Some old L5R models that I finally painted. I probably got these 20 or so years ago. They were made by either Reaper or AEG. I was inspired to paint them after reading the 5e Adventures in Rokugan book by Edge Studio.

The Suburbs of Washington, DC Need a Cozy, RPG-Focused Convention @Luddite_Vic #RPG #TTRPG #DnD #Pathfinder #L5R #synDCon
If you enjoy this post, please retweet it. This one comes from the heart. A few weeks ago, I hosted another 1st Edition Dungeons & Dragons (“1e”) game at my home. The group spent over an hour at the start of the session just reminiscing about the good old days when most of us first met. This was during the era of 4th Edition. Inevitably, the subject of synDCon came up. synDCon was the gaming…

BAYUSHI AIKO - NPC
A matriarch of the Scorpion Clan. First seen as a foe, because of her cold and brutal methods, and the power she had to unleash an army on the Lion province the PCs were residing in, they ended up siding with her, and her family. They was the ones wronged in this conflit! It all started from a secret deal between the Lion and Scorpion clans, made long ago to end a war that was hurting both too much. The Scorpions accepted defeat, sending seven of their warriors to die at the hands of a Lion samurai that would known as the hero that ended the war, and humiliated their opponent. In exchange, seven favors were to be honored: but of course, when they needed it the most, the Lion failed to repay their debt...

one of my favourite pieces of minor L5R worldbuilding/lore is that handshakes aren’t really a thing in-world, except if you’re in Unicorn lands, and it weirds every non-Unicorn out so much

Have you played LEGEND OF THE FIVE RINGS ?
By John Zinser, Dave Seay, Ryan Dancey, Dave Williams, DJ Trindle, Matt Wilson and John Wick

Rokugan.
Mortal schemes, natural calamities, and celestial turmoil alike have disrupted the political, military, and spiritual equilibrium of the land. Long-simmering rivalries and fresh betrayals ripple through the courts and on the battlefield. The Chrysanthemum Throne is beset by threats from without and within, and the honor of the seven Great Clans shall be put to the test.
Who among the clans will prove strong enough to guide Rokugan in these tumultuous times? Will their names be lifted up beside those of the honored ancestors, or will they fall among the ranks of the empire’s most infamous villains?

I see you have played L5R. I haven't, but my second D&D book ever was 3.0's Oriental Adventures (aka the pre-Rokugan Campaign Setting Rokugan sourcebook) and have been intrigued since, but have had no opportunity to do more. How difficult it is to pick up? I mean, GURPS is difficult enough as not to be worthwhile, so I'm hoping it's not as bad.
L5R is.... I have no idea. The basic dice system is simple and quick, the character sheets are huge though. Switching rings is unusual if you are used dnd but objectively pretty cool and intuitive.
As I mentioned earlier today, it's hard to get ~good~ at. I think I was the only one in our group who actually figured out how combat works, and I only did that by running repeated duel practices with a friend. Genuinely the decisions you have to make evolve constantly, each turn has a different "best choice" than the one before it. I guess the term is tactical? This is true of all combat, social, duels, mass combat, ect. If you are used to the DND fighter thing of "I hit them with my axe" you will be surprised. Any swordsperson in L5R is making more decisions on their turn than the average spellcaster in DND.
I would say the system itself is well worth checking out! Really beautiful design work. That being said, the setting has a lot of orientalist shit that is definitely not worth the time and generally isn't worth the time.

Favourite board game? Ooooooh this is a tough one cutie!! I enjoy Arkham Horror a lot but I think one of my favourites is a game called Hanamikoji. It's a game about seducing Geishas! But I think my favourite game is Battle for Rokugan - An out of print strategy game in the Legend of the 5 Rings settings where you, over the span of a few turns, conquer and solidify your hold over various regions of Rokugan playing as one of the major clans. If you can find a copy of it I would *highly* recommend it!

I know i say it like once a year, at least, but goddamn do i wish Legend of the Five Rings was just an actual mythic samurai setting and not an original world because i just cannot justify getting people caught up on even the cursory lore and world building just to get them through character creation... Like it's such a fun world but it's so contingent on intra-clan diplomacy and social drama that even social stat lite games require a pretty substantial briefing on lore.
and then there's also just my beef with all the lingering orientalist cliches that have just been carried over from edition to edition that are all the sort of thing where any attempt to fix them ultimately just means nudging the whole setting towards being actual Japan. I'd boot strap the whole thing to play a non Rokugan setting (god knows i've tried before....) but the fact that the entire school and skill tree system in anchored to the goddamn clan and family specific lore just means a ridiculous amount of bushwacking just to clear out even the smallest semblance of a generically applicable system.
But i want a put together a campaign for people so damn bad and trying to bake the tutorials and lore briefings, and learning curve in just makes the process so damn complicated...

OUR CHARACTERS
WHERE:
We are playing in the Empire of Rokugan, the setting of the Legend of the 5 Ring card game and ttrpg. It's mainly inspired by the japanese feodal system, but you'll see a lot of influence from China, Mongolia, and a lot of anachronistic/unrelated elements... It is a very eurocentric view of Asia, there is no denying that. However, its lore, especially the rivalty and alliances between clans and people, create a perfect starting point for great and complex stories. We've played a lot and grown attached to our PCs, and we want to introduce them to you!
Here are the links to their individual portraits :D
