CYL8 Nerding - Internal Bottom 10
y'know, last year, the least voted character in CYL had just 2 votes to his name, so I thought this might be the first year we ever see a character get 0 votes!
this did not happen -- our least voted character this year has 1 vote. fucking incredible. anyway, shall we go all-in on this year's biggest losers?

BACKGROUND.
Florence’s early childhood was spent in the cold north of the Guatier region, her family having lived in the Holy Kingdom of Farghus for generations, if rather in the same place. Given many of her ancestors' penchant for trade and mercantile work, they had a tendency of moving to wherever location provided the most work, and roughly around the time of Florences’ 13th birthday, her family moved once more. This time, instead of staying within the borders of their ancestral home, they moved to Leicester, passing through Galatea and Daphnel territory, before eventually settling down in Riegan territory, in one of the smaller towns, not terribly far from the capital of Derdriu.
In the 6 years between their relocation to Leicester and Florence’s attendance of the Officers Academy, her family was quick to adapt to the need of the townspeople, and as such, Florence spent much of the passing years learning all many of trade skills: sewing, leatherwork, fencing (for protection while traveling), pegasus care (learned while passing through Galatea specifically), herbology, cooking, and medicinal training.
Upon arriving at the Monastery, they joined the Golden Deer House and lent their support to their classmates with their various skills and hobbies.
After the Monastery fell, they traveled to Derdriu, rather than their hometown, in order to open up their own business; a combination of shop, where they carry tools that they are familiar with using, and a school, where they teach anyone who wants to learn skills that they are proficient in. In making their own business, they make sure to keep in touch with Claude, Hilda, and Lorenz, in order to keep their supply routes open, as well as wanting to stay aware of what else happens in Alliance.
MONASTERY EDUCATION.

DESIRED STATS: Magic & Resistance.

PERSONALITY.
(Pre Timeskip)
Very soft spoken, Florence grew up in chaos and thus, while very accustomed to it, savors and prefers quieter moments and places. A gentle soul, they do not enjoy fighting but are very aware of the necessity in learning how to fight, in large part to having experienced multiple dangers while traveling in the road. They prefer to be a defensive fighter as a result, preferring to strike from a distance or provide support to their allies.
Good with their hands, they do take pride in the things they create (especially fabric / textile & thread based items & leatherwork), even if they do not say as much out loud, and many gifts they give and enjoy receiving are those that are handmade, but they also enjoy giving and receiving good food.
(Post Timeskip)
While they remain soft spoken and prefer gentility and quiet spaces, they certainly grow into a more self assured, assertive (when necessary), and more quietly confident after taking care of their own business during the timeskip. They are of far stronger personality, mainly due to their newfound confidence, they still do not like the limelight and are far happier to let others take the glory and spotlight.
In combat, they still prefer to be a defensive / support based unit, rather than a front line fighter, but thanks to their speed and evasion, they can more readily handle being at the front

Luck of the Draw, a Fire Emblem 7 ‘fic
Words: 4,949 words Summary: They all ended up dying anyway. Pairing/Character: Mark, Fargus, Oswin, Hector, Lyn, Kent, Fiora, Farina, Dorcas, Raven, Wil, mention of others. Extra Info: This was originally written and posted sometime around 5/11/2012. This fic is told in reverse chronological order! Rating: T Genre: Gen, character study-ish, bit of friendship.
The title is the link to Ao3. Comments welcome as always. <3
Notes under a cut.
This was one of my least popular Fire Emblem 7 fics, garnering very little attention when it was posted and confusing all four people who were brave enough to read through to the end of the story. This was my own fault; I failed to mention at any point that it was a story told in reverse chronological order. 🙄
Huge shout-out to Sentury from the old days though, who was pretty much the only person who seemed to genuinely like the concept of the story. Re-reading their old review motivated me to do this rewrite the most.
--
I will always use the default name of Mark for the FE7 tactician. I'm very attached to it.
I'm certain this story was born in part thanks to a rewatch I did of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor that year + the memory of the 'fic Famed Genius (which, if you haven't read as an FE7 fan, I would highly recommend).
2011 and 2012 were weird FE7 years wherein a good number of people tried to make sense of the tactician's role in the story. Famed Genius is the one I remember best for using the concept of control over time to marry the fourth wall to the other three. How else could there be no casualties? There was something truly genius about explaining the player's constant resetting to prevent any permanent death with the actual story/character of the tactician.
--
Luck is what this 'fic tries to explore, or at least the concept of luck as being more than just coincidence.
I wanted to start this story off with the end already solidified: everyone has died but Mark and he wonders what good his luck or careful planning did anyone when they all ended up dying anyway. Sure, they had longer lives this way, but to survive a fight with a dragon only to learn later that many of his old companions died of mundane bullshit feels pretty bad.
--
I really trimmed back the Fargus scene from the original because not only was the original dogshit, but it didn't really...go anywhere? This took a long time to rewrite because most of it ended up having to be scrapped.
I like the idea that Fargus believes in luck but not in good or bad luck. He feels luck is a component that factors in but cannot be blamed or held in high esteem. It is what it is.
The Davros was Fargus's ship in-game.
Mark studying strategy in Etruria is just something I made up for this story. I wanted Mark to really feel like he belonged in the world and wasn't just a player insert character.
Farina's dominant hand being her left: this is just an old headcanon. This scene is meant to imply that the loss of her fingers and therefore her ability to fight might have led in some not-insignificant way to her eventual death.
--
Since this story goes in reverse chronological order I wanted to cover things from the FE6 canon (loosely), including Hector's imprisonment. While the tactician's ending in FE7 suggests they are never seen or heard from again after the end of the story, I want to reiterate that I like viewing FE endings as "what the history books say (that may not necessarily be the actual truth)."
In this instance, Hector recruits Mark to lead his forces and they lose. Mark (along with Oswin and other higher-ranking survivors) end up being imprisoned here. This is the battle that ultimately claims Hector's life in FE6 (for those who do not know), so we can assume Oswin does eventually die here as well.
--
Regarding the deaths of the characters: I didn't want to go over every single person's death just because it felt like it would bog down the story too much; you have to kind of assume that Mark has heard of many deaths not discussed or mentioned in this story.
Serra was married to Oswin and would be the mother of Bors and Wendy (or Gwendolyn, I guess is her localized name now?) in this story. (Don't @ me, tying FE7 to FE6 in the dumbest ways was a tried-and-true tradition of ye olde FE days.)
--
That everyone lifts up Mark as this big-brained tactician should make sense from the characters' points of view. Like, it all seems so calculated to them! But to Mark, they were all just lucky/fortunate guesses. He couldn't have known the pillar would break or what side of it to have Rebecca stand on. He couldn't have known Kent wouldn't die in leading that charge against Lord Darin.
Speaking of Darin, I always let Kent lead the charge in that chapter because he asks for it. Here's the actual dialogue in-game for Chapter 19 Dragon's Gate:
“Mark, let me take the point. I will break through, even though it may cost my life. If something happens to me, Mark... Lady Lyndis... Please watch over her.”
--
While FE7 has a lot of "leader" characters (Hector, Eliwood, Lyn, Oswin, Marcus, Vaida, Kent) I don't think any of them can come close to understanding the burden placed on Mark to direct them better than Fiora does.
While all of these characters have been in charge of others and have had to make calls that may have lost people their lives, Fiora is the only one who understands what absolute defeat feels like. The original story did not give her a scene so I added one.
I liked the idea of her seeking a purpose in being a survivor (maybe as kind of a parallel/foil to Lyn).
--
I wanted to add like 10 more scenes to this story for a bunch of the other characters, but I couldn't find a place to put anything where it wouldn't feel clumsy.
Going from a scene talking about Fiora's experience on Valor all the way back to before the group reached Caelin in the prologue felt like a huge jump but I don't know that an extra scene or two in there would have helped. I'd be interested in people's thoughts on it, though.

Chapter 8: Noble Lady of Caelin (Section 7)
Following the information Leila had given them, Eliwood and his allies decided to go to the Valor Isle, where Darin and the Black Fang was.
They traveled to Badon, a port town in Lycia, obtained a ship, and hired a seaman they could trust. Then, they departed for their destination, better known as the Dread Isle.
The seas surrounding the Dread Isle were infamous, as ships frequently disappeared within their waters, and the locals never dared go near them. Because of that, it was difficult work for them to find a single seaman, much less an entire ship. But a pirate crew called Fargus' Pirates was willing to take the risk and go with them.
When they heard that Eliwood was trying to cross the seas to the Valor Isle despite knowing full well the dangers of doing so, it piqued their insatiable desire for adventure, and they vowed to do whatever it took to get them there.
Though Eliwood and his allies hired the pirates as their crew, it did not change whether they could trust them.
And so, a single ship set sail on the seas…
Everyone was all aboard, and the ship cut through the water’s surface, which was bathed in and reflecting the sun's light. The Valor Isle they were seeking was located on the seas directly south of Lycia.
Eventually, they could see the silhouette of the isle on the blue horizon, enveloped in fog.
'Father is on that isle…"
Once they were near the Isle, Eliwood thought not about if his father had participated in the rebellion, instead praying that he was safe.
Then, one of the men on watch noticed a small boat floating their way from the ship's upper-left. Inside it appeared to be a single person, lying down. And as he further explained, considering the water’s current in this area, the only place the boat could have floated from was the Valor Isle.
Meaning that he did not know who the person on the boat was, but there was a chance they knew what was currently happening on the Dread Isle.
However, it was conceivable that they were a member of the Black Fang that Darin had spoken of.
Eliwood gave the command to be cautious, but still hoist the boat up to the side of their ship, then immediately went himself to where that scene would unfold.
ー
Hector and Lyn, who had the situation described to them beforehand, were already there.
With their strong, muscular arms, the pirates were able to hoist the boat up onto the deck, and when they were able to see clearly who was inside of it, Lyn was the first to say something.
"Ninian?!" She pushed past the pirates and rushed over to the unconscious Ninian, then softly lifted up Ninian's top half and gently shook her. "Hey, wake up! Ninian!!"
Meanwhile, Hector, who did not know anything about Ninian, asked Eliwood, "You know her?"
"She is a woman I found and saved by chance one year ago, when I met Lyn and her allies."
His memories from one year ago came back to him, still as vivid as ever.
This was the girl he'd crossed paths with on his way to Khathelet to train with Hector…
She had an ephemeral elegance and a mysterious air about her that were both unlike any other woman he had ever met before.
He reminisced on those nostalgic days. Now, he was worried for the well-being of this woman of his memories.
"Ninian, open your eyes!!" Lyn called out to Ninian with panic on her face.
Finally, her hard work seemed to pay off, as Ninian opened her eyes slightly. "...Ah…"
"Ninian, are you awake?"
Even with Lyn's voice, Ninian did not seem to grasp what was going on around her at all, as a confused expression formed on her face. "...Hm? …Um, I…"
"Are you alright? Why were you in that boat? Nils isn't with you?"
"...Ah… …Um…"
"Ninian?"
No matter how many times they called out to her, Ninian stayed just as confused, and she had no reaction when she saw Lyn and Eliwood, though she was supposed to know them.
Eliwood looked at her in her current state worriedly and said, "Are you alright, Ninian?"
"...Ninian? Is… that… my name?"
With those words, they finally understood why she was acting so strangely.
"Ninian! Is your memory…?!"
"...My …head feels… so fuzzy. I am… at sea?"
"Yes. You drifted here in a small boat."
Lyn explained the situation to her in detail, but it did nothing to restore her memory, rather, it only added another problem to their list that they needed to solve.
Though she had the special power to be able to sense danger before it happened, Ninian was still a woman even more frail than the average person. They knew full well that the Dread Isle was dangerous, so they could not bring someone like Ninian with them, who was not only so weak, but also without her memory.
Hector proposed that it would be best to entrust Ninian to Fargus and the pirates, but Lyn was utterly against it.
"Are you telling us to leave her behind?!”
“...We obviously can’t bring her with us, right? We’re going to THE Dread Isle!”
“...Still, we must bring her with us!”
“Lyndis?”
Lyn’s unyielding attitude made Eliwood feel a bit uncomfortable. She should know just as well as everyone else how dangerous it would be to take Ninian with them. Still, she may have a reason for being against leaving her behind.
At Eliwood’s question, Lyn explained her reasoning. “Ninian is helpless without her memory. We’re the only people who know her. If we leave her with people she doesn’t know despite what’s going on with her, it will scare her to death!”
Eliwood thought for a moment about Lyn’s request.
If they thought first and foremost about her physical safety, then they should leave her with the pirates. But if they thought about her mental wellbeing, then Lyn had a point. Since Eliwood had never experienced memory loss before, he could only imagine it, but not knowing a single thing about yourself must put a person’s mind in a terrifyingly unstable state.
‘Who am I, and what is my past?’ Even though Eliwood and Lyn had told her everything they knew, she couldn’t confirm that any of it was true about her.
It was clear from the look on her face that those were her current feelings.
Seeing that expression made Eliwood feel that he could not abandon the girl in front of him.
“...You’re right. It will be best for us to protect her at our side.”
Eliwood gave his response to Lyn’s proposal, then turned to Ninian, looking bored and staring at her arms, and said, “We’re going to that island now… Will you come with us?”
The lonely Ninian answered Eliwood’s words as if her life depended on them. “Yes… Please, take me with you…”

Still waiting for a response on the Naga & Medeus asks, but why is Nemesis so old outside of the usual "Baddies are ugly" thing in FE? I mean he's literally the oldest criminal class unit we've ever seen in FE to my recollection & looks about 50 at least, strange that he'd still be a bandit at that age. Or Nemesis was only that old when Serios confronted him for that last stand? I don't know the timeline.
IDK when Nemesis took his dip of Sothis blood, but maybe living as brigand makes you look older than you are and Nemesis was just a really worn 40 years old, who then became immortal? Nemesis’ well over 100 when Seiros punches him.
Dark sorcerers (Gharnef/Nergal/Manfroy/Jedah, etc) are older than him, unless you don’t consider them to be “criminal class units”? Idk how old was FE7′s Fargus, but he must have seen a more winters than your average bandit, despite being a berserker.

THATS THE COTTON CANDY CHILD YEAH. Im about to buy fe th (when my banana switchlite gets released) I SURE HOPE NOTHIN BAD HAPPENS TO HER. also as an aside which house should i play first ive never played fe.
i won’t tell you WHICH house to play, but I’ll give my thoughts on each house, while trying to avoid spoilers
Black Eagles:
This is the house Bernadetta is officially in (that being said, even if you don’t pick Black Eagles, you can recruit her to your house if you put in the effort)
House Leader is Edelgard, the princess of the Adrestian Empire. Very composed and analytical, and when it comes to her beliefs and ideals, she’s very headstrong
As far as I’m aware (because I’ve only 100% through one house’s route) this is the one house that has a secondary branching plotline outside of the initial “pick your house”. I don’t want to give spoilers, but one of these is a little easy to miss, so my advice is to make sure you get close with Edelgard, and when you’re walking around the monastery make sure you talk to her
Can’t say much else about them, mostly because of spoilers
Blue Lions:
House Leader is Dimitri, Prince of the Holy Kingdom of Fargus. On the surface he’s about what you would expect from a noble prince, but he does have quite a lot of depth behind him
In Part One of the game, most of the story missions have connections to the students in the Blue Lions house
Coincidentally, in this route you learn some things about Edelgard that you don’t even learn through the Black Eagles route, really
I haven’t completed this route yet, but from what I hear (and can infer based on the route I DID complete) the story is the most emotional
Golden Deer:
FEAR THE DEER, BABEY, WOOOOH GOLDEN DEER FOR LIFE! sorry, had to get that out of my system. anyway you probably know this by now, but Golden Deer was my first choice and is the one that I have 100% completed
House Leader is Claude, grandson of Duke Riegen who is the leader of a group of nobles called the Leicester Alliance. Claude is a goofy trickster kind of guy who likes to scheme and keeps his secrets, but when it comes down to it he’s a good guy and he’s reliable
The Golden Deer really give off a feel of “rag tag group that becomes a close knit family”
Can’t give many many details because ~spoilers~ but the true villains of this route really seem like the true villains of the game overall, and I feel like (in some ways) this route does a better job of setting them up (not perfect, but more than other routes (which is understandable because the other routes have other things to deal with) )
GENERAL ADVICE
If this is your first Fire Emblem game ever, I suggest playing on Normal-Casual
If you like a character that’s in a different house, you should definitely try to recruit them to your house, and there isn’t any limit on how many people you can recruit (trust me, I have one file where I recruited literally everyone)
(also if you’re using the feminine version of the player avatar and you’re not in the Blue Lions, there’s this one character named Sylvain who will automatically join you if you ask)
You don’t have to, but I really like taking the time to talk to everyone in the Monastery once a chapter. It helps you find more things through exploration and some characters will say rather interesting things that you might have otherwise missed. Also,,,, Gatekeeper(TM)
When you complete one route you unlock New Game + which gives you perks that generally makes doing things easier, and in NG+ you can choose a different house too, so even if you have a hard time deciding which house to go with first, you can always start a new game and play through the other houses too
kinda rambled on you a bit, but there! that’s my advice. Have fun! :)

Professor’s Log 4
Professor’s Log Log of the Ashen Demon.
Yeah I’ve made a shit ton of progress.
Time Skip hit, I stole two people from other houses. Ashe and Slyvian. I like them, they’re good.
Edalgard is the Flame Emporer. Like, I’m both dissaplonted and not? I kinda wanted a hot guy.
Hubert may have killed his own father? Yikes. Given he shares VAs with Goro Akechi this is sadly ironic.
Also if I understand correctly, Claude is half Almiran? Which explains why he’s dark skinned when none of the other Golden Deer are. Also explains why some people hate him. Classic case of racism, but it’s not like FE hasn’t tackled this before. But the game handles it really well and doesn’t try to make it a central focus.
I’m worried for Dimitri though. I plan to do Blue Lions next, so seeing everything he’s dealing with is concerning. Fargus seems to be struggling.
ALSO! When I hit the timeskip, I got Slyvain back, but Ashe never showed up!!! WHERE IS ASHE?!
Also also, I don’t like how I’m being forced to side with the church. I DON’T TRUST RHEA. I don’t care if she can turn into a dragon, I’m sure I can too. Sothis fused with me and she has the ears. But it’s like, oh well? Claude doesn’t seem to fully trust her given how much she hid.
Byleth crying when Jeralt died hurt me. I don’t care if it’s a trope in these games, Byleth being an emotionally detached person for pretty much all 21 years of his life, who never cried even when he was born suddenly crying over the death of his father? That’s the stuff I love.
Byleth is such a well written protag. I love this game and I can’t wait to see more.
