Also see Chairman Clayton's statement.  He doesn't seem to exactly understand the technology but emphasizes the right themes around not scamming Main St.  The scams are distressing to everyone. Breaking into the Industry - My L5R Journey
Well, it’s finally here. My first fiction for Fantasy Flight Games went live today. So far, it seems to be pleasing fans, particularly the Lion Clan players. In celebration, I wrote a personal history about my time working with the brand both at AEG and FFG for those of you who are interested in my story about breaking into the industry.
Summer 2014, Alderac Entertainment Group held open auditions for Story Team members for their Legend of the Five Rings brand due to a number of their veteran writers leaving for various reasons. At that point in my life, I hadn’t been seriously involved with writing, as I had graduated from college two years earlier and hadn’t really picked up the pen since my last creative writing class. I also hadn’t dabbled in L5R for over a decade since my path led me away from it though I’d had brief reminders that it was still nestled in the softer spots of my heart.
My first exposure to L5R had been in middle school. My mother bought me several novels with samurai on the covers. The first one had a cover image that simply stuck me through to my soul. The samurai wore blood red armor and a fearsome steel mask that made him look like a demon. However, he was a demon brooding, ready with sword in hand but biding his time. Brom, the artist, had given the portrait enough life to crawl off the cover and nestle into my thoughts for weeks. As I read through the books, I came to later know it was a portrait of Bayushi Shoju, the Clan Champion who would later become one of my favorite characters of all time, the poised underhand of the Hantei emperor that waited to strike at the right time. Shoju, along with the Mother of Scorpions Bayushi Kachiko, later defined the Scorpion clan for me, and I was hooked. I was obsessed with the Scorpion Clan, cheering and mourning with them throughout the entire series as the Clan Wars followed their ups and downs. Stephen D. Sullivan, Ree Soesbee, A.L. Lassieur, and Stan Brown developed the Crab, the Phoenix, the Lion, the Unicorn, and others in my mind, making Rokugan, its conflicts, and its bushido real in my mind.
Those novels were the Wizards of the Coast novelizations of the Clan Wars storyline, and after the brand returned to AEG, I lost touch with the world though my love of the Scorpion remained constant. (In tribute, I made my own personal emblem that I marked on all my art pieces and signatures all through high school and college which featured primarily the tail and stinger of a scorpion.) My love of Rokugan reemerged years later when I met my future husband.
While I was living in Japan and getting to know S. better, he was telling me about some of his favorite things in the world. When he mentioned L5R’s Lion Clan, I did a double take (a mental one because we were only communicating through letters back then) since Rokugan had been a seminal part of my young imagination. He had been playing the L5R card game for about 20 years at that point, and needless to say, he was shocked that I knew what he was talking about. I think this solidified in his mind that we were meant to be, even if I was Scorpion Clan.
A few years after that, I was married and living in Hawaii when S.’s brother shot us a text with the news that AEG was doing open writing auditions for a position on their story team. He suggested I apply. The audition called for a story in the style of Rokugan, so I crafted a story called “The Dishonorable Death of Matsu Gohei,” S.’s favorite Lion Clan samurai (besides Toturi). It was an interesting tale describing more in depth Gohei’s end as he had primarily died off-screen in the fictions. After I submitted it, nearly an hour before midnight on the day of the deadline, I heard nothing for about six months. I didn’t actually believe in my ability to join the story team since I didn’t consider my fictional writing all that marketable, so I figured that I just got passed over. My husband read on the L5R blog, however, that there had been hundreds of applications, so the time it took in deciding the new members could just be due AEG being buried alive under all those stories. Well, long story short, I was contacted by the brand manager in January 2015 who offered me the position if I wanted it. I was chosen with two other people (Chris Hand and Maxime Lemaire), and we joined the L5R Story Team giants like Shawn Carman, Robert Denton, Rob Hobart, and Fred Wan as the Three Musketeers. ;)
I worked with AEG on their Twenty Festivals and Onyx projects until the brand was sold to Fantasy Flight Games, so some of my fiction went unpublished due to bad timing. However, I got some pieces published in 2015, such as the “Aftermath’s Misfortune,” “The Ghost of the Grove,” and “Gathering Steel.” I also was involved in their daimyo project, letters to the clans for 20 Festivals, and some Spring Kotei fictions. In 2016, several Story Team members, though we weren’t officially on the Story Team anymore, decided to do a final tribute to AEG’s storyline to complete pieces of the Onyx story line. We self published Onyx Dawn, a fiction series outside of the L5R canon, in which I wrote the final piece for Bayushi Nitoshi, the reincarnation of my favorite Bayushi Shoju, allowing him to redeem his soul from the sins of the Clan War. It was an emotional and terribly poignant piece for me, and I felt like the end of my time at AEG with L5R ended on a beautiful note. Those of us that worked on it proceeded with heavy hearts, knowing that its publication would most likely be the end for us working with L5R.
Last year, I was approached by Katrina Ostrander, lead fiction editor for FFG’s version of the new L5R brand, who asked if I would be interested in working on the brand again, writing fiction. It definitely felt like a reality-warping surprise more than anything, and I was worried that I’d been chosen over people who had given their heart and soul to the brand for decades. I felt inadequate. I felt scared. I wondered if this was really who I was now, a marketable, industry-respected writer, not just a hobbyist… and it felt unreal. However, after hearing what fans had said about my stories on the forums and learning that some of the old AEG people had put in a good word for me, I gained enough confidence to say yes.
It feels like another dream come true to be working with the Clan War storyline, the plot and characters that ignited my passion for Rokugan. Needless to say, S. was ecstatic, and he was more elated when we heard I would be working with the Lion Clan and Akodo Toturi. I am also able to rub shoulders with some of my hero-authors of the older fictions as fellow L5R alumni, like Nancy Sauer and Ree Soesbee, and continue working with friends and acquaintances from my Story Team era. It’s really been an honor, one that I approach with the reticence of one who feels imposter syndrome and the incredulity of the dream becoming reality, and it’s a honor that I now take very seriously.
I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue working with a brand I love with people I respect and care about on projects I believe in. It’s more than I ever could have asked for, and I’m grateful to be breaking into the industry with such good people on such a cool game. It’s opened lots of doors for me. It’s given me experiences I’ll never forget. It’s made me a much much better writer as I hone my craft with each passing draft. It’s a gate I get to walk through, and I’m grateful to everyone who opened it for me.

Tatooine board for Star Wars Legion
Star Wars Legion was my most anticipated game for 2018. The battle of Hoth is the reason that made me want to play miniatures wargaming. Seeing all these rebells in the ice trenches firing at the advancing AT-AT was the most awesome battle I could imagine as a teenager. I still remember that scene and it definitely had an impact of the way I approach this hobby: large army of troopers, towered by titanic vehicles on historically-inspired battlefield in fantastic universe. Epic & cinematographic.
Anyway, when Star Wars Legion was announced, I knew I had to invest in it and make a board (or two). Actually, I had a lot of idea for several battlefields but I ended up chosing Tatooine. I know it’s a classic choice but I wanted to make a desert board for a long time and, as for my mordheim table Malval, I had to do my own adaptation of this planet. As my piano teacher was telling me when I was young, you need to know your classics if you want to progress…
Last February, I was at the International Game Festival (FIJ) at Cannes. For those who don’t know, it’s the european equivalent of GenCon. It’s the second largest game convention in Europe after Essen. FFG was demoing Star Wars Legion there and it was great to see in person the gorgeous boards made by the great Rob Hawkins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To my mind, Rob Hawkins is one of the best miniature wargaming board modeler in the world. Not only his boards are great looking but they are also highly playable and transportable. I’m a huge fan of his work ^^
So drawing from these two boards that set the bar quite high, I started to look at inspiration on internet for my Tatooine boards. Two years ago, my wife and I visited Death Valley in the US and I was happily surprised when I found out in an article by Obsidian Architecture that some Tatooine scenes were shooted there.
Tumblr media
I love the color palette of the Death Valley and I will definitely use it as an inspiration for this Tatooine board project.

Day 128: Sleep deprivation
experimental injection VS. sleep deprivation VS. "take me instead"
“--he even breathing? What if he’s-”
“He’s breathing, Rem, just relax. Panicking won’t-”
“Wait, look! He’s waking up!”
Rob groaned slightly, wincing at how sore his throat felt. He opened his eyes into a squint, wincing at the bright light streaming in through the window. His cheek was pressed against something solid, and it took him a moment to realize it was his office desk.
Two gentle hands gripped his shoulders, pulling him to sit upright against the back of his chair. Even through his narrow eyes, Rob could make out Spencer’s bright red streaks of hair. “Spence?” he croaked, voice hoarse with disuse.
“Hi there, philatos,” Spencer said softly, raising a hand to block the sun from Rob’s eyes. As the brightness faded, he could make out the rest of his office. Rem was standing just behind him, eyes wide with worry.
“Hi,” he said back, blinking to clear his bleary eyes. “W-What happened?” Spencer grimaced, reaching up to push Rob’s damp hair away from his sweaty forehead. “I was hoping you could tell me. Rem came in this morning and found you slumped over your desk.”
Rob rubbed his eye, his pounding headache slowly making itself more and more known. “Guess I fell asleep here last night,” he murmured, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Sorry, Rem. Didn’t mean to scare you.”
“It’s alright,” Rem said quickly, still looking concerned.
“Rem, would you excuse us for a moment?” Spencer said suddenly, his eyes not leaving Rob’s.
Rem hesitated. “Oh, uh, yeah. Of course.” She turned and left the room, glancing back at the two heroes once more before shutting the door behind her.
There was a moment of silence. “So,” Spencer said slowly. Nobody else would be able to hear the anger underneath the calm, but Rob knew Spencer too well not to notice it. “Do you ever intend to sleep in your own bed with your husband, or is that beyond the Head Hero?”
Rob sighed, putting his elbows on his desk and rubbing his face. “Spence, come on, it was an accident-”
“Oh, spare me the bullshit, Rob,” Spencer said, his voice growing subconsciously louder. “You and I both know you could have come home hours before you fell asleep.”
“I was exhausted, philatos. I haven't slept well in days-”
Spencer’s hand landed on the desk with a loud bang that echoed around the room for a moment. Startled by the noise himself, Spencer took a deep breath, then turned away from Rob. “What is it?” he asked quietly. “Why won’t you come home? What’s--what did I do, Rob?”
“What?” Rob stood up, crossing to the other side of the desk to stand beside Spencer. “Honey, no, it’s not you. Not in the slightest.”
“Then what is it?” Spencer turned to face Rob, and the latter’s heart sank when he saw tears in his eyes. “You don’t come home, you barely talk to me when we’re at work, you’re leaving and I just--you promised,” he finished weakly.
“I promise,” Rob said, staring out at the street from the front steps of the group home. He reached to the side, taking Spencer’s hand. “Long as I’m alive, you’ve got me. I’m not gonna leave you.”
Rob sighed, slumping forward so his forehead was resting against Spencer’s shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he murmured. “I love you, you know that?”
“Don’t do that.” Spencer stepped back, a tear breaking and running down his cheek. “You always do that, Rob. You tell me you love me and ignore what I’m actually saying. Don’t brush this off again. Don’t brush me off again.”
“Philatos,” Rob said tiredly. “I’m fine. Just a bit overworked.”
Spencer went quiet, his face slack. A single tear track ran down one cheek, stark against his dull, tired skin. “Fine,” he mumbled. “I’m going on patrol, then.”
“What? Hold on, Spencer, wait-”
“No, just-” Spencer backed a step away, a hand held out warningly. “Not right now. I don’t want to do something I’ll regret.” He turned, opening the office door. He looked like he was going to say something else, but decided against it and stepped out, the door clicking shut behind him.

an absolutely minuscule overworked rob piece that i wrote at 3am
When Rob woke up next, his head ached with a fiery passion and the bridge of his nose felt bruised where his readers had been resting on it. He sat up straight with a groan, steadying himself on the arms of his chair as his vision swam.
The office was just a little bit darker than when he last remembered, so not much time had passed. Rob rubbed his eyes, wincing as he felt pain blooming in his stiff fingers. All he could make sense of was that one moment he was awake, and the next he was head down on his desk, his pen on the floor.
He stretched a little, feeling his shoulders and back settle into place. His body ached, his head hurt. Rob wanted nothing more in that moment than to lay down and sleep. As he bent down to pick up the pen he had dropped, his eyes drifted to the pile of paperwork beside him on his desk. Maybe next time.
Rob pulled a folder off the top and got to work.

Day 126: Silent panic attack (Fall From Grace)
holy shit are you guys EXCITED
Spencer watched as Rob scratched at his wrist a little too harshly, his eyes vacant and unseeing. Rob’s breaths were coming too quickly, but still ever silent. “Honey?” he tried gently, scooting over to sit shoulder-to-shoulder with his partner. “Are you alright?”
Rob nodded vaguely, but Spencer was sure he hadn’t really heard the question. He reached out and separated Rob’s hands as carefully as he could, grimacing as blood welled where the man had left scratches. “Take your time,” Spencer murmured, bumping his knee against Rob’s. “There’s no rush.”
It was another eight minutes before Rob’s breathing began to slow again, and his eyes finally focused on where Spencer’s hand was still resting on his arm. Spencer was rubbing the spot gently with his thumb, humming some incoherent tune under his breath and watching the people pass on the street below.
“Spencer?”
The man blinked, looking over at Rob. “Hey,” he said warmly, smiling. “You back with me?”
“I think so,” Rob whispered, voice hoarse. His hands were still shaking badly, and Spencer quickly wrapped one up with his own. “Sorry. Not sure what happened.”
“Don’t be,” Spencer assured him, squeezing his hand. “It’s okay.”

Day 119: "You weren't supposed to know" (Fall From Grace)
switched roles today. as a treat.
“Come on, Sage,” Rob said pleadingly, half-carrying Sage across the street. “Nearly there now, yeah?”
“Kid, I’m fine, alright?” Sage insisted, trying to straighten up. “I can walk on my own.”
“I k-know,” he said shakily. “Just- shit,”
Sage glanced over at Rob, startled. His too-pale skin was covered by a sheen of sweat, eyelids fluttering open and closed every few steps. He swayed on the spot a little, like it was taking all his willpower to stay upright. “Jesus, what’s going on? Are you alright?”
“I-I think,” Rob said slowly, “I think something’s wrong.”
And then he went down.
“Rob?” Sage caught him right as he began to fall, but he was a lot bigger than them and it was all they could do to lower him to the sidewalk more carefully. “Where’s it hurt, kiddo? What happened?”
Rob groaned, gesturing vaguely at his torso. “Burns,” he gasped, squeezing his eyes shut to stave off his dizziness. “Fuck, I don’t know- It was fine-”
Sage rushed to lift the hem of Rob’s shirt, frowning when they saw a mass of bandages. “What is this?”
“S-Sorry. You-” The healer cried out, grasping at Sage’s wrist. “You w-weren’t supposed to know.”
“Know what? Kiddo, what-”
Rob reached down with a trembling hand, slowly peeling back the edge of the gauze. He choked back a whine as the bandage stuck and tore at his skin, but Sage could already see the angry red skin underneath, tinted with yellowed infection.
Sage was completely speechless, only coming back to themselves when Rob let out another sob of pain. “Shit,” they breathed, pressing the gauze back over the wound. “Kiddo, we’re going to get home in no time, alright?”
Barely able to keep his eyes open, much less speak, Rob nodded.

Day 104: Forced drugging (Fall From Grace)
uhh i dont know if this is good or not i cant decide
“Sage,” Rob murmured, kneeling down beside the end of the bed. “You have to get some sleep, pops. Please.”
Sage mumbled something incoherent, wide eyes still trained to the floor. Their whole body was shaking, and their face was pale with sleep deprivation and illness. “Can’t,” they managed to whisper. “Please.”
The healer sighed, scooping up both of Sage’s trembling hands in his own. “Can you drink some water for me?” he tried gently, just barely meeting their sunken eyes. After a moment, the villain managed to give a slight nod.
Rob stood, making sure Sage was stable before crossing to the attached bathroom, shutting the door softly behind him. He turned to the sink, eyeing the pills on the edge of the basin. Guilt rolled in his stomach at the thought of what he had to do, and he reached for a glass with a grimace.
A few minutes later Rob was sitting back down on the bed next to Sage, cup in hand. “Here,” he said, clearing his throat to fight the rising nausea. “This will help, pops. I promise.”
Sage nodded, barely managing to hold the smooth glass steady for long enough to take a sip. Rob watched them, murmuring his approval and taking the water back when they had drank all they could manage. “Good,” he assured them. “That’s good, Sage. Just give it a few minutes to settle.”
The two sat there in silence for a bit, Sage slowly beginning to lean on Rob’s shoulder more and more. He wrapped an arm around them carefully, making sure to avoid the bandages winding around their back and chest.
“You- what did you do?”
Rob startled at the sound of Sage’s hoarse voice; it was the most they’d spoken in nearly a week. “What?”
“Rob, I’m-” Sage turned to meet his eyes, and the heartbroken look on their face made him physically wince. “You did something.”
“Pops-”
“Don’t do that, you-”
“Sage, you have to sleep,” Rob insisted. “I can’t watch you kill yourself like this, okay? You’ll feel so much better after you rest, I promise you.”
“I can’t,” Sage whispered, eyes blurred and drooping even in their terror. “I’m scared, Rob, please.”
Another hot bolt of shame and guilt ran through Rob, his stomach rolling. “It’s okay, pops, I promise. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
The pills were fully taking effect now, the villain fully leaning on Rob for support. Sage whispered brokenly again, curling in on themselves as their consciousness began to slip.
“I’m so sorry,” Rob said quietly, tucking their head against his chest. “I’m sorry, Sage. I had to.”

Day 106: Forced to eat something vile (Fall From Grace)
yeahh so the care facility spencer and rob were at when they were kids definitely fed them food scraps from the sink and trash as punishment. its in canon now.
Spencer’s empty stomach rolled as the chipped plate was tossed carelessly onto the table, the mass of compost nearly sliding right onto the table. “Eat up,” the matron sneered, swatting the back of his head as she passed. He flinched as the door slammed shut behind him, leaving the boy alone in the dining room.
He picked at the so-called meal with his fork, gagging as dirty water ran off the vegetable peels and onto the plate. Nausea rose like a lump in his throat again, but the hunger gnawing at his stomach was stronger. He speared the least offensive-looking piece of carrot, wiping off a bit of unidentifiable brown sludge that he would rather not think about. Steeling himself, Spencer bit into the vegetable and chewed.
The taste of old dishwater and days of meal scraps mixing together made Spencer gag on his bite, spitting it back out onto the table. He panted harshly, chest heaving as he fought to keep down the bile rising in his throat. The sight of browned peels and streaks of leftover runoff in muddy water made Spencer’s already sick stomach turn over again.
God, he was so hungry.
A hand landed on Spencer’s shoulder and he jumped, nearly tumbling out of the dining chair. “Sorry-” he gasped on instinct, straightening up.
“It’s alright, Spence. It’s just me.”
Spencer turned quickly, eyes wide. “Rob? How did you-”
“I don’t have long,” Rob whispered, glancing at the door anxiously. “Here.”
Before Spencer could react Rob was pulling a garbage bag from his pocket and scooping the bowl of sink scraps into it. “I overheard them say they’d be back in ten minutes to check on you. Have some of this,” he added, pulling a chunk of bread out of his pocket and shoving it into Spencer’s hands. “I’ll get rid of this, and It’ll look like you ate it. I have more food in the room for when you get back, but it’s not safe to bring right-”
Spencer flung his arms around Rob’s neck, burrowing his face into the other boy’s shoulder. “Thank you,” he murmured, tears welling in his eyes.
Rob hugged him back tightly, staring at the now-empty bowl over Spencer’s shoulder. Rage boiled in the pit of his stomach, but he ignored it for now and gave Spencer a quick smile.
“See you soon,” he promised, bumping their foreheads together before slipping back out into the hallway. Spencer watched him go, something warm settling in his chest.

Note
Only I can bully you to sleep. And now I'm so tempted to bully your mutual to sleep.
Anyway, I don't have any, but at a point, Sage and Spencer should be locked into a room while Rob is away. Or Rem should get a taste of the corruption. ~💜
@whumperofworlds uh oh. 💜 anon is onto us.
sage and spencer literally never cross paths in the main story so i have been dying to get them together SOMEHOW.
PERHAPS PERHAPS!! a little au where rem is trying to get rob to do something, he refuses, so she grabs the two people she knows he cares about and chucks 'em in a cell together (post spencer leaving and post sage grounding, of course). much angst and confusion and pain to be had there

Day 118: Sick at work (Fall From Grace)
as always, feel free to drop an ask or comment, given i'll probably be staying up for an all nighter today. here's more spencer and rob because they're infecting my brain.
“Seriously, Rob, are you sure you’re okay?”
The hero sniffled, readjusting his mask over his sweaty face. “All good,” he promised, wincing slightly at how nasally and hoarse his voice sounded. “Let’s just finish up and get home.”
Spencer grimaced, giving Rob a pat on the shoulder as he passed. Rob nodded in return, stifling a painful cough that tickled the back of his throat. He was becoming increasingly hotter under his hero gear, and he could feel more sweat building under the collar of his cloak.
“Hon?”
Rob blinked, realizing he had stopped in the middle of the street. “Sorry,” he breathed, taking an unsteady step toward his partner. “Coming.”
“No, you’re not.” Spencer took Rob’s hand, leading him into an alleyway out of sight from the main road. He slipped his mask off, so Rob could watch his face fall as Spencer pulled his own mask over his head. “Oh, sweetheart,” he said sadly, ghosting a hand over Rob’s fever-flushed and sweaty forehead. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“W-Work,” Rob managed through chattering teeth, leaning into Spencer’s cool hand.
“You’re shivering,” Spencer said, and Rob’s stomach rolled at the heartbroken tone in his voice. “This is miserable for you, hon. We’re going home.”
“But patrol isn’t-”
“I’ll call in, get someone to cover for us. It’s fine, Rob, really.”
Rob sighed, pitching forward to rest his head on Spencer’s shoulder. “In a minute,” he murmured. “Dizzy.”
Spencer nodded, resting his hands on Rob’s waist to steady him. “Okay,” he agreed, kissing the edge of his partner’s jaw. “In a minute.”

Day 64: Coughing up blood (Fall From Grace)
Media/universe: Fall From Grace (OCs)
don't get on my ass about medical accuracy, i tried my best
Pain exploded in Sage’s side as the metal bat came down, something in their chest cracking at the impact. They curled in on themselves and screamed, white hot agony blinding them. Through the blood pounding in their ears, Sage could just make out the bat clattering to the floor as a voice and footsteps moving toward them.
“-alright? Sage, what happened?”
The villain tried to respond to Rob, groaning as pain flared in their chest. They cried out as his hands brushed their side. “Hurts,” they gasped. “Broken. Something broke.”
Rob sunk to his knees, staring helplessly at their crumpled form. “I saw them hit you, I was too-” He exhaled shakily, steadying himself. “What was it? What hit you?”
They brought a shaking hand up to point. Rob’s breath caught at the sight of the gleaming bat.
Sage’s chest heaved, lungs and throat burning as a cough wracked their body. Tears streamed down their face as the fit shook their bruised and broken ribs, and with a resounding hack blood splattered the asphalt next to their face.
“Shit-” Rob cradled the villain’s face desperately, checking their pulse. “Your lungs could be punctured. I have to get you back, now.”
They gave a weak cough, their watering eyes stinging. “Feels wrong,” they whispered.
“I know, pops,” Rob soothed. “This is going to hurt, I’m sorry.”
He cradled Sage close to his chest, lifting them easily into the air; Too easily, Rob thought with a flare of panic. Sage’s eyes widened and they whimpered at the horrible pressure on their ribs.
“Stop-” they gasped, blinking away tears. “Stop, please- hurts too much, I can’t-”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Rob murmured again, walking as quickly as he could without jostling them more. “I have to. I promise it’ll be over soon.”
“Kid- please-” Another harsh cough. More blood. “Too much-”
Sage took a shuddering breath and their eyes rolled back, head dropping and rolling limply on their shoulders. With a panicked pulse check, Rob determined they had fainted from the pain.
“Just a little longer,” he said, more to himself than them. “I promise.”
