A wet slap echoed through the corridor every time his bare feet hit the polished wooden floors, or he gripped at the bland beige walls to his left. Her fucking bots were good for nothing, a challenge requested and yet never delivered to him in its entirety– that’s what he told himself as he bled out in the hallway, still limping towards his bedroom. His bedroom, what a laugh; the woman called it that, and yet he saw it as nothing but a place to scour the sense of failure from his skin and his mind, and get a few hours of fitful sleep every night. Perhaps he wouldn’t even make it there this time. Maybe this was his final and ultimate failure, one he could never scrub away. 

Slick feet caught one another and Vegeta tumbled to the floor, the pain so immense upon landing that his breath escaped him. The black around the edges of his vision struck, an unaccounted enemy in the night, collapsing his world into darkness. It seemed as though for the first time in his life, a warmth that thrilled down to the bone encompassed him, soothing his pains– the physical ones at least. His mind no longer toiled under the weight of his thoughts, reaching a level of ease that was rare, even if the memory of reaching this place was beyond his grasp. But it was so nice, to bask in the comfort of nothingness. Maybe I could stay here for a while… What was left for him anyway? No home, no family, not a single person who cared about him. But wait… No! A bubble of resolve reached the surface of his psyche; what kind of coward would he be to abandon, to abandon… his destiny! Despite the agony it caused him, Vegeta forced back the warmth, struggling fiercely against its hold on him as he clawed at the blackness. It wasn’t his time, not yet. 

“…ppen? You should be dead with the amount of blood you lost, you complete and utter imbecile! Kami…” 

Her voice greeted him as he breached the underworld, and yet his kept his eyes closed, locating his lungs and coercing them to breath once more. She sounded shaky, her own breath stilted and hiccuping as if she were… crying?

“I hate watching you do this to yourself, Vegeta.” It was almost so soft that he couldn’t hear, and if he hadn’t the incredible ears of a Saiyan, he probably wouldn’t have. But there it was, out in the open. This idiot woman, what, cared about him? Despite the injuries to the rest of his body, something in his chest squeezed painfully, in competition with the aches of his mind. He had to know for sure. 

His eyes opened without hesitation, and the sight before him was truly one to behold. Disheveled and still in pajamas, Bulma was covered in his dark, sticky blood up to her elbows, with a smear across her forehead and splotches on her tshirt. Her eyes, pools of anguish and vexation, studied his bandages with the rapt attention of a nurse and a friend; they were swollen, the redness only further brightening that outrageous blue of her gaze. So he lived then, because of her; how many times did that make it now?

It was tiresome to stare up at her; his entire body felt like rubber, and dizziness made his head spin. “… Bulma.” Shit, was that his voice? Since when had he been gargling nails? Vegeta grimaced, squeezing his eyes shut; maybe thats a side effect of one too many near death experiences. 

“Ve-Vegeta? Kami, you asshole, I thought I was going to have to get a body bag this time!” It was a poor attempt at humor when her distress was obvious; for whose sake it was tried was unclear. “I swear on my grave if you ever do this again, I’m not going to save your sorry ass!” Considering her state, Vegeta was almost inclined to think that the truth. Some nagging voice in Vegeta’s head hissed that she had a point; if he wanted her to keep caring, he couldn’t keep trying to die. 

“I’m not trying to die…” Talking to yourself is not the best way to signal that you’re okay, but Bulma just seemed surprised that he responded to her. 

“You’re a terrible liar.” She sniffled, dragging a bloody hand under her nose. “But… I’ll believe you this time.”

He would thank her for this one day, he decided in that moment; squinting up at her watery smile, covered in the gore of his training, she looked almost like a warrior. Vegeta supposed that she was one, in heart, and courage, at the very least. 

Even if it more resembled a scowl, he smiled back.
