Experimental Project: BANG BOOM SNAP 

Project Rational: Bang Boom Snap is a variety of four mystery cracker snaps that are indivually packaged. Each contain the spectrum of something. I wanted to focus on two aspects of the word diapason; burst of sound and the spectrum of something. In this edition of Bang Boom Snap Mystery Cracker Snaps: each cracker snap includes a mini zine and colour gradient poster, the series of posters create the entire colour spectrum. 

Materials: paper, snap sound makers, felt smiley confetti, plastic bags

EVALUATION OF EXPERIMENTAL FILM

Overall, looking back at my experimental film I believe that it has met the criteria which was outlined by the brief. One of the main ways I experimented in making this film is that I used footage recorded from video games. This was completely new to me and I had never tried anything like it before. It was sometimes challenging to get the right kind of gameplay that would match my film.

The feedback that I have received for my film has been extremely positive and I have been told that it is a strong piece. From the critique on Thursday the class told me that they really liked the use of a tracking dolly. This added a cinematic feel to the film and without it my shots may not have been as successful. The class also gave me feedback on the change of tone half way through. They told me that they liked how it changed from a poem to music and that the second half of the film was based more on the violence and damaging aspects of video games on its users. The mention of telepresence in the poem was also mentioned as a strength as it directly linked to the theme of my film which was that due to virtual reality becoming so lifelike, the users may start to become confused with what is real and what is virtual. Finally, I was also told that the final shot used was very effective and well done as it clearly displayed someone coming out of virtual reality and into real life.

However, I was also given feedback on what the class felt could have been improved on my film. One aspect that could be improved is the lengths of some shots. Some were too long and could benefit by being shorter. This would quicken the pace of my film and reduce the chance of my audience getting bored. I also feel that the voice over could have been improved and begin at a different point. This is because it begins rather suddenly and I feel it would be better gradually building up.

I feel that this film has pushed my filmmaking into the direction of experimental films. I really enjoyed making this film and the freedom that I had to create it.  I also really enjoyed mixing together real life footage and that from video games. Working by myself was tough but also very enjoyable at the same time. It meant that I had to book and look after all of the equipment needed but working by myself meant that I could really take care of this film and express all of my ideas.

Working on this film has improved upon what I believe to be two of my weak points in filmmaking. This is sound and colour correction. For the sound that’s used in my film I made sure to record lots of atmospheric sounds for example, the bird song and the waterfall. I feel that by improving on my sound and Foley my films have increased. The colour correction in this film was also a tough challenge for me as I had to match the footage I recorded to the video game footage. For example, I increased the green in the shot of the smoke grenade as this made it stand out more.

Here is the poem I have chosen to have read over my film. 

We live in a small compass, Between reality and magic. In this playground for immortality, Both spectator and spectacle Inhabit uncharted world space. Here the plain can experience The self-presentation of great beauty, The meek can encompass the bold. Here the soul is not only decentered, But multiplied without limit. In this sphere of surreality, Meet the avatar And its telepresence. Step into the picture - Become what you play, Generate and destroy. Can the human spirit penetrate This virtual world? Immersion or illusion: We can be recreated, Or we can recreate ourselves. Infinity reflected in the finite We are who we pretend to be.

VIDEO GAME FOOTAGE TEST

Here is my test footage for recording gameplay that will be included in my experimental film. I plan to record all of the footage in game using the PlayStation and then copy off the gameplay to edit with on Premier Pro.

REFLECTION

29/1/17

This week I continued to plan for my experimental film and then on Wednesday I travelled to Corfe castle to film the train museum and the castle itself. Overall the shoot went well and using my Steadicam I managed to film some smooth tracking shots. Then over the weekend I travelled back home to Bristol where I filmed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday I filmed at a location called Hamburger Hill where they had old army tanks and a waterfall which I will include in my film. Then on Saturday I spontaneously asked my barber to film inside of his store and then on Sunday I filmed myself and my dog using the GOPRO. Overall I was pleased with how the shoots went. However, I was limited on the Sunday as it was raining heavily which meant I couldn’t film as much with my DSLR as I would have liked. I now plan to edit my film next week in time for my critique on Thursday.
