Drew this for FEH wedding season in 2023 cuz they refuse to give us Clive Mathilda bridal duo also I could never get over the fact that Clive is sooooo thick
And I love the potential of putting Clair-Tana and Fernand-Innes together. Something about Green Brothers and Pegasus knight sisters. I can't elaborate so I'll just leave this here:
Tumblr media
Images says:
Ephraim: Polo? Like the shirt?
Fernand: No. Like the sport
Ephraim: Oh, you mean water polo!
Innes: Ignore him, he's an idiot
Clair: With a brother like mine, no one is good enough
Tana: With a brother like mine, anyone would be better

i have been thinking about this line too much over the past days so you're all getting A Post about it. shoutout to the other five fernand fans in the world
i think of all of fernand's lines in the main game this is the one that demonstrates the clearest break between present day him and the him at the start of the rise of the deliverance dlc/before that point
putting under a cut since idk how long it'll get + there will be screenshots for lines from the game
specifically we are looking at "a true nobleman" -- there are a couple of ways that i've been thinking about it: what a noble's role is, and how clive has (in fernand's view) failed in carrying it out
let's start with what a noble's role is and where fernand stands before the events of the game. the in-game memory prism between fernand and clive when fernand has just joined the knights of zofia makes it pretty clear what they both think a key part of their job is
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is also interesting because it shows that fernand is more inclined to have loyalty to zofia/a cause rather than a specific leader. put a pin in that for later lads
in one of the memory prisms from the dlc, we see fernand lecturing clair about just what's expected of her in the knights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we don't get any elaboration on just what the expeditions and other missions are, but it's safe to assume they're with the purpose of keeping zofia and her people safe. and he takes this very seriously.
and in the first dlc map, he takes slayde to town for being a [insert insult of choice here]
Tumblr media
the various things he yells at slayde about further show what he thinks a noble needs to do. a noble should fight with their men, and certainly not abandon them altogether. if some have fallen, a noble should do their best to fight in their memory.
so, fernand is a fairly standard knight early on. nobles should be honorable, brave, take their duties seriously, and look out for the people under their protection.
but we all know how he is in the game. how did he get to this point? we all know that his family was killed by commoners during the timeline covered by the rise of the deliverance dlc.
while that event is obviously no excuse for his actions, i do want to emphasize just how traumatizing it must have been, because i've seen people try to brush it off.
this guy lost his father, his older sister, his step-mother, and his two younger siblings (both younger than six years old!) in one attack. we don't get to hear him talk too much about his family, but he obviously adores his younger sister and it stands to reason that he cares greatly about the rest of them too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so yeah! that would mess a guy up!
and the thing is, that's not all. a shameless plug here to my fernand character study fic, but i think that fernand's fallen arc revolves around a steady loss of identity.
before the start of the game, he's a son, a younger sibling, and an older sibling. he loses that after the attack.
before the start of the game, he upholds honor. he loses that after the deliverance's last resort play to get out of the castle alive in the fourth dlc map. for those not familiar, the rigelians were fleeing zofia because they'd been warned about the impending attack. some of the deliverance noticed, and the rigelians were taken hostage as a contingency. lukas threatens to kill them all if the deliverance isn't allowed to leave alive
fernand's pissed that he was left out of the plan, of course, but it's really what the plan represents that sets him off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the rules of knighthood and nobility that he's revered for all of his life no longer stand. and it's a "lesser" noble seemingly bringing about this change (even though clive gave the okay) as the deliverance continues to have more commoners
and before the start of the game, he serves zofia, first as a knight of zofia and then a knight of the deliverance. he loses that when he leaves the deliverance.
so by the time we meet him in game, he's more or less lost everything that makes him fernand. it's not a surprise that he snaps, or that he's immediately able to align himself with rigel.
his lines when leaving the deliverance and then when we fight him in act 3 show how dramatically his views of the role of a noble has changed since we first saw him. let's see where we are now
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in fernand's eyes, the deliverance was supposed to be just like the knights of zofia. a distinction between commoners and nobles, with the nobles in charge of keeping zofia...well, zofia. zofia thriving and not having bandits and desperate commoners run rampant. not being taken over by rigel. and not putting their honor as knights at risk.
in that sense, nothing has changed. but it's the third screenshot that shows the difference.
before the events of the game, would fernand say that the commoners are lower in the social hierarchy than nobles? yes. and obviously he is not the only noble in the game who would agree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but before the events of the game, would fernand have called the commoners "detestable vermin" as he does in the line at the top of this post that has spun me down this rabbit hole? absolutely not.
now, being a noble doesn't have a focus on protecting the commoners of the kingdom. now, being a noble means protecting the kingdom and what it supposedly stands for from the commoners, who can't be trusted like the nobility can
oh, and hey, remember when fernand was more about the idea of zofia than whoever the ruler was?
Tumblr media
the official game timeline does seem to indicate that the deliverance is founded after fernand's family's deaths. so by the time it's founded, fernand has already started to be disillusioned with his original ideas of the connection between nobility and commoner and his role as a knight
he's able to set that aside because of his closeness with clive, but between clive stepping aside and him putting alm in charge, what reason does this fernand have to stay?
and then he winds up with berkut, who just so happens to hold the same sentiments that fernand has likely been wanting to hear someone else say for some time. now we're back to fighting for a empire/cause.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so we've gone from "i don't care too much about who rules zofia because it's zofia herself and her people that matter" to "rigel and berkut understand what it means to be 'a noble,' so they're the ones who deserve to rule"
and, as we've established, fernand's thoughts on just what it means to be a noble have taken a sharp turn.
i'm not sharing the screenshots because 1) i am out of images in this post and 2) i like to forget about the framing of the fernand-talking-to-mathilda-in-jail shot, but further evidence on this point:
mathilda: don't you care about zofia?
fernand: zofia? you mean the proud kingdom whose riches fell to wild and ignorant savages? zofia is dead to me. i have buried her and will not look back.
now to the other underlying message in a "true nobleman." this implies that alm and squad have been hanging out with a nobleman who is not, in fact, a true one. it could apply to lukas, but it's a safe bet that fernand is taking a shot at clive here.
clive, who sanctioned the hostage-taking of the rigelians. clive, who has allowed commoners to fill the ranks of the deliverance. clive, who has decided to put a child -- a commoner child no less -- in charge of the deliverance just because he's related to an old famous guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
fernand takes genuine pleasure in giving the partial reveal of alm's identity. clive has chipped away at fernand's original ideas of nobility and has since gone even further by going directly against fernand's new ideas.
clive's reward? getting fooled. that boy you put in charge just because he was mycen's grandson? surprise! he's just some kid! sure wish you had a nice strong noble leader with nice strong noble knights following them now, don't you?
also when he's talking with mathilda, he says, "sadly, clive and i no longer share the same ideals"
so this isn't just that fernand's idea of what it means to be a true nobleman has changed. it's also his view that clive has lost touch with that reality
anyways, if you made it all the way down here, thank you for reading and have a cookie. i hope you prefer it to a bag of flour because i'm not sure how i'd feel about just handing that out

I own Shadows of Valentina, but I never finished it. Still, I was bored. So I decided to use the character sorter, just to see how the rankings for this game turned out. And honestly? I think these turned out pretty accurately. I'll discuss more down below, but yeah. This is pretty accurate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kliff being my favourite was always a given. That bookish young mage type really appealed to me. So yeah, it makes sense he scored the top spot. And having Berkut and Fernand near the top also makes sense. That game had shockingly compelling antagonists. Or at least some very well designed antagonists. And finally, Mycen and Nomah being in my top however many makes sense too. An old warrior and an old wizard? I'm a sucker for old mentor characters; it was only a given that i'd love those two. So yeah. Everything on these lists just kinda makes sense.

[FIC] wishing you were somehow here again
Summary:
To get away from the pitying looks of fellow Deliverance members, Fernand visits his family's land. Past the rubble of the manor, he finds memories of better days beneath a tree.
Word Count: 1,159
read on ao3
Excerpt:
It’s been weeks since Fernand's family manor burned down and took his entire life with it. Weeks, and the pain is still fresh. Visiting the land is still difficult. There’s always a split second when he rides up one of the hills and expects to see his home in the distance. Then he sees the rubble and it hits him all over again.
People have asked if he intends to rebuild the manor, as if he can simply replace the history of the old and move on like nothing had happened. No, the rubble will stay. A reminder of who’d been lost. A reminder of what the commoners will do if they’re not kept in line.
The rest of his land—it still feels wrong to think of it as solely his land, rather than his father’s or his family’s—is another question. His lands are as dry and infertile as everyone else’s, especially now that no one is properly tending to them. Fernand is likely the only regular visitor, and even then his visits are infrequent, given everything else that’s going on in Zofia.
But these visits are an opportunity to get away.

Honestly, I don't see why not. He'd just be forced to interact with "peasants" a lot and be reminded what people are actually like. You can't really generalize
