Part of the enjoyment of watching stuff like The X-Files or Buffy or Star Trek or whatever is that like. Yes, there are some excellent episodes that are truly incredible, but sometimes an episode is the dumbest shit you've ever seen in your life AND IT'S DELIGHTFUL.

I mentioned this to a friend yesterday and she was like "Oh yeah because you know there will be good episodes again so it doesn't bother you!" but no. The bad episodes are fun on their own for me. I don't always want a slick streaming series with 8 episodes where each one is a work of tightly written cinematic excellence. I can enjoy that, too, but sometimes I want an episode with the dumbest premise known to man. Not all dumb, not all the time, not badly made or created as a joke, but just...silly but heartfelt.

Like yeah, okay, I love getting an episode where Brad Dourif is channeling the dead and it's beautiful and tragic and thought provoking and powerful, but sometimes I also enjoy "the problematic weirdly sexy genderfluid Amish people turned out to be aliens you guys" performed without a breath of irony.

ugh mulder is really just such a sweetie pie of a character. i mean he has his flaws (any good, compelling character does) and the writing does do him injustice at times, but he’s really soooo !!!!! and i just really really like the way that he likes scully.

thinking of all the guys scully was involved with/liked and how they all just never truly got her. But Mulder from the very start, took her seriously, respected her, listened to her opinions and valued them (even if he sometimes didn’t follow through or ignored it)

he has alwaysss been impressed by how her mind works!!! Quoting her thesis!! “rigid in a wonderful way” all the ways he acknowledge that she had saved him/others/the situation with her medical knowledge

And then his million and one dumb jokes, and flirty quips just to get her to smile and laugh. And all the wonder and mystery in how he sees of the world that ignites scully’s own curiosity!

I think scully was just so seen by mulder in ways that no one did before. and he gave her space to be however she wanted to be.

And can be so so so so SWEET with her, especially when she feels vulnerable bc he knows it’s so hard for her to be that way, I need to bite something to stop myself from screaming.

And of course, just the way he loses his mind a little when she’s in danger. like he literally will go to the ends of the earth of her. Sometimes i remember he did that and i have to pause and clutch my heart.

anyway, i just think there are actually lots of ways that mulder just as a person, has been so good for/to scully and i really do see why above all, they really are best friends (and why the yearning smacks you in the face when you’re watching the two of them - bc of how they see each other and how they have a deep appreciation of the other just as they are)

can you tell i was watching the unnatural on my lunch break today & then haven’t stopped thinking about them since …

You're telling me Fox 'Martyr' Mulder didn't recognize his feelings immediately and decide to painfully carry a torch for the better part of a decade? You're telling me Dana 'Repression' Scully didn't press everything back until she was so undeniably in love that the wind got knocked out of her?

꩜ Room Content: GN! Researcher! Reader x Yandere! Ivory Wraith, no gendered terms for reader, mild horror(?), lmk if I missed out anything! ꩜ A/N: omg minecraft horror mod videos... is it by any chance The Obsessed? Hmmm honestly any character could have eldritch potential if you try hard enough. Tried out a new way of writing for this one, lmk if it's effective for this fic! ꩜ Spin this wheel and submit a prompt + character for a quick blurb!

Experiment 3LD, helmed by the renowned Dr. ▇▇▇▇▇. The experiment will be conducted over a period of 44 days. See below for the assistant researcher's compiled voice notes:

1VRY.

Day 4, 10.03am - Otherwise known as the Ivory Wraith, we have managed to contain it within a temporary holding cell for the time being. A more advanced enclosure facility is currently being built for it. Although we are still unsure of exactly its abilities work, a strict rule of no mirrors within a set radius has been implemented.

Day 13, 12.45pm - Monitoring the experiment subject proves to be challenging. Its behavior seems to vary wildly from staying abnormally still, akin to a statue carved from pure ivory, to clawing at its neck and stalking to and fro frantically in its cell. The sight is wildly unsettling resulting in all of the other researchers vacating the observation room.

Day 21, 4.38pm - It seems that we have managed to procure a relic related to the experiment subject. It is an ivory necklace, inset with deep blue jewels. The Ivory Wraith seems to have the ability to sense whenever someone is in contact with the relic, where as soon as one of the other researchers touches a part of the necklace, it immediately appears in front of the observation glass, its expression terrible and haunting. Due to this, most of the other researchers have requested to leave the research team, leaving myself as the sole and resulting, assistant researcher.

Day 32, 6.20pm - 1VRY has appeared to have realised that the sole researcher left on behind the observation glass is myself. Strangely enough, its aggressive behavior has lessened, as long as no contact is made with the ivory necklace relic. Now, it usually spends its days hovering around the front of its cell where the glass is, its gaze never parting from my position. Occasionally, trills and whispers are heard from the otherwise quiet surroundings. Its larger, more fully equipped enclosure facility is finally done and attempts to transfer 1VRY will be made in the coming days when the team is fully prepared.

Day 40, 10.13pm - Preparations by the researcher team, consisting solely of myself, and the moving team are almost complete. 1VRY's behavior has reverted back to before, where it is erratic and volatile, prone to lashing out at the observational glass whenever my presence is requested elsewhere, resulting in scratches engraved into the glass. The whispers have also grown in frequency, although no one else has reported hearing anything. Additionally, the same behavior is observed when someone else other than myself is also in the observation room. This has made it difficult to efficiently prepare for its transfer but with consistent effort, we estimate that it could be done in about 4 days' time.

Day 42, 11.04pm - The moving team has just packed up and moved the ivory necklace relic to the new enclosure facility. This however, contradicts the earlier observations of how 1VRY reacts aggressively to the relic being touched by people other than myself. As of right now, it is still continuing its previous docile behavior of simply staring through the glass. Stranger yet, it seems to shift into something more unnatural between bleary blinks. Something smiling too wide with too many teeth, its usual blue eyes a vivid red, along with a swath of tentacles behind its form. However, unnatural does not necessary equate to threatening, perhaps this could be a sort of tempting and alluring another individual. Or it could just be a mirage ability it has? Note to self: Stop staying too late in the observational room...

Day 43, 11.49pm - Terrible miscommunication has occurred between myself and the moving team. It turns out that the ivory necklace was not moved by them. And yet, no one else has come into contact with the relic. 1VRY's transfer must be done immediately with how the certain preparations only allow us a limited timeframe of working with it. There is no choice but for me to search for the relic so that the transfer can go through in the next few hours. Despite the ongoing panic beyond the glass, 1VRY has taken on a sort of behavior that suggests attraction towards something in the observational room. There is no available time for myself to properly document its new state as of the current situation, and it does not help that the lights overhead have been flickering. [Faint static can be heard before the voice note ends.]

Day 44, 12.11am - [The voice note is interspersed with bouts of static, making it hard to decipher at some parts.] I... I don't understand. Why is the ivory necklace in my ▇ab coat pocket? I haven't touched the relic since the contact tests c▇nduct▇d on it on Day 22. This makes no s▇nse. [Sounds of shuffling, presumably the researcher moving.] 1VRY...?

Day 44, 12.29am - [Alarms blare overhead. The static grows worse.] Thi▇ is terrible. The lights in th▇ holdin▇ cell have g▇ne out, altho▇gh it remains o▇ in here. There shou▇ be a flashl▇ght here somewhere. [Sounds of shuffling, then a click, presumably the flashlight turning on.] F▇ck f▇ck f▇ck f▇ck. Where is it? [A chilling laugh is heard, followed by a low trill before the voice note cuts out abruptly.]

Day 44, 12.44am - [The voice note is eerily quiet, no alarms or commotion in the background. The voice speaking is new.] Presented as gift, there is no thief. Drown with me. Forever.

Additional information:

Dr. ▇▇▇▇▇ has put out an order for this experimental failure to be kept under wraps. Not a single soul outside of the organisation can learn of this. Although, there have been rumors swirling of a mysterious file on their desk. [3LD - "Assistant Researcher"]

I know why the writers had Maggie in her dying moments saying the thing about William and I also know dying brains come up with all sorts if the person can speak. But it annoys me that Maggie's last moment becomes about William and not about her relationship with Scully or Mulder.

If she had to say anything at all because never having last words is as painful as having some. And nothing would have been even more poignant because it means the last words were whatever random conversation they had had, with neither of them realising it was the last time they would speak.

But as she had to have a line I really wish she had said something direct to one of them.

For Scully something like '"Of course he was Dana". In the moment it has no context and would confuse Scully but it ties back to what Maggie had said to grieving baby Scully back in Beyond the sea.

With how Maggie is portrayed as the series goes on, I can see her regretting the " he was your father" comment. In a 'I want to say something comforting to my daughter but my brain is misfiring so that is what comes out way' it would have been a better Scully and her Mom moment. Scully was going to be devastated anyway.

For Mulder, and this one makes more sense as Maggie was looking at Mulder, something like "you're a good boy Fox" giving Mulder the moment he never got with his parents. She was the only one he seemed to tolerate calling him by his first name and it speaks to the closeness they had at times in the series. The Scully women all seemed to 'get' Mulder in different ways and it would be a nice Mulder Maggie moment of which there was a few thoughout the run.

Anyway random musings because I watched that episode last night but anything would have been better than the William line.

i have so many thoughts after watching per manum, this is not happening & deadalive - but you know what I keep going back to? Scully being sooooo damn certain that Mulder is the only choice to be the father of her child. 

Literally both times we see a direct question posed to Scully about becoming a mum, she turns to Mulder as the potential father. 

In home, when Mulder, addressing solely Scully’s journey into motherhood, asks her to find someone with good genetics, she looks at him and asks “what about yours?” ITS SO !!!!!!!!!! Because the implication is sooooo clear - would you have good genetics to help me have a baby. 

And then in per manum, when Dr Perrenti asks her if she has someone in mind and that he can walk her through donor catalogues etc., Scully’s immediate concern was not WHO to ask but HOW to ask him. Watching her say that made me weird levels of feral, because what do you mean you have no hesitation, no second thoughts about who deserves to be the father of your child!!!!! 

Scully is always so careful about her choices (i.e. med school, joining the fbi etc.) and has a need to have her choices validated by others, which is common arc we see her struggle through in many episodes. Then, to have her be SO certain that if anyone were to father a child with her, of course it would be Mulder. There’s no other choice, there was never any other choice (despite what later plot lines might imply). 

And honestly, even Mulder leans into this a bit. Thinking of Emily and how Mulder just slipped into taking care of Emily so easily, because this was Scully’s child. Sure, he had reservations, but once Scully decided she wanted to raise this little girl, Mulder was fully alongside her. (I still think of him lifting Emily when she was sick and my heart just feels pain). 

Genuinely makes me want to cry because I think it really shows how much they love each other (whether they know it/have admitted it to themselves or not). And my personal take, is that Mulder and Scully, by s4 (probably end of s2 tbh), already considered the other family. In the sense that, hell or highwater, they were bonded in some transcendent way, and nothing will erase/change the very permanent mark they’ve already made in each other. That whatever happens, they will always have a path (back) to each other. 

In, deadalive at the funeral Scully says, all of Mulder’s family is gone and Mulder is the last. And I just knowwwww that Scully always felt that Mulder deserved to have a family, deserved to have his name/legacy preserved, and wanted to give that to him. You see this in the ways she will always consider/defend who he is as a person (thinking of early S2 when the files were gone and also Demons and closure/sein und zeit). 

Skinner says ‘I don’t truly believe Mulder’s the last’ - I can’t fully tell what exactly skinner was implying but I want to believe (hehe) that he’s referencing Scully’s pregnancy. Scully’s face shows a whole range of emotion after that but I also want to believe she’s considering what it now truly means to be carrying his baby. 

Mulder usually has all the pretty words of declarations and long, yearning gazes (which I love love love) but omg to me, scully without hesitation, without question, choosing to have a baby that’s half mulder (esp when the usual method of getting there, i.e. being married/being in a relationship is not there) is one of the most beautiful acts of love from scully to mulder. And I don’t think mulder truly even knows it!!!!!!! 

Mulder wants a family because it was robbed from him. He also wants Scully to have her child because she was robbed of her choice to motherhood. But Scully, Scully’s choice is to have a family, a child with Mulder, because she wants to bring back that kind of love to both of them.
