Khajuraho

Khajuraho was an ancient city in the Madhya Pradesh region of northern India. From the 10th to 12th century CE it was the capital of the Chandella kings who ruled Bundelkhand. Despite Khajuraho's once great reputation as an important cultural centre there are no surviving non-religious buildings, but the presence of 35 Hindu and Jain temples make it one of the most significant historical sites in India today and worthy of its name given by the 11th century CE Muslim historian Abu Rihan Alberuni as 'the City of the Gods'. Khajuraho is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Architectural Highlights

Most of the temples at Khajuraho were built using sandstone but four also used granite in their construction. In the latter group is the Chaunsat Yogini (64 tantric goddesses), built c. 875-900 CE, which has 64 shrine rooms arranged around a rectangular courtyard. Next in the site's development came the Lalguan Mahadeva, Brahma, and Matangesvara temples which are all quite plain in design and decoration compared to the later temples.

The majority of temples at Khajuraho were constructed between 950 and 1050 CE and are either Hindu (Saiva or Vaisnava) or Jain. The most famous is the Kandariya Mahadeo built in the early 11th century CE and dedicated to Shiva. The more or less contemporary Laksmana temple was built in 954 CE by King Dhanga (r. 950-999 CE) to celebrate independence from the Gurjara-Pratihara rulers and has a similar layout and exterior to the Kandariya Mahadeo. So too does the Visvanatha temple (c. 1002 CE) which was designed by Sutradhara Chhichchha. Both temples have shrines at each corner of their terrace platforms. The Laksmana was dedicated to Vishnu and its terrace is of particular note as it carries a narrative frieze running around all four sides: Elephants, warriors, hunters, and musicians form a procession watched by a ruler and his female attendants.

Other notable temples at the site include the single-towered Caturbhuja and Vamana, the squat Matulunga, and the rectangular, more austere Parshvanatha Jain temple with its unique shrine added to the rear of the building (c. 950-970 CE). Probably the latest temple at Khajuraho is the Duladeo which was built on a star-plan.

Shiva Purana is related to Shaivism. This Purana has 6 sections and 24000 verses. In this Purana, a comprehensive description of Lord Shiva’s various forms, incarnations, Jyotirlingas, devotees, and devotion has been said. In the Shiv Purana, a detailed description of the welfare, mystery, glory, and worship of Lord Mahadev of the gods has been described in detail.

In the Shiva Purana, apart from the glory and devotion of Lord Shiva, the method of worship, many enlightening narratives and instructive stories have been beautifully described and the grandest personality of Lord Shiva has been glorified. Lord Shiva who is Swayambhu, an Eternal, Supreme Being, Universal Consciousness, and the basis of cosmic existence.

In almost all the Puranas, Lord Shiva has been described as an idol of sacrifice, penance, love, and compassion. Lord Shiva is easily pleased and is the one who gives desired results. But in the Shiva Purana, a special description has been given about the life character of Lord Shiva, his lifestyle, marriage, and the origin of his sons. There are 6 sections in this Purana, which are as follows.

1) Vidyeshwara Samhita 2) Rudra Samhita 3) Kotirudra Samhita 4) Kailas Samhita 5) Air Code 6) Uma Samhita

12 Jyotirlingas in Shiva Purana:- In the Kotirudra Samhita of Shiva Purana, 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva have been described in detail. This very ancient 12 Jyotirlinga form of Shivling is the abode of Lord Shiva. The worship of 12 Jyotirlingas has a special significance in Sanatan Dharma. Following are the names of these 12 Jyotirlingas.

1) Somnath Jyotirlinga Located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, this Jyotirlinga is considered to be the oldest and the first Jyotirlinga of the earth. According to Shiva Purana, Somnath Jyotirlinga has been established by Chandradev himself.

2) Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga This Jyotirlinga is situated on the banks of river Krishna in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India on a mountain named Srisailam.

3) Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga This Jyotirlinga is located in Ujjain city of Madhya Pradesh. This is the only Jyotirlinga facing south. The Bhasmari of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is famous all over the world.

4) Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is located in the Malwa region near Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The shape of Om is formed here due to the mountain and river flowing around this Jyotirlinga.

5) Kedarnath Jyotirlinga This Jyotirlinga is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state on the Kedar peak of the Himalayas.

6) Bhimashankar Jyotirling This Jyotirlinga is situated on a mountain called Sahyadri near Pune in Maharashtra.

7) Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirling This Jyotirlinga is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This Jyotirlinga is also known as Vishweshwar.

8 ) Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga This Jyotirlinga is located in the Nashik district of Maharashtra state. This is a mountain named Brahmagiri near the Jyotirlinga. The Godavari river originates from the Brahmagiri mountain.

9) Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga This Jyotirlinga is located near Santhal Pargana of Jharkhand state. This Vaidyanath Dham of Lord Shiva has been called Chitabhoomi.

10) Nageshwar Jyotirling This Jyotirlinga is located in the Dwarka region of Gujarat.

11) Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga This Jyotirlinga is located in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. This Jyotirlinga was made by Lord Shri Ram himself with his own hands.

12) Ghrishneshwar Temple Jyotirlinga This Jyotirlinga is located near Daulatabad in Maharashtra. This is the last Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Significance of Shiva Purana:- Shiva Purana has great importance for the devotee of Shiva. In the Shiva Purana, the elemental interpretation, mystery, glory, and worship of the benevolent form of Lord ‘Shiva’ of Parabrahm Parmeshwar have been described. Reading the Shiva Purana and listening to it with devotion is the best form of worship. According to Shiva Purana, a man reaches the highest position after attaining Shiva devotion, he attains Shivapada. By listening to this Purana selflessly and reverently, one becomes free from all sins and enjoys great and excellent pleasures in this life, and finally attains Shivaloka.

The Hindu mythology ask reminds me of the times I user to make family trees and flow charts of Ramayana and Mahabharata. So this is gonna be a long one..sorry!

1. Amar Chitra Katha is a great place to start, you can also watch the old televised cartoon versions of the same...I used to love them..they are a little biased but a great place to start! You ll find them on the big magic channel (if ur from India..idk if it still exists tho lmao) or maybe even on youtube. There are soap operas too if you like drama and stuff...Mahabharata has a super famous one!

2. I LOVED THE KRISHNA CARTOONS TOO. It was called Little Krishna- the prince of Vrindavan (dat music is still my fav). I used to cry every Sunday to watch it on TV.

3. Idk if this is ur thing but I used to visit old libraries and ask for books from there, librarians are actually super cool and underrated. I used to tell them I want the full version of Mahabharata..bonus if it's in those maroon hardbound covers cuz that means it's more inclusive of info)

4. If you want to learn about other Hindu gods like Shiva and Brahma, you can start with short stories type books by Tiny Tot Publications (again idk if they still publish..my books are so old😭)

5. You can go to any famous temple in your area too and try to find stories behind that. (I once visited a temple where people believe Krishna comes every night with Radha for Rasleela)

6. I have lately been really enjoying Amish and Devdutt Patnaik. They wrote books from Raavan, Sita and Draupadi's POV. Can you imagine that? They are very unbiased. You should definitely check them out.

Last tip as someone who has been a Hindu mythology reader since I was like 5

You can never know every story. You ll never find one book that has every story. This was something that used to annoy my brain because I was like if there's a story about the king's maid's daughter...I need to know that too. But it's impossible, trust me. So just keep taking info as you can and DO NOT TRY TO FIGURE OUT CHRONOLOGY OF THE EVENTS. You ll go crazy. Like basics within Ramayana and Mahabharata is fine but the other short stories will make u go crazy.

Shedim take many forms and have as many origins as they do appearances. The most famous of them boast rooster feet, and names of grand importance, like Lilith or Asmodeus. They are the children of the serpent of Eden to some, the offspring of the Night Demon herself, or simple mistakes of God’s own creation, when the being itself took a long rest on the seventh day of Shabbat. They are the remnants of gods, the ruin and what became of the deities who accepted human sacrifice, dying out as the age of Adonai came into fruition. 

In this story, however, these Shedim are simple–simple creatures living simple lives. Their names are Asher and Dahlia, and originally took the form of a simple fly. 

Flies are fascinating creatures you know. 

They are not the first beings to welcome a new life into this world, nor are they the last, but instead lie precisely in the middle. The fly is there when the child eats its first fruit, says its first words, has their first kiss. The fly remains upon the wall as the child grows, grows into an adult, then into a parent, a grandparent, an elder. And the fly is there, in the last moments of death, now unstuck from the wall, and buzzing in the reflection of the eye. The fly remains, as the body is tended to, as the funeral is performed, and as the family begins to sit shiva. And in the end, the fly follows the procession, led by the temple elders, to the graveyard.

Anaya Nayanar, also known as Anaya and Anayar, is a Nayanar saint, venerated in the Hindu Shaivite sect. Anaya is considered to be the 14th of the 63 Nayanars. His playing of the Panchakshara (five-syllable mantra 🌟na, ma, śi, vā, ya🌟) on his flute so pleased the god, Shiva, that he took Anaya away to the eternal world.

The life of Anayar is described in the Thirutthondar Puranam (Periya Puranam) by Sekkizhar, which documents the Histories of the 63 Nayanmar. Anaya is described as a cowherd (ஆயர் or Aayar). Anayar was born and lived his life in Tirumangalam (Thirumangalam), currently in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Tirumangalam is a place of pilgrimage, famous for its Samavedeshvarar Temple, dedicated to Supreme Lord Shiva. Aanaayar used to tend cows. He used to take the cows for grazing in the pastures outside of the town. He used to protect the cattle from disease and beasts of prey. Anayar used to smear Sacred Ash on His body. In the meadows, He used to play the Panchakshara (Five-Letter) Mantra of Supreme Lord Shiva on his flute. Music was his way of worshipping Lord Shiva. A verse from Periya Puranam tells about how he crafted a flute from bamboo, as prescribed in the science of music (Gandharva Shastra).

One day at the onset of the monsoon, Anayar started playing the Holy Five Letter Word on His flute under the Konrai tree, which is sacred to Lord Shiva, in a garden of blossoming konrai trees. The Periya Puranam devotes several verses to describe the natural beauty of the location.

✨Aanaaya Naayanaar spread sweet melody all aound, playing on his flute with supreme skill, according to the prescribed technique. The basic note of the music - Panchaakshara - streamed sweetly like celestial nectar mixed with honey into the ears of the listeners. Entranced by this the herd of cows forgot to chew the cud, after cropping the tender shoots of grass; the little calves with mouths on the udders of the cows let the foaming milk drip down on the ground; the might-horned bulls and the wild animals like the deer came near, with the hairs of the body standing on end. The dancing peacocks stood still; the flocks of birds with their hearts filled with melody, kept quiet as in a swoon; the herdsmen left tasks incomplete. The 'Naagas', inhabitants of the underworld came out of their caverns; the celestial ladies gathered in the heavens and stood quite charmed; the other denizens of the outer space - the Gandharvas, Charanaas and the Kinnaras - too crowded the sky in their chariots. The heavenly damsels feeding their pet parrots on nectar under the shade of the Kalpaka tree, hurried to drink in the sweet music. Both the weak and the strong were caught in the same spell - the serpent with the venomous fangs leaned gently on the peacock; the unmoving lion and the huge tusker kept company; the deer with the grass in its mouth stood by the side of the tiger. ✨All nature too came under this spell - the wind ceased to blow and the blossoming branches of the trees stirred not; the streams and brooks meshing down the mountain stopped dead in their tracks; the clouds lay quiet and shed no drops of rain; the lightning did not flash and there was not a ripple in the wide seas. ✨Thus all things - movable and immovable - lay ensnared in the mesh of the nectarine music that flowed from the sweet-red lips of Aanaaya Naayanaar touching his flute. ✨Ah, the sweet music welling up from the gushing love of the player for the feet of his Lord, which filled earth and heaven then filled the ears of the indwelling Lord dancing in the Golden Hall, hard to reach for all those lacking in real Love.

✨Next, the Lord, with His consort, the very soul of compassion - He from whom all sound and music arise - the three-eyed Supreme being - appeared in the heavens, seated on His Bull-Mount. ✨His crowding hosts kept utterly quiet, so as not to disturb the music of the Panchakshara which the dancing Lord relished so much! ✨The Lord then declared: "Come unto Me, in the same pose as you now are, to enable the righteous devotees to savour your music ever" ✨This Naayanaar willingly complied! ✨The celestials rained flowers on earth; the sages chanted the Vedic hymns, while the flute continued with melody. ✨The Lord and His devotee then entered the Golden Hall at Chidambaram.

Note: Rasikas may recall in this context the techniques of music portrayed in Silappadhikaram and the effect of Sri Krishna playing on His flute graphically described by Sage Suka, Periyaazhvaar and Arunagirinathar.
