Karla Homolka and The Deal With The Devil

Karla Leanne Homolka is a Canadian serial killer and rapist who, with her then-husband Paul Bernardo, raped and killed at least three minors between 1990 and 1992. Homolka’s case gained worldwide notoriety when she entered a plea bargain referred to as a ‘deal with the devil,’ in which she was convicted of manslaughter in the rape and murders of three young girls, including her own sister. She received a sentence of just 12 years. Bernardo was convicted of murder and received life imprisonment. A psychiatrist described her as "remains something of a diagnostic mystery. Despite her ability to present herself very well, there is a moral vacuity in her which is difficult, if not impossible, to explain." Homolka painted herself as a victim and unwilling accomplice, both of which helped her to strike a deal. She claimed she was also a victim of abuse and forced to take part in the murders. Videotapes of the crimes emerged, having been withheld by Bernardo’s inexperienced lawyers, after the plea bargain and showed Homolka to have been a very willing participant. She stole drugs to administer to her younger sister so that she and Bernardo could rape her. There was huge public outrage over her sentence and release from prison in 2005. During the summer of 1990, Homolka stole drugs from her workplace (she was a veterinary technician) and spiked her younger sister, Tammy’s, dinner, Bernardo then raped the young girl until she began to wake up. Karla stole different drugs from her work and drugged Tammy again with horse tranquillisers. Bernardo and Homolka raped Tammy while she was unconscious, Tammy later died from choking on her own vomit. The pair hid the evidence, redressed Tammy and covered up her death. Their next known victim was Leslie Mahaffy, a 14-year-old girl who was kidnapped, drugged, raped, abused and murdered, they hid the young girl's body and then dismembered it and encased it in concrete. Videotapes showed Mahaffy was held, repeatedly raped and tortured for 24 hours by the couple. The pair abducted 15-year-old Kristen French in 1992, they held her captive for three days torturing and raping her before murdering her and dumping her body. Homolka is now free and has remarried, marrying the brother of her lawyer.

Sweetpea, Sweetpea, what a rollercoaster ride this book is and one where I have to say, I didn’t want to get off. I first read it on my Kindle years ago but my love for it was re-ignited when I joined the #bitcrackbookclub for a buddy re-read recently. ⁣ ⁣ Once you meet the female lead and anti-heroine Rhiannon, she’s definitely difficult to forget. Settled with a boyfriend and a dog and working in a menial job as an editorial assistant, Rhiannon seems just like a normal girl. Except of course for the little list she keeps of people she wants to bump off because they’ve disgusted her in some way or that they “deserve” it. ⁣ ⁣ Rhiannon was the victim of a heinous crime as a child and has undergone a minor celebrity status because of it with some memorable moments on a TV morning chat show. She gets through each day by making plans to rid the world of its most unworthy subjects and it’s absolutely crazy how invested you become in her story - she’s very convincing and is the perfect likeable unlikeable character! ⁣ ⁣ Rhiannon is a character I think everyone can sympathise with in the smaller, less violent aspects of her life and there were certainly darker parts of my psyche that were rooting for her in some circumstances. Sweetpea is a daring, imaginative and unique look into the mind of a female killer. Going into this I really didn't know very much about Belle Gunness.

I think that Camilla Bruce does an excellent job balancing a sympathetic re-telling of her life, and the horror of her actions.

Having recently read The Savage Instinct, I do find there to be an interesting agency to these early female serial killers. This transformation and hardening from internalizing extreme abuse, and the detachment they show for their crimes.

Both Belle and Mary Anne Cotton were fueled by similar desires: Money and family, specifically children. The cumulation of these desires being the deaths of their husbands, and children. The want for more being their ultimate unravelling.

I found this book hard to put down, and even with an ending that cannot be a surprise I was still shocked at it's power.

Really excellent book.

I have been struggling for months with disordered eating. And recently I got labs back showing that it had fucked up my metabolism, but not severely enough that my doctors noticed. So the part of my brain that was excited by losing weight is also intrigued by the idea of taking the behavior I was engaging in even further to see how long it would take not only for me to hit my goal weight but for them to notice something is up. And that scares the shit out of me.

And it didn’t help when the TERF(s) said:

Now fr, we all know how this story goes. Overweight white girl who listens to MCR gets in a relationship with a methhead who abused her because he knows she won't leave because she's so insecure. Get out, bestie! Smelling like corn chips and using expired cover girl concealer to hide your bruises isn't living!

And I know your big ass will see this so just know I hope l've helped you realize some things about yourself. Your body is a TEMPLE and you should treat it better. Leave that man and get some common sense!

And the thing is, while the insults of my boyfriend made me extremely disgusted & wanting to fight because I am extremely protective of people I love, the ones about my body made me sad. These are reinforcing the idea that I should just give in to the disordered patterns.

So yeah I’m trying to not give in to my worst thoughts & engage in more starvation/bingeing/over exercising.
