A chunk of pages from the 5th chapter of Fairmeadow - If you love intense and uncomfortable character dynamics be prepared for uhhh A LOT OF THAT later on in this chapter.
If you're new to the story, now's a great time to jump in!! Less than 200 pages in (perfectly bingable length? u decide) and lots of idiot characters I will make you love so help me god
Fairmeadow is a post-epic fantasy webcomic inspired by radical communes and the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Living In the shadow of a century-long war, a remote pacifist commune takes in a wounded Orcish soldier and falls into turmoil as their utopian vision is tested in the face of massive change.

MORE #QueerComicsNow 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ Last week, we shared a spotlight on just a few of our comics with LGBTQ+ characters, creators, and themes. That's just the tip of the iceberg. We're back with another round of recommendations below!
Little Tiny Things by @cloverscomics
What are the little things that move us? The simple joys that warm our bodies and our hearts? The micro life of insects that influence our world more than we think? The tiny steps we make everyday to have a happier tomorrow? It's the Little, Tiny, Things.
Fairmeadow by @hagofbolding
Goma, a wayward Orcish soldier, finds herself in Fairmeadow, a commune of pacifists deep in the Cascadian wilderness. Isolation has allowed the commune to thrive in the shadow of a century-long war, but Goma’s arrival brings troubling reminders of the world outside to those who have settled there in search of respite.  Fairmeadow’s enigmatic leader, Sanctuary, finds his utopian vision challenged as he struggles to keep the peace. Their self-sufficiency exists on thin margins - margins that threaten to break if Goma cannot learn to live alongside those who she has sworn to fight. Fairmeadow is a post-epic fantasy drama inspired by the counter-cultural movements of the late 60’s, the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, and tabletop RPG’s. It’s about the collision of idealism against pragmatism, reckoning with the consequences of dropping out, and trying to make its readers want to go on a hike.
Magical How? by @eyugho
Gabe and Booker were just regular guys until a golf ball appears, offering them magical abilities. Booker does not want to get into this at all, but Gabe takes the bracelet and transforms into a Magical... complete with uniform!
Gzhel Guardian by Atla Hrafney & Anya
Deep underground, in a place far away from our world, exists the Railway System. A complex, mysterious network of trains, towns and mechanical monsters, these communities are open and known only to a few on Earth. Central to these communities are Guardians, people chosen at random and adorned with power. Leo is one such Guardian, and even though their burn-out and depression has taken hold of them, they have one last job to finish. Gzhel Guardian is a Russian fantasy LGBT+ webcomic inspired by folklore and illustrated in gorgeous watercolor pages.

oh wow, great to find someone else enjoying Fairmeadow!! amazing art, and I've loved the worldbuilding/designs for Goma and the orcs.
Yay another Fairmeadow fan! A friend recently recommended it to me and I now recommend it to anyone else looking for good thoughtful fantasy webcomics that play with the genre's conventions. :3 Here's the pitch for the other people reading this post who haven't read Fairmeadow yet: "An orcish warrior joins an isolated pacifist commune-- can she learn to live alongside those she swore to fight?"
It also has gorgeous art, especially the landscapes/backgrounds! I've noticed a lot of webcomic artists are either good at drawing expressive characters or expressive backgrounds, but this artist is great at both. The worldbuilding is conveyed pretty subtly/naturally through dialogue, and the good writing in combination with the beautiful detailed background illustrations really helps sell the story's fantasy world as a 'real' place. It's also pretty queer, though it's far more focused on 'the emotional and societal consequences of war' than on romance. tl;dr: I know half of all fantasy webcomics try to do a 'what if the monsters/orcs were Sympathetic" storyline, but this is genuinely one of the best-written examples of that!

Worldbuiltober day 5: Dance.
Tumblr media
Many cultures dance. The dances are as varied as the people that perform them. In Lanjari, there are more dances than names for them! From top to bottom, left to right:
Dragonborn stomping dance. Performed in trios, this earthshaking rythm dance focuses on in-out movements, keeping beat, power, and generally having a very loud and fun time!
Elvish autumn dance. This duo dance is performed in four parts, one for each of the seasons. It is a graceful, illustrative performance that requires the dancers to be in sync, daring and very flexible. Dancers go lower and lower, all while keeping their leaf-shaped dangles spinning.
Dwarvish wrestle act. Some might call it a performance, some a dance, some a wrestling match- this powerful display of strength requires mock wrestling the partner with specific steps until a winner is declared by the audience. Moves include pushing, pulling, stomping in rythm, mirroring each others movements and loud yells.
Orc chant performance. This dance, performed with voice, shield and spear, is used to summon good luck and ferocity. It is an awesome display of weight, power and fast spear movements. Some call the chanting deafening, especially when performed in a large group.
Halfling jumping jig. Halflings specialize in fast-paced, tap-dance like footwork. This dance is focused on jumps with increasing complexity, all while keeping very tight beat! The first to lose their rythm and not make their way back to the dancing surface on the beat loses.
Bluebolt seated ribbon dance. Thought to have originated in a way to symbolise wings and soaring flight, this thin ribbon dance involves rolling and posing all while keeping the ribbon flowing beautifully.
Orc chant dance inspired by the Fairmeadow comic by Kendra P.

it is a Saturday and I am high on caffeine and sunlight - time to make a miscellaneous "comics I love" list! (Note: I'm grouping by layout, not country of origin)
Manga:
Aharen-san wa harakenai (Aharen-san is unfathomable): gag-comedy about a very stoic school girl and the equally stoic classmate who wildly misinterprets what she does. (Very sweet, absurd humor, a bit of romance, you will learn so much trivia)
Angel Densetsu (Legend of an Angel): gag-comedy with some martial arts tropes. A guy with the face of a thug and the heart of a saint stumbles into many a misunderstanding (and gains a few true companions along the way) - Bonus: you get to see the artist grow as the series goes on
Kouishou Radio (After effects Radio) - a collection of horror vignettes around a "God of Hair" which start coming together slowly to a very "oooh Fuck" effect.
Seihantai Kimi wa Boku (You and I are polar opposites) - very sweet and funny, cozy rom-com slice of live. A gyaru and a stoic loner fall in mutual love and navigate this first relationship together, helped by their friend group.
Radiant - action-fantasy. Imagine One Piece with witches, an inquisition, curses and it taking place in the sky. The MC is a lil shit for 1 1/2 volumes but my god if you like shounen-style fantasy-action, you're in for a treat.
Webtoons:
Cursed Princess Club - fantasy-romance-dramedy. "you're ugly" having her heart broken by these words, the sweet but not traditionally attractive youngest princess of the pastel kingdom runs into the forest and stumbles upon a club full of cursed princess. Deals with finding self-love in many, many forms. It is also "send screenshots to friends"-HILARIOUS.
The Dummy's Dummy - urban fantasy with horror elements. A monster of the week style story with a psychic girl and the monster-fighting marionette at her side. Has a lovely goth vibe.
... oh no the caffeine has ran out, so I'll add a few shorter entries:
Webcomics:
Fairmeadow (fairmeadowcomic.com): ex-soldier Orc meets pacifist commune. Hilarity(?) ensues. If you like dissecting interpersonal conflicts and gorgeous nature drawings, you will have a field day (hah).
Tiger, tiger (tigertigercomic.com): seafaring adventures with eldritch monsters, some romance and a great cast of characters (absolute nerd for sea sponges, a pirate with very healthy self-esteem, a mustachioed himbo and an anxious boye who does not deserve any of this)
Other comics:
Beautiful Darkness - hey, wanna remember how fucked-up yet whimsical childhood was?? NO??? well too bad, get shrinked to 2 cm size and try not to die in the wilderness.
Une semaine the bonté - surrealist collage work. Makes no sense and I love it. It feels like someone is pouring melting butter over my brain.
Hitman (DC) - vampires, superman, family drama back in ireland, zombie seals, demons and a surprisingly hard-hitting (and surprisingly funny) comic series. Gritty, grimy, tasteless in its humor... and very unapologetically so. Very of its time, but also very entertaining and varied.
