Tips for freshening up your plush...

Using a lint rolling makes a surprising difference, and is very gentle.

You can lightly dust your plush with baking soda if it begins to hold any kind of odor.

Diluted laundry detergent (or gentle dish soap) can be used with cold water and a microfiber cloth to treat stains.

You can pat the surface of the plush dry, or hang them up if they become wet (not drenched) somehow.

NEVER USE FABRIC SOFTENER.

Please never place your plush in the drier. Do not leave your plush in direct sun, or use the heat setting on a hair drier on them, as it may damage the fabric!

In case of structural damage…

Remove the plush from children, pets or anyone else who may be tempted to swallow parts/contents of the plush.

For a tear in the fabric, or ripped seam, we recommend a using a ladder stitch (hidden stitch).

How Many Types of Upholstery Fabric are There?

When selecting furniture for your home or office, often the discussion about the choice of covering is between leather or fabric.  That part is relatively simple.  If the decision is to go with fabric, then a wide range of choices open as to what type of fabric.

In Australia, furniture sales are split between leather and fabric at about 30% to 70%. There are several reasons for this. Leather is often priced at a premium, therefore available to a smaller percentage of the market.  Leather is also seen as a more formal option, and therefore doesn’t have the regular purchasing behaviour that fabric lounges enjoy, being used in family room, rumpus rooms and frequently used areas around the home.

Fabric is also viewed as easier to clean.  This notion is a little misguided. Leather comes with it’s own protective clear top coat and can be easily wiped down with a damp cloth for minor clean ups.  Fabric on the other hand is absorbent to liquid and can stain much more easily.  Cleaning can be done by hand for isolated spills and dirt, however, to thoroughly clean the entire lounge, a professional is required with specialist machinery.

So why do the majority of Australian’s choose fabric over leather for their household furniture?  The simple answer is choice.  There are dozens of fabric types available providing various textures, looks and feels. Then within each fabric type, there are dozens more colours, patterns and tone making the options available huge. You can bet there is a fabric that is just right for the look of the living room redesign.  Just be prepared for a few hours scouring online stores, social sites and ultimately the showroom visits to check the comfort factor. When you do find the right option, it will make all the time researching worth it.

The main types of fabrics used in furniture upholstery include cotton, polyester, poly/cotton blends and linen.  Polyester is by far the most resilient option.  Being a manufactured product, this option is often the most cost effective as well. Synthetics can be mass produced with the base components rolled out in the hundreds, and sometimes thousands of meters.  Then various colour dyes or patterns can be applied for varieties, keeping costs per meter low.

Cotton is a wonderful natural choice.  It provides a soft feel, breaths well, however it isn’t as durable as synthetics. Pilling is a common issue for some cottons.  This is when the cotton fibres separate with friction and gather into small balls on the surface.  There are pilling tools that easily fix this problem. They act like beard trimmers, or hair clippers, shaving off the small cotton balls, leaving the surface looking fresh and new.

Manufactures have come up with a range of poly/cotton blends to find a balance between feel and durability.  Many manufacturers are also treating fabrics in the factory with stain protection spray to help with durability.  These treatments can be very effective in reducing stains from drink and food spills. This treatment is also available as a DIY option to increase the protective qualities of your fabric furniture.
