I think it's so funny how Portuguese people (I'm Portuguese so don't come for me for saying this) wanna take credit in the smallest things and I think "taking credit" might not be the right words, so I will just explain, the new short film coming out with pedro pascal "strange way of life" that film has a Portuguese actor in it (not sure what role he is playing but pedro has posted photos with him) and the name of the movie is the name of a veryyyyy iconic song here in Portugal from a very well known and loved singer that is no longer alive, and during press for the last of us one Portuguese interviewer asked pedro about it and I have no idea what he said I wasn't paying attention but from what I've seen this film has NOTHING to do with the song or the singer they just used the name of the song and translated it to English and Spanish and people here were milking that shit, soooo that's what I mean and it's amusing to say the least

FADO - The Saddest Music in the World comes back to The Firehall
Tumblr media
FADO – The Saddest Music in the World presented by Puente Theatre & Firehall Arts Centre photo: Derek Ford FADO – The Saddest Music in the World is returning to The Firehall stage from Saturday, January 14 to Sunday, February 5, 2023. Produced by the Firehall Arts Centre and Victoria’s Puente Theatre, acclaimed Portuguese-Canadian playwright Elaine Ávila’s play, FADO, is a tale of love and ghosts set in the back alleys and brothels of old Lisbon.  Telling the story of a young woman confronting her country’s Fascist past and her own identity, the musical is interwoven with the heartbreaking national music of Portugal known as Fado, which means “fate.” The hit of the Victoria Fringe in 2018, FADO won the award for Favourite Musical, with B.C.’s own beloved Sara Marreiros playing the ghost of Amália Rodrigues, the queen of Fado. The production enjoyed a wildly successful run upon premiering at The Firehall in 2019.  In 2020, FADO won the inaugural JAYMAC Outstanding Production Award at the Greater Victoria Regional Arts Awards. The Firehall’s Artistic Producer Donna Spencer says, “It is great to be bringing this show back to our audiences as it was such a wonderful success when we last produced it in 2019. I am delighted that all of the original cast members are able to join us for this production run and to be working once again with our partners at Puente Theatre.” Directed by Mercedes Bátiz-Benét with performances by Sara Marreiros, Natércia Napoleão, Lucia Frangione, Judd Palmer, Pedro M. Siqueira, Chris Perrins, and Dan Weisenburger FADO – The Saddest Music in the World is onstage at The Firehall Arts Centre - Saturday, January 14 to Sunday, February 5, 2023. Visit firehallartscentre.ca for show information and tickets.

Propaganda
Amália Rodrigues (Fado, a Singer's Story)— I'm gonna be very real with you, the idea of calling Amália hot is kind of unfathomable to me because she's always seemed like some sort of near-mythical entity that went beyond that. But after submitting a bunch of other Portuguese movie stars it occurred to me I couldn't leave her out and she was a beautiful woman. So here she is. She was (and still is in the entire country's collective minds) a singer first and foremost, thee singer of all time actually (of fado). But she also did movies, quite a few of them, often about fado. As a singer she's basically the definition of fado, you wanna know what the genre is about you go listen to her. And be ready for her to make you cry. Linked example
Françoise Dorleac (L'homme de Rio, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort)— One of the first actresses I had a crush on and still is. I want to cry every time I think about her because she is one of many with a tragic story but I just want to include her because she deserves it
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

I've created this as a point of reference when writing for Pedro's characters, and I hope you find it useful. Even if you just want to learn more about the character. 🖤
FULL MASTERLIST OF PEDRO'S CHARACTERS ANALYSED
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FULL CHARACTER STUDY:
Basic Details:
Full Name: Silva (full name unconfirmed)
Nickname(s): None mentioned
Appears in: Strange Way Of Life, 2023 (first appearance on screen riding in distance at approx. 00:41 and face shot seen at approx. 01:04)

However the name is also commonly known in Mexico too. Silva speaks with a Spanish dialect. It is presumed he is living somewhere in the Wild West of America, possibly close to the border of Mexico, as he convinces his son to leave and ride across the border to Mexico which appears not to be too far away if Joe is simply riding on horseback.

Traits: Ruthless, romantic, devious
The film is titled after a Portuguese fado song by Amália Rodrigues. The song was released in 1959 and sung by Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso, and lip-synced by actor Manu Ríos playing a singer in the opening scenes, as Silva arrives in town to see Jake.
Silva is a rancher. A rancher is someone who owns or manages a large farm, especially one used for raising cattle, horses, or sheep.
Silva mentions he was previously a 'hired gun' back in the day with Jake, which means he was potentially a hit man or hired killer.
Silva is adept with the use of guns and a skilled shot. He deliberately misses shooting Jake in any vital organs.
Jake accuses Silva of only travelling to see him to get information out of him and to convince him to leave his son alone, rather than see him specifically. However, Silva mentions he wanted to see Jake sooner, but wasn't sure what reaction he would get after all the time that's passed. The conversation between them, and subsequently what Silva says to his son, indicates that Jake was right.
Being homosexual in the Wild West was largely unspoken and frowned upon. Same-sex relationships/encounters, were often kept private between the consenting individuals through fear of persecution and arrest, despite them being fairly common. Silva references this when he states, "You gonna kill me while I’m half undressed? How will you explain that? A dead man in your bed still smelling of cum!"
Hispanic decor decorates Silva's home in bright colours like fuchsia, yellow, orange and green, and he also has a statue of what appears to be of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, indicating he possibly has faith.
The costumes were provided by fashion house St Laurent for the characters in the movie, with custom pieces made specially, such as Silva's green jacket.
Fashion/Outfits:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Outfit 2 - (Waking up in Jake's bed scene) Orange/umber under shirt
Outfit 3 - (Tending to Jake & final scene) Yellow/brown plaid shirt, dark pin striped looking pants, black belt, black neckerchief
Accessories: Brown leather gun holster belt that carries spare bullets and his pistol, red neckerchief (which Jake kept), multicoloured striped blanket, possibly a woollen serape, which he carried rolled up on his horse and used in the desert when resting
Weapons Used:
Weapon(s): (Exact weapons pictured below)
Silva has a six shooter pistol, worn on the right side of his body in it's holster, typical for the time period in the Wild West. His exact model is unknown, but from images seen, it appears it could be a Colt Frontier Single Action Revolver.
Silva also owns a rifle, kept in a chest in his home. The exact model is unknown.
Tumblr media
Modes of Transport:
Vehicle(s):
Silva has a horse he rides across the desert to see Jake, which appears to be a dark brown stallion, and he has a whole ranch of horses that he tends to.

Have you seen this picture of Elvis? I get so exited when I see an Italian connection to Elvis. For example today I discovered he owned several Beretta guns that explicitly say “Made in Italy”. 😍
This is not quite the same, but yeah: BRAZIL! 🇧🇷
Tumblr media
OMG, YES! I'm crazy about that picture, I shared it here months ago. I totally have that feeling too! So cool you mentioned Elvis also collected Italian guns. I know just how you feel about it, dear. 🥹
Well, on Elvis and Brazil, there's a few connections I'll never get over... they're so dear to me.
First, during the last of Elvis' appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show (January 6, 1957), EP performed on the same day as a Brazilian singer named Leny Eversong. They didn't performed together, but I was so happy they got a couple pictures taken that day, backstage. Leny was/is one of the greatest female Brazilian voices. ♥ I don't know if that's true or not, but some places say Elvis told her she reminded him of his momma. Cute.

Another Elvis/Brazil connection took place during his Hollywood era. On my favorite Elvis movie "Live a Little, Love a Little" (1968) there's a song composed by the Brazilian musician, Luiz Bonfá. The song is "Almost In Love", a beautiful ballad which dreamy melody was borrowed from Luiz Bonfá's original 1965 song "Moonlight in Rio", while the lyrics Elvis sings was composed by Randy Starr. According to Luiz Bonfá, in 1968 he was working at MGM and someone (I won't remember who) told him Elvis needed a song for the soundtrack of this 1968 movie. That's when the Brazilian musician would lend his beautiful melody, an original composition, to what would become the song recorded by the King and featured in the 1968 movie "Live a Little, Love a Little" soundtrack.
Brazilian's Bossa Nova was very popular around the world in the 60s but, unfortunately, that was the only song composed by a Brazilian musician that the King ever recorded. Either way I'm so, so proud of it. ♥
youtube
youtube
Last but not least, years later, on November 30, 1972 Elvis attended Paul Anka and Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes's opening night at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, NV. They met backstage. Sergio Mendes is one of the greatest Brazilian musicians of all times. He was friends with Frank Sinatra (they toured in the 60s). About that night meeting the King, Sergio said Elvis went backstage to congratulate Paul and him for the concert, telling them he did enjoy the show.
Here's some pictures:

Sergio Mendes and Frank Sinatra toured together in 1968.
Those are the Brazilian connections to Elvis that I know of so far. I don't believe there's more but who knows?
According to Kathy Westemoreland on her Facebook page (as shared on this website), Elvis did enjoy the music of the Portuguese singer, Amalia Rodrigues, known as the "Queen of Fado". Brazilian Portuguese and the Portuguese from Portugal are not the same but they are similar, just like American English and British English, because Brazil was a Portugal colony when it was first "discovered" in 1500, that until 1822 when Brazil became an independent nation. That leaves me wondering if Elvis knew a little bit of Portuguese or not, having him listened to some songs in Portuguese (both from Portugal with the Fado music and from Brazil with our Bossa Nova). That would be so cool, but I've heard or seen nothing that could proved this yet.
Italian language, on the other side, Elvis knew at least one word: "Arrivederci" -- "Oh, no, that's Italian", he said after mistaken German for Italian during a press conference in Germany in 1958, giving us yet another cute moment of him to cherish.
Anyway. Thank you so much for being kind and reminding me of that Army Elvis picture with the Brazil showing in the map right behind him on the wall. I love that picture. It's so silly, but even the slightest connections of Elvis with our different nations thrills us, I know exactly how you feel about the Italian guns he collected. ♥
I bet you love the song "Heart of Rome" too, don't you? Or "It's Now or Never", an English version from an Italian song ("O Sole mio"). I think there's more connections of Elvis and Italy. I'd love to read all about it if you'd like to share, including pictures of the Italian guns Elvis had, if you have any of them.
Ohh, by the way, another cool thing I know connecting Elvis to Italy is that Elvis' suite at the former International Hotel then Hilton Hotel and now Westgate Hotel in Las Vegas, which unfortunately was remodeled and doesn't look like it was when Elvis was there, is named today after a region in central Italy! I've seen somewhere on Youtube that Elvis' actual penthouse suite, when remodeled, was split in two or three different villas. Well, one is named "Tuscany". SO COOL! ⚡🥹 ✨

My reactions and opinions on (almost) all songs on the Eurovision final
Sweden was kinda catchy and good. Not anywhere near the best but it was a nice start. Maybe a bit basic. 5/10
2. Ukraine was amazing. It gave me chills, the voices were amazing, the visuals were amazing. 9/10
3. Germany honestly didn't stand out to me. Idk, it wasn't bad exactly, but it also wasn't good? It was kinda just there. 3/10
4. Luxembourg was quite good. While it wasn't one of my faves, it was definitely a solid song and performance. 7/10
5. Yeah, no Netherlands. Keep in mind I only watched the finals and hadn't listened to any of the songs prior to it, so I haven't even heard the song yet. I don't think I will either. ?/10
6. Israel was amazing, Eden has an amazing voice, great stage presence, she looked absolutely etherial. The song conveys all the pain it's supposed to. No doubt my favourite and if I had voted I would have voted for her. 10/10
7. Lithuania, the song wasn't bad, kinda nice to listen to, the performance was also kinda good, but it didn't stand out long term. in fact while making this list i had to rewatch the performance because I remembered nothing of it. So yeah. Extra points for not being a basic english song. 5/10
8. Spain, I have complicated feelings about you. It definitely stood out. Sadly the most forgettable part of it was the singer, which is a very important part. She had presence, and the concept was definitely good and showy, but her voice was meh, a bit weak. I think the backup dancers lowkey carried the performace on their back. Overall, 6/10
9. I straight up did not like Estonia. I'm sorry, no offense. Also one of the guys looked like Michael from VSauce and that was very distracting, but I'm not docking points for that. 2/10
10. I know Ireland had some controversial reactions. BUT. I adored it. I'm sorry I did, it was one of my favourite performances, they did amazing, I have nothing to point out exactly. Idk, 9.5/10.
11. Latvia didn't do much. Kinda boring, forgettable. Maybe it was also not a great idea to put such a lacking performace right after one of the most amazing ones, that might have biased my opinion. 3/10
12. Greece wasn't my style of song but as it went on it kinda grew on me. It was catchy and fun. Not amazing exactly, for me personally, but solid, good. 6/10
13. Ok the UK, listen. I'm biased, because Olly Alexander is the main actor in one of my favourite shows and i think that skewed my view of the song. It was entertaining, fun, nice to watch. Nothing amazing, but good. 6/10
14. Norway, complicated feeling. It looked great, it sounded great, but something was lacking. It felt like they were trying to reach very far but not really getting there? Idk how to explain it. Something was missing from it. 6.5/10
15. Italy was quite good. I've seen people say it wasn't, but I don't see why. I liked it a lot, even tho it wasnt one of my top songs it was still really good. 7/10
16. I'm not sure it was my style, but Serbia still had a very solid song. It was good, and looked beautiful too, and her voice sounds magical. Good vibes. 7/10
17. For Finland... Did I love the song itself? No. Did I love the performance? Yes. I laughed so hard and it was so unique and funny and entertaining. Like, I could just laugh at how silly and random it was and that felt good. 8/10
18. Portugal, listen. You always bring sad fado-sounding songs. It's not that it's bad but people don't care. Get new material. That's boring, bring something fun that gets people smiling and dancing and it's catchy and unique. You're forgettable. Extra points for being my country, and for being Yom Kippur ready with all that white. But damn, I'm not pleased. 4/10
19. Armenia was great. I love when they include unique and personal vibes in these songs. This didn't feel like a boring generic english song. It felt unique, it had so many different and special elements and that made it really stand out to me, and I think they were SEVERELY underrated. 8/10
20. Cyprus was a bit basic and boring. In fact I again had to search for the video because I didn't even know what the Cyprus song was. 2.5/10
21. Switzerland won as we know. At first the song didn't stand out, but I think it's one of those songs that the more you listen the better it gets. Also the vibes? Perfect. Nemo slayed and I'm not upset at all with this win. 8/10
22. Slovenia was good, it was solid. Despite that, it wasn't great, but it had a nice energy to it and I had a good time watching it. 6.5/10
23. Croatia, I had heard rumors they were the favourite to win, and truly they placed first in the public votes. I can see why, they were great and it was very catchy, the energy was contagious and I cannot stop listening to it. Also, it's fun. 9.5/10
24. Georgia had a fun, energetic, powerful sounding song. I appreciated, it was a good listen, but it wasn't amazing, didn't stand out that much. 6.5/10
I didn't have time to watch France and Austria, sadly, because I had to go out, so no ratings there.
Note: I'm rating the songs and performances I watched!! I'm not commenting on personality or actions outside the stage, or some people here would sadly have had much lower scores

MUSIC ASKS!!!! 6, 11, and 15 please :)
6:A song that makes you want to dance
youtube
I'm so obsessed with this album that I'm doing exposure therapy just so that I can go see him live in a couple of months.
11:A song that you never get tired of
youtube
I know I'm probably repeating myself but considering this was my most played song from last year and just yesterday I was listening to it, I guess it qualifies.
15:A song that is a cover by another artist
youtube
Ok. I never plug the music of my country and this is the perfect opportunity. I love Fado. And my favourite female fado singer is Mariza and of course when she covers the absolute queen of Fado, Amália, then it's perfection. Also this song just gives me all the chills. As does this whole concert.

Amália Rebordão Rodrigues GCSE, GCIH
(Fundão, July 23, 1920 – Lisbon October 6, 1999), known as Amália Rodrigues , was a Portuguese singer and actress. Known as the Rainha do Fado ("Queen of Fado"), Rodrigues helped popularize fado worldwide and traveled internationally between the 1950s and 1970s. She also became one of the most important figures in the genre's development, becoming the pre-eminent female fadista during a 50-year recording and stage career. Amália was the main inspiration for other well-known international fado and popular music artists such as Madredeus, Dulce Pontes, and Mariza.

wait THAT'S what um contra ou outro is about😭 oh my god
For reference this is the song anon is referencing
youtube
This is how I described it: "The singer says you should stop playing video games because she wants to beat you up with her bare hands".
I'd say the actual meaning is probably better described as, I'm not kidding, "Go touch grass" however that will leave out the fact that she does indeed challenge the "you" in the song to an IRL fight.
I will put you a part of the lyrics here and then translate them for you
PT:
ENG:
Come
Show me what you're capable of
In that game
You're worth very little
Trade that addiction
For a new one
That the challenge
Is a brawl*
You choose the weapon
The strategy that never fails
The strongest side of the battle
Put the power on max
I give you the advantage
You with everything
And me with nothing
That even disarmed
I'm gonna teach you how to lose
So "corpo a corpo" is surprisingly difficult to translate. In this sense she is challenging the "you" to an IRL fight. I've seen some translations to wrestling or grappling but what it's meant to convey here is that she's basically saying "You wanna go? You wanna fucking go???? I'm gonna kick your pathetic ass"
The amount of Deolinda song where Ana, the singer, threatens physical violence on somebody is way more than you'd expect and she absolutely gives a very intimidating presence. I never thought of it that much before but she's one of the only people I know capable of making you believe only by singing that if she got her hands on you she'd rip you to pieces.
The song Fado Toninho is my favourite instance of this where you get the impression that you're not sure if she really wants to fuck the guy or do the equivalent of this:
Tumblr media
Like, this is a love song, but the lyrics look like this
PT:
De peito feito ele ginga o passo Arregaça as mangas e escarra pra o lado Anda lá, ó meu cobardolas! Vem cá mano a mano! Eu faço e aconteço Eu posso, eu mando!
ENG:
Showing his chest he readies his step
He puts up his sleeves and spits to the side
Come here, you coward!
Let's go you and me!
I make it happen, I'm the moment, I'm in command!
(If you translate directly the last part doesn't say I'm the moment but she's basically using a bunch of expression that convay that she's the boss around these parts)
The literal last sentence of the song is "Se não me seguram dou cabo de ti" which means "If nobody holds me I'm gonna destroy you".
And she vocalises it so perfectly. The way she sings "Eu mando!" (I'm the one in command) it more of a "EU MANDO!!!" as she puts so much emphasis on it. She is the essence of these emojis 😊🥰😘💪🤬💀🚑. She IS the girlboss.
