I saw a physical Goblin Slayer DVD for the first time, the other day, in a second-hand shop. I could have bought and destroyed the miserable thing, but I'm confident that any reasonable person unlucky enough to buy it will be less harmed than disgusted. Rather, the persons who have already paid to view misogyny and victim shaming could heartwarmingly demonstrate their opposition to such things by rejecting the anime, manga and novels that represent nothing else.

I am conscious of the remote possibility that I may discover a colleague or acquaintance to be a willing reader of Goblin Slayer. It would be a horrible shock, though not without precedent. The drinking university friend who proclaimed that black people had invented nothing but mud huts, the gaming group that suddenly started spouting anti-semitic canards; the churchgoing Trump-supporters. If the former bit of racism sounds familiar, the characterisation of goblins as biologically incapable of higher creative thought is one of many real racist lies that Goblin Slayer promotes through sensationalised, uncritical exposure.

Anyway, I would find it very hard to work with a Goblin Slayer fan, as they might with me, but workplace policy of excluding offensive material should be some help. As civilised society has consistently rejected Goblin Slayer as toxic trash from the start, I may yet be able to sleep of nights.

Do you have a playlist for the game?

Eh... not so much. I'm not a very aurally-inclined person (ironic I know since One Knight Stand has a lot of elements of a sound novel) as I've had vestibular migraines since I was a child and one of the most frequent triggers is loud noises.

So I've got literally decades of trauma from someone blaring loud music causing me to have vertigo that lasts days/weeks. That pretty much means I don't really seek out music very much and most of my favorite tunes come from soundtracks.

However, there are a few things that I listen to every now and then (at a suitable low volume 😅) which fit the mood of OKS.

I actually listened to the opening Entertainment from Goblin Slayer quite a bit while writing that Camelot dream sequence segment from Chapter 2-1.

BG3 Durge run: casualty list, sunmary etc. Durge spoilers.

I absolutely loved this run. Durge is like playing a completely different game! The plot is fantastic, and the dialogues are hilarious and very clever.

My Durge looks almost exactly like this! Love this tattoo design.

Party: Durge fighter, Astarion, Shart, random hireling sorcerer. Picking Duergar was a Choice, their movement is dogshit and they keep getting stuck on jumps 😭

Act 1

Gale: maimed, presumed dead. Unless Mystra took pity on him.

The Grove: bloodbath. Stole everything that wasn't nailed down.

Wyll: dead

Goblin leaders: dead. Minthara tried to shiv me when i picked Astarion over her, should have rerolled just to see her romance scene but it was late and I was tired.

Karlach: dead. Attacked me on sight yelling about the Grove massacre, which was weird but cool. How did she knowwwwww.

Laezel: dead, because she tried to shiv me when i was sick. Otherwise we were besties 😭

Act 2

Oliver: squished

He Who Was: openly likes me, headcanon dating.

Last Light Inn: bloodbath

Jahira: dead

Isobel: dead

Yurgir: freed from contract because i couldn’t trick him into yeeting himself

Nightsong: dead

Shart: Dark Justiciar mode.

Durge plot: think I'm figuring it out. Orin is getting slapped later.

Daddy Thorm: dead. Surprisingly easy to kill when everyone has misty step and range.

Githyanki plot: pretty much ignored.

Romances: dating Astarion, flirting with Shart.

Durge has slayer form which everyone else in the camp thinks is gross, but Durge absolutely loves it.

Act 3

Picking and choosing quests is fun! I'm already level 8 so can easily ignore stuff that feels too "good" to be of interest.

Somehow my general terribleness has made me Chronically Single. So I had to bang drow beef without the offer of a foursome. Sigh. Choosing the "kinky" options was hilarious.

Kissed and made up with Gortash. He's a good guy really, very swauve. Looking forward to killing him later.

Ascended Astarion. Went at level 10, fight was surprisingly easy now I know the mechanics of the power boosts. Also having Turn Undead is big and clever. Watching Cazador scuttle like a cockroach was very cathartic.

Murder tribunal: Met Saravok, he was fun! Chatted about the old days, killed an elephant, bathed in some blood. Good times.

Nightsong redux: Robbed Lorroakan while he sulked about the Nightsong being dead. Astarion can now summon Ghouls. (Genuinely, just hopped on downstairs and cleaned out the vault. Not a single combat reaction from anyone. Bugged? Or just wizarding hubris? Didn't try to take anything from the main tower tho as I didn't need the robes or staff.)

House of Grief: Shart turned about 1/4 of the adds to our side, so it was a surprisingly easy fight. Shart is now God's Extra Special Princess.

Orin: died in 3 turns, just went Slayer on her and ripped her apart. Fun! Astarion has a new sword.

Saravok redux: Durge has a nice new sword and hat. Although he did one-shot me at one point. Don't know why I expected anything other than a fight, honestly.

Gortash: roasted by the Netherbrain. Saves me killing him I guess. Bit annoyed that I couldn't loot him.

Ignored Raphael and Orpheus completely. Gave the Emperor the Netherstones. Pretty much zero Githyanki plot on this run, as it seemed pointless with Laezel dead.

Netherbrain: much harder with only 2 sets of allies! Blinding the dragon helped, and for some reason the mage got stuck and glitched, so I consider the fight Cheesed By Accident.

Ending: murdered the Emperor, dominated the Netherbrain, turned my party into thralls, ruled the world as Bhaal's Chosen. Epic end scene, absolutely brilliant. IN BHAAL'S NAME!

Goblin Slayer S2 Conclusion

They had no idea what they were doing.

One of the best things to do in a story if you feel it's stagnating, or don't know where to go, is to add a new character. Goblin Slayer adds two. One, Rhea Fighter, (Rheas are basically Halflings), is wonderful. She actively wants to learn, takes advice, respects the veterans.

The second is Wizard Boy, the younger brother of the Wizard that died in the first episode. And he does everything he can to join her. The only reason he doesn't die, and take the rest of Goblin Slayer's party with him, is that they are the main characters, and have plot armour.

In the first season, the only reason they survive is that Goblin Slayer is crazy-prepared, and, quite frankly, often uses weapons of mass destruction. Goblin Slaying is brutal. Goblins are clever. Their nests are too smal and crampedl for a large man with a large sword. They are dark and twisting, the Goblins will use this to create secret hides to attack you from behind. Your clothing and armour becomes encrusted with Goblin Crime, to the point that adventurers will typically refuse to wear their good adventure clothing when Goblin Slaying.

Season 2 wants to make it epic and glamourous.

What else do you do when you want to add to an anime?

Fan service is an obvious answer. In a gritty, horrifying, bleak, blood soaked anime.

What else? Character Development! Ah, yes, well, if only they had actually given the characters names.

Plot? Well, there is a plot. in the background. Goblin Slayer purposefully ignores the battle for good and evil going on in the back ground. And it was wonderful to not focus on the OP hero, but some schmuck doing the dirty work that no one else wants to do.

The Wizard Boy arc was a good idea in theory, just terrible in implementation. If Priestess had joined him and Rhea Fighter for some rat quests to teach them how utterly violent and gruesome it was. They could have had the Guild Girl talk to her directly, and just suggest she spend time with a lower-ranked party, so she could prove herself.

Instead they decided to make the Rhea Fighter almost a background character, and have the fucking twat join the main party.

They forced fan-service into the anime, where it didn't belong. Yes, the girls are all attractive, but they could have just had them do pinups in the eye catches. Instead, they create a modern bathhouse, with all of the modern amenities. When they could have had a much more simple bathhouse to do the exact same thing. They have the girls hang around in lingerie, when they are literally worried about being attacked by Goblins.

They visit High Elf Ranger's family, and we see her surrounded... High Elf Rangers. And half of the arc is spent awkwardly not using names, because none of them have names. And they can't even refer High Elf Ranger as High Elf Ranger, because no one would know if they were talking about her, or any of the other High Elf rangers.

While the world is interesting, the races and cultures varied, the whole design of the story is to NOT focus on this.

The rest of the arc is spent in fan service, which is the primary reason Cow Girl and Guild Girl were invited.

I recommend watching it once.

“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow Knows…” The maxim that the weed of crime bears bitter fruit, intoned at the start of every program, was biblical in its sternness. The Shadow was an Old Testament avenger, a ruthless slayer of the wicked, very befitting the Depression decade of his greatest strength. The Shadow was both the force for good and lurker in the darkness. - The Shadow Scrapbook

The Shadow, also known as The Master of Darkness, The Dark Avenger, The Master of Men's Minds, Weird Creature of the Night, Identity Theft Georg, That Guy Who Lives in Lamont Cranston's House, "Shads" and other many names, is a mysterious figure who fights evil by turning it against itself. He is a former globetrotting aviator-spy-soldier (revealed to be named Kent Allard, 7 years into the character's run) turned crimefighting paladin who fights to protect and uplift the innocent and bring justice to victims of strife and calamity, and he does so with the black-clad design, domineering charisma, sinister cackle, Machievellian theatrics and ruthless efficiency of a villain.

In action, The Shadow loomed as a cloaked figure, materializing from out of the night, rescuing helpless victims and striking terror into the hearts of evildoers. However, he reserved such theatrics for a logical climax. Between times, The Shadow proved himself a master of deduction as well as disguise.

While his major missions were to stamp out mobs or smash spy rings, he often tabled such routines in order to find a missing heir, uncover buried treasure, banish a ghost from a haunted house or oust a dictator from a mythical republic. The Shadow was such an incredible character in his own right that almost anything he encountered was accepted by his ardent followers. - Walter Gibson

The Shadow began life as the spooky narrator of publisher Street & Smith's radio program, whose sibilant, mocking personality and sinister cackle were dramatically more interesting than any of the programs he was narrating, and so when listeners started asking Street & Smith for a Shadow Magazine that did not exist, they had to make one of their own. To that end, they recruited a young magician turned newspaper writer and former associate of Houdini's fraud-busting network, Walter Gibson, to write the adventures. Gibson was extremely acquainted with the ins and outs of illusionism and sleight-of-hand and worked personally with many of the greatest magicians at the time, and would extensively use said knowledge in crafting The Shadow's character and adventures.

And so The Shadow Magazine began, reviving the "hero pulp" format that had died out in the pre-WW1 dime novels and redefining the mold of crimefighting "pulp heroes" from that decade onwards, as well as many superheroes from that time period inspired by him and his successors. He is currently more famous for being plagiarized by the chief inspiration for a certain guy who runs around with bat ears and for his general role as a highly influential forerunner and influence in forms of storytelling still extensively used today.

On the taxonomical chart of Western comics he’s a common ancestor for a sizeable chunk of the marketplace. Every street vigilante, every masked crime-fighter, every necessary monster: he’s in the DNA of them all. A living fossil, a coelacanth or goblin-shark for the comics world, swimming in waters of ice and ink - Si Spurrier

The Shadow maintained a fluctuating radio career over the 1930s to go along with his highly successful magazine, and he'd eventually reach newfounds heights of stardom from 1937 onwards thanks to the debut of a new radio show, initially starring Orson Welles in the titular role. Said radio show would become an audience hit well into the 1940s and would introduce new fixtures to the character such as friend-and-companion Margo Lane and an invisibility superpower, which were eventually integrated since into the comics and pulps and other media. You can still easily find many of the character's radio adventures online as well as his exploits in comics and pulps (harder to find now, but still possible if you know where to look). I'll pass along my personal recommendations here.

In the taxonomical history of American crimefighters he sits in between the hardboiled detectives of the 1920s and the 1940s superheroes, and although the 1930s pulp heroes were in part defined largely by imitating him, he is no traditional square-jawed do-gooder: he is a tall, gaunt, cadaverous wraith with the mask of a Western bandit and a vampire's cloak and the clothes of 19th-century cartoons of saboteurs and anarchist bombers. The barest glimpse of the man beneath is that of a judgemental patrician's aquiline nose and intense, sharp eyes, like icepicks probing the back of your skull. He makes a point to show every now and then how easily he can reshape that face to suit his needs, and make it your own, even doing so in front of you to make a point.

He is Dracula meets King Arthur, Sherlockian brainpower and Lupin trickery joined forces, centerpiece to urban thrillers turned into fairytales as The Big Bad Wolf switches sides to save us. Though his setting looks the part, The Shadow is no gritty film noir creature: he is what happens when the cutthroat gangsters and invincible spymasters and predatory businessmen behind it all meet the actual scariest guy around: Death itself, as the ultimate master and servant joined in one, who found a higher calling fighting for us instead, breaking and bending and controlling the rules and tipping them ever so slightly in the favor of those who are usually in no position to fight back.

As we discussed The Shadow, I suggested an opening scene with a cloaked figure emerging from a night fog to prevent a desperate young man from taking a suicide plunge from a high bridge. Thus befriended, the young man would swear loyalty to his rescuer and thereby become involved in exciting adventures with otherp persons who had been aided by the same benefactor, all being united in a common cause against crime. - Walter Gibson

That is where the Agents come in. As The Shadow is a distant living puzzlebox, we are very rarely privy to his thoughts and feelings, he glides through many stories scarcely-seen until he needs to be, and so we frequently experience things from the viewpoint of proxies, whether they are agents or characters swept into intrigue that only The Shadow can save them from. The first Shadow story opens up with a broke and depressed young man named Harry Vincent, ruined by the Great Depression reality of the time and trying to commit suicide, who is saved from it by The Shadow, and upon accepting a new purpose in life as his agent, grows into a dependable and strong ally, friend and even leader to people once like him over the course of the following adventures.

Across his history The Shadow has had agents and allies among all walks of life: redeemed/pretend criminals who use their reputations to provide The Shadow with inside knowledge, war vets, police officers, prison reformists, troublemaking journalists, government agents, politicians, criminologists, psychologists, high society chameleons, streetwise cabbies, janitors, the homeless, even crooks who once worked for those that The Shadow opposed, with some stories dedicated entirely to The Shadow playing guardian angel or working to provide second chances to those who've turned to crime. Community leaders with opposing viewpoints, rebel spies, prostitutes, historical figures such as Amelia Earhart and Nikola Tesla, robots, political activists and freedom fighters, doctors, birds, boxers, actors, magicians, beavers, and a list too big to get into here. There was a crimefighting dog at some point also and he was a very good boy.

Said list also includes the guy most people initially assume is his secret identity, a wealthy globetrotting man-about-town named Lamont Cranston. The first on-screen meeting between The Shadow and his secret identity Lamont Cranston consisted of The Shadow showing up in the dark at Cranston's bedside, wearing his face and telling him in pristine detail how much he's usurped Cranston's life, and effectively blackmailing him into leaving town so he can continue being Cranston uninterrupted. It is considerably less known, however, that eventually Cranston and The Shadow became weird friends following this ordeal and worked together several times, with Cranston turning out to be a pretty entertaining hero in his own right even besides his designated purpose of being rich and useless, even he was not immune to The Shadow's ability to enact positive change on his allies. Which is one note I'll end this post on: that The Shadow and his surroundings can be a lot more layered than given credit for.

I make the argument again and again that The Shadow is an intriguing character with much more to him than simply the gun violence and spooky laughter and murderousness that he's frequently reduced to, even if he isn't quite consistently so (as expected of one who's been around in virtually every medium for over 90 years). He can be compassionate, thoughtful, cautious and consequence-minded in his approach to effectively combat crime and protect others, ridiculous, eccentric, flawed in ways big and small and humanizing, for better or worse depending on who's writing him. He is a versatile shapeshifter as well as an unassailable force of personality to throw into any gathering, any circumstance, any narrative, and remain unique.

With those other “masked avenger” pulp types, their masked identities are an act, at least in part. Underneath the hat and mask they are regular guys with relatable motivations. With the Shadow, the guy in the hat and scarf IS the real guy, and his motivations and feelings are largely kept from us.

When we see him in his “civilian” identity, THAT is an act. So there’s a kind of brutal simplicity to his dialogue.

I have been doing a lot of work on R for my research and decided to give it a go and write the script for a random D&D character generator.

It is a very simplified version and there is definitely room for improvement and expansion, but I wanted to share it with everyone for those who want to tinker with it:

What's the impetus for always making Priestess fall in with GS in your goblin slayer fix fics since you usually make the Newbie Party the heroes? In the source material, her original falling in with him was the result of her friends getting slaughtered and him scooping her up in the aftermath - if the massacre never occurs, she would logically wind up staying with the newbie party and...not being a piece of shit. Normally, right wing extremists radicalize people who 1) already are shitty but aren't willing to be open about it or 2) are otherwise well adjusted but are extremely emotionally vulnerable and can thus be manipulated. I don't know that Priestess is shittier than the rest of Newbie Party when we meet her (insofar as they all took a quest to go wipe out a goblin hideout - she just lived long enough to get radicalized). So if they all live, why does she go on to join forces with GS rather than stick with her friends in the aftermath since they're...alive and not either dead or retiring? Is there something you find particularly terrible about priestess that makes you want to punish the concept of the character, or?

If the rookies had survived in the novels and gone on to be Goblin Slayer's devoted haremites (Warrior would never have lived), I wouldn't be writing fix fics for them. By living on in a harem fantasy where racism is virtue, Priestess is made to represent what I split her off from the rookies to exclude and condemn; the conquering male hero's sweet supportive little virgin love interest, whose purity must be preserved for GS while independent, intellectual and active women (Wizard and Fighter) get killed and raped. She's the vulnerable white woman who has to be protected from the green skinned rapists.

At one point GS literally needs a female virgin to lie beside him for a healing ritual. Which has to be Priestess, as the 'strong' female hero conducting the ritual is 'not pure' ie a rape victim. Symbolical rejected from the Love Interest spot that only the little fetishized virgin is pure enough for. I can't separate her from Goblin Slayer's poison, because she's a love interest created for him. I suppose I find the trope of the supportive wifey devoted to her man so problematic, most of the non-action, 'feminine' girls I write about are gay.

Also, Priestess is a religious figure, which unfortunately puts her in the cross hairs of indoctrination. The number of Christian Trump supporters, including fairly decent people I've known for years, is simply shameful.

✨- How did you come up with the OC’s name?

Ellis "Elysium 'Ellie' Grimmsbane" Turley-Sessamine started as just Ellis Turley, because it was the most white, boring, bland name to contrast with their chosen chuuni name, Elysium Grimmsbane. (This ended up being a blunder because I ended up making them Korean on their dad's side, but c'est la vie.)

I ended up shortening their name to Ellie for symbolic reasons (Ellis and Elysium acted in different ways, where Ellie was a synthesis of the two), and they eventually found their birth mom, U'tlunt'a Sessamine.

I use different combinations of their name in different settings. More fantastical settings get Elysium where more mundane ones get Ellis, and so forth.

🌼 - How old are they? (Or approximate age range)

Ellie is 13 almost 14 and will tell you the fraction of the year as well. I've also rp'd them in their early 30s once they have kids.

🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)?

They have two canon partners, their elf princess girlfriend Nymra Simeon, and their healer goblin boyfriend Mango Sunwood.

🍕 - What is their favorite food?

Anything with a ton of sugar, because being half-fey they need a lot more sugar to survive. They're rather infamous for canonically making that pizzadilla cake that went viral on here a while back, but making it even sweeter.

💼 - What do they do for a living?

Odd jobs. They ran inventory for a magic shop as a kid, they're in school to become the Night Court Archmage like their birth mom, they're the personal knight for their girlfriend, they're an adventurer, they're a monster slayer, they'll clean your house, they've worked fast food, they're a stagehand, you name it.

🎹 - Do they have any hobbies?

Reading doorstopper fantasy novels that use way too many thees and thous. Singing and dancing. Talking over movies. Coming up with elaborate schemes. In Exordium specifically they like to collect unique old scrap junk they find. Though it's probably not actually from before the war, they like to pretend it is.

🎯 -What do they do best?

I genuinely do think their skills lie in both their big-hearted empathetic nature as well as their meticulous planning ability. They're kind of a middling mage and fighter, but their abilities highly depend on their relationships so it's fine.

🥊 -What do they love to do? What do they hate to do?

Ellie HATES swimming and going to the beach and all that. They also don't really like wearing swimwear or skintight/revealing clothing.

They love watching movies and joining clubs.

❤️ - What is one of your OC’s best memories?

Any one of their reunions with their loved ones after a long time apart. Any successful plan that goes off without a hitch, with everyone coming home safe and sound.

✂️ - What is one of your OC’s worst memories?

They have a few. In Prophecy, it'd probably be the chain of events that led to them giving V'rylla a bit of their soul, tied with them feeling like they contributed to the chain of events that led to Marie's death.

In Exordium so far, it's when they lost their legs, and the whole period of time as they were adjusting to that. They felt like a huge burden on this giant quest that was their own idea, especially not being able to travel on their own.

🧊 - Is their current design the first one?

Nope! Ellie is weird because I was intentionally tweaking their design over the course of their original campaign, Prophecy. They have a slightly different design in all of their aus, and for Exordium as well. They just have such a fun little mix-and-match set avaliable for their various hair/eye/skin colors.

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

A large number of things, mainly my own life as a cringe little nerd teen, but also Kaido from Saiki K and Angel from Hatoful Boyfriend. You can still kinda see it in them.

🌂 - What genre do they belong in?

They're so versatile, as a chuuni. They're either a plucky and naive young kid in a high fantasy or a kinda cringe weirdo in a non-fantasy.

💚 - What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality?

Agender (but not really going for perfectly androgynous!) and poly bisexual.

🙌 - How many sibling does your OC have?

1 that they were raised with in Prophecy and 1 adopted sister. Thrandy is their canon half-sibling in Prophecy as well, and Lyth eventually also gets the sibling treatment. In Exordium they are one of a set of triplets, though they still have the canon brother they were raised with. So, anywhere between 1 and 4 depending on your definitions.

🍎 - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?

In Prophecy, they're very close with their parents but they started the campaign kind of going through a phase where they thought that they were all boring, which was eventually debunked as they learned more about the world. Their bio dad is their adoptive dad's brother and they were a little frosty towards him at first but warmed up quickly. Their bio mom they were terrified of at first before they knew that she was their bio mom (because their girlfriend Nymra was also very scared of her due to a childhood discipline-related interaction) but after getting to know her, they decided that she was the coolest ever.

In Exordium, they're still pretty close with their adoptive parents, but the relationship is more strained because of the difficult living situation they're in as nomadic junk scrappers. When they eventually find out about their bio parents they're going to be somewhat hurt, but eventually come around about the circumstances of their separation.

🧠 - What do you like most about the OC?

I love how many layers and sides to Ellie there are. They really shine in facets. They're fun to angst about, they're fun to do shenanigans with, they're fun to write some serious storyline with, they're fun to use as an excuse to overanalyze things.

✏️ - How often do you draw/write about the OC?

I don't draw them NEARLY as much as I used to, but I still write for them from time to time because of all the active rps they're still in, in one form or another.

💎 - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC?

Many times. But never permanently. I just like to scare my friends with the notion.

💀 - Does your OC have any phobias?

They have a fear of deep water. Originally I was going to give them a repressed memory of an almost-drowning. They also canonically had a general fear of vampires due to a repressed childhood incident with one. This also kind of manifested as Ellie simply never behaving normally when forced to interact with the vampire NPCs and enemies in the campaign.

🍩 -Who is your OC’s arch-nemesis or rival?

The trapped angel, V'rylla, is kind of the ultimate enemy in every one of their settings. She always is close to Ellie and often in their head, subtly manipulating them into giving their soul away in pieces to her.
