24 April marks the ten year anniversary of the Rana Plaza catastrophe, an event which saw the eight-story Rana Plaza building in Dhaka, Bangladesh collapse. ⁠ ⁠ Devastatingly, the building, which housed numerous apparel manufacturing factories, was its usual hive of activity when its structure failed. The search for the dead ended on 13 May 2013, with a final toll of 1,134. 2,500 more were injured. An overwhelming majority of those who lost their lives were female garment workers. Investigations found that the building had been extended by four floors beyond its original permit, and had been built with substandard construction materials.⁠ ⁠ Whilst I was thinking again about the tragedy and about writing this post, I was contacted by @ocean_awakening, asking me to speak at a Women's Empowerment Retreat about my experiences as a female business owner in 2023.⁠ This started me thinking about how my own personal experience working in the fashion industry in the western world has been in stark contrast to the vast majority of women's experiences of the industry around the globe. To start with, I feel safe in my working environment. That shouldn't be considered much for anyone to ask. ⁠ ⁠ I've always wanted to use ColieCo as a platform for education and activism to help foster a change in the industry - to push for the end of the unfair treatment, pay and conditions of the (mainly female) workers in the garment industry.⁠ ⁠ This week is @fash_rev week (22-29 April), an important opportunity to shine a light on the damage that fast fashion continues to wreak on a global scale, and for us to discuss, develop and champion alternative, actionable solutions.⁠ ⁠ This week we will be sharing in our stories and Twitter/FB posts resources and petitions we hope you'll all consider checking out.⁠ ⁠ @fash_rev has a great manifesto, which everyone should read, a link to which we've added in our bio ❤️⁠ ⁠ CONT.
