Diasporas Marking Identity: Minari (Chung, 2020)
Tumblr media
Minari, is a semi-autobiographical film, based on Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung’s own journey of moving to Arkansas in the 1980’s. In Minari, parents Monica and Jacob are Korean and have moved from Korea to California and now to Arkansas in the hopes of giving their children, Anne and David, the best lives they can. The family encounters Paul, a kind and hard-working (if extremely religious) war veteran who helps Jacob start his farm. Monica is (not-shockingly) unhappy and unfulfilled in their new home, so they decide to bring her mother, Soonja, over from Korea to live with them.
youtube
It’s interesting to note that Minari is set in the 1980’s but does not explore the prejudice, oppression, and violence that Asians and Asian-Americans were facing in America following the end of the Cold War in 1989 and the Tiananmen Square massacre in June 1989. Instead, themes of diaspora, cultural identity, migration, and arrival are explored largely within the family’s home.
When Soonja arrives, David, for no apparent reason, has an immediate dislike for her saying multiple times that she is not a “real” grandma according to his definition. He seems to carry a sort of sojourner mentality wherein he singles Soonja out as alien and strange to him, despite the fact that she is his grandmother. Soonja in response loves David unconditionally (even when she should maybe be a bit harder on him), and seems to have no problems with this accommodation to this new lifestyle and place.
youtube
The family lives in such a remote place that their house and land begin to serve as sort of a “third term” according to Stuart Hall. They all share elements of their Korean heritage and culture, but have also all assimilated into American society to different extents. It’s implied that David and Anne were born in America, David almost only speaks English and rejects his grandma and the Korean foods she brings them.
youtube
Jacob and Monica came to America to help each other and build a life together, but they are frustrated that they have been working the same jobs for years and do not feel like they have gotten anywhere. Soonja has just gotten to America from Korea and is excited to share her culture with her grandchildren. The family navigates the nature of cultural identity as a process of both being and becoming, while acclimating to their new surroundings and working through interpersonal tensions.
----------------------------------------
What do you make of David's insisting that Soonja isn't a "real" grandmother? Do you think this reflects on him or on her? Is this opinion just because of her character or is it motivated by their cultural differences?
What are your thoughts on the minari plant itself? What images/ideas might it invoke in the viewer?
Do you feel that this movie accurately represents the journey of migration and arrival and the notions of cultural identity as fluid that Stringer discusses?

Service Robotics Market Size, Revenue Trends and Growth Drivers - 2028
The service robotics market size is projected to reach USD 84.8 billion by 2028 from USD 41.5 billion in 2023; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.4% from 2023 to 2028.
Growing adoption of robots for new applications, surging use of IoT in robots for cost-effective predictive maintenance, and increasing use of disinfection robots due to rising cases of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are driving the growth of the service robotics industry. Robots are increasingly being adopted for new applications due to advantages such as increased productivity, streamlined processes, and greater workplace safety.
Service robotics market for aerial robots expected to grow at highest CAGR during the forecast period
The service robotics market for aerial drones is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period.  UAVs are garnering high demand from the agriculture industry due to the need for improved and efficient farming, driven by the growing demand for food to fulfill the requirements of the growing global population.
Professional UAVs are considered a low-cost alternative to traditional aerial photogrammetry for surveying and mapping. For photography and filmmaking, professional UAVs offer unique advantages over conventional methods, such as extended range, agility, and the ability to film acrobatic shots.
Service robotics market for software component to grow at higher CAGR than that of the hardware component during the forecast period
The market is estimated to be higher for the software component as the deployment of service robots is likely to become more application-specific. Several companies are developing software to map 3D data collected by UAVs.
Software are generally used for semi-automation of UAVs to maintain their stability since the takeoff and landing of UAVs can be a challenge for UAV operators. This feature is easy to program and inexpensive.
Research and space exporation application to grow at higher CAGR during the forecast period
The research and space exploration segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, attributed to the rising government funding related to space exploration.
For instance, in 2020, the US government provided USD 22.6 billion to NASA. In 2019, the European Space Agency received funding of USD 15.9 billion from its 22 member states.

Professional robots to hold a larger share than that of personal and domestic robots during the forecast period
The professional service robots are expected to hold a larger market share as compared to domestic service robots during the forecast period. The service robots used for professional applications include drones, agricultural robots, inspection robots, humanoid robots, exoskeletons, construction robots, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) among others.
Humanoid robots are used in various industries, such as retail, hospitality, education, archeology, rescue applications, and space. For instance, Robotmea Middle East, an outcome of the partnership between Robotron Incorporation (Australia) and Minirobot Corporation (South Korea), is developed to redefine education by adding robotics and AI in the existing curriculums of schools, colleges, and universities. Exoskeletons are used in industries to increase the endurance of workers. For instance, in January 2020, Delta Airlines (US) partnered with exoskeleton company Sarcos Robotics (US) to help employees lift luggage.
Service robotics market in North America to hold largest market share during the forecast period
The factors driving the market in the North America include the high per capita income, ongoing research programs, increasing aging population, and shortage of labor due to stringent immigration laws.
Mexico is still a developing country, and many service robots have not penetrated Mexico due to their high cost. Mexico can offer a good opportunity for service robots owing to a strong agriculture industry and various free trade agreements signed by the country. The following table lists some of the players operating in this region.

Little Forest
Tumblr media
Salah satu film favorit gue !! Little Forest rilis tahun 2018 tapi gue baru nonton di tahun 2020, nyesel ga nonton daridulu hahaha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tandem Solar Cell Market is Booming Across the Globe by Share, Size, Growth, Segments and Forecast to 2025
To optimize efficiency in the tandem solar cell market, companies have begun shifting from single-junction limits to a multi-junction configuration. Tandem solar cell are a new type of thin-film photovoltaic cells that consist of two or more cells that absorb the bulk of sunlight. Tandem-junction cells provide a higher module efficiency over their single-junction alternative as they can split the solar spectrum into multiple bands that are covered separately. This enables the surpassing of efficiency of single-junction solar cells that have nearly reached their theoretical limit.

Tandem Solar Cell Modules Raise Efficiency of Single Junction Devices by Several Notches
A desire to move away from fossil fuels coupled with greater investments in cleaner energy systems is expected to be the biggest driver in the tandem solar cell market. Although single junction devices are close to achieving the peak of photovoltaic efficiency, tandem solar cell modules can provide a significant boost. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the automotive, oil & gas, chemical, transportation, and aviation industries and they have either reduced production or halted it entirely in some cases. Even renewable energy projects did not get the attention they deserve due to the focus of policymakers being elsewhere. Naturally, this had had a cascading effect on R&D investment in the tandem solar cell market.
Precise Manufacturing Sequence Compound Challenges Faced in Tandem Solar Market
While undoubtedly an exciting prospect, manufacturing complexities resulting in high costs remain a major challenge to be overcome in the tandem solar cell market. Tandem solar cell comprise a parallel connection of more than two cells. To manufacture a solar tandem cell, the technological sequence must be so precise that each succeeding step does not tamper with the previous one. When it comes to mass production, tandem solar cell have to navigate the limits of single cell efficiency.
Hybrid Cells Hold Promise but Held Back in Tandem Solar Cell Market By Lower Efficiency
Tandem solar cell with silicone are more efficient than hybrid, organic, and non-organic cells. Silicon mixed in tandem with CIGS, CZTS, polymers, and perovskites produce highly promising results, boosting overall efficiency of the tandem solar cell. Hybrid tandem solar cell are created by fusing layers or elements of various PV technologies to convert energy across a wider spectral range. Hybrid tandem solar cell are ideal for flexible and semi-transparent modules but are still in the early commercialization stage on account of a lower efficiency.

Collaborations Underway to Make Perovskite-silicon Viable in Tandem Solar Cell Market
In North America, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is researching multiple hybrid tandem solar cell ventures in order to build viable and commercially ready prototypes. In 2020, NREL scientists collaborated with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology to develop commercial perovskite-silicon solar tandem cells over the next few years. Similar efforts are underway in Europe, especially in Germany as it seeks to bring perovskite-silicon into industrial production. Some companies profiled in this report on the tandem solar cell market are Saule Technologies, Tandem PV, Fraunhofer ISE, GreatCell Solar, Frontier Energy Solution, Oxford Photovoltaics, Xiamen Weihua Solar Co.,Ltd, Toshiba Corporation, Dyesol, and FrontMaterials.

JANUARY 2021 GOLD STAR MEDIA SCHEDULES & REVIEW
Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of February 7 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.
Threads do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.
These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Reminder: December schedule posts are due by the end of January 7 KST. Please do not post schedule posts in the fmdschedule tag.
OVERALL COMPANY
The company holds their annual meeting near the end of the month to go over goals and plans for the new year and congratulate their artists (and other staff) on a job well-done in the previous year. Also typical, they’ll do their annual health check for the purposes of media-playing caring about their artists’ health. 2020 was a good year for the company’s profits and public relevance, even if things began to get messy behind the scenes. The meeting doesn’t show any sign of acknowledgement about the any behind-the-scenes planning problems, instead focusing on boasting achievements by their artists in Korea as well as other large foreign markets with the aim of “raising morale”.
Important dates:
January 26: Meeting for company artists and those who work directly with them (managers, PR, etc.) headed by CEO Bang Sunyoung. Gold Star Media’s goal statements and overall plans for 2020 will be delivered.
Various dates (up to individual muse): As per usual January Gold Star custom, all group members and soloists will be asked to individually schedule beginning of the year medical check-up appointments on Gold Star’s dollar if they have not had one in the past six months. This will be slightly media-played as it is every year by the company as the company having a clean bill of health regardless of the results, although any medical concerns will be privately addressed.
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 1
"Eight” is the hit everyone expects it to be and is a good omen as the release that ushers in the new year for Gold Star. Promotions are kept simple, as they usually are for her since she doesn’t need much push to succeed with the public, and she’ll film an acoustic performance video of “Eight” as a gift to her fans. She’ll be revisiting some old songs in the practice rooms behind the scenes as well to prepare for an upcoming mini-concert of her own on Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook.
Important dates:
January 4: “Eight” Acoustic Ver. video filming (to be released: January 10).
January 9: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day One at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: BC Soloist 1, BEE, Dimensions Soloist 3, Lucid).
January 11: KBS Cool FM Volume Up radio show guesting.
January 30: End of music show promotions.
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 2
After the end of music show promotions, she’ll fly out to L.A. to do some networking and film an English interview there to promote the English version of her latest single. Gold Star has marketed it as her debut American single in an effort to rewrite her unsuccessful effort a few years ago. Gold Star would like to begin to promote her more online as well to reach more young fans, so she’ll film a cover video that will be uploaded to Gold Star’s Youtube channel, something they plan to have her do a semi-regularly from now on.
Important dates:
January 10: End of music show promotions.
January 18: Front Row Live Ent interview.
January 23: “Tango” cover video filming (to be uploaded: January 31).
GOLD STAR SOLOIST 3
He flies back out in the second week of the month to begin the North American leg of his world tour. He’ll tour for two weeks across the United States before he flies back to Seoul and has the remainder of the month free once again to recuperate and so that he can attend the company-wide meeting.
Important dates:
January 9: Before We Begin tour concert at House of Blues in San Diego, CA, USA.
January 10: Before We Begin tour concert at The Van Buren in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
January 13: Before We Begin tour concert at Granada Theater in Dallas, TX, USA.
January 14: Before We Begin tour concert at House of Blues in Houston, TX, USA.
January 16: Before We Begin tour concert at The Basement East in Nashville, TN, USA.
January 18: Before We Begin tour concert at The Beacham in Orlando, FL, USA.
January 19: Before We Begin tour concert at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, USA.
January 21: Before We Begin tour concert at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, NC, USA.
January 22: Before We Begin tour concert at The Fillmore Silver Spring in Silver Spring, MD, USA.
SILHOUETTE
Silhouette have a busy month without awards show to attend. On the second, their first day back to regular work after returning from the cruise and tour, they’ll hold a press conference to hype up their upcoming concerts. They’ll be asked and expected to answer questions about the concept (”til death do us part” / “seduction, desire, betrayal, revenge”), the songs they’ll be performing, and their feelings preparing for the concert without spoiling the set list or special stages. They’ll then hold four concerts over the course of the month, two in Seoul, one in Tokyo, and one in Los Angeles. In between concerts, they’ll fly to Bangkok to film their comeback M/V and shoot photos for the comeback.
Important dates:
January 2: Tonight 37.2°C press conference.
January 9: “Taller Than You” M/V filming.
January 15: Pre-release of “I Miss You”.
January 18: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Central City Millennium Hall in Seoul.
January 19: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Central City Millennium Hall in Seoul.
January 21-22: “You’re The Best” M/V filming, teaser photo shoot, and photo book shoot in Bangkok, Thailand.
January 25: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Shibuya Public Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
January 29: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Club Bound LA in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
ARIA
Aria has to do the final preparations for their comeback before it releases near the middle of the month. They’re running on quite a late schedule, perhaps a result of the poor management that’s slowly becoming infamous within the company, so both the album photo shoots and the M/V filming are rushed to be finished just before the comeback. Luckily, everything is still ready in time and the release goes off without a hitch. Unfortunately, “Eung Eung” doesn’t get the same attention “I’m So Sick” did, although it does succeed at outperforming their last two releases.
Important dates:
January 3: Comeback teaser photo and photo book shoot.
January 10: “Eung Eung” M/V filming.
January 18: Release of “Eung Eung” & Percent mini-album showcase, music show promotions continue through February 18.
ORIGIN
Origin begins their grand world tour this month with five dates in California. They’ll fly out to the United States for those five concerts before flying back to Seoul so that they can make it in time for the company meeting, though it will be close in timing. They’ll continue to tour for the next several months, but management passes down that Gold Star would really like to see them find mega-success in foreign markets this year and there are plans for both a Japanese comeback and a full English-language release before there are any plans for them to make a Korean-language comeback.
Important dates:
January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, Alien, MARS, 7ROPHY, Impulse).
January 16: Map of the Soul tour concert at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, USA.
January 17: Map of the Soul tour concert at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, USA.
January 22: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.
January 23: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.
January 24: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.
IMPULSE
Impulse has one more awards show performance in the form of the second day of the Golden Disk Awards. Before and after that, their priority for the month is to record their next comeback album. It’s their first full-length album since 2018. The sound is overall a bit brighter to match the spring season it will be released in, though the sleek sound they’ve headed toward recently remains in tact.
Important dates:
January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, Alien, MARS, 7ROPHY, Origin).
   ↳ PULS2
PULS2 will be doing a showcase tour in between recording for the full group comeback. They’ll be all over East Asia this month for the beginning of the tour, though they’ll stop back to Seoul in between stops.
Important dates:
January 17: Showcase tour concert at Broadway Theater in Macau.
January 20: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Divercity in Tokyo, Japan.
January 21: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Diverycity in Tokyo, Japan.
January 24: Showcase tour concert at Taipei International Convention Center in Taipei, Taiwan.
January 27: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Namba in Osaka, Japan.
January 28: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Namba in Osaka, Japan.
January 31: Showcase tour concert at Nusantra Hall in Jakarta, Indonesia.
FUSE
In place of any more awards show performances or attendances, Fuse gets back to touring. This time, they have two dates in Japan. It’s their first time touring in several months, so they’ll continue to rehearse beforehand to get everything down for the next few months of finishing their tour. Management is open about their plans for a sub-unit between the leader and main dancer now that the new year has begun, but the pair won’t begin working on their unit debut until next month.
Important dates:
January 9: La Rouge tour concert at Hiroshima Sun Plaza in Hiroshima, Japan.
January 21: La Rouge tour concert at Osaka-jo Hall in Osaka, Japan.
ELEMENT
Now that their comeback music is recorded, Element will throw themselves into mastering the choreography for the title track, as well as two of the album’s b-sides (the latter of which only involves the main vocal and maknae). At the end of the month, they’ll hold a mini fan-meeting to check in with (a few hundred) fans and will be expected to let slip that they’re working on a comeback to appease them. The fan-meeting will be short, but they’ll perform a few of their songs and get the chance to interact with fans who are brought up on stage.
Important dates:
January 31: Mini fan-meeting at Yes24 MUV Hall in Seoul.
FEMME FATALE
Femme Fatale continues their dome tour this month (see November’s schedule for special stages), with two stops in Osaka. While they’re in Seoul, they’ll get news of their comeback plans for the year (Gold Star promises them at least two comebacks) and they’ll receive the demo of their first comeback single of the year, “How You Like That”, before they go in to record it in the studio before the month comes to an end.
Important dates:
January 16: In Your Area World tour concert at Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan.
January 17: In Your Area World tour concert at Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan.

Movie Reviews: The Map of Tiny Perfect Things / Minari
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things
I’m all for a movie that pays tribute to another one, makes references to other films, or even talks about other movies in that same genre (i.e. Scream). But when a movie is just plain bowing at the alter of another movie and failing to come anywhere close to that original, it just makes you want to see that original more. Sorry to start this review this way, but I need to vent. Premiering on Amazon Prime Video today is The Map of Tiny Perfect Things. Its about Mark (Kyle Allen), a teen who is stuck in a a time loop and is constantly repeating the same exact day over and over again. Then he suddenly meets a girl Margaret (Kathryn Newton) who is also in the same exact loop.

The movie is so bowing at the alter of Groundhog Day. It even mentions both Groundhog Day and The Edge of Tomorrow. Last year’s Palm Springs was also bowing at the alter of Groundhog Day, but that at least benefitted from Andy Samberg’s charm. The idea of someone repeating the same day over and over until they get it right has been done countless times since Groundhog Day, like Run Lola Run being one of the better takes on it, but The Map of Tiny Perfect Things just made me miss Groundhog Day that much more. Kyle Allen also looks very much like he’s in his mid-late 20s playing a teen. Kathryn Newton has been a rising star in recent years (Halt and Catch Fire, Lady Bird, Blockers) and she’s good, but this isn’t the best showcase of her talent. The best part of this entire movie was one scene when Mark tries to take Margaret to the moon, so he takes her to the school gym, where there’s cardboard scenery designed by the high school art department, to make the gym look like the moon. It felt like something Michel Gondry would do. In that scene there was all this potential for a better movie...that never happened. Do yourself a favor, re-watch Groundhog Day again instead.

Minari
After premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, Minari has been creating quite a buzz over the last year. I was totally bummed that I missed it at the IFFBoston Fall Focus a few months ago. But lucky for everyone, A24 is releasing the film today! Drop everything and go see this movie!!! Lee Isaac Chung has made one of the first truly great movies of the 2020s. His semi-autobiographical film he wrote and directed truly feels like a personal film and has so much to say about both the meaning of family and the American Dream.

Steven Yuen (so good on The Walking Dead and Burning) is Jacob, the father/husband of the Yi family, a South Korean family, who move to rural Arkansas to start a farm in the mid-80s. The wife Monica (Han Ye-ri) is reluctant about the move and raising their kids David and Anne, but they compromise on staying as long as her sassy mother (Youn Yuh-jung) can come live with them from Korea to help out. I’m not going to say much more, just that this is so heartwarming AND heart-wrenching as you see this family trying to assimilate to America and a father trying to make his job, family and home be the best it can be. It is very rare that a film gets this many accolades and lives up to the hype, but this is one of the best movies of 2020!

Signing Off, 2020.
Tumblr media
Hello, folks.
To say that 2020 has been a ride of a rollercoaster is really an understatement.
Penyebabnya? Karena Amerika Serikat ngebunuh salah satu jenderal Iran (yeah, you know, one of very few countries with nuclear weapons, dan musuh bebuyutannya AS juga, sih).
Singapura, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia. Sampai ke negeri jauh kayak Amerika Serikat, Italia.
Pak Presiden Indonesia bahkan masih sempat-sempatnya nge-tweet soal promosi pariwisata Indonesia saat negara-negara Asia itu mulai melakukan kebijakan lockdown. Wkwkwk, a tweet that will go down in history as one of the dumbest tweets ever from a head of state.
Awal Maret, 2 pasien COVID-19 pertama terdeteksi di Indonesia. Orang Jakarta, kalau nggak salah. Dugannya tertular dari bule Italia.
Waktu itu, kebetulan lagi pertengahan semester menjelang UTS. Tahun ini, aku mulai semester 6, udah tahun ketiga kuliah. Asli, masih nggak nyangka, gitu.
"Serius lockdown?" temenku masih nggak percaya.
"Iya serius," aku jawab sambil nge-scroll Twitter, "beneran lockdown yang nggak boleh keluar rumah sampe didenda, gitu."
Nggak nyangka, kalau hal kayak gitu bakalan jadi majority of 2020 yang dilakuin semua orang.
Iya, serius. Malang. Orang uni-ku pula. Aku duduk di meja belajarku di kos, bengong ngeliatin laptop. Masih nggak percaya. Grup angkatan rame.
Gimana mau kuliah kalau gini ceritanya, aku ngebatin.
WHO akhirnya menetapkan kalau COVID-19 yang awalnya masih berstatus epidemi, 'naik' kelas jadi pandemi. Malang mulai melakukan kebijakan social distancing. Jalan-jalan sepi banget. Anjuran buat cuci tangan setelah keluar rumah berkali-kali kudengar di mana-mana. Stok hand sanitizer, alkohol, desinfektan, bahkan masker PPE menipis.
Sejak mereka ngeluarin album Everyday Life November 2019, aku jadi tertarik banget sama Coldplay. Mulailah tiap hari nonton rekaman live performance mereka di YouTube. Nonton film A Head Full of Dreams juga sampai hafal. Tiap keluar beli makan, Spotify di kantong gamis muter Coldplay. Seenggaknya, aku nggak begitu kesepian.
Lucu juga, ujian online sambil muter album Mylo Xyloto.
Selesai ujian, universitas akhirnya memutuskan buat KBM daring. Kemungkinan besar, sampai lebaran!
What a clown.
Aku akhirnya pulang tanggal 29 Maret 2020. Alhasil, cuma diajarin ngolah data aja. Tapi laporannya tetep menggunung, sih. Cuma, aneh aja gitu kalau nggak ke lapangan, because that's what we're supposed to do :') A Must, even. Aneh aja ngerjain laporan di rumah. Apalagi, puncaknya semester 6 itu pas lagi bulan puasa. Bahkan sampai seminggu sebelum lebaran.
Buat tahun ini, highlight serialku Normal People dan The Crown! Suka banget sama jalan ceritanya. Kalau film, aku nonton beberapa klasik yang belum sempat kutonton, kayak Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, Dead Poets Society. Film yang berkesan buatku itu The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, sampai bela-belain beli novelnya. Manchester United masuk semi-final Europa League. Finish di peringkat 3 Premier League. Marcus Rashford jadi aktivis buat memerangi child poverty di Britania Raya. Ah, sayang Marcus!
Masuk semester 7, aku 'ditarik' temenku buat PKL bareng sama dia. Bersyukur, sih. Dia baik banget soalnya. Alhamdulillaah keterima. Sekarang aku lagi PKL, nih. Doakan saja bisa selesai ya, kawan-kawan. Semester 7 juga online, ya. Termasuk praktikum. Temen-temenku ngusahain bisa Workshop offline, tapi gagal. Sedih deh, setahun penuh nggak ngelapang.
Kerasa banget di semester 7 aku bener-bener unmotivated. Sedih banget rasanya.
Donald Trump dikalahin sama Joe Biden, telak, tapi dia masih nggak mau ngaku kalau dia kalah. Vaksin COVID-19 udah ditemukan dan mulai didistribusikan. Hopefully, we'll get one soon! Coldplay akhirnya release Flags di mana-mana selain Jepang! Sebelumnya, Bellarke nggak endgame. Aduh, ketawa banget. Oh, iya. Manchester United lagi peringkat 2 di tabel Premier League. Doakan semoga nggak clowning lagi hahaha.
Eh, iya. Di awal tahun, aku adopsi kucing! Jenisnya persia. Warna oranye, Embul namanya.
Terima kasih buat para tenaga kesehatan yang jadi people of the year menurutku. Stay safe, folks. Tetep di rumah, jaga jarak. Keluar kalau penting banget, dan jangan lupa maskernya.
I'll be doing my best, I'll see you soon.

Overall Company
CEO Kim has been around less this year, supposedly to focus on fatherhood, but he’s made his presence very known with a less minute insistence that all of his idols attend a large birthday party he’s throwing for his fiance, Seri, for her 41st birthday. He’s the CEO and it’s impossible to say no, so all BC idols will be expected to attend Seri’s party, thrown in a luxury hotel ballroom in Seoul with a semi-formal dress code. The party will be in the evening and will not interfere with Shared Home cast members’ picnic filming that day. At the party, the couple will announce they plan to finally wed after three and a half years of engagement in February of 2020. Some photos from the event are planned to be released to the public.
Important dates:
December 3: Ma Seri’s 41st birthday party in Seoul, South Korea.
BC Soloist 1
Awards season continues with the Mnet Asian Music Awards within the first days of the month. She’s not big enough for BC to negotiate her into year end shows yet, but they would like her to be by this time next year. The first step toward that is continued work on her comeback now that the mini-album has been recorded. She’ll be introduced to the choreography for “Roller Coaster” for this month, as well as choreography for “Offset”. Fittings for stage outfits happen early in the month as well so that she can focus on continuing to perfect her performance throughout the rest of the month. Though she is hard at work, she and the dancers she’ll rehearse with will get time off on the 31st (and January 1st) to celebrate the start of the new year.
Important dates:
December 4: Mnet Asian Music Awards at Nagoya Dome in Nagoya, Japan (also attending: BEE, CHARM, WISH, Alien, Gold Star Soloist 2, Origin, and Impulse).
December 8: Comeback stage and MV outfit fittings.
Decipher
Their comeback comes mid-month and while there’s not a major promotional push for it due to the time of year, but they will be performing at two year end shows. BC isn’t dishing out for overly extravagant stages for them, but they’ll be performing both “Remember That” and “Overcome” at both festivals. Additionally, as a promoting group during the holiday season, they’ll be participating in Music Bank’s special stage Christmas special and will do a performance of “Joy to the World” that will transition into a performance of their b-side “VVITH”. As the year comes to a close, Nene Chicken will release a commercial song recorded with CHARM earlier in the month.
Important dates:
December 14: Performance at KMet Festival at Union Mall in Bangkok, Thailand.

              ↳ Decipher R & V
No schedules for the month.
Important dates:
N/A.
              ↳ CHAMPION
Decipher’s maknae/main dancer/lead vocal is brought into a meeting on the morning of the 8th. They’re not told why, but when they arrive at the BC Entertainment meeting room, they’re joined by Knight’s main vocal 2 and main dancer/vocal/rapper and Unity’s leader/main rapper/lead dancer/vocal, main dancer/rapper/vocal, and lead rapper/vocal. Representatives from management announce to them that they’ve been chosen as members of a BC and Dimensions joint sub-unit effort in collaboration with an American music label. The group will be called CHAMPION and will be marketed as “the Avengers of K-Pop” with a goal of capturing the hearts of the American market and will be a major focus for both companies in 2020. Debut album preparations will not begin until the new year, but this month, the members will begin to be pushed into English lessons in addition to public speaking and US-specific media training both individually and all together. The members have been hand-picked for their performance ability and perceived potential execution of the supergroup concept by top executives of their respective companies. BC Entertainment will work alongside the American label in marketing and management for the sub-group while Dimensions will mostly focus on the group’s music and concepts. This is a major and planned-to-be permanent project between the two companies, with a higher budget for their debut than is planned for any of their respective original groups’ next comebacks and plans for a tour are already underway before they’ve even been announced to the public. This information is all dropped on the chosen members during the meeting. Before leaving, the members are told that the news is meant to be kept strictly secret from the public with no spoilers or hints yet, as a careful promotional campaign is planned for its unveiling.
Important dates:
December 8: Announcement meeting.
BEE
Though they continue to prepare for their end of the month Seoul concerts, BEE will get the chance to warm up their performance skills at the Mnet Asian Music Awards and two year-end song festivals. “Something” will be their main performance song with different stagings for different events due to its great reception this year, but at KBS Gayo Daechukje, they’ll also do a special stage appealing to the more fun side of their sexy concept (admin note: the reference stage only includes three members, but all BEE members will participate in it). At the Mnet Asian Music Awards, their stage will be combined with Gold Star Soloist 2′s (admin note: Gold Star Soloist 2 will be performing “Room Shaker” instead). On top of all of the rehearsals, the BEE members will also be in meetings for their next comeback and will record the entirety of their planned March comeback mini-album this month. BC hopes to recreate “Something”’s success by having a somewhat similar concept for this comeback.
Important dates:
December 4: Mnet Asian Music Awards at Nagoya Dome in Nagoya, Japan (also attending: BC Soloist 1, CHARM, WISH, Alien, Gold Star Soloist 2, Origin, and Impulse).
December 25: Performance at Gayo Daejeon at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, Lipstick, WISH,CHARM, Alien, Unity, Lucid, Aria, Origin, Impulse, Fuse, and Femme Fatale).
December 27: Performance [+ special stage] at Gayo Daechukje at KINTEX in Ilsan, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, WISH, CHARM, Alien, Unity,  Lucid, Aria, Origin, Impulse, and Fuse).
December 28: BEE Winter Party concert at Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea.
December 29: BEE Winter Party concert at Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea.
Knight
After the Japanese version of Now or Never drops early in the month, Knight takes off on the Japanese leg of their tour, which will have them flying to and from Japan three different times throughout the month for concerts at different venues. When they’re in Seoul, they’ll continue preparing for their comeback next month with rehearsal for their stages and the MV filming at the end of the month, though they’ll get some time off when their peers are attending year-end shows and award shows, which BC doesn’t seem to have much interest in sending them to this year in favor of focusing on tour profits.
Important dates:
December 4: Release of Now or Never (Japanese Ver.).
December 6: UNLIMITED tour concert at Marine Messe Fukuoka in Fukuoka, Japan.
December 7: UNLIMITED tour concert at Marine Messe Fukuoka in Fukuoka, Japan.

Important dates:
December 8: Announcement meeting.
Lipstick
Lipstick wraps up their 2019 world tour this month with two concerts in Japan and an encore concert in Seoul in a bigger venue than the one they played for the beginning of the tour. Music show promotions are pretty easy for the month since they’re only promoting a digital single, but as one of the artists promoting during the holiday season, they’ll be performing a special stage of “Santa Baby” on Music Bank, which they’ll have already performed at their two Japanese concerts earlier in the month. They’re continuing to release singles into the lead-up to their Japanese album in March of next year, so this month they’ll record their last lead-up single “Shh” (line distribution).
Important dates:
December 8: Prima Donna tour concert at Kobe World Memorial Hall in Kobe, Japan.
December 15: Prima Donna tour concert at Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan.

December 29: Prima Donna tour encore concert at Olympic Gymnastics Stadium in Seoul, South Korea.

CHARM
Music show promotions for their digital single end mid-month after they attend the Mnet Asian Music Awards and kick off their world tour with three nights of concerts in Seoul. In addition to their concerts, they’re also attending year-end festivals and are scheduled to record  a commercial song for Nene Chicken alongside Decipher early in the month. That’s not all they’ll be in the studio for, though, as this month, they’re tasked with recording for their upcoming album An Ode, which their latest digital single will also appear on.
Important dates:
December 4: Mnet Asian Music Awards at Nagoya Dome in Nagoya, Japan (also attending: BC Soloist 1, BEE, WISH, Alien, Gold Star Soloist 2, Origin, and Impulse).
December 6: Ode To You tour concert at KSPO Dome in Seoul, South Korea.

December 31: Performance at Gayo Daejejeon at MBC Dream Center in Ilsan, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, Lipstick, Alien, Unity, 7ROPHY, Lucid, Impulse, and Fuse).
              ↳ CHARM U
CHARM U will be performing their future single at all of CHARM’s concerts leading up to its April release (including their Seoul and Japan concerts), so an initial “live” version of the song has been recorded and members should have an idea of the choreography even if rehearsals haven’t been very intense. By the end of the month, they’ll be brought in to lay down some final vocals for a more polished version of the track.
Important dates:
N/A
WISH
After their short break last month, the members of WISH are back in action with year-end shows and award shows, for which they’ve be performing both of their singles this year for the most part, “Fancy” and “Whatta Man”. On New Year’s Eve, they’ll be skipping the normal Korean year-end show as they have the past two years in order to perform on a Japanese year-end show. Additionally, they continue in their roles as Estee Lauder brand ambassadors by shooting a new CF for their foundation.
Important dates:
December 4: Mnet Asian Music Awards at Nagoya Dome in Nagoya, Japan (also attending: BC Soloist 1, BEE, CHARM, Alien, Gold Star Soloist 2, Origin, and Impulse).

February 10th 7:00pm Update:
Preliminary Oscar Pool Tallies are In! Some very interesting early results!!
The Tallying Committee is going through a rigorous audit process. Final certified results will be released soon!!
------------------------------------------------------------------
And the 2020 92nd Academy Award Winners are below with my added editorial comments:
More importantly, the Winners of the Oscar Pool will be announced later after Price Waterhouse and the various committees tally all the results!
OK, back to work!
Best Picture - “Parasite” (excellent, but a bit too harrowing for my tastes)
Director - Bong Joon Ho, “Parasite” (loved his multiple comments about drinking in his acceptance speeches)
Actor - Joaquin Phoenix, “Joker” (will never see anything that has slashing)
Actress - Renée Zellweger, “Judy” (we have this on DVR, looking forward to it)
Supporting Actor - Brad Pitt, “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” (he sure is handsome)
Supporting Actress - Laura Dern, “Marriage Story” (loved the movie, but don’t think she did enough to win for this. Scarlett Johansson should have won for JoJo Rabbit)
Original Screenplay - “Parasite”
Adapted Screenplay - “Jojo Rabbit” (love love this movie and am semi-obsessed with the New Zealand writer, director Taika Waititi who was also in it. Listen to his nice voice: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d9/En-uk-Taika-Waititi.wav)
International Feature - “Parasite” (South Korea)
Animated Feature - “Toy Story 4” (so good, cried and cried)
Sound Editing - “Ford v Ferrari” (want to see)
Visual Effects - “1917” (want to see again now that I know what happens. It was too harrowing the first time)
Film Editing - “Ford v Ferrari”
Animated Short - “Hair Love” (want to see)
Live Action Short - “The Neighbors’ Window”
Documentary Short - “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)”
Original Score - “Joker”
Original Song - “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman”
Production Design - “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood”
Cinematography - “1917”
Costume Design - “Little Women” (boo hiss what everyone is saying about the bizarre omission of women and minorities among all the nominations)
Makeup and Hairstyling - “Bombshell” (sort of want to see)
Documentary Feature - “American Factory"
Sound Mixing - “1917”
https://oscar.go.com/news/winners/oscar-winners-2020-see-the-full-list
p.s. I think I saw 10 movies out of all of the movies that had a nomination, not bad for me this movie season:
1917
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Harriet
JoJo Rabbit
Knives Out
Little Women
Marriage Story
Parasite
The Lion King

Blog 10: Parasite
Tumblr media
Ok here’s the big one. Thanks to me being on holiday over the Christmas break I was actually able to see Bong Joon Ho’s big award season darling. In the UK where I live the movie was pulled from it’s planned limited release in favour of a full theatrical run later this year, after an outpouring of praise from the film festival circuit. Since then it’s been the big talking point of the 2020 award season and for a good reason, film’s of this calibre are a rare occurrence, especially from a foreign and seemingly niche market like South Korea. And it’s really everything a prestige movie should be in 2020, politically charged character based drama, presented and shot in the most stylish manner possible, with a real auteur’s  flair for detail and precision. It should go without saying that I absolutely love this movie, but, as with most things, I’m less fascinated by the technical minutiae or even surface level presentation, like the elaborate yet strikingly modern set design or the haunting, minimal score, but I’m interested in what this movie means, what it’s trying to say with both it’s story and it’s mere existence as part of an often overlooked cinematic tradition.
The story of Parasite follows two very different families of four, the Kim family, who live a destitute life between jobs, often relying on cons and scams to get by, and the wealthy Parks family, who fall victim to the Kim family’s latest scheme. The basic setup is that one by one the various Kim’s take over from the previous staff working at the Parks’ lavish, modern abode, with increasing convoluted methods they systematically get the previous worker fired and then slot in a new family member to take their place. The Kim family aren’t strictly villains, more victims of circumstance than anything and the movie is careful to show that the Park’s are far from paragons of justice either. The plot twists and turns from there, there’s intrigue, tension, a magic rock and some almost very literal skeletons in the closet but throughout it all the movie asks questions about class, the corrupting power of money, and the nature of fate and predestination among others. The world of Parasite is a world of contrast, the rich live sleek modern mansions, with perfect lawns and staff to wait on them hand and food, whilst the poor live in decrepit  semi-basements barely making enough to get by. It’s clear than Joon Ho sees a lot wrong with the state of modern Korea, whilst the introduction of American style capitalism in the 50’s and 60’s many have reinvigorated the country economy, it also brought with it all the problems a system like than tends to bring - rampant inequality, systematic oppression of the poor and a growing class divide have long since been issues in Korea, with the digital age and the mass exportation of Korean culture in the last few decades only compounding the issue.
Parasite seeks to address that and more, the Kim family - whilst certainly devious - represent the poor of Korea, desperately attempting to better their circumstances through any means, whilst the Parks’ are the perfect mix of upper-class naivety and elitist arrogance. Through this central dichotomy Parasite not only comments on the current climate in Korea but also on systems of class as a whole, the reason this film in particular seems to connect to more westerners than a vast majority of foreign language film is because it’s themes are so universal, so relatable to anyone living in the capitalist system that it has become a truly global picture. Joon Ho himself has spoken about this phenomenon repeatedly since the movie premiered last year, criticising western outlets and especially award ceremonies like the Oscars or Golden Globes for not including more foreign movies outside of non-English-speaking categories. Whilst that certainly is a big hurdle Hollywood will have to overcome in an increasingly global age, Parasite’s success seems like a step in the right direction, not just for Hollywood but for the global film community. as a whole

Parasite (Korean: 기생충; RR: Gisaengchung) is a 2019 South Korean dark comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won. It stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik and Park So-dam and follows the members of a poor family who scheme to become employed by a wealthy family by infiltrating their household and posing as unrelated, highly qualified individuals.
The film premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2019, where it became the first South Korean film to win the Palme d'Or and the first film to win with a unanimous vote since Blue Is the Warmest Colour at the 2013 Festival. It was then released in South Korea by CJ Entertainment on 30 May 2019. It received universal critical acclaim, and has been hailed as one of the greatest South Korean films ever made and one of the best films of the 2010s. Plot[edit]
The Kim family—father Ki-taek, mother Chung-sook, daughter Ki-jeong and son Ki-woo—live in a small semi-basement apartment (banjiha)[10], have low-paying temporary jobs, and struggle to make ends meet. One day Min-hyuk, a friend of Ki-woo's and a university student, gives the family a scholar's rock, which is meant to promise wealth to whoever possesses it. He suggests that, when he leaves to study abroad, Ki-woo should take over his job as an English tutor to the wealthy Park family's daughter, Da-hye. Ki-woo poses as a university student and is hired by the Parks; Mrs. Park decides to call him Kevin.
Subsequently, the Kim family begins to infiltrate the home of the Parks by recommending each other's services, posing as unrelated but sophisticated skilled workers. Ki-woo tutors and begins a romance with Da-hye. Ki-jeong poses as "Jessica", an art therapist, who agrees to counsel the Parks' restless young son, Da-song. Ki-jeong frames Mr. Park's chauffeur for having sex in the car, and Ki-taek is hired to replace him. Finally, Chung-sook takes over as the Parks' housekeeper after the Kims exploit the long-time housekeeper's severe peach allergy and convince Mrs. Park that she has tuberculosis.
When the Parks leave home to go on a camping trip, the Kim family revels in the luxuries of the mansion. Unexpectedly, Moon-gwang, the former housekeeper, returns. She reveals a hidden entrance to an underground bunker, created by the architect and previous owner of the mansion. Over four years ago, before the Parks moved in, Moon-gwang's husband, Geun-sae, began secretly living underneath the home to hide from loan sharks. After realizing the truth about the Kim family, Moon-gwang threatens to tell the Parks their secret if they do not, in turn, keep hers.
Because of a rainstorm, the Parks return home early from their camping trip, and the Kim family scrambles to clean up the home, while a brawl breaks out among Moon-gwang, Geun-sae, and the Kims. The Kim family trap Geun-sae and a fatally wounded Moon-gwang—she was kicked down a flight of stairs by Chung-sook—in the bunker. After Chung-sook serves her dinner, Mrs. Park reveals to her that Da-song had a traumatic experience years ago when he witnessed a "ghost"—Geun-sae—emerging from the basement. As the remaining Kims hide nearby, Mr. Park complains to his wife about Ki-taek's smell.
Escaping from the Parks' house, the Kims return to their apartment and find it completely flooded due to the storm, and are forced to sleep in a gymnasium with other displaced people. The next day, Mrs. Park decides to host a party for Da-song's birthday. She invites Ki-jeong and Ki-woo, while Ki-taek and Chung-sook are required to attend as employees. In the middle of the party, Ki-woo heads down to the bunker with the scholar's rock to kill Geun-sae. After accidentally dropping the rock down the stairs, he is attacked by Geun-sae, who bludgeons him with the rock and escapes. Seeking to avenge Moon-gwang, Geun-sae stabs Ki-jeong with a kitchen knife in front of the horrified guests. Da-song suffers a trauma-induced seizure upon seeing Geun-sae, and a struggle breaks out until Chung-sook kills Geun-sae with a skewer. While Ki-taek attempts to help Ki-jeong, Mr. Park orders him to drive Da-song to the hospital. In the chaos, Ki-taek, upon seeing Mr. Park's disgusted reaction towards Geun-sae's smell, takes the knife and fatally stabs Mr. Park before fleeing the scene.
Weeks later, Ki-woo has survived the attack and wakes up from his coma. He and Chung-sook are convicted of fraud and put on probation, while it is revealed that Ki-jeong has died from her injury and Ki-taek, who is wanted for Mr. Park's murder, has vanished. Geun-sae’s motives for the attack are a mystery to the public. Ki-woo continues to scope out the Parks' home, which has now been sold to a German family, and sees a message in Morse code from the flickering lights. It is from Ki-taek, who is now living in the bunker. Still living in the semi-basement apartment, Ki-woo writes a letter to his father, vowing that he will one day earn enough money to purchase the house, free his father, and reunite as a family.
