Capturing the ambience of LEGO Island 2
This minigame-packed adventure explores many classic LEGO themes.
Tumblr media
Running the game
There are two main versions of the game to chose from: the original 2001 release, and an improved 2007 version released as part of a two-pack. There is also apparently an unfinished, unreleased v1.1 with some bug fixes.
Curiously, the version hosted on MyAbandonware seems nearly identical to other 2001 releases I found. There appear to be minimal differences between the two.
All versions use a simple disk check; mounting an ISO with a tool like Daemon Tools suffices. There are also No-CD hex-edits available if you're interested.
Debug menu and Level-select
We can access LI2's debug menu by altering the main menu options. I found some hex-edits for this on RRU. If you're not comfortable with hex-edits you can try using a patcher or patch, or LI2 Mod Manager.
04 00 00 00 02 -> 01 00 00 00 11 43 52 45 44 49 54 53 -> 44 45 42 55 47 00 00
Tumblr media
Widescreen
Use the resolution and widescreen hacks offered by LI2 Mod Manager. See this thread for more detail on how it works.
Tumblr media
Hiding UI and Player-character
This is possible using Lego Island 2 Game Editor. It's a powerful albeit buggy application for modifying LI2 assets.
If LI2GE doesn't work, for example to edit fonts, you can use Lego Island 2 Extractor and/or Lego Island 2 Explorer. Once installed, be sure to disable automatic updates inside the program's INI to avoid startup crashes.
Tumblr media
LI2 will prefer to load files from identically-named folders if they are present in the _data directory. For example, if a Fonts folder exists, its files will be used and Fonts.bob/bod won't be loaded.
We can also pause the game to remove the HUD, screenshot this state, and create a no-HUD overlay for our footage.
(Not) Free camera
A modder devised a way to summon a glider at any time.
Rendering ambience sequences
I recommend using the Fruity LSD effect with FL Studio. First, open the MID file in LEGO Island 2's level files, for example Fishing_Amb.mid. Be sure to select MIDI Out with Fruity LSD in the subsequent dialog.
Tumblr media
Afterward, click the folder icon in the top left to specify a DLS file - use one found in your MID file's folder. Once it's loaded, populate each channel by clicking it, and picking the corresponding patch. Don't forget to populate the "percussive" one-shots as well (Channel 10 in the screenshot below).
Tumblr media
You are now ready to play your MID with the intended samples attached, or export it to a WAV file.
Appendix: Rendering music sequences
Download DirectMusic Producer. Supposedly this program allows you to export samples and sequence data. You could then render the pair using the MIDI renderer of your choice, such as OpenMPT or FL Studio's Directmusic plugin.
Appendix: Ambience sequence dead-ends
I tried VLC, with the DLS configured under FluidSynth, but this gave no output. I tried Miles Sound Tools with a DLS specified, but again - no output. I tried Winamp but seemingly couldn't get in_midi to use a custom DLS file, despite specifying one in the setting dialogs.
Appendix: Other LI2 developer tools
A soak test can be activated by pressing F8 while in windowed mode. You can also spawn a debugger window by pressing F9.

Whether you're making your own tiles or using an existing set, there is a little bit more to using them than just placing them on the map. Here's where we get into the database.
As a refresher, you can get to the database under Tools, by pressing F9, or by selecting the gear icon at the top of the screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can tell that a lot of the magic happens here because there are a lot of ways to get to it.
There's a lot in the database, but we're still focused on tiles for now so I'll pop down to the tilesets button. It'll bring up your tilesets.
Tumblr media
As shown above, all parts of a tileset can be adjusted here, from the separate parts of the A tab through the B-E tabs (though the sample set shown here only goes through C).
Outside here is made of a few different subgroups so a set can mix and match from your available assets for flexibility. For example, the Outside and SF Outside sets that comes with RMMZ both use the same A1 and A2 tiles but have different A3-C tiles.
Once you've got the tiles you want to work with put together, the important stuff is that column of buttons on the right. That's where you tell RPG Maker how to make the tiles behave in the game.
The first one is Passage and it actually has three possible settings.
Tumblr media
An X, as shown on the barrel and gravestones, means that the player cannot walk on the tile. Whether it's a solid object like a building or a hole the character cannot just jump down, an X is used to prevent the player from walking where you don't want them. An O means the tile is passable and the player can walk on it, as with the clumps of grass and stepping stones.
Finally the star, as shown on the upper tile of the tree, means that the player can pass the tile and whatever is shown on the tile will appear above the player. This allows the player to walk behind tall trees or under hanging signs.
Passage (4 dir) is that but more nuanced. It's for tiles you want the player to be able to walk on in some directions but be blocked in others. Think like a bench the player can "sit" on or a bridge over a gap of land.
Tumblr media
If I kept the passage as it was in the default settings for this set, the player would be able to walk north or south off the bridge directly onto the grass "below". Likewise they could just walk onto a bridge high "above" them from the ground and destroy the illusion of elevation in a 2D environment.
So to fix this all I have to do is go into the B tab...
Tumblr media
... and make the bridges 4-direction passability match how I want the tile to work in-game. Now I can build bridges over land as well as over already impassable tiles like water.
Next is Ladder.
Tumblr media
Basically, this setting being on indicates that the player will always face up when standing on this tile regardless of the direction they're moving up or down it (so you don't climb down a rope and just look like you're walking).
In XP if you wanted this effect you'd have to make direction fix events. MZ allows you to build it into the tile and call it a day.
Tumblr media
Whether it's to indicate sinking into shallow water or trudging through deep snow (or, you know, walking through tall grass where wild Pokemon are ready to jump out), this setting makes it so the lower part of the player becomes semi-transparent when standing on the tile.
Tumblr media
Counter is for if you want a tile to be a solid object but still allow you to interact with an event on the other side.
Tumblr media
You can "talk" over a counter if there is a one-tile width counter between you and the event you're trying to talk to (like a businessman seated behind a desk or a shopkeeper behind their counter).
Tumblr media
A counter will also extend the A2 autotiles a little to extend the legs down a bit to look more natural.
Damage Floor
Tumblr media
This one's pretty neat to have built in. Damage floor is for stuff that drains HP from walking on it, such as swamps of poisonous goop.
I honestly don't remember whether this existed in XP or not.
Elsewhere in the database you can also control whether the player can reach 0HP from floor damage or if it instead only drops to 1HP. That's for later, though. We're still here for tiles. When I say I'm doing a learnalong I'm going into painful detail here.
Finally there's Terrain Tag.
Tumblr media
Basically you get a default of 0 and up to seven other tags you can assign to tiles. Terrain tags were a big thing in determining encounters back when I played around in Pokemon Essentials (think Tall Grass) but I never played much with them otherwise. They allow custom versions of the aforementioned ways to assign special rules to a tile that automatically works when put on a map.
That last bit about priority basically refers to the layer the tile is placed on.
Tumblr media
In other words, a table (counter) placed on layer 2 would be read by the game over whatever the floor or ground below it is. However, if a tile on a higher layer has a default 0 chosen and the ground below it has a numerical tag added, the 0 tile will be ignored in favor of the one with a terrain tag assigned.
Even if you're not building all your own resources these are pretty useful to know for if you want to change something up, like I did with the 4-directional passage on the bridges.

Fast X
“Fast X” finally takes its foot off the gas pedal and feels like the first movie that doesn’t one-up the previous.
Dominic Toretto gets a mission from the Agency to steal computer chips in Rome. He lets Roman, Tej, and Ramsey handle that while he stays at home with his wife and kid. In the middle of the night, Cipher, an old enemy of the family, shows up badly wounded. She warns Dom that his family is in danger because the son of Hernan Reyes, a drug kingpin who was killed because of Dom’s crew, is now seeking revenge. They realize Hernan Reyes’s son has already put his plan in motion when Cipher reveals that the Agency isn’t operating in Rome currently.
I know I champion cinema as an art form to the point of borderline pretentiousness, but I do have a soft spot for mindless popcorn flicks. Case in point, the Fast & Furious franchise. Since the fifth installment, these movies have been unapologetically insane and I’m here for it. What I loved most about each installment was the fact that they were able to outdo themselves on the crazy factor each and every single time. Just when you thought they couldn’t go more off-the-rails, they manage to do it in the sequel. Well, with “Fast X”, I’m sad to say that they finally ran out of gas. With “F9″ literally going into space, it was hard to see how they could top that. “Fast X” was going to have to have a street race on the moon to top that. Sadly, this movie is the first in a long time for this franchise to feel tame. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still absolute insanity, but it’s not more insane than the last movie. There are no action set pieces that were instantly iconic. I know that a lot of people are saying it’s the giant bomb ball scene, but the action in that scene seemed like an appetizer for this franchise. There were no shameless soap opera reveals, which was also a bummer. They did do two reveals at the end, but one felt promising rather than exciting and the other left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. The first one was a welcome surprise because I liked their character and their return has fun potential for how the group dynamic changes. The other just feels like they shouldn’t be welcome back into the franchise after all the bad blood. I guess their career taking a nosedive was just the motivator to put aside the beef and start being a team player again. There’s a character who sacrifices himself, but with how ridiculously durable these characters are, there was no emotional weight behind it. It felt out of place that something as simple as that would kill off a character. Also, at this point, we, as the audience members of the Fast & Furious franchise, have been trained to not take character deaths seriously because we know they’ll come back eventually. That same character also basically has Dom’s son commit murder and act like it was fun. That was a bit weird for me and I’m sure a lot of people felt the same way. Finally, my main problem with this movie is its ending. I know that the movie is planned to be a trilogy to end the franchise, but the ending felt abrupt. The movie didn’t reach the heights it normally does and then it cuts when we’re in the middle of the action. I mean, I’m definitely excited to find out what’s going to happen next, but not to the point where I can’t wait. I really hope these next two movies lean more into the absurdity because that’s how these movies should go out.

Red Sonja set pic shows a bloody Matilda Lutz in bikini armor
A set pic from the Red Sonja reboot shows a blood spattered Matilda Lutz, in bikini armor, with director M.J. Bassett A reboot of Red Sonja spent nearly fifteen years in development hell before going into production in 2022 with director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) at the helm. Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Matilda Lutz ended up starring in the film, and while we still don’t know when we’ll get to see her version of the title character in action, a set pic has just arrived online to give us a look at a blood spattered Lutz wearing a version of the character’s iconic bikini armor. You can check it out at the bottom of this article. Lutz has previously said that she wore the metal bikini during a sequence that takes place in an arena with lots of extras and involves her character “fighting monsters.” Bassett directed the film from a screenplay by Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime). This version of Red Sonja is derived from the sword and sorcery comic books by Dynamite Entertainment, based on the character created by Robert E. Howard and adapted by Roy Thomas. Details on the plot are being kept under wraps. All we know is that Sonja is “a fearsome warrior boasting a high degree of skill with a sword”. In the cast with Lutz (Revenge) are Rhona Mitra (Doomsday), Wallis Day (Sex/Life) as Annisia, Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) as Draygan, Michael Bisping (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) as Hawk, Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu (Thor: Love and Thunder) as Amarak, Manal El Feitury (Code Red) as Ayala, and Katrina Durden (Doctor Strange) as Saevus. Red Sonja is being produced by Jeffrey Greenstein, Mark Canton, Courtney Solomon, Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, Andrea Sperling, Yariv Lerner, Jonathan Yunger, Les Weldon, Joe Gatta, and Tanner Mobley. Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short, Luke Lieberman, Nick Barrucci, and Dorothy Canton serve as executive producers. Are you looking forward to the new Red Sonja? Take a look at this set pic, then let us know by leaving a comment below. Source link via The Novum Times

John Cena announces pending retirement from WWE competition in 2025
You won’t be seeing John Cena in the ring for much longer. The pro wrestling icon announced his impending retirement from WWE Saturday, making a surprise appearance at the promotion’s “Money in the Bank” event in Toronto. “The 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last. The 2025 elimination chamber will be my last. And I’m here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas, Wrestlemania 2025 will be the last Wrestlemania I compete in,” Cena said to the live audience in a video the WWE posted to social media. “I want to say thank you.” John Cena announces his retirement during Money in the Bank at Scotiabank Arena on July 6, 2024. WWE / Getty Images “Thank you Cena!” The crowd chanted in response. The Massachusetts native also expressed his excitement over Netflix’s multi-billion dollar deal acquiring the rights to WWE Raw in January. “Raw makes history next year when it moves to Netflix. I’ve never been a part of Raw on Netflix. That is history, that is a first, and I will be there,” Cena said. Cena shed more light on his retirement in a post-show press conference, assuring that he would remain a part of the WWE even though his career as a performer was coming to an end — and promising “a long list of dates” between January and September. “People say they’re walking away, and two years later they come back. I want to set the record straight right now, I’m done. This is it,” Cena said in the press conference. “If you ever wanted to be a part of this one last time, we’re going to do it as big as we can and we’re fighting everybody and we hope you come enjoy the fun.” When asked about his feelings regarding Vince McMahon, the former WWE CEO and founder who stepped down in January amid allegations of sexual assault, Cena declined to give his opinion, saying instead the WWE was “in good hands” with parent company TKO Group Holdings. In an interview with Howard Stern in February, Cena said that he was a big advocate of accountability, but would remain a support system for McMahon for now. “I’ve openly said, I love the guy, I have a great relationship with the guy, and that’s that,” Cena said to Stern. The 47-year-old won 16 world championships over his nearly 20 years in the WWE, going toe-to-toe with the likes of Kurt Angle, Triple H and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. Outside of the ring, Cena released a studio rap album in 2005 and has appeared in several movies and television shows. As his acting career began to flourish with starring roles in projects such as “Bumblebee,” “F9: The Fast Saga,” and “The Suicide Squad,” his appearances in the ring diminished.  “There were many before me, there will be many after. I guess what I have left to do is say my thank yous before that chapter closes,” Cena said.
