Out to Lunch, Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra (2005)
To cover one of history’s greatest jazz works in its entirety is bold, but to do what Otomo Yoshihide did here – to attempt (and arguably succeed in) building a record of equal stature, to use one tectonic record to inspire another - doesn’t just take bravery. It takes genius.

Sun Ra – Strange Celestial Road
Sun Ra – Strange Celestial Road
USA, 1980, avant-garde jazz / jazz-funk / jazz fusion / experimental big band
It’s not enough that Side A has all that cozy jazz fusion sound I love, but it’s also got some unexpected experimental big band moments. Head-shaking funk. But then Side B throws a curveball with some deliberately off-key and off-kilter vocals, slapped together to maintain that looseness which is the hallmark of this…

19. Fire! Orchestra | Echoes

Witchy Activities and the Maple Death, Monika Roscher Bigband (2023)
I had not heard this album before and yet I also had; bits of post rock and prog rock and big band and jaunty pop and cross-genre fusion wrapped in a very accessible and frankly unstirring package. Contemporary ‘experimental’ music at its most tired.
Pick: ‘A Taste of the Apocalypse’

Charlie Haden – Liberation Music Orchestra
Charlie Haden – Liberation Music Orchestra
USA, 1970, experimental big band / free jazz
On Haden’s first album as a band leader, Haden has some pretty eclectic song picks: three traditional Spanish songs, something from Ornette Coleman, and three pieces from one of my favorite jazz artists, Carla Bley. This makes my heart happy. I guess a couple of these tracks are political responses to the happenings of late 60s USA. Track A2, the one…

38. Monika Roscher Bigband | Witchy Activities and the Maple Death
🇩🇪 Allemagne | Zenna Records | 64 minutes | 15 morceaux

it's insane and infuriating to me when people ask for alternatives to daughters and people only recommend really standard hardcore punk or whatever that just doesn't meet the need. the pull of ywgwyw is literally the math, the force and momentum that makes you feel like you're having a heart attack
