Yeah fanfiction is "new".

That is why nearly every stage play and movie version of Dracula that has come out since 1897 is writers making new romantic pairings of the main characters, gender-swapping them, combining them, changing the spellings of names, and making minor characters into main characters on the basis of who in the cast the director was having sex with.

Yes it often was. Another very modern problem creatives often face.

(If you didn't know, Nosferatu 1922 featured 'Count Orlok' exclusively because of this. And he may have only been an ugly 'nosferatu' also to avoid her rabid patent-trolling. That woman would have claimed a copyright on vampires themselves, except everyone could prove that that monster had been popular in the West for a least a generation before Stoker wrote his novel.)

Imagine being in a situation where you can use A monster, but not THE version of that monster everyone is familiar with. Another modern problem.

See also Universal owning the iconic Bela Lugosi Dracula now. So while the former Mrs. Stoker is long-gone, you're still going to have to be careful if you make a now-public domain character look too much like he did in a boring movie from 1931.

To be fair, Universal seems to ignore most of their opportunities to sue. ...Unless you make some good money "stealing" their complicated aesthetic IP. Then, prepare to get Nintendo'd.

Also, fun fact, the words "vampire" and "nosferatu" are both garbled English versions of foreign words that mean something completely different. "Vampir" is an old Hungarian or Slavic word for either witch or ghost or ghost-witch, and is itself probably a corruption of a Turkish word roughly equivalent to 'pagan,' specifically someone who does animal sacrifices to a non-Abrahamic god. 'Nosferatu' might be a corruption of a Romanian word for "a bad thing," and comes from exactly one English tourist to Romania who said it meant vampire back in 1885.

My point is, Bram Stoker himself was writing fanfiction based on other vampire-based works that preceded his own, and it is only fair that everyone has been writing fan fiction based on his for more than 100 years now.

And people who didn't create any of this have been claiming various copyrights on parts of it for just as long.

Also Dracula was a real historic person no one can copyright in the first place. But he was this super-boring Romanian who just tortured 40,000 Turks to death, that no one in the West cared about until a Victorian named a scary exotic sex-ghoul after him.

...And people think the success of Fifty Shades of Grey was the first time someone made bank writing horny vampire fantiction.

ana's mom is so wild like what is up with her. like the "often-recited warning: never trust a man who can dance". ??? I'd understand if it was in reference to metaphorical dancing, but ana remembers it...when they are literally dancing. on the dance floor. it may be intended to imply that his physical dancing carries over into metaphorical, but it just comes off so odd. what did dancing men ever do to you, ana's mom?

I'm almost halfway through the book (p. 233 out of like 510 or something). and I don't know what to do with myself. should I power through and read the entire trilogy back to back? or should I take a break to read something nice in-between? what do I say to my dad if he asks what I've been reading recently. if I said fifty shades of grey he'd support my ability to make decisions for myself but also judge me a little. like a "you can do whatever you want but why would you want that. you can do better" and he's right!! I can do better! and yet here I am...

you were interested in "Memoirs of a Beatnik" by Diane di Prima and I just finished it last night.

I think that excerpt from "Beat Culture: Lifestyles, Icons and Impact" sums it up quite okay:

It's also really gritty, filthy and I'd say even by today's standards (or maybe by today's standards) bordering on pornographic. That's not so much due to the things that are portrayed, like there's hardly anything one hasn't read in, say, "Fifty Shades of Grey" (although if it was published on AO3 I'd probably rate it "explicit" and add some huge trigger warnings) but it has more to do with the writing style. It's no-nonsense, explicit and just honest. That really is the great overall appeal of the book. I read some people described it as "erotic" which I didn't find at all except for very few scenes.

The book is exactly how I thought it'd be, having read several other Beat Generation books (mainly Jack Kerouac). The fascination really is that it's written by a woman, who's very open and in tune with her sexuality, something that I think you don't find too often, unfortunately.

I enjoyed the book immensely and for everyone who's interested in the book but unsure: just read the first chapter. If this isn't your tea you won't like the rest either.

Some notes:

Longest season, insane amount of outfits.

Season 2 wigs were the best, because they left Liv's side down fully (and that helped to "blend" the wig).

The iconic three pocket jeans appear for the first time. It gives a simple, functional, comfortable look that has a lot of combinations. I just love the three pocket jeans. Such a pity it will dissapear mid season 3.

I love Bro!Liv crime scene dress. It's such a good Halloween costume.

All outfits worn on 2x03 (Seattle's housewife) are a #look. It's also the first time she stilized her zombie hair.

I also dig a lot the Country Singer, for some reason.

Liv's ID on 2x03 is clearly fake. Noone looks that good on an ID.

Probably this is the only actual show in which sexting are used for tasteful reasons and not for revenge. Nice.

The magician's looks (2x07) are among my favourites.

The blue/black leather jacket was cute. Never seen of a leather jacket like this one.

It's no wonder why Major freaked out while watching Liv performing an ouija scene.

Liv should have roamed the city with her superhero costume more.

Liv + Christmas hat. Awww.

The Fifty Shades of Grey episode (2x11) was a gem to watch little details of the character's costumes. Also, nice looks Liv.

Rose McIver's ass because reasons.

You can spot when is really winter in Vancouver Seattle because of the clothes and the actors' breath in exteriors.

Liv in flannel because she was dating Drake. LOL.

The reddish shirt has a sparkly butterfly in her back. Awww.

I loved the blue/black stripped shirt with a black top underneath. Punk vibes.

Scientist!Liv with glasses kinda look like the protagonist of a porn movie. LOL. Also she was ditched in a place called Heave Ho's.

Liv's wears a blue nightgown with matching slippers. LOL.

Stripper!Liv was also the best and lives rent free in my mind.

Liv wears the same dress for Coach!Liv and HighAchieverStudent!Liv but with different shirts. I remark this one because is one of the most distinctive dresses of the show.

Liv is the cutest SWAT ever. She can tackle me anytime.
