Chip can transmit all of the internet’s traffic every second | New Scientist Much more data could be sent through fibre-optic cables if it were split into different packets within each strandShutterstock/asharkyu The equivalent of the entire world’s internet data traffic (1.84 Petabit/s) sent from one single chip using a so–called photonic chip and fibre optic cables… Wow.

First Contact
I'm 14 years old and Hurricane Sandy makes landfall quite close to my childhood home. Sandy sliced the power supply with her teeth, even when she was still at sea. Weathering the storm, I was afraid, as she had hurled a tree into a neighbor’s garage.
When Sandy finished roaring into the pitch black, I awoke to an eerie quiet at dawn, the kind of silence only following an angel passing through the night.
I found myself immediately bored -- I normally would've been in school at this time. I intended to begin there; walking to the junior high school to see if any familiar faces would congregate.
Like a procession, the townspeople walked downhill towards the river, away from the school. I recognized two girls, who said they were going to the riverside park to survey flooding damage. Everyone was going!
The floodplain was very close to my childhood home, but the residential area began where a steep hill crept up. Water was receding from the boggy grass, where Sandy overfed the river, now with no clear distinction between water and land.
What struck me the most was how Sandy turned the massive oak trees on their head. They were a perfect 180 degrees wrong, with roots reaching to the sky, and leaves and branches creating meteorite holes in the ground from sheer force. It was difficult to process the image. It was something unnatural, an upside-down tree. The destroying angel passed through Egypt.
There was danger around. I felt the presence of the angel of destruction in downed power lines. They'd been twisted and cut, wrapped into nooses around splintering trunks, and dunked into the flood of Sandy to be drowned. Yet they emitted a buzzing death rattle, crackling and sparking, dancing in puddles with a Lazarus effect. The coughing remnants of electricity emitted cried out in lieu of mass communication, "Come outside, come to me."
What I later learned, is of the three days I went missing, of which I was unaccounted for, along with seven-or-so other girls. We were allegedly last seen gathered around the entrance of a street, blocked off by Hurricane Sandy flood waters, fallen trees, and actively sparking downed power lines, made more intense by the pools they touched.

Some fiber optic cable. The yellow stuff is DuPont Kevlar Membrane. Kevlar is also used in the manufacture of bullet-proof vests.

I'm like, genuinely frightened about what would happen to the city of Baldur's Gate if there was a huge earthquake, having now seen just how many puzzle dungeons, crypts, secret undercities, temples, murder basements etc are crammed under it. Like if you were going to dig it up to lay fibreoptic cables you'd probably unleash 50 different horrors per street.

Back at it again with the questions. During surgery when everything is (mostly) stable and (mostly) fine, what do you do to pass the time? Iv been told sudoku is fairly popular. (I once asked an anaesthesiologist and he said he played, and I quote "mind solitaire", what ever the fuck that ment). Also I hope your enjoying your break and aren't completely bored.
i have a joke that every anaesthetist either has to choose one mobile game to play forever or a physical solo game forever like sudoku or solitaire.
for me, i play mobile solitaire, answer emails or bother (/pos) my colleagues and (nicely) pimp med students. i played charades and would you rather during a 10 hour case once.
i only do this when it’s a very long case. quite often, i’ll have a list where the anaesthetic side of things is longer than the procedure itself. some lists are so fast.
also, our anaesthetic machines are constantly making sound, i can audibly tell the difference between a heart rate of 60 and 61 because there is a very slight change.
there’s a joke among anaesthetists and surgeons that there is cause for concern if your anaesthetist is staring at the monitors, especially if they’re standing up and looking at the monitors. i like to split the theatre into two halves: the surgical team who are treating the condition, and the anaesthetic team who are monitoring the patient themselves.
i once watched a medical show where the surgeon was looking at the monitors and i laughed for ten minutes. they can’t be focusing on our monitors because sometimes they’ll have their own screens to be looking at and they’re doing something else that is very tedious anyway. that’s my job, get away from my screen, meredith grey. i’ve had to peek over the drapes to ask a surgeon if they nicked something without realising when the patient’s blood pressure dropped, they don’t pay attention to our monitors.
just a really interesting side note: there’s some research suggesting that video games outside of work can improve some of our skills (like fibreoptic intubation).

Part 3!
Reaching Sky Islands, Spearmaster finds the Communications Array and places the pearl on top, sending out a broadcast. Direct transcript below:
[LIVE BROADCAST] - [ANNOUNCEMENT] Big Sis Moon to Local Group
BSM: This will be my final broadcast to the local group.
BSM: Within several cycles my structure's legs will fail. Even if Five Pebbles were to calm, the damage has already been done.
BSM: I can only hope that someday you will all find the answer to our great question.
BSM: I do not think I will see that day. I want to thank everyone for trying so hard. It means a lot to me that you would all go to such lengths.
BSM: ...
BSM: I can't excuse his actions, but I understand his frustration. We all share that. I only wish we had the chance to speak one last time.
BSM: Thank you, everyone. I am happy to not be alone.
(End transcript.)
With this, Spearmaster's campaign ends and he returns to Seven Red Suns, to live the rest of his little slugcat life!
Spearmaster arc: over! What are your thoughts so far?
You cannot convince me that those are wires and not hair. That's 100% hair. If it's wire it's fibreoptic cables.
Also I feel bad for BSM and Spearmaster. BSM because of no happy ending for her, and Spearmaster because it seems he's failed his quest.

Alien!Bri: Good morning, human. I have come to this planet to teach you-
Roger: Do you play tennis?
Alien!Bri: Um.... what's tennis?
Roger: You see this? It's a ball. This is a tennis bat. The ball bounces off this bit of the bat here so when I *mimes throwing the ball in the air and hitting it with a bat* it flies off in the direction I hit it. You hit it back with your bat and the aim is to... keep it going as long as possible
Alien!Bri: Oh. I could just make the ball fly back and forth if that would please you. I have-
Roger: No! no no no no! That's against the whole idea of tennis. The fun is doing it yourself.
Alien!Bri: Hm.... primitive, but okay. Would you like to hear about what I would like to offer this planet as we play?
Roger: Sure! Now, you stand there, and, well don't just stand there, run about and try and return the ball to me like I just showed you and I'll do the same. First to five- Last one to have the ball in ten minutes wins.
Alien!Bri: ... okay.... I should warn you-
Roger: *Serves the ball*
Alien!Bri: *Waits for the ball to be on his side of the net, and like The Flash, returns it in a split second but the superhuman speed sends the ball flying out of sight before Roger can even blink*
Roger: Oh.
Alien!Bri: I have super human speed and agility
Roger:... right. I think we'll call that one "out". I'll serve again-
Alien!Bri: There are some awful things happening to this planet and my people would like to help preserve the animals.
Roger: Are there more of you?
Alein!Brian: Oh yes, lots of us.
Roger: Great, we can have a tournament! Er. In between preserving the animals.
Alien!Bri Grins, which means his face lights up and his hair glows like fibreoptics in a sensory room.
