Gonna attempt to figure this out somehow but it looks like it hits everything my brain injury doesn't like.

A made another komebukuro! This is similar to the last one I made - except I did ninepatch sides and this time I added a pocket :D All hand sewn again, and once again made the cords using finger braiding.

there is nothing like learning a bit about a mildly obscure craft, trying to find some more information, and discovering an html blog full of tutorials that hasn't been updated in years. best possible outcome
#this is mostly about the fingerloop braiding website i found the other day#but also there's a link to a clearly very old wordpress blog about backstrap weaving#and i am. ooughghhhh#ohhohohohoohh#i DID mention to my mom that i would kill for an inkle loom. and they're small and not that expensive.

I made a little sewing helper from some leftover fabric of my skirt, some papercutouts, and a lot of the thread-and-really-small-fabric scrap-waste that you always get while sewing:

I am thinking I might fingerloopbraid a little something to put around the edge; looks a little rough like this, don't you think?

Fish two has no tail because I didn't know I was making a fish when I started
#fish 2 also got emergency brain surgery bc a needle broke off inside him and i cant give that to a kitten#so i got a fun cross section of the colours i used#needle felting#fibrecrafts#felting#homepost#mycrafts#hes going to be destroyed but that is his purpose... also had fun fingerloop braiding the string this time

sometimes you get a minor injury doing a handcraft and you can't even be mad bc you are struck with the realization that someone 5000 years ago got the exact same injury doing the exact same thing
#note to self: next time i want to use a really fine thread for fingerloop braiding i need to use a looser tension or finger protection#oh look i said something

The Urge to Create™ arose today and I ended up teaching myself mediaeval fingerloop braiding! I used the five bowes method detailed in this video.

My first attempt, made with acrylic yarn. A bit rough, I dropped the yarn halfway through and had to basically start again from that point, and the tension is all over the place, but I think it's decent for a first try.

And then my second attempt, made with (synthetic) embroidery thread! Much better, I held it so I could tighten the braid with my foot during the early part, so the tension stayed roughly the same throughout the entire process. I also finished it off properly with wrapped ends!
All in all, a fun little craft that only took me a few hours to learn!
Close-ups and comparisons under the cut:

You can see the difference between the beginning and the end of the pink braid in the photos below.

#day rambles#fingerloop braiding#there's a whole bunch of names for this in a lot of different cultures i think

This is my second attempt at medieval fingerloop braiding, using Morgan Donner's youtube tutorial. It's actually two pieces that I (somewhat clumsily) spliced together in the middle.
I had bought twill tape to be the drawstring for a skirt, but that was right before I broke my foot, then sprained it, then broke my leg, so by the time I could draft the pattern for the skirt, I'd lost everything but the fabric and the measurements, lol. So, any excuse to learn a new craft, right?
Of course, as soon as I finished it, the twill tape turned up.
The mostly-finished skirt and the drawstring are currently in a vat of purple RIT dye. I'll continue to post pics as the project progresses.

This was made this afternoon, before the friendship bracelet got started! Overall i found fingerloop braiding to be just as easy to learn, but i got into the flow way quicker and managed to finish it quicker too :-)

Made with holst supersoft, of course.
#fingerloop braiding#medieval fingerloop braiding#it has an awkward little loop at the top bc i wanted to hang it on my door. it hangs there quite nicely

fingerloop braiding projects from this weekend! Not featured are the several flat and round cords i made as practice before trying the more complicated patterns! First braid is ‘a grene dorge of vi bowes’ from fingerloop.org, the second braid is the ‘lace maskell’ pattern from silkewerk.com.

On today’s episode of “skills I picked up far too quickly and then forgot I had”: I made about 2 feet of fingerloop braiding with a fine yarn in under an hour, following a tutorial I found several years ago

And now it’s a bracelet that I will be very gleefully showing the SCA contingent at the local winter ren faire this weekend.

I made another skirt. It feels very ballet-y for some reason, and I love it.

I used the two pieces of knit fabric a friend gifted me, and before I could twist myself into too many knots over what to make of this absolutely gorgeous gift, I just did the first thing that popped into my head initially, which is this. And I'm glad, because I love it.
I also used the rest of cat fabric to make a new collar and cuffs for a winter dress I already own:

I had a few problems with my sewing machine, and I think I need to give it to someone for a check-up, but I think these turned out alright.
I made a little fingerloop braid for the collar, and it was the first time I had to use the full length of the braid, so I tried to tighten the beginning after tying off the end, with decidedly mixed results, as you can see here on the right. The yarn is really shiny and didn't really help.
I also did not have the required grommets for the openings, so I took two metal rings and stichted around them instead. It worked well, and I'm quite proud of the idea.

Progress on my current project ! Having some with stripes and slashing this time around. Didn't take any progress photos for the hosen/pants because it broke my brain a little, lol. I also started doing fingerloop braiding for the lacing cords.
I still have to fix a few things on there, including fixation on the brustfleck, and after that onwards to making the hat !
