Redesign Judge Examples

Heyo, let's get into a couple examples this week. I wanted to focus on the non-legendary side of things, but we couldn't help but sneak in a cool card from @stormtide-leviathan. @mistershinyobject brought some terror with the conquerors, and I made me a little uncommon to round things out.

- Abound

It was actually @gollumni who brought up Alara this week and not me, I swear. All the same, I wanted a color pair not of these colors to round things out, and thought of the mechanical intersection. Immediately this came to me, because a variety of powerful tokens can make the early game feel much fairer, and everyone loves some extra card draw. Some players running more creature-based strategies with auras and equipment might like having an evasive token if you got that, so populate carefully!

For art direction, I'm imagining an abstract Nayan elf, perhaps the same one as depicted in Keeper of Progenitus, waving a staff over rippling roots and leaves as a variety of Alara's tokens follow their wake. Mood: there is so much more to this world than any individual can know.

- Conquerors' Terror

Black's various nonblack destruction spells have never been so mean. We were all enamored with how to work the numbers here, but this card is a one/two color blowout in limited for sure. If you're running a constructed monoblack deck, you'll have an awesome time, but even with two colors there's a non-zero chance you can hit something. And it even hits multicolored creatures if at least one color isn't shared!

We didn't discuss art direction as much for this, but I imagine maybe a legion of Kaldheim demon berserkers standing in formation over a ruined battlefield under a bloody sky. Alternatively, the original direction was more of an executorial thing, so a throne room with 2-3 rulers staring down at a hapless victim may be fun too!

- Temmet, Vizier of Bolas

This one I just wanted to include because it was good. Grixis Zombies isn't anything new, but having Temmet care about tokens considering his fate and his card... It feels like Amonkhet, it's tragic in a way without being overbearing, it's got lots of cool builds to go with it, it encourages aggression—and so on and so forth. It's not hard to imagine a Lazotep'd Temmet standing at the helm of his army as well either.

The thing to keep in mind is that a good Commander design is specific enough that you understand its purpose, but broad enough to think: what can I brew with this card that would fit this purpose? How much fun can I have here with the other tools from Magic's history?

Hopefully these give you an picture of the kind of cards we're looking for! Jump start some ideas and have fun submitting.

Agros’ fingers danced across the keyboard as he typed. It filled the air around him with a gentle but incessant clicking of keys. His void was dark, the only light illuminating the space coming from the glare of his computer screen.

The hour was late and Argos really had meant to head to bed already… he had just been struck with too many brilliant ideas. He and Mr Plant had enjoyed such a wonderful day together hiking through one of the snowier voids, all bundled up in winter coats and searching out some new plants to add to Agros’ collection!

Or, rather; Argos had become all bundled up and cosy after Mr Plant had seen him shivering and shucked his own coat to wrap him up in. The fabric of it was thick and flesh-warm and Argos had to fight his every instinct to bury his face in the mass of it and just enjoy the smell of him. It was so big on him too! Practically drowning him since it’s usual owner was so much taller than Argos.

That coat wouldn’t be finding it’s way back to Mr Plant if Argos had anything to say about it! He just missed Mr Plant so much in the hours they were apart, so he needed it. Really, he did! So now he will be keeping it, safely tucked in the cupboard where he moved his shrine to, to snuggle up in when he needs its comfort.

But just because Argos knew he would never be returning the coat to it’s rightful owner didn’t mean that he hadn’t thought about using its return as an excuse to visit Mr Plant.

What would Mr Plant think of that? Would he think Argos was just so helpful and sweet? Maybe he’d hug Argos for the very first time!

All the possibilities had swirled in Argos’ mind until he just couldn’t take it anymore and had thrown himself out of bed. The computer had powered up quickly enough, flooding his room with brightness and possibilities as he opened up a document to start writing out his wildest fantasies…

This wasn’t the first time Argos had written out his daydreams about himself and his beloved Mr Plant, and it surely wouldn’t be the last! In fact, he even had some of the shorter ones printed out and tacked up alongside his hidden photos of Mr Plant.

A manic grin curled across his face as he typed and typed, so enthralled in his own fantasy that he didn’t even notice that someone had entered his void until a finger tapped his shoulder.

“Gah!” Argos cried, whirling around in his seat. “M- Mr Plant! What are— What are you doing here?”

Mr Plant didn’t answer. He only turned his head between Argos and his computer screen, scrutinising the words open for the world to see.

Argos squeaked in dismay, trying in vain to cover the screen with his too-small hands.

“I wasn’t writing fanfiction about us!” he rambled, voice high and panicked. “I just— I just—”

Mr Plant quieted him with a slow pat to the top of his head. When Argos responded by staring up at him in cautious confusion, Mr Plant pulled a notebook out from his pocket and flipped it open, offering a page for Agros’ inspection.

He took the notebook slowly, almost reverently, and set himself to deciphering Mr Plant’s familiar scrawl. When he realised what it was, he let out a small gasp.

“Mr Plant! You write about us, too?”

Mr Plant said nothing.

“This is really good. You should share this?” When Mr Plant just shrugged, Agros continued on. “No, really. Look, there’s a TWOMP event running where you can share your writing. All we need to do is type this up and then post it on tumblr with the event tags!”

Mr Plant allowed Argos to settle in and prepare his work for posting, watching him with a fond gaze. He didn’t particularly care for sharing his work, but he would let Argos if he really wanted.

Once Argos had typed Mr Plants work into a tumblr post, using both the event tag and @ ing the blog (though, he really only had to do one or the other) he smiled up at him.

“Do you want to see mine?” he asked, somewhere between shy and excited to be sharing his writing.

Mr Plant nodded and settled in for a night of reading Argos’ writing, just happy to be spending time with him.

Hey, folks. Let's look a couple approaches to this week's contest!

@loreholdlesbian graced me with this Bantian benediction. Angel of the Shardic Empire has a lot of implications about the mechanics of this set:

Ability counters may or may not be present, and we're getting a new kind in the form of exalted counters; exalted, then, is probably gonna be back in the set!

Converge is working as flavorful glue here as well as a mechanical highlight. Presumably, all shards/factions are going to have access to converge in their own unique ways. This rewards multicolor deckbuilding.

And at the same time, the muticolor theme isn't going to be about permanents as much as it is exploratory deckbuilding through spells, mana bases, etc. In the same way that Alara cared about general multicolor, we're back to a similar kind of base without going as hog-wild as Alara Reborn.

As a rare as well, this is a top-end limited all-star for sure. Swinging for 4-8 damage in the air the turn after this comes out is no joke, and you can hold it back to spread out your damage elsewhere. Presumably there are gonna be a few other fliers, so we have that going for us as well. Bant-themed aggro!

The flavorful aspect of this card can be found in its dedication to rigidity despite the Conflux. The angels of Bant are eschewing vulnerability or exploration and, at least on this card, the determination to keep the hierarchy is important. From chaos, to order. From Conflux, to empire. Lorehold mentioned a slight antagonism to this angle, and I can buy it. I don't think this would be a strict villain-hero dichotomy throughout Alara in the same sense; there are good actions and bad actions, sure, dangers and survival, but everyone's trying in their own ways. Some (like Sedris) are definitely a little more on the villainous side, but it ain't great to be of a lowly caste in Bant either.

This morning, I had a few random ideas, but I wanted to share one more nostalgic/micro-view of a planar possibility. I don't know if this would necessarily be a winning kind of card, but it's a part of the limited exploration that might help some folks.

Mechanically, it's a removal spell for small things that then becomes a combat boost later in the game with aggressive possibilities. In retrospect, I might even have given it flying and deathtouch for that much mana—no, wait! Oh, that's fun. Okay, so, now I'm imagining deathtouch and menace, as a throwback to Kederekt Creeper. Ah well, too late in the day now. But regardless, that's one aspect: a common cycle (like the common cycle of spells from original ALA that gave benefits to massive color-themed cycling) of spells with minor boosts later in the game post-exile.

I suppose I was more looking to the flavor side of it all—because fleshcrafting doesn't stop just because worlds collide. The wizards and humans of Grixis have to rely on some smarts and scavenging in order to retain their power. Sedris made for himself a wicked empire, no doubt, but these living are indeed living. Mostly. Somewhat. Who's to say when and where it's safe to go out? Zombies are a hot commodity.

This is my favorite Zombie token of all time (in the link). It's horrific, it's experimental, it's imaginative, and it shows what one can do with the craft. What if the muscles underneath brought out the instincts of those from whom the flesh was taken? Not everyone can reanimate a dragon, but picking up new ways to eat and scavenge... I suppose that I wanted to show the ways, just like Lorehold, that reactions to change are different. These cards speak to a choice of inhabitants: "The world has changed, but I will spread my cause out to it" vs. "The world has changed, but I'll change with it here" deal.

i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good
