Power Couple (Ethan x MC)

Book: Open Heart, beyond Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Lilac Allende) Word count: 1.2 K Warning: Suggestive language and slightly NS*FW at the end Prompt:  #143. “Are you trying to turn me on or are you really just that oblivious?” Premise: During their first public appearance as Chief and Head of Edenbrook’s Diagnostics Team all eyes are on them but they only have eyes for each other.

A/N: Ana de Armas, my MC’s FC, looking so hot in that Venice dress inspired this one. Thank you anonymous for the prompt! I am still working through these! 

“Is this okay?”

Lilac was all radiant smiles as she gestured down at the silk dress cascading around her. She waited for his reaction, lifting an expectant brow. With a start, he realized he had been moronically quiet from the moment she appeared through the elevator doors.

In his defense, words were insufficient to describe Lilac Allende in that coral dress billowing around her. It clung to her body at the dip of her waist, flowing freely around her with the splendor of a goddess. If the hotel lobby wasn't bustling with people, Ethan would have gladly knelt at her feet, her obedient supplicant. A cluster of crystals glittered at her neck, accentuating the sinful plunge of her neckline.

“You look—” he started in his typical fashion. “Far more beautiful than I can verbalize.”

Lilac blushed.

“Look at you, Dr. Ramsey,” she said, impressed. “Your compliments get more and more poetic every year.”

A series of cheers and whistling interrupted his response. Next thing he knew, they were surrounded by the grinning faces of their friends. Their revelry only grew louder as they assessed Ethan and Lilac's attire.

“Holy smokes!”

“You guys look so good together!” Sienna exclaimed, eyes glittering.

“Chief of Medicine and Head of Edenbrook's Diagnostics Team, bitches!” Bryce added with a cheer, earning himself looks from people nearby.

“You two are a certified power couple,” Aurora observed.

“Yeah! It's giving Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively for sure,” Elijah said with a laugh.

“That tracks,” Jackie said, appearing unimpressed. “Since Ramsey looks ready to kiss the ground Lilac walks on.”

Ethan flashed her a look that she expertly ignored.

“Hey, if a man doesn't worship his girl at every turn, then he doesn't deserve her,” Bryce said wisely.

There were more cheers of agreement.

“Okay, everyone! Before we go inside, we have to take a group selfie.” Sienna made sure to look directly at Ethan before adding, “Photos are non-negotiable!”

Much to his chagrin, Ethan was forced to pose to those dreaded selfies. That wasn't enough, of course. Sienna proceeded to take ridiculous couple pictures of him and Lilac in various poses. At one point, Bryce used his suit jacket to create a wind effect that sent Lilac's hair flying around her.

“Last one, I promise!” Sienna said when she saw the look on Ethan's face.

Minutes later, the group stood at the entrance of the event hall. Their friends laughed and chatted animatedly as they strolled into the room, not noticing how Lilac lingered behind. Ethan stopped right beside her.

“Are you alright?”

She nodded, but he still caught the way her fingers toyed with the strap of her purse.

“This is the first time we attend something like this since our promotions. It feels like a big deal.”

Wordlessly, he pulled her close, kissing her temple.

“It is,” he agreed. “Everyone of note in our field is here. I'm certain the gossip will be incessant. Do you wish to leave?”

Lilac sighed, her spine straightening with determination. “No. I hate running away,” she said. “To hell with all of them.”

Ethan laughed, throwing her an impressed look. The way her lips set in a determined line made him want to kiss her. He almost lamented the fact that they weren't going back to their hotel room anytime soon.

Arm in arm, they entered the ballroom.

At first, the ballroom full of their colleagues and peers failed to notice their entrance. They were too enraptured in their own conversations to pay them any mind. Soon, however, clusters of people noticed the new Edenbrook Chief of Medicine arm in arm with the young doctor leading the prestigious diagnostics team. Many were experts about hiding their intrigue, but Lilac caught reactions ranging from shocked to downright disapproving.

Ethan, meanwhile, appeared utterly unaffected. 

He steered her through the throng, stopping to chat only with people he respected. Luckily, that number was low and they only mingled with no more than five groups. They were done with social obligation in less than an hour.

“I'll get us a drink,” Ethan said over the din of the music. “God knows we earned it.”

And with a quick kiss to the back of her hand, he made his way toward the bar. Lilac took that opportunity to find the nearest powder room. While she meant her impassioned “to hell with them all”, it was still exhausting to be on the receiving end of curious or judgmental glances. A moment by herself felt like peace.

Her reflection on the ornate mirror showed a cool and collected version of herself, one that she admired. With renewed resolve, she pushed all trepidation aside, focusing instead on reapplying her lipstick. When she was finished, she trekked back toward the party. A much larger, gold-gilded mirror in the hallway caught her attention. She stopped before it, rearranging her dress. She glanced over her shoulder, ensuring all was well with the back.

“It looks great from where I'm standing,” Ethan's voice said from behind her. Through the reflection, she could see him standing a few feet away holding two glasses with dark liquid.

Lilac laughed. She shifted her body to look at her reflection from a different angle, all while placing extra care in swaying her hips. Ethan moved closer, eyes locked on her through the mirror.

“Are you trying to turn me on,” he started darkly, pulling her body flush against his. The drinks lay forgotten on a nearby table. “Or are you really just that oblivious?”

This time, her laughter rang around the empty hallway.

“I'm anything but oblivious, babe. I'm fully aware of how much I turn you on.”

His response was a delicious growl at her ear that catalyzed a pleasant chill through her body. Lilac bit her lower lip and his heated gaze fell down to her lips through the mirror. Large, expert hands, meanwhile, brushed her hips as they moved upward. They reached the side of her breasts, fingers unabashedly delving under the fabric.

“You are so beautiful,” he whispered as he worked her.

Lilac whimpered, knees weak. The ministrations of his fingers, his fiery gaze on hers through the glass, and the risk of possibly being caught made her weak with dizzying pleasure. When he plucked lazily with his fingers, Lilac’s moan echoed around the hall.

“Someone will see us,” she whispered urgently.

Ethan let out a resigned sigh against her neck. With a pained look, he stopped his movements.

“You’re probably right.”

“Rain check?”

“Absolutely.”

Before Lilac could say anything else, he spun her to face him. Her lips ached for his, but instead of kissing her, he lowered himself to kneel before her. There was a devilish glint in his eye that made her body thrum for him.

“This is infinitely more compromising than what you were doing before.”

He didn’t respond. Instead, his hands delicately found their way under the silk of her skirt. Lilac watched him curiously, heart drumming against her chest.

His wandering fingers found the lace of her panties, thumbs hooking on the hem. With measured movements that were pure, blissful torture for her, he pulled them down.

“Those are mine,” she teased breathlessly, watching him stuff them in his trouser pocket. “They were expensive.”

“I know. I bought them for you.”

“So you’re taking them back.”

“Holding them,” he corrected, rising to his feet. In the golden glow of the hallway, he looked cool and casual— as though he hadn’t just claimed her panties as a souvenir. “You can get them back in our hotel room later. Call it an incentive to get the hell out of here as soon as possible.”

Note: Spoiler- she wants to get the hell out of there like yesterday but it’s 100000 xs more fun to watch this man suffer. He has to endure that party with his gf looking like a 15 out of ten and her panties in his pocket? 

He really thought he did something. 

But really, he played himself.

1. historical fiction: The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by M. Lee i read this bc my best friend got it, and i enjoyed it a lot more than she did, probably bc i went in with very low expectations; i don't usually like/read historical fiction, but i read this in a couple days and aside from the ending being quite abrupt (imo), it was a good read, especially for the summer! (it has: lgbtq+ characters, good sibling dynamics, adventure, witty banter, slight supernatural elements)

2. urban fantasy: The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune my goodness. where do i even begin? this book felt like a tight hug from someone you love. a warm cup of your fave tea and a soft blanket, rain pitter-pattering on the window. this story made me laugh out loud, the characters are so well-written and so so endearing. honestly, if you're in need of an emotional pick-me-up or just something comforting to treat yourself to, this is it. read it. (it has: found family, comfort, humor, such well-executed world building you're immersed instantly)

3. published this year: One Last Stop by C. McQuiston this story. i didn’t expect this in the slightest, but i can’t say i mind it; of course the romance and storytelling were lovely, it’s a CMQ book - but what really swept me off my feet were the side characters. i don’t think i’ve ever loved side characters as much as i do this bunch. these amazing, diverse, fully fleshed-out humans that really feel like you could bump into them on the Q.  (it has: found family, humor, a cast of side characters like you’ve never seen before, lgbtq+ characters (so many!))

4. recced by a friend: The Case for Jamie by B. Cavallaro this is the 3rd book in the Charlotte Holmes series and i gotta say, there was a plot twist that had me sending my bestie all caps screaming double texts, but like,,,, 7 of them? anyways, a good summer read :) (it has: mystery, unreliable narration, good plot twists, a lovable main character and also a slightly annoying other mc lol)

5. on my tbr for over a year: A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab (reread) wasn’t this just lovely. i enjoyed this so much more than the first time i read it, it’s actually insane. just wow. why should u read this? parallel Londons where magic thrives, starves, or lies forgotten. a piratical antiheroine. a royal diplomat turned smuggler. a high-stakes mission. simply *chef’s kiss* if you’re looking for a brilliant, original fantasy, do yourself a favor and pick this up! (it has: incredible worldbuilding, lovable characters, vivid af storytelling, multiple dimensions and magic!)

6. trans mc: Meet Cute Diary by E. Lee  i really wanted to love this. i really did. and even though this went in a diff direction than i’d expected, it was a pretty straight-forward story, without any shocking plot twists (which i enjoy a lot, so i kinda missed them), and tbh i didn’t get sucked into the story like i would’ve wanted. however. this book has such a diverse cast of characters, and has a non-binary character written by a non-binary author - i think the representation really is the main thing this book has going for it, even if the story itself isn’t the most ground-breaking. (it has: a mixed race trans main character, lgbtq+ rep, a wonderful sibling dynamic (my fave thing abt the book)) * please do check out trigger warnings for the book or dm me about it before reading

7. (dark) academia: Ninth House by L. Bardugo well.... ms bardugo’s done it again. i was a bit wary going in bc i absolutely adore her six of crows duology and this was the point where i’d find out if it was just the crows, or if i actually liked her writing. thankfully it was the latter. i do have a couple... hiccups? - issue is too strong of a word - about it, but overall i enjoyed this a lot. i just love how unique bardugo’s ideas are and how expertly she weaves them into a fully rounded story. now onto the painful wait for the sequel! (it has: mystery, plot twists (multiple, yeehaw!), a dark, grisly atmosphere, a captivating narrative, lots of mythology and academia references) * please do check out trigger warnings for the book or dm me about it before reading

8. author of color: Emergency Contact by M.H.K. Choi wow i did not like this one.. maybe it’s just that i’m so over stories where the mc is violently not like other girls and the whole romance is based on ppl fixing each other… i really don’t enjoy reading abt characters who just hate themselves or about hating on other women for no damn reason and calling out everything ’wrong’ with them.. def wouldn’t want to read this in my impressionable years, thinking these flaws were everything others notice about you.. also, like, zero chemistry between the mc and the love interest

9. main character of color: Six of Crows by L. Bardugo this remains to be one of my absolute faves ever. worldbuilding? amazing. character dynamics? chef’s kiss. the writing? atmosphere? plot twists? oscar. pulitzer. nobel prize. 

10. fake dating: Take a Hint, Dani Brown (T. Hibbert) i think i went into this one with too high expectations... i’d seen ppl rave about this all over various social media and yeah the story was good, but i didn’t find it to be anything groundbreaking? i also gotta say i wasn’t the biggest fan of the main character. your typical romance novel, i’d say (it has: lgbtq+ main character, main characters of color, mental health rep)

11. one word title: Him (E. Kennedy, S. Bowen) okay okay i really just read this to get a bit of a short break from crooked kingdom.. my brain needed sth effortless that required zero cognitive function to read and this was lovely; fair warning tho, this book is about 87% smut, so if it’s not your thing i wouldn’t recommend this - otherwise, i read this in a day and it was a good quick, undemanding read (it has: hockey gays, miscommunication, childhood friends to lovers)

12. disabled character: Crooked Kingdom (L. Bardugo) i mean. you know what’s up already, this remains one of my fave books, cue the incoherent screaming amirite ladies (it has: everything u need in life, including lgbtq+ and disability rep)

13. not romance-centered: This Is Going to Hurt (A. Kay) can u believe i finally finished this? me neither. this one is perfect for fellow commuters, as it’s written in the form of very short diary entries; funny, heart-breaking, real. a wonderful read for anyone interested in medicine, or in the hidden inner mechanics of the nitty gritty of patient care. seriously, read this.

14. mystery + secret identity: Ace of Spades (F. Àbíké-Íyímídé) [review coming soon]

Rafael was walking Octavia home after their date. It was not a romantic date, even though she wished it were. 

They had hung out a few times ever since they met. He introduced her to his friend, a nice guy Raf used to dance with, at a nursing home where they are volunteers. He even introduced her to his grandmother. However, every time they went out, it always ended up on a friendly note. She thought that would change when he taught her a few samba steps. When they got closer. But she couldn’t be more wrong. Or at least, she thought she was fooling herself. She swore to herself he was flirting with her that night, but nothing changed between them after that. 

She didn’t know what to think anymore. Maybe he was not interested in her after all.

She surreptitiously looked at and tried to suppress her questioning face. 

But, to no avail, he saw it. “What’s on your mind, O?”

She mirrored his movement and put her hands in her coat pockets. “Oh, nothing... Just lost in my thoughts.” 

He smiled and bumped her elbow with his own in a joking way, “Come on! I’ve never seen you so quiet.”

She tried to smile back. “Oh, it’s nothing. Don’t worry, I’m just feeling sleepy already, and we have to wake up early tomorrow.”

He was not convinced by her answer at all, she had this frown on her face like she was thinking hard about something. He knew this much about her, but if she didn’t want to tell him the truth he was not going to push it. He thought it was not his place. 

They walked in silence for a while until they got in front of her building. She turned and looked at him. “Well, that’s me…”

He felt her uneasiness and touched her arm in a caring way. “O, whatever is on your mind I hope you feel better tomorrow.”

She looked at him with a questioning face.

He said with uncertainty in his voice. “You had that frown on your face like you were really worried about something. Is that something I can help you with?”

She sighed thinking that maybe that was not the right time, but she was tired of not knowing if what she was feeling was real after all. “You know what Raf? You can.”

His eyes widened. “I can? Why didn’t you say something sooner? Please tell me already how I can help you!”

“So…” she didn’t know how to start talking about it, but she needed to get it out of her chest, “maybe I’m crazy, or I’m seeing things, but the thing is, I like you, Raf.”

He smiled. “I like you too, O, you know that!”

“No, I don’t. The thing is I don’t know how to flirt, but I’m interested in you.” She tried to hide the panic in her voice. There, the cat was out of the bag.

He beamed as she had never seen before, she could see a sparkle in his eyes. It was infectious. “Do you mean it, O?”

Her uneasiness had turned into something else she couldn’t explain. “Of course I do! Why would I lie-”

She couldn’t finish what she was about to say because of Raf’s lips on hers. She didn’t even know how it started. She just knew that what she imagined so many times before sleeping was really and finally happening.

The kiss had a hint of shyness at first but it didn’t take long to turn into something passionate. After a while kissing each other, Raf smiled against her lips. “You have no idea how long I waited for this to happen.”

She smiled back. “You mean it?

Raf hugged her peppering kisses on her neck, “Are you kidding? Just since the first time I saw you!”

“No way! I was a mess that day!” She laughed.

“Are you crazy? You were the most beautiful intern I saw.” He kissed her again until they were out of breath.

After trying to catch their breath they looked into each other’s eyes and Raf cupped her face. “So, is this what was worrying you before?”

She blushed. “Yes, this whole time I was going crazy without knowing if I was seeing or imagining things and you were only interested in being friends.”

He kissed the tip of her nose. “And if I say to you that I was feeling the same way? Every time we went out together I wanted to let it all out and kiss you, but I didn’t want to screw things over between us and be the guy who doesn’t respect women and would be hitting on you even if you weren’t interested at all.”

“See? As I said, I don’t know how to flirt! If I knew, you wouldn’t have doubted that of course, I am crushing on you.”

They laughed together.

“So, do you wanna come in?” Octavia asked, pointing to the elevator.

“Are you sure? I don’t want to overstep.”

“No way, I really don’t want to let you go back now, I want to enjoy this tonight.” She smiled and kissed him.

“Ok, if you insist.”

They put their arms around each other and caught the elevator to her dorm, where they enjoyed the first time the date ended how they expected.

[a little note: hey I need to write more. Here’s a little fic that was in my head today. It’s just some wine and inner thoughts].

“No no – you’re doing the impression all wrong.” Her feet dangles on the edge of the roof as she mimics their etiquette teacher’s lesson earlier that week. The lesson was great to be fair, but the delivery leaves something less than desired by her standards. “The accent has to be a little more of like – like a drawl, like thissss.” She keeps her tone low and husky, reveling in the words and barely managing some semblance of the accent before Blake erupts in a fit of laughter.

“God, that’s so spot on!” He shakes his head, grin wide enough to make Ryan’s heart sputter.

Almost. She’s getting quite good at hiding it.

“Alright, Rutherland – you win. This time.”

“Ha! In your face!” She’d do a victory dance around the quad but settles for thrusting a finger at him in triumph instead. Almost immediately after, she fumbles to catch the bottle of wine he hands back to her.

“Woah, careful.” An arm reaches out as if to steady her but stops halfway when she manages to sit upright on her own again. “I always knew you were a sore loser Rutherland, but not a sore winner too.”

Instead of answering, her tongue juts out and she angles her chin.

“You’re lucky.” Dark brown irises fleck in amusement. “Who knew winning would look so good on you.”

She scoffs at his compliment, doing her best to ignore the sudden heat in her cheeks. She takes another long sip of wine. The very expensive wine they managed to swindle on their last trip to one of the most prominent wineries this side of the coast. It’s like honey on her tongue. “Everything looks good on me Hayes. I know we haven’t known each other long but eventually you’ll figure it out.”

He lets out a throaty chuckle, leaning in and bracing both hands on either side of her.

It’s almost too close for comfort. She can’t keep drinking and think straight with him this close. She thrusts the bottle back at him.

“I think I’m beginning to.”

His eyes dart the way they often do to her lips and her heart, the way it often does – reacts in a way that makes her fight the urge to pull him closer. They’re supposed to be taking a break from their project not pinning for each other before another one of their big debates.

Ryan wants to look away first but can’t seem to manage to. “You’re really good at that.” She watches for his reaction.

He takes a long swig, and breaks eye contact first. When he stares back, his expression is a little hard to read. “At what?”

“Y’know - schmoozing, smooth-talking.” Ryan makes a gesture with her hands, trying to keep steady while bumping the back of her heels against the roof’s cement surface. “You don’t give yourself nearly enough credit.”

Blaine doesn’t respond at first. He hands her back the nearly empty bottle. His dark eyes zero in on the view in front of them, lights spanning across the campus on a cool Saturday evening. It’s a pretty nice view up this high, without the press or anyone else watching. They’d have a field day if they caught them. But despite knowing the risks, he can’t help but think the view beside him is even better. Too much in fact, that he blurts out what’s on his mind.

“I don’t want to be a politician. That’s what they want– but that’s not me.” Truthfully, he doesn’t know what he wants – he hasn’t quite figured it all out yet. But Blaine knows it doesn’t involve the path his parents tries to carve into him.  He believes in helping his people the right way, whatever that looked like. “Nah, I’ll pass. I’d much rather keep using my devilish charm for good and not evil.” He continues, his tone softening a bit.

The wine isn’t supposed to make him too serious. It’s supposed to help keep things light…keep things fun. They’ve been having lots of fun lately. He should be thinking about all the other ways they can keep having fun and not about how fucked up his parents expectations are. Or how the very thought of going back home early if he doesn’t get his shit together makes him want to scream –

All his thoughts go quiet when he feels her hand, resting over his. It’s supposed to be a simple gesture he thinks, not something that sets off a series of sparks buzzing between them. But it does anyway.

He sucks in a breath, it’s always been like this between them – as much as he doesn’t want to admit it.

It’s even worse when she looks at him like this, all soft – no teasing in her voice, no challenge in her eyes. He hates that he likes it. He hates it that he wants more.

Before she’s able to speak Blaine swoops in, cupping the back of neck – kissing her underneath the brightly lit sky. It’s as much for him as it is for her, pressing his lips against hers – pulling her closer, wanting her to be closer still.

When they come up for air, Ryan’s eyes are lit with excitement. Her body seems to hum in pleasure “You’re deflecting.” Her voice comes out all breathless.

“Yup.” Another kiss, one by her nose this time. “I’m very good at it.”

“Delectably so,” Ryan agrees, kissing the corner of his lips. She pulls back. “But I’m worried about you.”

Her cheeks are flushed in a way that has less to do with the wine and more with how embarrassed she feels admitting it. “I’m not used to worrying about people, so just –” she stops short, blows out a breath. “You don’t need to tell me if you don’t want to, privacy is hard to come by here. I just need to know you’re okay.” Wine forgotten, she cups his cheeks - framing his face. “And when you’re not okay, you can tell me that too.”

His eyes widen a little in surprise.

“Okay?” She prompts again because Blaine hasn’t answered her and it’s scary talking about things like this if he doesn’t want to.

But Blaine nods once, his eyes more open and expressive than it has been in days. His mouth grows wider than his eyes – a smirk that catches Ryan off guard. “Aw Rutherland, I didn’t know you cared.”

Of course I care, you idiot. She curses him silently, unable to say the words out loud. She can never say them out-loud. It’s not possible for people like them. People like them, don’t get to choose.

Instead, Ryan half-considers pushing him off the roof – only if she knew he’d land down there safely of course. “So long as you keep supplying the wine, I’ll keep caring.””

It had been a long day for Sadie, waking up at four in the morning to work an eleven hour shift. Ethan had had the day off so they didn’t need to wake up the kids and drag them to daycare before school, meaning they had much more energy than her. Thankfully, now that she had three kids, they could play with each other rather than her, so she was on the couch sitting in between Ethan’s legs, laying back against his chest as she told him about her day.

“Mommy! Daddy! Hide me!” Chloe whisper-yelled as she climbed up on the couch, crawling underneath the blanket on her parents legs.

“Why are we hiding you?” Sadie whispered back.

“We’re playing hide-and-seek!” Chloe positioned her small body in between her mom’s legs so her siblings would barely be able to see her.

“Hide-and-seek? What happened to dress-up?” Ethan asked.

“We’re done with that. Now shh or they’ll find me!”

Sadie and Ethan quietly giggled to each other as Sadie adjusted the blanket to better hide Chloe, despite the fact that her breathing could still be seen through the fabric. Sadie went back to telling Ethan about her day, so as not to seem suspicious to the other kids, however, she now kept her language and descriptions PG. 

It didn’t take long for Blake to come running into the room, looking in various potential hiding spots, but completely ignoring his parents. He didn’t need their help! But, because he ignored them, he failed to see the lump in their laps, with its rhythmic movement. He ran to the next room, still on the hunt.

As they heard Blake’s feet run through the house, Chloe once again resituated herself. She laid against her mom’s tummy and wrapped her little arms around her, no longer hidden underneath the blanket.

“I’m bored.” Chloe pouted.

“You’re bored?” Sadie asked.

“Mommy can we read?”

“You don’t want to wait until Blake finds you?”

“No.”

“Okay, sweetie, what do you want to read?”

“A fairy book!”

“Do you want to go grab one off the shelf?” Sadie offered.

“Okay!” Chloe scrambled off her mom’s lap and sat down in front of the small bookshelf full of children’s books, perusing her choices. 

“Have the kids been like this all day?” Sadie asked Ethan.

“Pretty much. Sometimes I wish they were closer in age so they would be at similar developmental stages and actually be able to agree on what to play.”

“Hey, we can’t say we didn’t try.”

Ethan sighed and pressed a kiss against the back of Sadie’s head. “I know, sweetheart.”

Chloe ran back over to the couch and handed a book to Sadie before crawling back into her lap. 

As Sadie read the book to Chloe, Ethan admired his wife and daughter. He had never imagined a world where he spent his days off playing with his kids and helping them with homework. At least not until Sadie. No one else had ever changed his life the way she had. 

His thoughts were interrupted when Blake ran into the room, followed by Daisy.

“I found you!” Blake said to Chloe.

Chloe just frowned and responded, “I’m not playing anymore.”

“You can’t just stop playing because I found you!”

“That’s not why!” 

“Hey, you two, let’s not fight. Chloe, why don’t you tell Blake why you don’t want to play?” Sadie said gently.

“I got bored and I wanted to read with Mommy.”

“But we weren’t done, yet.” Blake pouted.

“Chloe, why don’t you just come and tell us next time you get bored, so we know?” Daisy offered.

“Okay, I can do that.” Chloe responded.

“What should we play now?” Blake asked.

“I don’t want to play. I want to read with Mommy.” Chloe snuggled against her mom.

“If Chloe wants to spend time with Mom, then we should do something with Dad!” Daisy said.

“What do you want to do?” Ethan asked.

“Ooh! Can you paint our nails?” Daisy asked.

“Ooh, yeah, please, Dad?” Blake chimed in.

“Okay, let’s go pick out some colors.”

“And can we paint your nails too, Dad?” Blake asked as Ethan got off the couch.

“Sure.” 

As Ethan went off with Daisy and Blake, Chloe returned her attention to Sadie. 

“Can we finish the book now?”

Top 43 Songs of the 2010s

Originally a 40 song list that only included songs first released after 2010, I realised that this kind of strictness makes for a less cohesive list. If you want to represent how you engaged with the music of the decade, it should make sense that there is some kind of delay. Usually for song lists, I am including December of the year before and excluding December of the year of writing. So given that I do not feel ready to include anything from 2019, and the first 3 tracks here are all important turning points (and were all later released on full-lengths in 2010), this list feels more well-rounded (and poetic to start with a track called ‘Eraser’ and end with a track called ‘Reborn’).

The story this list tells is one of a lopsided decade, a larger amount of tracks included from the first half. While this may be indicative of my focus shifting, somewhat, from music to film around 2013, there may be arguments to suggest that innovation has shifted between these forms. This is something that will be reflected when I release my top films of the decade list which will be lopsided to the opposite half. K-pop for example, seems to me to have shifted from a form defined by masterful B sides to a form defined by masterful filmmaking, to the extent that audio and visuals become inseparable and it would no longer make sense to see something like FANCY as just a song.

One thing that did surprise me when formulating this list is the prevalence of a vocal element, considering how at the turn of the decade I was heavily listening to experimental dance music (reflected somewhat in ‘Eraser’ and ‘CMYK’). It seems important, then, to acknowledge Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak as really solidifying West’s explorations into voice as an instrument, and its mark on the decade really shows. An increase in popularity for something like K-pop shows the possibility of negating language through voice, as does the focus on texture and melody for an artist like Chief Keef. A prevalence of the vocal throughout my list does not necessarily create tension with an ideal of ending the tyranny of the verbal – we see that the vocal can displace the verbal.
