaya Bonda
One of the most common eateries we can get in Chennai. You can place your order to enjoy these Vengaya Bonda in either a roadside tea stall or in an upscale restaurant. Usually, the size of Vengaya Bonda varies.
The Vengaya Bonda is like a cricket ball or a baseball. Anyone can hold it in their fist. But, its size will vary if you order Vengaya Bonda in an Upscale Restaurant.
During the evening time, most of the tea stalls will get ready to prepare hot Vengaya Bonda and other eateries. The Vengaya Bonda is made of sliced onion mixed with the spicy batter.
You should try Vengaya Bonda when it is hot with tomato or coconut chutney. Most of the tea stalls serve it that way. Few upscale restaurants might provide you with sauce or ketchup.
Vazhakkai Bajji
If you are a fan of watching culinary skills, this could be the one for you. The art of preparing Vazhakkai Bajji is something fantastic process, starting with slicing a raw banana.
Then we will dip the sliced Vazhakkai or raw banana in a spicy batter made with chickpea flour. Meanwhile, the hot pan filled with groundnut oil will be ready to fry the raw banana dipped in batter.
The sound when the Vazhakkai is put into the hot pan will make you feel mouthwatering. Like Vengaya Bonda, Vazhakkai Bajji is also tasted when hot, along with coconut or tomato chutney.
Milagai Bajji
Probably the spiciest eatery on this list. The Milagai Bajji is made with green chili. It is not the green chili we use for our regular cooking. There is a separate chili used for preparing Milagai Bajji.
Besides the Gree Chili, the entire process is the same as Vazhakkai Bajji. Instead, the chilis are not sliced into pieces, but they will be cut on one side, or sometimes, they dip the chilis without cutting.
The final product is so delicious and yummy. Milagai Bajji is my favorite eaterie on Chennai street. The spiciness it offers will make me go crazy. Like other eateries, Milagai Bajji is also tasted when it is hot and with coconut or tomato chutney.
Masal Vadi or Parupu Vadai
It is my all-time favorite eaterie in the Chennai streets. No matter where you are in Chennai, you can get one Masal vadai in any Chennai tea shop. It is a little hard on the outside, and inside it has protein-rich ingredients.
If you feel a little hungry, get one Masal Vadai and fulfill your hunger. Almost all tea stalls will have these Masal Vadai; the best part is they can be eaten when it is hot and cold.
The ingredients have protein-rich elements. These are made with chana dal. Then the spice, onion & herbs are added to the dough. Then, using hands, the dough is made in the shape of a disc and deep fry it.
It doesn't require any additional chutney to taste. Most Chennai people dream of tasting masala vadai and tea during a mesmerizing rainfall. You should try it if you get a chance, especially when it rains.
Medhu Vadai
It is also called Ulundhu Vadai, prepared by soaking dal and grinding it until we get the batter form. While preparing the batter, will add a sufficient amount of salt.
Then fry the batter by putting a hole in between like a donut. Once fried, the outer layer will be stiff, but the inner portion will be soft. You can also add coriander or mint leaf if you prepare it home.
Making Medhu Vadai seems a little tiresome but is considered the most protein-rich eateries on the list. No ingredients other than Dal or Ulundu (Tamil) are used to prepare it.

Comforting Pop-In-The-Mouth Snacks That Go Well With Pineapple Relish
The small popping bites straight out of the oven or fryer are something no one can resist. With their crispy outer and soft, melt-in-the-mouth insides, bite sized snacks are a great hit for parties and casual snacking times too. If you are someone who enjoys the delightfully sweet and spicy flavours of a pineapple and jalapeno relish, then here are some interesting snack ideas that you can use for your next bingeing party:
1. Mysore bonda: The instant Mysore bonda, a staple of South India, is best enjoyed piping hot! It has a soft texture that makes it quite popular and it can be made with minimal waiting. Serve it with the pineapple relish for an interesting burst of flavours.
2. Hush puppies: A classic American dish, tater tots are traditionally made with cornmeal but you can swap the cornmeal for regular flour and pureed corn kernels. Serve them piping hot with the pineapple jalapeno relish for an interesting and exotic snack.
3. Mini pretzels: Perhaps one of the most popular bar and finger foods, mini pretzels are a great choice for some light snacking before a meal. Serve them with the pineapple jalapeno dip and tingle your taste buds when you eat them the next time. Look for the plain ones or even the sesame ones which have that added crunch and nuttiness from the sesame seeds.
4. Tater tots: A variation on the classic French fires, tater tots are potato balls that are fried with a crumbed exterior for a crisp on the outside and mushy soft on the inside. A great food for kids, tater tots can be served with the sweet and spicy pineapple jalapeno relish when setting up a platter for game or movie night for a larger crowd.
5. Zucchini fritters: If you like the soft texture of zucchini, then the fritters made with them will be a great snack for you. The crispy light batter fried zucchini is a treat that is best enjoyed with the pineapple relish. Moreover, you can add to your enjoyment with the seasonal zucchini flowers fried in batter and serve with the relish too.
If you are looking for that perfect relish to serve with your foods, then try the pineapple jalapeno relish from Earthmade Organix that brings the refreshing combination without any harmful chemical additives.

Shoes and clothes in Ethiopia: why consumers prefer ‘old and trendy’ over ‘new but fake’
With a population of more than 100 million people, Ethiopia has a large domestic market. Because of the poor state of the economy (per capita income of $790), Ethiopia's per capita expenditure on clothes and shoes is low in comparison with countries that have a smaller population size. Even then, for the majority of Ethiopian households in the countryside and small towns, expenditure on clothing and shoes rank as the most important non-food expenses.
Ethiopia has recently emerged as an important source of clothes and shoes for global brands like H&M, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. Ethiopia’s new apparel industries, which feed the lucrative global textile supply chain are not allowed to sell their products to the local market. The Ethiopian government seeks to use the textile and apparel industry to generate foreign exchange and jobs.
Imports cover about 79 % of the domestic market for clothes and 56 % for shoes according to data by the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce. Accordingly, clothes and shoes are among the top ten of Ethiopia's (official) imports. Due to high import tariffs and other difficulties, a significant portion of clothes and shoes are imported illicitly. In one estimate, about 48 percent of textiles and apparels imported into Ethiopia come through illicit channels.
Even though it is illegal to import SHC and shoes into Ethiopia, trading in these commodities has been a thriving business. SHC and shoes markets are ubiquitous in Ethiopian cities and towns. Because of their low price and better quality in comparison to imported and locally produced new clothes, SHC and shoes continue to attract a large number of buyers. Young consumers whom we interviewed in Jigjiga jovially explained why they prefer to buy SHC and shoes instead of new ones. They said that in comparison to new imitation clothes and shoes, SHC and shoes were trendy and durable. They argued that new clothes sourced from China and other Asian countries were of lower quality and did not provide enough choice – 'wearing them is like wearing uniforms', an interlocutor pointed out.
Recently, trading in used shoes has become more lucrative than trading in SHC. More and more consumers are buying second hand shoes as the market offers original brands like Nike, Reebok, Adidas or Puma. More often than not second hand shoes in good condition are a lot more expensive than new shoes that imitate global brands.
One of the major gateways for second hand clothes and shoes is the Ethio-Somaliland corridor. These commodities largely originate from the US and Europe and transit through Dubai ports. From Dubai they are brought to Berbera port by Somaliland traders. According to traders in Jigiga, SHC are disaggregated at the point of origin into different kinds such as t-shirts, trousers, shirts, suits and children and women clothes and wrapped separately into different bundles, known in Amharic as bonda. Shoes are also wrapped in separate bundles.

©  Asnake Kefale (2019)
Tog Wajaale, the main trading hub for the trans-border trade between Ethiopia and Somaliland also serves as a major point of transit for SHC and shoes in the corridor. There are two major transport routes that take commodities to different towns in Eastern Ethiopia and further north to the central parts of Ethiopia. The first and major route is the Jigjiga route. The second one connects Tog Wajaale to the ancient city of Harar through Chinaksen bypassing Jigjiga. This route gained in importance in recent years, in particular after 2015 when security deteriorated as a result of the Somali-Oromo conflict. While the Jigjiga route – which is discussed in this blog – is dominated by Somali traders, the Chinaksen route is in the hands of Oromo traders.
Used clothes and shoes are transported in different ways to Jigjiga from Tog Wajaale. Small traders, usually women, buy small quantities of used clothes and shoes from retailers in the Tog Wajaale market. They then travel by bus or minibus to Jigjiga where they distribute the goods to their clients. They employ different tricks to bypass customs inspection, for example they distribute clothes and shoes among cooperative passengers. Once they arrive in Jigjiga, the traders supply small retailers in the town. Small scale traders diversity the commodities they bring to Jigjiga in order to minimize the risk of getting bankrupt in the event of confiscation of their merchandize. For instance they buy food items like cooking oil, pasta, and sugar, which customs officers usually do not confiscate.
A larger portion of SHC and shoes are transported from Tog Wajaale as bundles by medium sized trucks, predominantly by ISUZU trucks. This option is used by medium and large scale Somali traders. According to informants, traders write their names on the bundle of SHC and Shoes and pay in advance for transport costs. Often a transport operator collects a range of different goods, including SHC and shoes, and has them loaded onto their trucks. These transactions are all based on trust and traders admit that there is always a risk of confiscation. Transporters mostly use the asphalt road. They facilitate the passage of goods by transporting the merchandize at times when customs inspections are more lax or by ‘collaborating’ with officials. In some cases they use bush roads to circumvent customs checkpoints. Each of the transporters has his stores in Jigjiga and when the merchandize arrives in the stores, they inform the traders, inviting them to collect their goods.
The bundles are then taken to different stores in town. Cloth bundles are usually opened on Fridays and Saturdays as these are important market days. Shoe bundles are opened immediately after their arrival. When the bundles are opened the clothes and shoes are graded on the basis of their quality. Retailers tailor, wash and iron textiles to add value to them. Shoes are also washed. There are hundreds of stores in Jigjiga where SHC and shoes are sold. These stores are found in the central market area, the old and new Taiwan markets. There is also a large number of traders who hawk the town. Most of the traders in the main market and the old Taiwan are men while female traders dominate Jigjiga’s new Taiwan market.
A significant portion of SHC and shoes are sent from Jigjiga to the central parts of the country including Addis Ababa. Small traders from Addis Ababa buy smaller quantities of shoes and clothes and then transport them by public transport. A recent development in the trading of second hand quality brand shoes is the usage of scheduled Ethiopian Airlines flights from Jigjiga to Addis Ababa. Traders buy good condition brand shoes like Nike, Adidas, Reebok and others and fly them back to Addis Ababa. One reason why air transport is attractive is that customs inspections at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport are less rigorous compared to custom checkpoints along the road.
The shoes brought to Addis Ababa are sold at a considerably higher price than newly imported shoes that are counterfeited. Many of the shops specializing in the supply of second hand shoes brand themselves as 'Torshin shoe stores’, adulterating Adidas Torsion System shoe series.
In sum, although the Ethiopian government bans the trade of used clothes and shoes, it is a thriving business that relies on cross-border transporting. It provides jobs to tens of thousands of people across the country as well as options for consumers. Like other commodities traded in the corridor, for instance electronic goods, the trade in used clothes and shoes happens through the collaboration of various actors including traders, transporters and public officials.
This field report was written by Asnake Kefale, associate professor at Addis Ababa University’s Department of Political Science and International Relations. His research team conducted preliminary fieldwork including key informant interviews on cross-border trading in second hand clothing and shoes in the Ethio-Somaliland corridor in October 2019.

Day 104 - Santa Marta to Paso del Mango
1. I woke up fairly early and mucked around. I had pizza for dinner the night before so I got it for breakfast as well. Then I went to the supermarket down the road for a water bottle plus a baby mango. There are these baby sugar mangos you get here, like the size of a child fist and so yum. As I was almost back I heard my name being called.
2. Briar had driven past as I'd walked. It was so fun saying hi to here again. First time (and probably only) in my travels I would see someone from home and it all worked together by fluke. She had planned to be in Peru but after doing South Colombia she realised she really wanted to do north as well so she got flights return from Peru so she would get 10 days. She had thought I would be gone from the north by the time she got here but I've been traveling so slow we had 3 days crossover. It worked out that she liked what I had planned for my last few days so it was perfect. Before heading off we went to the mall so she could have breakfast (she had been awake since 4am with flights) and also get a feel for the area. We both got water as well.
3. Eventually we went to the main road and waved down a bus to Bonda. Tiny little local busses. The ride was just 15 minutes or so. Then in Bonda we needed to catch a mototaxi for a 30 minute ride. Only the motors and 4WDs can make it to Finca Carpe Diem as the road was pretty rough. Hostel instructions were to go to the police station so we did this then talked to a guy. Two motorbikes were arranged and on we hopped. 30 minutes on a rough motorbike ride is a long time! A sore bum later we arrived at the hostel.
4. The hostel is really nice but it is funny what a few filters or lighting can do to make it look SO FANCY! We were sent to our room which we got to ourself as it appears no other backpackers were staying (just people in privates). Then we went to the swimming pool where we parked ourselves for the rest of the day. Continuing that holiday life it appears.
5. In between the swimming, reading and lazing there was a lot of eating. All the food here is natural and largely from the Finca. For the afternoon we ate all the starters and for dinner we both had the steak. I however (despite what this might read like) have not been eating big meals since entering Colombia. All of a sudden I felt so ill and in pain from eating too much. Even though it wouldn't be what you'd consider a lot. So I just had to watch Briar eat her ice cream while I was in a mild amount of pain. It then turned into an early night as I felt sorry for myself for eating too much. How can things so good cause so much pain!!

Basics Of Computers
Sanath Kumar Technical Tutorials: Basics Of Computers by Sanath Kumar Bonda     Basics Of Computers by Sanath Kumar Bonda
A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You may already know that you can use a computer to type documents, send email, play games, and browse the Web. You can also use it to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos.
Hardware vs. software
Before we talk about different types of computers, let's talk about two things all computers have in common: hardware and software.
Hardware is any part of your computer that has a physical structure, such as the keyboard or mouse. It also includes all of the computer's internal parts, which you can see in the image below.
Software is any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do and how to do it. Examples of software include web browsers, games, and word processors. Below, you can see an image of Microsoft PowerPoint, which is used to create presentations.
Everything you do on your computer will rely on both hardware and software. For example, right now you may be viewing this lesson in a web browser (software) and using your mouse (hardware) to click from page to page. As you learn about different types of computers, ask yourself about the differences in their hardware. As you progress through this tutorial, you'll see that different types of computers also often use different types of software. What are the different types of computers? When most people hear the word computer, they think of a personal computer such as a desktop or laptop. However, computers come in many shapes and sizes, and they perform many different functions in our daily lives. When you withdraw cash from an ATM, scan groceries at the store, or use a calculator, you're using a type of computer.Desktop computers
Many people use desktop computers at work, home, and school. Desktop computers are designed to be placed on a desk, and they're typically made up of a few different parts, including the computer case, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.Laptop computers
The second type of computer you may be familiar with is a laptop computer, commonly called a laptop. Laptops are battery-powered computers that are more portable than desktops, allowing you to use them almost anywhere.Tablet computers
Tablet computers—or tablets—are handheld computers that are even more portable than laptops. Instead of a keyboard and mouse, tablets use a touch-sensitive screenfor typing and navigation. The iPad is an example of a tablet.Servers
A server is a computer that serves up information to other computers on a network. For example, whenever you use the Internet, you're looking at something that's stored on a server. Many businesses also use local file servers to store and share files internally.Other types of computersMany of today's electronics are basically specialized computers, though we don't always think of them that way. Here are a few common examples.
Smartphones: Many cell phones can do a lot of things computers can do, including browsing the Internet and playing games. They are often called smartphones.
Wearables: Wearable technology is a general term for a group of devices—including fitness trackers and smartwatches—that are designed to be worn throughout the day. These devices are often called wearables for short.
Game consoles: A game console is a specialized type of computer that is used for playing video games on your TV.
TVs: Many TVs now include applications—or apps—that let you access various types of online content. For example, you can stream video from the Internet directly onto your TV.
PCs and MacsPersonal computers come in two main styles: PC and Mac. Both are fully functional, but they have a different look and feel, and many people prefer one or the other.PCs
This type of computer began with the original IBM PC that was introduced in 1981. Other companies began creating similar computers, which were called IBM PC Compatible (often shortened to PC). Today, this is the most common type of personal computer, and it typically includes the Microsoft Windows operating system.Macs
The Macintosh computer was introduced in 1984, and it was the first widely sold personal computer with a graphical user interface, or GUI (pronounced gooey). All Macs are made by one company (Apple), and they almost always use the Mac OS Xoperating system.

Favorite Fictional Character(s): Severus Snape, my favorite sinnomon roll. Sherlock, i can relate to him on an emotional level aka I lack one. Lemongrab, he is the only character I can't figure out I would really love to study him but he's hilarious in his ways and my favorite thing about Adventure Time. The Doctor, what’s not to love. Lucifer and Crowley, the kings of my existence.
Number Of Blankets I Sleep With: Usually just one, if i’m super cold or needing some cuddles i’ll grab one or two more and just bury myself under them.

When Was This Blog Created: About two years ago
Current Number Of Followers: I think like 800 and something
When Did Your Blog Reach Its Peak?: Oh Glob i hope it hasn’t yet! I think maybe when i started a fanfic series called I Owe You One. I posted majority of it almost a year ago. It seemed to take with a lot of people, definitely one of my more popular postings, and it might have been my proudest. Regrettably i never did finish it. Despite the handful of messages requesting i do so and my personal love and ties with the series i kind of hit a wall. I’ve recently tried picking it back up but being completely honest i might have lost some motivation; too much time might have passed for me to try and continue but i’ll still try to finish what i started. I had high hopes for it and plenty of material mapped out, i’d hate to see it all go to waste.
What Made You Decide To Make A Tumblr?: At first i just wanted to read Supernatural Fanfiction because up until two years ago i didn’t even know fanfiction existed. I loved to write (i still have a leaning tower of journals filled cover to cover) and fell in love with the stories i found. I was relieved to know that other people put real thought into scenarios and situations that could happen in the Supernatural universe and also inspired that they actually did something about it. The show casts such a large shadow and i think a nice sized portion of it has yet to be explored on the screen. To me fanfiction is like (an) unexplored episode(s) of Supernatural that we’ll probably never get to see on screen. Yet it’s more than real here and that’s good enough for me. I jumped into the madness that is Tumblr right away and have been merrily lost ever since.
