So many ways to say I love you. Mehr -- مهر-- is an ancient Persian word. As with many words that are old, the meanings are layered one atop the other. Mehr is love and affection and friendship; Mehr is kindness or to do a kindness; Mehr is mercy and sympathy; Mehr is prosperity and well being. Give yourself some mehr; share some with others. I should hasten to say that most of you don't even know that you were supporting my new endeavour! You were just being your wonderful selves.

Gratitude is also my antidote to fear and anxiety. I created this calligraphic reflection as part of my Gratitude Collection which features greeting cards in different scripts and languages.

For most of my career as an artist I've concentrated on works commissioned for a specific purpose. I still do art work for clients and welcome your requests.

With over four decades of experience as a calligrapher, I’ve decided to make my fine art and world calligraphy available to a wider audience by introducing a variety of calligraphic products and fine art limited editions.

My specialty is world calligraphy in multiple languages and scripts, in contemporary and historical styles. Calligraphy also informs the rest of my artwork, some of which is also available on this website.

I am introducing greeting cards as the first offering and will be adding wall art, limited editions, apparel and other items.

A couplet in Urdu by the poet Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869).

                غمِ ہستی کا اسد کس ہو جز مرگ علاج

                شمع ہر رنگ میں جلتی ہے سحر ہوتے تک

ġham-e hastī kā asad kis se ho juz marg ʿilāj shamʿa har rang meñ jaltī hai saḥar hote tak

It can be translated:

“For the grief of life, Asad*, what would be the cure, except death? A candle, in every condition or color, burns until the coming of dawn.”

*Asad: a self-reference to the poet.

The poet poses the conundrum: is there any cure for life except death?

The candle burns in every condition and color—as we do in life, burning, singed, inflamed, consumed; burning with pain, sorrow or anguish; alight with love or passion; inflamed with jealousy or rage; experiencing every color of happiness or sorrow. What can end this burning but the guttering of the candle at the end of the night. Dawn, the extinguisher, brings an end to the candle’s colorful conditions: a death. Left unsaid is the arrival at dawn of a new and brighter light.

Freedom -- آزادى -- Azadi

The core of freedom is dignity, that every that every human being has inherent worth and value and should be treated with respect.

Every individual and every people has the inalienable right to freedom in all its forms: physical, cultural, economic and political; and every person has the right to protest against injustice.

Mehrangiz – مهرانگيز – a Persian name with the meaning bringer of friendship and love; motivator of love, friendship and passion.

مهرانگيز نام است به  معني: به وجود آورنده دوستی و مهر، برانگیزاننده ی محبت و دوستی، انگیزنده ی شوق و مهر

"If you want light, you must light a fire" -- اگر نور خواهى بايست آتش روشن کني -- This line of poetry is often attributed to Mowlana Rumi. Whether it belongs to the official works of the poet or not, the sentiment seems consistent. On the one hand it is a very practical statement. You need some light to look for something? Then strike a match, light a candle, look around! You want some light on your life? Eat food, breathe air, absorb some energy from the world around you. All of this lights the fire of your physical, emotional and spiritual being. You look around. The sun is shining! There is light!
