We’re talking about something very tricky this week. Finding your own artistic voice, or style. Every person who makes things has a unique voice.

I’d know a Stephen King/Phillipa Gregory/Anne Rice book even if you stripped all identifying information. I have friends who could drop things anonymously into the archive and I’d know it was them running on 3hrs of sleep with my belly empty of all but tic-tacs. Seeing them in their art is instinctive. It’s like facial recognition. No two people are identical and, while there might be a family resemblance between you and your mother, very rarely would anyone get either of you confused.

Having your own style is part of growing up as an artist. It’s when you stop being a blobby little infant and start to take shape as your own distinct person. Once someone has a style you can’t miss it and style is often the hallmark of someone who knows what they’re doing. But how do you get one? When does your acceptance letter come with your own personalized State Alchemist title? ‘Hannah of Canberra, the Comedy-with-Politics Writer.’?

What is style/voice?

Style is your perspective becoming visible in your writing. It’s the inescapable fact that is the feds dusted the story for prints they’d find your signature. It’s putting things in your own words.

Give twenty writers the same writing prompt and you’ll still get twenty different stories. Because each of those writers has a different history, culture, focus, and baggage. Especially baggage.

The most obvious sprouts of your style are your ‘tells’. Little blotches in the paint that forensics piece together. I use the word ‘ropable’ in my stories which is an Australian colloquialism. I spell ‘Mom’ as ‘Mum’ because that’s the Australian spelling and I’m not changing it for you. Pulling back a little I tend to zig when people think I will zag, I’m willing to pull the trigger on major character death, I like twists, and I write a lot about evil trans boys (most of whom aren’t on HRT).

All of this comes from a bedrock of you. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about queer topics, kink, horror and nostalgia. You can see that in what I write. I’m also a filthy leftist. A lot of these things inform my deeply held views and beliefs about the world. And that trickles down into my stories. A pessimist and an optimist will write two very different endings to an impossible situation. What you believe, deep in your guts, directs what you write. One way or another your characters are an interrogation of your beliefs.

Your beliefs are your own and they mean you always have something to say. The surface level stylistic choices are harder to manufacture but they do come eventually. They are the tool kit you use to express the deeper parts of your voice. They are the ways you decide to tell your stories. Ultimately this is great news because if you write long enough, whether you mean to or not, you’ll naturally develop your own voice.

But Van, how do a develop a voice/style?

Okay, don’t fear, most of this stuff you will be doing naturally but let’s break it down. However, an important thing to note before we start is that your voice is an extension of you. You will grow and change. So you style will grow and change. This is totally normal.

READ

If you want to make things you need to know a lot about those things that and that culture. If you want to paint you’ve got to consume and appreciate paintings but other artists. Great artists, shitty artists, unknown spectacular artists… And if you wanna write you’ve got to read. You’ll never know the full scope of your possible toolkit until you see all the different ways words can be used.

Read things that excite you first. Read the kind of stories you want to make. See how high the ceiling goes. See how many amazing things over people have done and see the losers who have still gotten published. Take the skill from the first group and the confidence from the second. Then read things outside your wheelhouse. Movies, anime, manga, graphic novels… they can all teach you things about telling stories. Expand your horizons. You want to have a healthy diet of media and health is all about diversity.

STEAL

If there’s something you love steal it. Claim it. Rewrite it. All art, going back centuries, is theft. Dante wrote fanfiction with self inserts and Shakespeare was so cringe he wrote real person fanfiction. You are not too good to steal. And, yes, you will write it badly at first. But you’ll learn things too.

COPY

Your style is a collection of all the other styles you have loved. Let those elements mix inside you. You’re allowed to be a mosaic of stolen parts. You are the sum of all your pieces. If you love Neil Gaiman spend a year trying to write like him. It won’t work. Your voice will inevitably colour things and crack through but that’s a good thing. You’re giving your voice enemies to fight so it can get stronger and clearer. Level up. In seeing how you’re different from the artists you admire you’ll see where you’re strongest (and weakest). You’ll lean what you are by seeing what you’re not.

Don’t be the next anyone, be the first you.

EXPERIMENT

You’ve got to try new things. Every stranger is a potential friend and every excursion is a possible new obsession. The same is true of art. Explore. Try stuff out and make a mess. Again, yes, you will do some of this badly. Some of this you’ll probably fuck up publicly. But that’s okay. You can’t get any better at writing if you never practice and part of learning is challenging yourself. Letting things stay new.

CHASE THE FUN

There are going to be topics you naturally gravitate towards. Let yourself. This is the stuff you’re passionate about. This is the stuff you have opinions on. This is your voice peaking out. And, no, not all of it will be ‘popular’ or ‘profitable’ or even ‘socially acceptable’ but your voice doesn’t give a shit about any of that. It’s a little kid who likes bugs and damnit it wants to watch the bug documentary for the 60th time. Do you know how many murder mystery novels Agatha Christie wrote? Write the same thing twelve different ways. Eighteen different ways. Who cares!

Sometimes you’re going to think it makes sense to write X but every part of you is going to want to write Y. Write Y. This is your unique approach scratching at you. And sometimes it will take you down the road less travelled. This is nothing to be afraid of. Some people will hate it, sure, but people will like it too and some people will even have desperately been needing it. Needing it like medicine.

WRITE A LOT

At the end of the day you have to practice but its more than that. Five poems can be very different. It’s hard to see how they have anything in common. There’s not enough data points. But if you have 200 poems you’re going to start to see a few reoccurring themes. Between them all there’s probably only going to be a handful of topics, really. That’s your voice.

You can’t be everything. You can only be yourself. It’s hard sometimes to see who you are because you’re looking from the inside out. Your voice sounds very different to you because you hear it from inside your head and mouth. Your ears perceive it differently from the people around you. Your artistic voice is exactly the same. It’s only till you give yourself more data you’ll see the major features of yourself.

CRINGE IS REAL

Yes, for ten years you might write about feminism. But then you might only write about civil wars for the next decade. That’s okay. You can’t be stagnant. People will come, people will go, but when you’re churning out the same thing, over and over, with no love or joy that’s when it becomes crap. And no one will read crap. The trashiest movies with heart are still a thousand times better than some generic air brushed blockbuster.

Honestly? You’re going to be a foreign traveller in some ports. You’re going to try some things that don’t work. You’re going to write some shit. You’re going to try some things you love and then one day just don’t. For a while all I wrote were meet-cutes and comedy pieces. Now I write things that are very different. But I learned some valuable skills about timing and delivery. About making people feel the way I wanted them too. That wasn’t wasted time.

Imagine your favourite author or artist. Hell, let’s take…. Don Bluth? He animated some truly spectacular children’s movies it he 90s. Thumbelina, The Secret of Nihm, etc. I love his art. And I love his art enough to love discovering the weird, random, other things he did before he found his niche. Turns out he can draw sexy as well as magical! Then there’s Jim Henson. I’m not huge on his mega franchise Muppet stuff. Not a fan. But Labyrinth? And that tiny 90s TV series he did? The Storyteller? One of my favourite pieces of media ever. I watch it on repeat. You are going to be these artists to someone else. They are not going to judge you for finding your way. They are going to revel in the different facets of you they can explore. Don’t be scared.

China compels Uyghurs to work in shoe factory that supplies Nike

"But there is new evidence to show that the Chinese authorities are moving Uighurs into government-directed labor around the country as part of the central government’s “Xinjiang Aid” initiative. For the party, this would help meet its poverty-alleviation goals but also allow it to further control the Uighur population and break familial bonds. “We can walk around, but we can’t go back [to Xinjiang] on our own,” said one Uighur woman in broken Mandarin as she browsed the street stalls at the factory gate on a recent afternoon. Nervous about being seen talking to a reporter, she quickly scurried away. When their shifts end, the Uighur workers — almost all women in their 20s or younger — use hand gestures and rudimentary Mandarin to buy dried fruit, socks and sanitary pads at the stalls. Then they walk around the corner, past the factory’s police station — adorned with Uighur writing telling them to “stay loyal to the party” and “have clear-cut discipline” — to dormitories where they live under constant supervision. The Uighur workers are afraid or unable to interact with anyone in this town, north of Qingdao, beyond the most superficial of transactions at the stalls or in local stores, vendors say. But the catalyst for their arrival here is well understood. “Everyone knows they didn’t come here of their own free will. They were brought here,” said one fruit-seller as she set up her stall. “The Uighurs had to come because they didn’t have an option. The government sent them here,” another vendor told The Washington Post." "The Taekwang factory is one of many where Uighurs are working “under conditions that strongly suggest forced labor” to make goods for more than 80 established global brands, according to a forthcoming report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, a Canberra-based think tank. “The Chinese government is now exporting the punitive culture and ethos of Xinjiang’s ‘reeducation camps’ to factories across China,” said Vicky Xiuzhong Xu, the study’s lead author. In some cases, they found evidence that Uighurs were transferred directly from internment camps to factories. “For the Chinese state, the goal is to ‘sinicize’ the Uighurs; for local governments, private brokers and factories, they get a sum of money per head in these labor transfers,” Xu said.   Asked about Uighur workers in the factory, Nike said that “we respect human rights in our extended value chain, and always strive to conduct business ethically and responsibly.”   “We are committed to upholding international labor standards globally,” said Nike spokeswoman Sandra Carreon-John, adding that its suppliers are “strictly prohibited from using any type of prison, forced, bonded or indentured labor.” "The researchers found 27 factories in nine Chinese provinces that have used Uighur workers hired through labor transfer programs from Xinjiang since 2017. The factories are owned by firms that feed into the supply chain of some of the world’s best-known companies, including Apple, Dell and Volkswagen, the report finds." "Inside, the workers’ ideology and behavior are closely monitored. At a purpose-built “psychological dredging office,” officials from Taekwang’s local women’s federation conduct “heart-to-heart” talks and provide psychological consulting to encourage integration, according to photos of the offices published by state media. 

Along the side, the facility resembles a prison. There are watchtowers with cameras pointed in all directions and barbed-wire fences atop the walls, which feature Communist Party propaganda posters extolling President Xi Jinping’s “China dream.” “All ethnicities are united as one family,” says one placard. 

There is a special police station equipped with facial-recognition cameras and other high-tech surveillance that workers must pass through when they enter and exit the factory. 

The Uighurs are segregated from the Han workers, both physically and by language, according to more than a dozen local merchants and workers who spoke to The Post about the situation inside the factory. 

“They don’t speak Mandarin, and we never have any interaction. We just happen to work in the same factory,” said one middle-aged Han woman as she left work for the day. 

“We have two cafeterias,” she said. “Chinese workers eat in one and Xinjiang workers go to a separate one. The Uighur workers are allowed to wander around near the compound, but have to return to their dorms later.” 

The workers live under the watchful eye of their cadre manager in dormitory buildings opposite the police station."

Mo worries mate. I’m not ‘doing’ Movember this year but I am running a little bit of a social experiment and growing a moustache to see if people react or even notice. I’m interested to see if the whole ‘facial hair for a cause’ thing still registers in the cultural psyche; or if we have reached a point of saturation. This Mirror-Bearer figure is the best-preserved example of portable Maya wood sculpture and one of the highlights of the Early Classic period (ca. A.D. 250–550) Maya art. The artist created this figure out of a solid piece of hardwood from the genus Cordia, known locally as bocote. Research determined a radiocarbon age for the wood of 1425 years before present (± 120 years), or a range of A.D. 410 to 650. It was said to have come from the border region between Guatemala and Tabasco, Mexico. Most likely, to judge from its extraordinary preservation, the findspot must have been a dry cave or well-sealed funerary chamber. The damage on its left side is the result of some wear or decay in that context, perhaps from resting against a surface or being subjected to varying passage of air. The person, a male, wears an elaborate knee-length woven skirt with ties that cover his navel. The waistband of the skirt shows a braided and fringed design with circular rosettes on the hips and at the spine. The hem of the skirt displays a jagged starburst-like pattern bordered above by a twisted braid and below by flaring fringe. The square knot at the figure’s stomach accentuates the realistic portrayal of the garment that sags between its slightly splayed knees. In addition, the Mirror-Bearer dons a shawl that goes around his neck and falls through his arms to connect to the rear rosette and is gathered in a bunch that sags away from the figure’s back. 

Clearly defined notches in the skirt and under the arms would have held a removable plaque approximately 5 inches square, probably covered in a mosaic mirror of pyrite or obsidian. The plaque would have been inserted under the arms and then hooked into the skirt notches. In fact, the artist thinned the shawl under the figure’s right arm by chiseling. This enabled a better "fit" for the plaque, which, at a roughly 60-degree angle, matched the pitch of the figure’s face. The Mirror-Bearer wears a distinct hairstyle or headdress and is shown with a curled moustache. The eye sockets are carved out, possibly to hold eye inlays of shell and obsidian. He arches his back, his head slightly tilted upward, his upper arms parallel to the ground, and his feet, which, though eroded, are folded under his body. He is shown holding his fists tightly to his chest, clutched under an elaborate pectoral. The pectoral ornament depicts an anthropomorphic portrait, with a headdress, ear flares, and a wide collar of jade beads. The elaborate multi-tiered ear ornaments of the figure consist of a flare through the stretched lobe, with two other jade discs hanging below it, terminating in a graceful portrait of a jawless reptilian creature. Such luxurious jade jewelry would have only been reserved for a high member of the elite. Surviving reddish iron oxide pigment on the surface indicates that he would have been brightly painted and vivid in effect. Although the artist seems to have depicted this individual at a small scale but with normal bodily proportions at approximately 1/3 scale, he is most likely a royal court dwarf, as seen in many palace scenes. The unusual facial hair, bulbous forehead, and profile are consistent with Maya artists’ depictions of individuals with achondroplasia or other types of genetic dwarfism. In Maya art, dwarves represented a type of antithetical beauty in contrast to the graceful Maize God. They were also very special in the eyes of Mesoamerican societies; they had divinatory powers and were sought after as entertainers in royal courts. The mirror-bearer to the ruler was an important role, sometimes filled by a woman, but more often by courtly dwarves. Their primary function was to reflect the image of Maya lords and ladies as those dignitaries preened in self-regard. Many of these mirror plaques have been found in Mexico and Central America, especially from the Classic Maya and Teotihuacan cultures. They are usually rectangular or circular ranging from 7 to 30 cm. in diameter. Mirrors are also known as objects for divination in Mesoamerica. The mirrors themselves were planes of luminous reflection, conceived as portals. The semi-permanence of a mirror held by a stone or wooden character implies that a mirror needed to be aimed at the ruler at all times when he was on the throne. There may be a connection with the wooden Mirror-Bearer and K’awiil, the Maya god of lightning, who is closely associated with mirrors or highly polished stones in artistic representations. When excavators at Tikal, Guatemala encountered a tomb they labeled Burial 195, it was flooded with sediment, allowing them to detect voids in the mud. When injected with plaster, the voids revealed small wooden deity figures covered in blue-green stucco from which the wood had rotted away. These wooden K’awiils are seen as holding a square elements in front of them, much like the Mirror-Bearer. Only two other wooden mirror-bearers are known. The first, in the Princeton University Art Museum (y1990-71), is of similar scale to the Met’s figure. The bearer is shown with standard bodily proportions but bears traces of an abnormal hairstyle and raised bump representations of scarification on the chin. Probably a youthful courtier, for young men also did much service to kings, he is adorned with a plain loincloth tied in the back and also exhibits vestiges of red pigment and stucco on the weathered surface. The only archaeologically excavated example of a wooden mirror-bearer comes from the site of Becan, Campeche, Mexico. It was recovered from a disturbed funerary chamber within the elevated tiers of Structure IX, the largest pyramid at the site. Along with the wooden sculpture, excavators found a conch shell (Strombus sp.), a frame with mosaic tesserae of hematite, three obsidian blades and fifteen Early Classic ceramic vessels. The wood was also identified as of the genus Cordia, perhaps chosen for its sturdiness but light weight relative to denser woods. Carved from one piece, the bearer is a standing male dwarf, leaning forward with his chin slightly raised and his arms held bent at the side of his body, which was originally covered in red pigment. There is other evidence that the Mirror-Bearer of the Metropolitan Museum would have been placed in the center of scenes of feasting, tribute, or other rituals. A wooden mirror-bearer may appear on a cylinder vessel in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (NGA 82.2292), originally made in the mid-8th century at the Ik’ kingdom of the area of Lake Petén Itza, Petén, Guatemala. The central figure is a portly king surrounded by his attendants, musicians, and even a hunchback and a dwarf drinking out of a large bowl. The key figure of this composition is the small dwarf holding the mirror: this is possibly an object of wood. It has a markedly differential color and scale that contrast with that of the nearby drinking dwarf, and resemble more closely that of the wooden mirror bearers from the Metropolitan. Though painted roughly two centuries after the creation of the Metropolitan’s Mirror-Bearer, this object appears in the company of other courtiers. Thus there was continuity through generations of portraying a wooden object in a group of humans as an equal participant in courtly life, gesturing and interacting with the king.
