I've been going through all the mainline Final Fantasy games (and such side games as well) since I've never really played that many growing up and felt like getting into them all. Doubt I'll ever play all of the main 16, since not all of them look interesting to me, but we'll see.
Final Fantasy X This was the first one I played, back in 2014. I wanted to have at least one FF under my belt before XV came out, and X looked the most appealing. Played it and loved it. Definitely a 10/10 game for me, and I think the Sphere Grid is one of the most fun leveling systems I've seen. The story is so good, the cutscenes go hard, and the characters are really well-designed and memorable. I think one of the most important aspects of FF is a good main party, and X is one of the best in that regard.
Final Fantasy X-2 I've tried twice to get into this game, and I couldn't do it either time. I love Yuna's development from X to here, and I love the aesthetic and vibe of the game, but I couldn't get into the gameplay or how the story was paced and broken up. Maybe I'll get back to it for a 3rd time someday...
Final Fantasy Type-0 I only got this because it came with the demo for FFXV, and I dropped it pretty quickly back in 2015. I only came back to it a couple months ago (2023) and played it to completion. It was definitely a chore. The gameplay itself can be fun/addicting, but everything else is just outright boring or done in a way that makes things as joyless as possible. Especially the story, which is handled super choppily. The cast was mostly one-note (which I get was intentional, in-universe, but still...) and I only really played as Ace and Cater. Machina is probably my least favorite FF protag I can think of while writing this up. I only did one playthrough, and I know there's more in NG+, but I just have no energy to go through it again. Overall, it's like a 4/10.
Final Fantasy XV To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Not really a hot take, shitting on XV, but I mean...it is what it is. I knew it was never going to be the game I was looking forward to back in 2006, but the final product was just so far removed from anything resembling a coherent thought. The combat isn't fun, the skill tree is so boring, and the "open world" is mostly lifeless. Noct and the boys had potential, but they're barely developed or given much to do -- and don't even get me started on Luna and the rest of the side cast. There's a really good story and setting somewhere underneath all the issues, and it's impressive they released anything at all, all things considered. But man, is it just disappointing. 6/10.
Final Fantasy VIII As someone who really loved Leon in Kingdom Hearts, I was always interested in seeing the origin of the character, but just like Type-0, I could just not get into this game. I tried it in 2019, after Kingdom Hearts 3 came out and let me down -- I wanted to pivot to something in the same ball park of Square Enix, so I tried seeing if other Final Fantasy games were up my alley instead. But unfortunately, I didn't click with the gameplay, and the writing felt all over the place. From the bits of it I did play, I did enjoy Squall, Rinoa, and Selphie at least. I plan on getting back to it later, but for now I just don't see myself completing it. And after dropping X-2 and Type-0, and being let down by XV, this was the moment that made me go, "Oh, maybe Final Fantasy just isn't for me."
Final Fantasy XIV The game that made me love Final Fantasy. I've never played an MMO in my life before, but I remembered watching Ray Chase (Noct's VA) stream FFXIV once or twice before and thought it looked cool. In 2020, I got Covid and was pretty much bedridden for the next nine months, so I figured then was as good a time as any to invest myself in an MMO world to whittle away the days. "If I can't live in this world, I way as well live in another," my thought process basically was. And it ended up being a great decision. I love so much about this game, from the stories, to the characters, to the world building, to the music, etc. It's just magical through and through, and I can't wait to see where the next story arc takes us. 11/10.
Stranger of Paradise Jack Garland is an amazing protagonist, and this entire game is so fucking cool. Anyone who hates it doesn't like fun. Chaos/10. The DLC is some of the worst DLC I've ever had the displeasure of paying for, though -- never managed to finish it.
Final Fantasy XVI After XV, I was reasonably hesitant to expect much from XVI, and I remember being turned off by the aesthetic and general art direction from the first trailer. But I was really surprised by how good the game ended up being. It does feel like they're sometimes overcompensating for what they got criticized on with XV -- like having so many cutscenes to the point it feels like a movie, as opposed to how chopped up and bare boned the story in XV was, for example. But the cast is likeable, the gameplay is fun, and boy howdy some of those boss fights will live rent free in my head for the rest of time. Also, the voice acting is on another level. I really didn't enjoy the ending, though, but overall it felt like a step in the right direction for future entries. 7/10.
Final Fantasy VI Man, I just love this game. It was after XVI that I decided to play the older games and finish as many as I could, and I started with VI. I didn't expect a game from 1994 to win me over so badly, but everything about it is so fantastic. I love the whole opera vibe where it's almost like the characters are actors performing a stag play, and it has some of my favorite characters in the franchise. I love Cyan, Terra, and Celes so much. I love the scene at the opera house, the phantom train sequence, the dream world, how some dungeons and parts of the game have you split up and utilize multiple parties in tandem. The music is great. I love Kefka. And dude, the ending is my favorite ending to a Final Fantasy game that I've played so far. It basically took everything I hated about XVI's ending, but did the opposite, and it was beautiful. It was exactly the kind of ending that I needed to see after all the previous games I'd been playing. 10/10.
Final Fantasy IX Another masterpiece. If VI was like an Italian opera, XI felt to me more like a post-renaissance Disney movie. The art direction is so good, and the story is really well written. That said, I don't really care for a good chunk of the main party (Quina and Amarant especially), and like I said above, a good party is one of the most important aspects of a FF game. Zidane, Garnet, and Vivi are all amazing, and I really like Freya as well, but beyond that...meh? I wish Beatrix was a party member. I will admit though, I cheesed it by using the handicaps on the Pixel Remaster version (dealing 9999 damage by default), so I can't actually say if I like the gameplay or not, but it seemed like standard FF gameplay, and the Trance system looked cool at least. But I was just super invested in the story, and didn't want to spend a lot of time fighting. The locations and cities in this game were noticeably good, I do want to say. Overall, a solid 8/10 for me.
Final Fantasy VII I almost didn't want to play this one. It's by far the most popular one and I already knew so much about it through two decades of cultural osmosis and Kingdom Hearts, I was almost content just continuing to be the guy who could say, "Yeah, nah, I've never played FF7" just to be a hipster or whatever. But I did play it. And I can see why it's so loved. The story is so good, and unlike with IX, I actually didn't use handicaps (besides the 3x speed for grinding), and I really enjoyed the gameplay. Probably one of the more addicting gameplay loops from a FF game. The main cast is really good, even if it does have its weaker links (Cait, Yuffie, Vincent). My only real complaint is the translation felt really stiff, like even the translators didn't know what they were reading sometimes. It's probably just because it was the 90s. Still, not a big enough nitpick to not give the game a 9/10.
And that's where I am now.
I want to play Crisis Core and the 7 Remake now, since I have context for what's going on due to playing the OG 7.
And then I think IV is the pixel game I'll tackle next.
I really want to play the XIII series, since I don't believe it's as bad as I remember people claiming it was back in high school. But they're not on PS5, so that'll have to wait.

Well you are right about nine being too rebel for gladnis son but hey logic speaking there always be that one rebel child in a royal fam XD but no matter how rebel he is when mom says no just no. He wont fight mom. Hmm well you got point there about king tho. Okay then leave him out of here lol hey imagine gladnis and their children went camping and dad bring them to hunt! At first they will be like aww why then suddenly they love the taste of victory when hunting!
Dude, if I lived in that universe, I, a total stranger, wouldn’t fight Ignis even if I was PAID for it. Imagine if a SON tries that, omg, he’s gonna DIE.
Nah man, King’s my favorite so let’s just pretend he’s got darker hair and THERE, perfect Gladnis child, haha!
Hunting would be fun! Though I think they’d have to look for very big and troublesome beasts…they’d make a killer team so average hunts would be too easy for them x)

since you already have a lot of crossover between several final fantasy games and also kingdom hearts, have you thougth about adding other stuff from FFXIII verse like from Type 0 and FFXV? (Luna or Seven or Sice or caetuna would be so cool)
I try to avoid crossovers with things I do not have a passing familiarity with. I do not know Type 0 or FF XV nearly well enough to write crossovers for them. It’s also why the majority of the crossover Final Fantasy characters you’ve seen are from VII, VIII, X, XII, and XIII since those are the ones I am most comfortable with.

Before I found your blog I wasn't really interested in Final Fantasy but after reading your comics I got invested in ffxv and I bought the game I just finished it so I would like to 1) thank you and 2) ask which ff game I should get next
Ooh! I’m glad you played and liked it, Anon!
I think it depends on your taste in combat systems! If you liked the real-time combat of FFXV and don’t like turn-based battles, you might not enjoy some of the games I’m about to recommend. But here are my top five recommendations for what do play next:
Final Fantasy IX (!!!!!)
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X / X-2 (Because you have to see how it ends… Also the combat system in X-2 is one of my favorites of the whole series! IGNORE THE AUDIO DRAMA THOUGH I REFUSE TO ACCEPT IT AS CANON.)
Final Fantasy Type-0 (Probably the closest to FFXV in that battles happen in real time and you can move around freely in combat.)
Final Fantasy XII (Enjoy Balthier and the fun combat system and the beautiful music in order to help you ignore its lackluster story. Larsa is a cute lil bean though.)

Attack on Backlog 2017 - No. 9
Final Fantasy XV
Breakdown: PS4 version at 80ish hrs for the Platinum. Plenty of post-game content left undone; plenty of pre-timeskip content left untouched; figure I’ll go back to the game someday (ha ha, not likely) and be like, oh wow, this single-player MMO still has a lot of questing left for me to do, cool (but that won’t happen).
Final Fantasy 15 is a big, beautiful, incomplete, incoherent but ultimately fulfilling and worthwhile experience that won’t disappoint if you have realistic expectations. So, it’s kind of like being in a relationship! Hah. Speaking of relationships, like the ones depicted in this game, and also like my own with the FF series...
TL;DR time! So far I’ve gotten as far as:
Sephiroth’s fight in FF7 where I parked my characters outside of the crater and went, Nah, putting a stop to that glorious (ly pathetic) summer where I spent my 13th or 14th birthday leveling up Materia or something. Whew. Somehow I just lost the nerve to continue despite grinding for hours upon hours. I didn’t even have KotR, so naturally I skipped Ruby Weapon and that just made defeating Sephiroth kind of... pointless?
disc 3 in FF9, but because I’d neglected and refused to learn Tetra Master up to that point, I pretty much hit a roadblock and could not progress. Thanks a lot! Thanks a fucking lot. I really liked this FF. The soft limits on class specialization, with the way weapons conferred different skills to different party members, but everyone could use pretty much anything, the soundtrack, the characters; a lot of it was great. Ditto about the story tho, wasn’t paying attention ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
fhe first 5 minutes of FFIV on the NDS.
almost 50 hours into Bravely Default, but put it down because the storybeats were just too inconsistently delivered, the grinding, though greatly alleviated with some QoL features, was still a huge grind, and something about the game just... never clicked.
taking a glancing look at copy of FFX/X-2 HD and putting the thing down because I have commitment issues.
the first 15 minutes of FF Type-0 HD.
and whoa, before I forget, Steam says I have 13.2 hours in FF13. So there’s that. Great music though! Paradigm Shifting is cool in theory too, I guess. But this game is just awful. And now I want to go back and play it. Why do I do this?
All in all a very poor showing from me. FFXV was, comparatively speaking, way easier to dig in. “A Final Fantasy for fans and first-timers” they say. Well, I’m not sure if I fall into either of those camps. I guess I am a fan? Sorta? I couldn’t tell you about the lore, plot or characters of many of the games, but I do own one of these. And I used to listen non-stop to shitty low-bitrate .mp3s of Nobuo Uematsu’s soundtracks on my Walkman. And I had wallpapers of Rinoa and Yuna, and still own a really embarrassing FF8 wallscroll that was gifted to me?
So! As a casual fan then, I found this one... pretty good. I mean, there’s elements of every past Final Fantasy in its DNA. It feels like a Final Fantasy game, which is to say it feels like the ones which came after 12, which did the most to change up the ATB/turn based combat, and perhaps the composition/interaction of the characters, outside of maybe Tactics or 11.
There’s so much to like here that I’m willing to forgive its shortcomings and missed potential, even if, by the end, the things it gets right is in equal measure to the things it misses the mark on or flat out lacks. It has so much charm and warmth that I’m willing to forgive Square’s misguided reach for critical mass market appeal what with its numerous marketing tie-ins and cross-promotions, or its divvying up of exposition to tie-in films and DLC. At least it gave us that ridiculous Cup Noodle quest line. At least it gave us that. I’m even willing to forgive Chapter 13, and I didn’t even play Verse 2.
I’ve not followed the game at all, so its understandable the ones who clamoured for something like Versus XIII would be a bit irked. All those amazing tech demos and trailers they’ve released over the years? I understand the pain, but ya’ll only have yourself to blame for buying into the pre-release footage.
Yes, the Insomnia chapter was wholly underwhelming. Yes the pacing is weirdly rushed after you’ve hit Altissia onwards and becomes hyper linear. Yes Lestallum and Altissia are in general hilariously undercooked, non-interactive, tiny and I haven’t encountered something this disappointing since maybe hitting Markarth in Skyrim, where the magic of Skyrim’s first 50 hours really started to wear thin. We’ve truly hit a point where graphics tech has outpaced the ability and feasibility to render more organic, more reactive and believable AI simulation in towns and cities. Maybe all this increased fidelity strikes a dissonance with how we think worlds should be populated and behave? I don’t know. Witcher 3 looks incredible though, and perhaps that’s the game that shows you can have your cake and eat it too. Meaty, meaningful content that isn’t just throwaway Hunt quests, or helping some asshole with his car troubles for the umpteenth time. I’m of the opinion that all sidequests in RPGs devolve into kill or fetch quests, and the rare exception requires you to talk your way to success or solve some kind of puzzle and mechanically speaking there isn’t a whole lot you can do. So, that’s where good writing comes in. Fallout New Vegas, if I recall had fantastic writing in this regard. More recently NieR Automata had really rudimentary sidequests that were carried along with quirky written snippets that expanded upon the world. Then there’s the Witcher games and to a lesser extent the Yakuza series that construct entire stories around side content. Yes FFXV’s sidequests are... uniformly underwhelming. They’re all more or less MMO-like filler content for the sake of inflating the completion time and giving you some kind of incentive for exploring the world. And yes, Luna and Noct’s relationship is hilariously undercooked; she does her Aerith moment and it’s tits up from that point on. It’s a shame you can’t be with Iris though the game teases this; Aranea only shows up to do her thing and disappears; Cor straight up disappears; Gentiana does her thing and disappears, etc. People just disappear, for no apparent reason other than selling you DLC, or they didn’t know what to do with these characters because they are plot movers, nothing more. Sigh.
But you know what? It’s been awhile since I’ve played something like the first half of the game so yeah, sure, whatever. Throw on a podcast and go about overleveling past the main campaign. Go ahead and throw on that FF13 soundtrack and go pick up nutmeg (such a great soundtrack).
Speaking of which, I loved the music. I might even call it majestic. I loved oddball world design of mashing what seems to be not-Southwestern & not-Pacific Northwestern USA with not-Venice, briefly not-Rivendell (Tenebrae?) & not-Tokyo. I loved playing grab ass with my boys after camping out in the mornings. I loved Ignis being the mom friend and the my headcanon where the guys store all their cooking and crafting ingredients in the same astral plane where Noctis keeps his weapons. I loved the photography feature and Prompto’s arc. I fucking loved fishing more than I thought would. I loved that there’d always be some kind of incidental dialogue when you’d go exploring or take up a quest. I loved that Bahamut had a creepy human face. I loved how dangerous and crappy the Reglia Type-F is to handle. I loved that Gladio would give Noct shit, even undeservedly at times. I loved that Regis and his crew went on a similar journey all those years ago. I loved that there’d be super high level mobs just chilling in the overworld and that level scaling isn’t a thing, but there would still be things that could one-shot you. I can appreciate a game that helps me with completing its campaign, even if it does so kind of forcibly, since open worlds tend to induce some kind of completion anxiety in me. Will you please go and fucking fight Ardyn already?
About that fighting: I like it? I briefly tried Kingdom Hearts on 3DS and it was... It was not great. But I like the automation in this that allows for just enough player input where positioning and timing is more important than anything else. It’s not very strategic, and you don’t have much in the way of tactical forethought, but it looks cool! Props to Square’s animation team for blending all of it together into a somewhat coherent whole. It’s mostly flash, with just enough engagement to not be a entirely mindless affair.
I think at the end of the day we all have some kind of preconception of what we wanted FFXV to be, and we were all left somewhat disappointed that it didn’t turn out to be that figment of our fancy. But it exists, its more than playable, there’s a lot to do and soak in and those post-credits scenes with Noct and the lads, and Noct and Luna with the photo you chose were enough to wash away the cynicism and disappointment.
It feels like, with the completion of the Episode Ignis campaign and the successful rebirth of A Realm Reborn, Square might finally close the chapter on 13/Versus 13/15 and do things a bit better and more efficiently. Or maybe we’ll be subjected to a mobile hell and more games in 15′s mould, the latter of which wouldn’t be the worst thing? I keep saying it but I never follow through with going back to play the older mainline FF games. Now’s the time! Maybe.

Haha i was thinking that if nine and king were their gladnis child too ofc nine is the rebel son when mom ready them nine will just open some of the button of his shirt while grunting and jack just love being pamper by her while king just smile and let her do her stuff cause mom knows the best but nine likes her do his hair cause apperently mom has a thing for him in spiky hair. While the girls keep on asking what they should wear n all before they attend a royal event. The hunts will be epic!
Nine is such a strange cause cause Gladio and Ignis are both very responsible, and Nine is…Nine. Like, how in the world did a pair of responsible and smart people made a baby…like that, hahaha. I guess it’s math. Negative and negative gave out a positive. Good students gave birth to a school mess. x)
I was thinking about King as well, he would be the PERFECT Gladnis child out of looks and attitude, EVERYTHING…if only his hair wasn’t blond! Blond and handling guns, that was Prompto’s child. Still, if his hair was a bit darker he’d be literal mix of Ignis and Gladio :)
King totally copied his hairstyle from a photo from when dad Gladio was young, btw.

I may have gone overboard
I think I was a little too game happy yesterday when trying to find out what I should buy. One of my friends said I’ve been stuck on FFXV for too long and I needed to catch up (mind you I only bought my Xbox this tax season for the express reason of playing FFXV). So I decided to get new games and I think I’ll be set for awhile. I bought NieR:Automata, FF X-X2, final fantasy type 0, Kingdom hearts 1.5 2.5 collection, and Persona 5. Hopefully I’ll be able to play all of them before my husbands PS4 dies on us (makes a sound like a jet plane when you play it over an hour)

22, 24, 47, 75 for the gaming asks!
22. If you could turn one game into movie, which would it be?This question is so difficult, considering I mostly play JRPGs and they’re normally hard to turn into movies xD but I have a few others too… Like, for example, I’d like to see a movie of Uncharted. Or better yet, a movie series. I actually think something like that is already in the making?
24. Ever cried because of a video game? Which one(s)?Oh well, I certainly cried because of video games - their endings, to be exact. The first time was probably Final Fantasy X. Following that were Tales Of Xillia 2 (any of the 3 ending versions is just extremely sad, because there isn’t actually a 100% happy end), Kingdom Hearts (the KH games all gave me many feels, but especially 358/2 Days and BBS), and just last summer Final Fantasy Type-0 (I couldn’t continue playing for two weeks). And last but not least my latest achievement: Final Fantasy XV - THAT ending completely destroyed me.
47. First person or Third person?Third person all the way. I really can’t handle first person. I mean, I want to know what my character looks like and properly control him/her. Ego-perspective isn’t very good with that.
75. Do you focus on main storyline/quest or do sidequests first?Hahaha, sidequests forever~ xD seriously, I always procrastinate in doing as much sidequests as possible to avoid getting on with the main story. Unless the story reached a certain point and is close to end, then I finish it, before going back to the rest ^^
Thank you for asking! :D

Enjoy Final Fantasy soundtracks on Spotify
The soundtracks of main entries of the Final Fantasy series are now available on Spotify and Apple Music. The soundtrack from the very first game all the way to the Final Fantasy 15 can now be enjoyed on Spotify. Spotify Technology was founded in 2006. It is basically a Swedish media service provider.
Spotify at resent offers soundtrack of Final Fantasy 1 to 15 and even some sub-sequels are there. Umpteen side titles such as FF tactics and Type-0 are also present on Spotify.
Official Final Fantasy Soundtracks now on spotify from FFXV
No X-2 and some others are still missing from the app. Tactics Advance and A2 are some of the soundtracks who are missing from the app. However, there is still hope of its late arrival.

The original Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy 10 soundtracks have made it to the list.
No official announcement has been made
The most surprising thing is that Square Enix did not make any announcement regarding this matter. Square Enix social media channels also do not hold information regarding this great step of theirs. Maybe the special contest being held for Final Fantasy VII will hold an official announcement.
Some of the titles are written in Japanese, which might cause trouble for people to identify their favourites.
All the original Final Fantasy soundtracks are now available for streaming on Spotify and Apple Music. FINALLY. from soundtracks
Spotify is trying its level hard to take things to the next level with Final Fantasy soundtracks. For it is creating multiple live concert versions from the Final Fantasy soundtrack that is available to it. These soundtracks include the Distant Worlds collection as well. Ergo giving its users plenty of music to enjoy.
Spotify does not hold a reputation of showering extreme profits on its artists. Still, the gamers suffering through the soundtracks are bound to give Square Enix a boost financially.
Hope the remaining soundtracks will soon make it to the list and be available to enjoy. Check out The Geek Herald for more updates.

Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Challenge
This year marks the 30th anniversary of my favorite video game series: Final Fantasy.  In honor of the anniversary, I am challenging myself to play as many Final Fantasy games this year as I can.  It is a very daunting task lol.  Anyone else who wants to join in the challenge is welcome!  I’m doing this just because I love Final Fantasy so much and, well, it’s a great excuse to experience my favorite games all over again.
The games I intend to play are as follows:
All the main games (FF-FFXV)
All the sequels to the main games (X-2, Crisis Core, Revenant Wings, etc.)
All the Dissidia games
If I can, I’d also like to complete/play the following:  World of Final Fantasy, Type-0, Chocobo Tales, The 4 Heroes of Light, Mystic Quest, the Crystal Chronicles games, the Theatrythm games, the current mobile games, and any other games I forgot to mention. I don't intend to play and “Legend” games because those are really SaGa games in disguise lol.  I might play some of the Kingdom Hearts games too, since they are a Final Fantasy hybrid, and because Kingdom Hearts 3 is supposed to come out this year.
First up is the one that started it all: the original Final Fantasy.  I loved this game before I even understood what I was doing.  Once I did understand, I loved it even more.  This was one of the hardest games I even played and arguably the hardest in the series.  If you compare the original to the games today, I usually went after the last boss around level 28, because that’s how long it took to level, lol.  I own this game in so many different versions: NES, PSOne (Origins), PS Store download of the PSOne Origins game, the Nintendo Store download of the original NES version, and the PSP UMD.  I will be playing the one on the PSP, which is an updated, easier version of the game with the graphics upgraded to 16-bit instead of the original 8-bit.

Talking about the fem!ignis x gladio childrens reminded me of you post about ff type-0 post that gladnis have like 3 sons? Lol what if those are like their sons I swear ignis spoil them (just look what happen to noct) and they enjoying camping with their father especially mom's food when they went hunting with gladio and the food was worth the fight. Granpa clarus will cry and swell with pride then he look at iris "when you have children train them like your brother did" n iris is like dad ;A;
I think they had only one; I kept playing and got a better angle of one of them, Nine, and from the hair I think he fits better as Noctis x Ignis’ son, haha! But he could still be Gladnis’ kid if we see him that way. :)
Still, no one can tell me Jack isn’t Gladnis’ love child. Like, he has the hair and he’s a warrior, he’s def. their child. I HATE playing with him because he’s so slow and heavy, but he’s who looks most like them, dammit.
Deuce and Rem could also be Gladnis’ daughters if we see them that way, it could work too.
So two girls and a boy, yay for Amicitia Scientia family! Hahaha!
AMICITIA-SCIENTIA FAMILY CAMPING.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Have all my Yes, anon
