Hi! I'm Mod Cerulean (he/him). I've been wearing and studying Lolita Fashion since 2014. I made this blog for funsies, since I like putting together coords and I don't get to wear it as often as I used to. My favorite styles are Gothic, Hime, and Bittersweet - I often like to blend the three. ♡

What can I do here?

Well, the fun part is I take requests! I do a variety of subjects, whether it be from fandom, your own oc, or a general concept/theme. I love a challenge! You can submit pictures of your ocs/the character you want, or send a link to a wiki or toyhou.se. I require visual references for ocs. Get funky with it! If you end up drawing the character (original or fandom) in the coord, tag me so I can see :D

However, I can be a bit selective, as there are some fandoms I don't want to do. I won't make an exhaustive list unless requested. If I am unable to take your request I will let you know if you were off anon. Keep in mind I have a full time job and I am very busy - so your request may take a while. :3 But its worth the wait!

BEHIND THE BOWS: bread-chan.

While browsing for my fandom post, I came across an interesting poster.. this is the story of bread-chan, who had 1 dream.

She expressed her feelings openly, but maybe a bit too much, as her friend also submitted a secret the very same day.

It seems the friend was very tired of hearing about this. Nonetheless, shouldn't friends support each other's dreams?

Look, it made her cry. The very next post, she had to find out about this betrayal. It isn't stupid to want to be a baguette themed lolita. Nothing is too silly for our frills. She had supporters, though.

But our protagonist's soul had developed like yeast. Instead of blossoming and flowering, bread chan floured into her anger.

Ouch! Unfortunately for us, I don't think any of the other posts were made by bread-chan.. but her ambition never died. The rest of the year, other posts continued to discuss the bread coord.

Maybe we didn't have a bread dress, but some tried offering comfort..

There seemed to be hope.

And other fashions were already on it.

im trying to phrase this in a way that makes sense and isnt too long but its not working so: if i had a zelda print jsk but coorded it with all non zelda themed stuff, would it be cosplay lolita? (and also does this apply to the AP x Mario/Sailor Moon stuff?)

(the jsk is/will be made using ur tutorials btw!! you inspired me to keep sewing and designing through my Problems™️ - plus this means it'll have good lace and the right shape etc etc, im just curious if you as a person i appreciate from across the world have an opinion on fandom references vs cosplay)

So I did a post specifically on adapting Zelda looks into lolita fashion back in 2017.

And back in April when I was still able to stand, I did a coord with a Zelda print. I made the dress back in 2016 as part of a school project, but the coord involved a lot of new lolita fashion pieces that I've obtained since then. The bottom part of the skirt is the opening graphics from Wind Waker.

The really short answer is a JSK made with a printed fabric can be lolita and isn't a cosplay, but you need to make sure that the print is suitable for lolita fashion. I did a guide on that too.

But there's plenty of dresses with Sanrio characters that aren't Hello Kitty cosplays. An interesting brand to check out with regards to this is Secret Honey, who has a lot of disney tie-in dresses. You can see the difference between a themed dress and a cosplay dress.

Cosplay is cosplay. It's the art of dressing up as a character. In many cases, that's about creating or recreating specific garments worn in the source material. In cases where specific garments aren't being used, it's about looking like the character, and wearing clothing that is like what they could have worn. A good cosplay is going to go beyond just the garment and be a complete look, a head-to-toe costume.

Different from cosplay is things like Disneybounding, of which I guess the non-Disney version would be stealth cosplay. Disneybounding is dressing up in a way that resembles or reflects a character, without wearing a costume. This comes from Disney Parks policy that adults can't be wearing costumes in the park. A Disneybound look can distinctly resemble a character, but has to be constructed of modern(ish), mainstream(ish) garments. The whole look cannot be something that would look out of place at a Denny's at 2AM.

Themed lolita falls much more into Disneybounding than it does cosplay. The main difference is that a Disneybound look is composed of mainstream fashion pieces that resemble or remind you of a character. A themed lolita look is constructed out of pieces that can stand alone as lolita pieces, but that all fit a larger theme.

For an example on my coord up there, the skirt is a themed piece. The green linen was chosen specifically to look like Link's traditional green outfit, and the print is images from the game. My ocarina necklace is also a piece that I would not normally wear with a lolita look. However, the blouse is from Innocent World, a lolita brand. The overskirt was made by a lolita brand and was designed to be a lolita overskirt. The headbows aren't Zelda-themed and can be worn with other coordinates. The legwear was just going for color balance and doesn't actually add to the concept of the coord and objectively speaking, the bottom half of the coord is too punk-themed to really work with the top half of the coord. One of the really great things about wearing lolita fashion is that you can look at past looks, recognize that you like them, but also see things to improve on in the future. This is great because it allows you to experience wearing the same pieces repeatedly without wearing the same outfits repeatedly.

Regarding theme, a lot of brands have recurring themes and characters (Usakumya and Kuma Kumya are a good pair to start your research on). They make a lot of elements that are themed after these characters, but those pieces are themed lolita pieces, and not cosplay. (If anyone has ever done an actual Usakumya cosplay, please let me know ASAP. I need to see that).

Many people who wear lolita fashion are also cosplayers, and so the community has really tried to stop using "cosplay" as a negative term to describe poorly done lolita. You'll run into "cosplay lolita" still used in context of characters like Wednesday or Misa Amane, where the author or artist decided that they wear "gothic lolita" and didn't actually do a ton of research.

This means that people who wear their source material's "gothic lolita" look are really wearing a poorly-researched outfit made by someone who didn't really know what they're doing. People will also use the term "cosplay lolita" to describe a poorly-researched outfit made by someone who didn't really know what they were doing, as if "that's the sort of outfit you'd see as a cosplay of a character." However, it's a term that's falling out of favor and really isn't very nice to cosplayers who often spend a LOT of money and time on their cosplays.

K so Phil's back and everything is fine (lol not really) but I wanna talk about something.

So a bunch of people have been kidnapped so far right? Something I find interesting about Phil getting kidnapped is that everyone in the fandom was so sure that people (usually Tubbo, Fit, Etoile, Forever, and or Missa) would A) notice and B) go find him. Why? Why was that the logical conclusion? Not once, after someone has gone missing, have people gone out on search party. The closest you could get was Celbit but that was only because he posted coords in chat and asked for help. Not even Quackity, who was SEEN being kidnapped had a search party after him. So why Phil? There technically wasn't even any hard evidence that he WAS kidnapped! mans left any changes behind locked doors and chests and even too the book w/ the coords WITH HIM. Phil left no note or clues behind and even if he did, the federation went back and changed it to look like it was fine! (Bad went to look and we can see Phil's chest re organized) SO why was the whole fandom SO sure that Phil would be rescued? That's not a thing on this island people do. Not for any bad reason, mostly because it's so normal now and they usually turn up soon anyway.

I don't have much of a point to this and it doesn't matter much not since Phil's back (What even happened there, what was the point?? What did they do to him???) but it was just so interesting I wanted to say something.

Well, according to Martyn

So, canonically Jimmy isn't a Listener but Martyn didn't make this post until this past November (i should know he said this as a comment and reblog on my post)

But I went 3 years thinking Jimmy was a listener so here are the Listener Jimmy thoughts.

But first, Canon:

The Listeners are not brought until Jimmy's episode "DON'T TELL ANYBODY ABOUT THIS" and Martyn's episode "TELL NOBODY" and they only introduced themselves to Martyn and Jimmy, our beloved Property Police, and this is before the end, they are around before Grian leaves which is something some people forget

The next time we see them is Jimmy's episode 98 and everyone (who hasn't left)'s first episode post dragon

In Jimmy's Pov they give him a mission, to give all the remaining Evolutionists an ender chest (since the Watchers are evicting everyone from spawn and the Evolutionists are only allowed to carry to New Spawn whatever they can carry in their inventory) and everyone else gets to spawn after Jimmy and find the enderchests (with notes from the Listeners, this is the first time the Evolutionists [excluding the property police] hear about the Listeners) and head to new spawn,. Jimmy doesn't get there until he finds Martyn's signs giving him the coords of New Spawn. This is what lead us to believe Jimmy was a Listener until The Martyn Post (image shown above, I have named it The Martyn Post)

After this we don't hear from the Listeners until Martyn's finale (not the actual finale it just is from his pov and is the lore related thing of the season [if I am correct]) where the Listeners "free" the Evolutionists (now excluding Jimmy, BigB, Grian, Pearl, and Martyn who are caught in "this perpetual cycle of death games")

And this might be Listeners even though it's not capitalized but it was in the Murder Mystery episode of Evo:

September 14th is two days prior to Jimmy's episode 98, so this may be the Listeners or the one who put the statue with the chest for his Mission

Now my thoughts on Listener Jimmy (sorry this post is getting so long):

He may no longer be canon, but:

I believe the Listeners first interactions with the Property Police is them saying they consider Martyn and Jimmy candidates. I think they chosen Jimmy and not Martyn is because, although the Watchers hate the Property Police as a duo, they hate Jimmy far more. This is why the fandom believes the Watchers are behind the Canary Curse. The Listeners chose Jimmy because he already had the weakest tie with the Watchers.

Also that's why the Watchers (Martyn's voices in Last Life) wanted him to cut ties with Jimmy. Because they knew, although they see him as weak, Jimmy has always been able to get through to Martyn, seen time and time again in Evo (especially when Martyn meets up with Jimmy post dragon and man was literally broken until he had met up with Jimmy again)

Also Jimmy is empathetic. But being a Listener (or canonically a person who is connected to the Listeners) helps him be way more empathetic and connected to people which kinda goes with this post

Also my opinion on the Canary Curse is it is either given to Jimmy because of his connection with the Listeners, or the Listeners gave it to him "so he wouldn't have to go through all the pain" but actually because the Listeners and Watchers are both morally gray and the I think the Listeners have ulterior motives with Jimmy or they are actually allies with the Listeners and it was the Watchers plan for the Listeners to "save the Evolutionists" because otherwise, since they are both gods, the Listeners could've gotten the job done without the Evo Five getting captured. The only reason they have Jimmy help the Evolutionists post Evo is for an excuse to separate him from everyone else because the Watchers know how good Jimmy is with people and how well he figures out where the next portal is (the property police found most of the jump portals first) and he and Martyn probably could've figured out the rest of the jumps and gotten EVERYONE out safe, but the Watchers wanted Jimmy and Martyn weak so they separated the two which destroyed both of them, allowing the Listeners to "save" the Evolutionists and getting five of them traps

Sorry this was mainly Listener thoughts and not Listener!Jimmy thoughts, but this is what I had on the brain

Tbh it sucks because Friends is so special to me but it tanked, actually got canceled unlike the other gens, the arcade game and merch sales weren't doing it so they tried to rework the series for the next gen

Aikatsu on Parade and all it's merchandise was partly an attempt to scrape up more money for Planet's release but??? I don't think it worked??? the first couple episodes mention all these really cool ideas about their idol world and then nothing came of it, it was a cute concept but I really think they just fell reaaally under budget and tried to skate by hoping nobody noticed

ever since Stars things have just been kind of mismanaged 😭 like why is the majority of their merch acrylic character stands?? you are a trading card rhythm game for 8 year olds 😭

I LOVE how diverse the music is!!!!! all the "standard idol stuff" really stands out too imo. Signalize was one of my favorites from the start, it just hits so different, most idol anime start with that extra sparkly guitar happy type of song but the instrumental for signalize was so unique, I always thought it was a bold choice for a show like that their rock music is so good. like so so gooddddd

I swear out of the like 700 songs of this series there are maybe 6 I don't enjoy?? ALSO WOW THATS A LOT

Same about the animation, OG s2-onward & Friends was great!!! I also love in the movie when Ichigo performs Kagayaki no Etude, there's a slow spinning scene when she's talking on stage about what the song means to her and every couple seconds it switches from 2d to cg angles and it's so seamless, I love it 😭💗

I think Planet's cg was also beautiful, I don't have much of an attatchment to the season but the character designs look really nice, good fluffy hair physics, and they've TOTALLY perfected the in-the-dark glowy look by then!!

another thing most of the fandom agreed on, Stars feeling kind of uncanny.. and the auras kept covering idols art certain parts so that's why they changed all the arches early on, they ACTUALLY got written complaints from kids 😭😂

I always wanted to see an idol with no type or a couple!!! Before Kaguya was introduced there was a huge theory going around that she was actually a Sexy/Cool type and since pairs were the point of Friends, we thought we were finally getting double type girls

I also wished the concept of my coords was used in more than that one ichigo gen ep, where you mix up brandless pieces, one of my favorite things to do is mix and match outfits in the ds games so I was hoping to see like idk maybe soleil could split their PR coords together one time or something??? idk would have been cool though!!

Ugh I do agree with you on the merchandise. Like I can’t play any of the card-based games because America so the cards would basically be glorified trading cards. This might be my doll collector brain talking, but why didn’t they make fashion dolls? I know they did for Friends but they didn’t expand on the concept at all, they just made two dolls. I want to see the girls in their basic coords and then fashion packs for each brand, like a set of multiple Futuring Girl rares or just one PR. I would have gone absolutely apeshit for that. It would also allow for mixing and matching, so maybe it could have tied into the show a lot more like with the concept of PR mixing you brought up! I feel like most PRs in units work pretty well together so I’d like to see the mix ups.

Yeah, I really do not care for planet. I think it really didn’t work, and was an awful lot like PriPara when it didn’t need to be! While the cg is admittedly gorgeous, I also feel like it tried to be so ✨aesthetic✨ all of a sudden instead of being bright and colorful like it’s always been! But maybe I just hate change.

I’ve heard that a lot of people find Raki to be a Mary Sue and hate the way she copied the designs of others. I don’t know enough about her to form an opinion, really, but what do you think?

I love the fact that the kids complained during Stars. They may be kids, but they have standards!!

I think double type idols would be super cool and really flesh out the world. Tbh I think there could be a few idols that could be double typed with only a few minor tweaks (I always thought Mikuru was a pop/sexy idol tbh). One thing I think would be interesting is to see how brands would react to it. Brands appreciate dedication, so would dual type idols have a hard time getting PRs because the pure-type brands would worry about being thrown aside? Cool conflict imo.

Now I have to ask, are the ds games any good? Are they able to be played as someone who speaks absolutely no Japanese? I’ve never really thought about getting one of the games before because I have no clue how they work
