O great Owl and thou noble fic-finding rats I come because I have failed to find that which I need.
There is a work, apart of your Anyone universe, where Izuku is writing a Quirk Analysis Paper and he wakes AfO up so he can see a mutation quirk which enlarges AfO's arm. I have combed through all of Anyone and then through your side works that take place in this universe. But I found nothing.
The only thing I can think is that it was a tumblr post or a fanfic one of your blog mates wrote for you. But alas, I am still here.
In exchange I swear that if my firstborn ever starts stealing quirks I will buy all the therapists, and if that fails I will leave him to your fic-finders with no rivers in sight. And they may nibble on him for all of forever.
With reverence and sincerity, -me
I have some bad news and good news for you. The bad news is that his is something I wrote and posted on Tumblr, and you will never find it again even if you scroll through the entire Anyone tag. The good news is that you must be especially lucky as I found it by pure luck in a file I had forgotten.
----------
Izuku, sitting on his bed, books and notebooks opened on all of its surface, clicked his pen. Once, twice, thrice, the sound echoing in the silent apartment without doing anything to bring the answer the teenager desperately needed.
Usually, deadlines weren’t a problem for him. For some obscure reasons, the teachers in his high school were trusting him no matter what he did and forging his mom’s signatures to excuse his many absences had become the routine. However, he needed to finish this paper for tomorrow morning, so Hebisuga could read it and save her grade in Meta Analysis. That way, she would stop worrying so much about this subject, focus back on her Japanese, and write once again her ridiculously good flash cards that she always accepted to share with Yuuto and him.
But right now… Izuku’s brain just wasn’t cooperating.
He got up, his back protesting as he stopped hunching over for the first time in a couple of hours, and he left his bedroom. His notebook in hand, he walked past the bathroom and knocked at the door of the master bedroom, currently invaded by the bane of his existence while his blissfully ignorant mother was away.
The door opened in the second, All for One appearing in front of him, his hair messy and his face showing the trace of the pillow but no sign of sleepiness. The villain was one of those persons who immediately passed from sleep to alertness while Izuku needed three cups of coffee to be semi-conscious.
“What is it?” the villain asked. “Did you-“
“Show me your mutation quirks, please. Preferably the one that can offer some kind of protection.”
“What makes you think that-“
Izuku clicked his pen once again and just stared at the quirk-stealing-fiend.
All for One finally obliged, making his arm grow in size, muscles growing until it had gruesomely swollen up, and he even added some spear-like bones. Bewildered, he answered every questions Izuku had about the drawbacks, the weight, how much he could still move his arm, and so on.
Because if analyzing quirks was his passion and could become a job, words in a book didn’t mean anything to Izuku. He needed to ask questions, to make theories, to see them in action.
Once he was done and had all the elements he needed, he thanked All for One and walked back to his room without offering any explanation. But of course, his roommate didn’t need one.
“Did you just use me to finish your homework? At three AM?”

Prompt#3 ~ Black & Gold
Previous - ♫Kill All The Lights♫ - Reference

Daybreak lustrous skies collapsed around a smooth sea-vessel being drifted across waves and winds alike. A Hyur dangerously juggled knives between deftly skilled hands under thoughts. Fixated into the empty serene ambience, as fliers of the free brushed by with piercing squawks. That frequency traumatically recalled screams from his origins, pleading soul's begging to be saved, helplessly taken, before the same root of an evil deathly hand felt almost like it was able to rip through spiritually and still threatening wedge to loom out and squeeze fearfully grasping his own heart still. He purposefully remained always busy trying to forget his demon's left alive. The bustling lifestyle was still in desire to forge forth, to somehow climb over a daunting wall. But he wasn't immune to the soul-carved scars of his former. Desperate to acquire victory, power, enough that could mark a dent into an impenetrable Fortress. he spent existence never knowing any peace, remaining restless, nerved. A victim chained to the past that even ate his future. Causing an imbalance tensing that nearly brought his juggling to skewer him, gravely to wound. -- until he felt the fabric of chest wear, be tugged backward from his Captain in clad leather. With a conditional care, while emerging with his found answers. "Judas, matey ye alright?" A startled breath came, before a composing inhale showed how close the dirk was to piercing him, the same thing he used to betray so many who jeopardized his mission even gave the same endangerment to him. Naturally when that question came, it was often a lie to themselves firstly before it drew with air, "I am... Did you come to a conclusion, upon how things are different?" While also famously trying to subvert and bury it with a new topic. Although Captain wasn't remarked or touted for his book smarts, people often were comparable in their own stories they told a lot. He was very instinctual and keenly driven. He silently however accepted but still felt the hairs stick up on his tail, not confident in the inflection given. Because these same thing's weren't beyond him either, often can recognize problems when battling them too. Trailing before subsiding and putting his arm over the railing of the ship. "Aye. It's different because I am. When I reached out and you were goin' under 'Bellum' as some shadowy projection, willing t' earn n' lick fortune off selling slaves when we both know, that's not fer us. Repeating th' same steps of our enemies, stooping to them, how does it help? I took you on despite it all because something within me, felt I was capable to be the difference back then. I risked everything even despite possibly dying by yer hands, it would've been worth either way. I owed you, I promised ye t' ferry back to that place. N' we'd settle it all... I wasn't enough back then." He'd admit from the resonate truth of harsh gravity.
"Youth, careless dreaming, I hadn't been hurt or crushed enough, or bled enough, as often the price ov' freedom' cost. To know how to fight, understand how to evolve. Essentially, I couldn't swim against the current ov' our destination, because I wasn't kickin it. Doubt drowns us, anchor limits. -- Our worst enemies are us. It psychs us out, causes us to hesitate. Th' most damning' thing... It kills us with fear of unknown, or I dub it, 'un'... But these things are crafted by us. It's an insignificant version of us. Happiness can only be achieved if we battle against that louder voice in our noggin, thinking it's impossible to vanquish. It doesn't help, it festers, grows like a parasite, or becomes massive from the closest of our other failures, or stacked mates who are inflicted with the same setting, doubt can continuously poison and spread, tarnish, slaughter a whole crew to early seabed graves. Honestly... A sea who really does swallow us." He exhaled pandering with a stroke of fondness to his ship that came from the ashes of his Crimson Phoenix, now the Worldly Finder. The namesake changes alone represented a lot. The polished Midlander who often was the grounding keeping his Captain afloat, was reminded again that supporting or building one another wasn't an action of one-sided development. When operating any vessel, in-order to thrive, achieve it required multiple, a crew. He couldn't do anything alone, it needed to be felt. Understanding patience of growth, accepting things were often when thinking of our dreams they were like being weighed on scales. We often assume just because we can't measure up to what's so far above us on the opposite side, there's no feasible way to equal, or hoist above it. But life isn't a voyage, often recommended or taken alone. Heaps of fortune, wealth, abundance of accomplishment came by accepting every weather, and braving it. Judas frowned briefly before flashing blue. "I see... Then I believe we can commence our real beginning and voyage together. I will follow and entrust everything to this and you. If you can give me the same. I'm wanting to learn to swim as well." He kept the symbolic meaning and extended an agreement of dealing open-palm awaiting handshake. Where once or often, someone who once betrayed would be something to be cautiously, he held the mentality that it wasn't personally done, if anything it hurt the Hyur more, which resulted in him also falling off the handles. Captain saw that the pit of snakes for plummeting into bite was because of his antics of being tense to charm wild, was to be composed to also frantically not give it a reason to fear. He met the extending bonding shake before hooking as a pact sworn. "I'll Captain th' Fates." A new pledge etched. Confidence radiating with a heating warmth to nestle within. "And I'll ensure your back isn't without the wind, I may provide." Each giving off their own sentiments almost like a brotherhood forged and committed deeply invested with a kindred oath. Branding smile's of golden, met.

Keyblade Theorising II
So after posting about the Kingdom Key and Riku’s role in giving it to Sora, someone asked me what I made of Kairi’s keyblade. The result? A bloody essay. Read on for more mad theorising!
Note: contains spoilers for KHIII!
So Kairi gets her keyblade in KHII and it happens thusly: she jumps down to save Sora, gets surrounded by heartless, and they immediately bury her. She calls out for Sora to help her as the heartless’ darkness begin to consume her and then there is a bright flash of light. This bright flash of light immediately kills all of the heartless and then Riku is holding out a keyblade for her (and really, this whole thing can be paralleled with how Sora got his keyblade in KHI). Clearly the light that vanquished the darkness is Riku’s. Think about that: Riku’s light despite him taking the form of Ansem, where darkness is currently winning in Riku’s internal dark/light battle.
Riku’s light, eh? Pretty damn strong.
So I have two theories about where her keyblade came from, and I’m not saying one is better than the other. I’m just kinda laying down my thoughts.
1.) This is Aqua’s keyblade
We know in BBS that Kairi accidentally touching Aqua’s keyblade meant that she inherited it. Which… I always thought was complete bullshit and ran counter to everything that had been established about how bequeathing ceremonies worked (Terra actually performed it for Riku, where Kairi just touched Aqua’s blade and that counts??), but supposedly Kairi’s heart was worthy of the blade which is why it’s legit. I don’t think that this keyblade was forged of Kairi’s personal light because none of the other princesses of heart were able to call forth a keyblade, and the manner in which she gained her keyblade suggests that it didn’t come directly from her, but from an external source.
So let’s assume this is Aqua’s keyblade. We know thanks to KHIII that at some point while Aqua was trapped in the RoD, she lost her keyblade. She had it in II.5, which covers the events of KHI, but lost it at some point during KHII. So it could be that Kairi being in danger called forth the keyblade that was ‘bequeathed’ to her by Aqua, and that’s where it came from, thus in effect leaving Aqua keyblade-less. Aqua ‘losing’ her keyblade shouldn’t be a thing, given that keyblades are connected to the wielder, but if Luxu literally lost his ability to keyblade once he passed it on then this would explain why Aqua suddenly lost her ability to keyblade: it passed on to Kairi, leaving Aqua behind.
This once more shows how powerful Riku really is. Aqua is a full on Keyblade Master but once she has lost her keyblade, that’s it. She’s defenceless. She cannot make another. And yet Riku, if my earlier observations hold any weight, has at least two keyblades in the Kingdom Key and Way To Dawn (later Braveheart).
How did Aqua’s keyblade seek Kairi out? Aqua put her own magic in Kairi’s necklace and given the things we have seen in this series so far, it isn’t too much of a stretch to believe the keyblade zoned in on this magic and ended up with Kairi.
But then why was Riku the one holding it? The fact he could hold it at all, when keyblades typically reject anyone but their true wielder, leads to my other idea.
2.) This is yet another keyblade forged from Riku’s light
So, in effect, this is the THIRD keyblade that Riku is sustaining. The bright light happens, Riku’s light, and suddenly he’s holding yet another keyblade that he quite literally hands over to Kairi. When he gave the Kingdom Key to Sora, it was more of his heart choosing to do so. But he just up and hands her this one. And I think it’s likely due to similar reasons as to why he gave one to Sora: Riku wants to keep Kairi safe.
Despite KHIII utterly ruining any relationship these two had, KHI and KHII actually did a decent job of making it seem that Kairi and Riku are friends. Riku in KHI is literally doing everything in his power to get Kairi’s heart back. He even says that he’ll work with Maleficent and embrace the the darkness more if that is what it takes to save Kairi (whether this is truly genuine or only part of the truth, in that he says this as an excuse to get closer to darkness, is up for debate). The last thing he says in KHI? “Take care of her [Kairi]”. And in KHII, when Kairi and Naminé are surrounded by Nobodies and shit looks dire? Riku swoops in to save the day, and subsequently spends a lot of his time protecting Kairi (he literally wraps his arms around her to protect her from Saïax’s berserker mode). So it isn’t wildly out of character for him to try and give her a means to protect herself, as he did for Sora, by giving her a keyblade. The only difference being that, while the Kingdom Key was actually Riku’s keyblade that he’s passed on, this seems to be a keyblade he forged specifically for Kairi.
Extra: I didn’t know this as I initially typed these musings as I haven’t read the manga, but a friend pointed out that in the manga Luxu seems shocked that Kairi had a keyblade and (with a sort of begrudging respect) asks Riku how the hell he managed to make one for her.
Kairi’s Keyblade: What’s In A Name?
So Kairi’s keyblade is called Destiny’s Embrace (in English) or Destiny’s Place (in Japanese). This emphasis on destiny is interesting to me. Sora, essentially a non-wielder who gained the ability to wield thanks to Riku’s heart choosing Sora over himself, was never ‘destined’ to wield the keyblade. Or, at least, not destined to wield the Kingdom Key (destined to wield Kingdom Key D, however… see this link to another theory that I think holds water). Whereas Destiny’s Embrace suggests that Kairi was always destined to become a keyblade wielder, which is… odd, given that her ‘inheriting’ of the keyblade from Aqua was a fluke. But what WASN’T a fluke was Aqua putting a charm on Kairi’s necklace and saying it would take her to someone that would keep her safe. She was destined to be protected, and sure enough, if Riku did make this keyblade for her, then this destiny is fulfilled. Interesting again to note that Riku, not Sora, was the one protecting her in this instance.
Kairi’s Keyblade: The Paopu Keychain
Why is it that Destiny’s Embrace has a paopu keychain? I have a few ideas, some of which are more plausible than others.
1.) Riku wanted to share a paopu with Kairi
Wow, what a rogue idea! Full (and probably obvious) disclosure: I’m a SoRiku shipper and read a lot of the KHI moments of Riku getting jealous and bitchy as him being jealous that Sora didn’t like him, but let me just take my SoRiku goggles off for a hot second and… put my KaiRiku ones on?? It’s not as crazy as it seems.
As mentioned earlier, a huge part of Riku’s motivations in KHI was protecting Kairi and getting her heart back, and he even thanks Kairi for coming to the island and inspiring him to seek a world beyond Destiny Islands. During his race with Sora in KHI, he says that if he wins then he wants to share a paopu with Kairi (again, let’s say that this wasn’t actually Riku just trying to razz Sora and there was a part of him that did genuinely want to share it with her). If Destiny’s Embrace really is a keyblade that Riku forged for Kairi in order to keep her safe, then the paopu keychain is essentially him finally getting to share a paopu with her as per his request in KHI.
Now, of course, paopu fruits don’t necessarily have romantic connotations all the time. It could be that he just wanted to keep the two of them close, like how Kairi gave Sora her way-finder. Regardless of if this is read as romantic or platonic, Kairi’s keychain being a paopu fruit is symbolic of her relationship with Riku— and I would also extend it to Sora as well. If Riku gave both of them keyblades, he’s kind of like some secret guardian watching over those that matter to him and wanting to keep them safe. He is the origin of all of their keyblades, and in this way binds the Destiny Trio together.
‘Ah, but Alchemist!’ I hear you cry. ‘Riku no longer wants to protect the THINGS that matter, as KHIII made it very clear he cares about one person and one person only: Sora.’
Fair point. I think KHIII did Kairi and Riku’s relationship SUPER FUCKING DIRTY, but it’s also true that Riku’s number one priority is and always has been Sora. Giving Kairi a paopu fruit to keep the three of them together does make sense for his character, but when push comes to shove, Riku would probably push Kairi off a cliff if it would save Sora (I mean come on, RIku would throw HIMSELF off a bloody cliff if it would save Sora, and take King Mickey along with him for good measure). So maybe the keychain means something else.
2.) Kairi’s ‘destiny’ is a solitary one
So why does Kairi have a complete paopu fruit all to herself, but the combined halves of Sora’s Nightmare’s End and Riku’s Mirage Split together make a whole paopu fruit?
We know that if two people share a paopu fruit, they will remain part of each other’s lives forever. In effect: their destiny’s become entwined. The Gayblade being formed of two halves to form a whole, and being a keyblade that both Sora and Riku share, is a clear illustration that Sora and Riku’s destiny’s are entwined. By sharing this keyblade with its paopu imagery, they essentially seem to be sharing the same destiny. But Kairi has her own fruit, and it isn’t being shared with anyone. This makes for a rather tragic reading of her character, but one that seems to make sense given the events of KHIII:
If the Gayblade paopu is symbolic of Riku and Sora sharing the same destiny, the paopu of Destiny’s Embrace is symbolic of Kairi’s destiny being a solitary one. Her destiny is one that she will have to face alone, with no one to share it with her.
I’m sure you are all aware of the star-crossed quality that characterises SoKai; Sora even explicitly states this at the end of KHIII when he vents his frustration of always being separated from Kairi just when it looks like they can finally be together. Then there’s the fact that Kairi seems to have been left on her own in some alternate Destiny Islands at the very end of KHIII, so this all points to her destiny being apart from those of her close friends. Her ‘place’ (Destiny’s Place) is separate from them. And this is rather apt, given what her name means: Kairi means ‘ocean’, of course, but it also means ‘separation’.
We can take ‘separation’ in many ways: she tried to separate Sora from Riku in KHI by suggesting they take the raft together, and she seemed to keep them separated again in KHIII with the now infamous paopu scene. But really, the separation is felt most keenly on her end. Sora and Riku were friends long before she washed up on Destiny Islands, and they’re always going off and having adventures without her and leaving her behind. In KHII she very fervently states her desire for the three of them to stay together from now on, and almost immediately after she is separated from them AGAIN. The Destiny Trio is an uneven trio in a lot of ways, and while I could also write about the ways Riku is excluded from it, Kairi is excluded from it just as much if not more so. And that is why a single paopu fruit just to herself is fitting: no one to share it with, a destiny that she will have to face by herself.
3.) Kairi is whole but Sora and Riku are incomplete
And this is the batshit crazy side of this epically long journey through my thoughts, but while I’m here I may as well put it down. What if Kairi, having a whole fruit, is symbolic of her having a full and complete destiny, being a full and complete person? What if the two halves of the Gayblade actually mean that apart, Sora and Riku are ‘incomplete’? Yes this is all cute and romantic in one sense, but what if they are literally incomplete? Admittedly this idea is fuelled purely by Yozora, who seems to be a combination of the two of them. But I don’t really want to get into what the fuck Yozora could possibly be (An ultimate fusion of them both? Their illicit lovechild? Some dude who just really loves cosplaying Riku but made it ‘edgy’?) and so I’ll just end this one right here. I don’t have much stock in this particular reading but eh, thought it worth shoving down anyways while I’m here.

Game of Thrones: Alderaan - The Castoffs
From a prompt by @sl-walker Ahsoka showing up on Alderaan as a survivor, meeting Maul and Obi-wan.
NOTE: There are some adjustments in relative ages here from canon and my ‘verse. Ahsoka is 14, while Croft and Dani are 25. Obi-wan is 30. This is canon to sl-walker’s verse only if she says it is. Maybe someone will continue it...hint, hint.
Maul spins as Obi-wan is about a step slow on the block with the composite staff. Maul hears the smack of his new wooden staff on the back of the Jedi’s calf. Kenobi goes down in a heap.
Maul twirls his gift from a member of the Corellian Security Service and holds it in the ready position under his arm. His eyes take in the sight of his opponent slumped on the ground, the borrowed staff across his knees.
Maul waits patiently for his erstwhile teacher and sparring partner to rise for another round. His eyes narrow as he realizes that Obi-wan cannot meet his eyes. Maul centers himself as he wonders if the remaining Council has decided that he is too dangerous to try and teach.
He decides to forge ahead. “Obi-wan,” he says, his voice dry even to his own ears, “you are usually more of a challenge.” He grins tightly. “A little bit more.”
Obi-wan starts, then has the grace to look sheepish. “I am sorry, Lord Maul,” he says formally. He manages to rise with only a slight hitch due to his screaming calf. “I am a bit distracted.”
Maul nods. “What is it? Anything that I can help with?”
Obi-wan quirks a smile. “I don’t know. Perhaps you can help me hide a body.”
Maul doesn’t smile, but allows a tiny hint of amusement in his voice. “I think that the area of the sproutlings of the Wood might be good. No one will be able to explore there for quite some time. How big is the body?”
The Jedi’s blue eyes widen for half a second, but his ginger mustache twitches slightly after that half-second. “About your size. Much more hair and much more Corellian snark.”
Maul takes a deep breath as he wonders whether he should be relieved or not that he is not the reason for Obi-wan’s distraction. Instead, he smiles slightly. “Ah. The Corellian that you brought back briefly that helped out in the wood. He didn’t seem to say much, snark or not.”
Obi-wan nods. “I know. He was...reserved. I only know him a bit, but Padawan Croft has a bit of a reputation for being somewhat stubborn; something his Master knew how to deal with, very effectively.”
“Yeah. She also knew how to talk to me without talking down to me.”
Maul looks up and Obi-wan turns at the quiet voice from the entry of the salle. Maul recognizes a bit of the same drawling inflection that sometimes marks Dani’s speech, particularly when she is angry. He watches as Obi-wan gathers himself. Maul allows him a moment as he turns his gaze full on to the new arrival.
His gaze is met with calm green eyes that examine him just as intently. Maul realizes that the Corellian has much less hair than he did the first time he had seen him. His dark and gold mixed hair and beard are neatly and closely trimmed. Croft is dressed in only the leggings and undertunic of a Jedi, in dark blue. A leather lightsaber belt with a row of sharp teeth decorates his hips. He sees Obi-wan’s eyes lock on the device on the opposite side from Croft’s lightsaber. A very large Corellian blaster.
“Forgive me, Padawan Croft, but I might have missed the memorandum. The one that told you could sever your Padawan braid and relax the dress code,” Obi-wan says, his own voice bereft of moisture.
Maul’s eyes widen as he notices this, as well, but doesn’t know the significance of it.
For the first time, there is a hint of a crooked grin over Croft’s features—just for an instant. “Didn’t think that I needed it anymore. Didn’t think I needed the trappings of childhood.”
Obi-wan digests this. His eyes harden. “That’s interesting. Especially since you seem to be doing a good job of acting like a child.”
Croft’s own eyes flash with anger. For a brief moment, Maul feels a slight tremble in the Force. He realizes that neither he nor Kenobi had sensed Croft’s arrival. He turns his head to the side as a much brighter light intrudes into his sense. He notices a smaller being standing behind Croft, as if trying to be as unobtrusive as possible.
He turns his concentration to the volley of words. “I knew that you had tremendous responsibilities, Master Kenobi,” Croft says. “I figured you had enough teaching responsibilities with your pet project.” At this, he looks pointedly at Maul.
Kenobi steps in front of Maul. “That is none of your business, Croft. Master Windu left it to me as to decide what to do with you; whether you could take the trials of Knighthood, or continue to train under me. You are making it very easy to choose.”
Croft is silent for a moment. “I don’t know if that is your decision any more, Obi-wan,” he says quietly, but with a definite edge. “I don’t know if I owe allegiance to the Jedi any more, or its little rules. I think that I may only owe anything to the Code; to live my life by it.”
“Taliesin,” Obi-wan says softly. “What do you think you will do? We need to stick together.”
Croft looks away. Maul is struck by the sadness that flows over his features. Sadness tempered with resolve. “I have heard that Master Ti might still be alive in the Cron Drift. Just rumors, but I think that I need to check them out.”
Kenobi’s voice is gentle. “Taliesin, I have heard so many rumors about Jedi out in the galaxy. We can’t go chasing after all of them.”
Croft’s anger flares, again for that brief second. Maul marvels at his shielding, if that is what it is. “I know ‘we’ can’t. ‘We’ aren’t. ‘I’ am,” he says, the sharp edge back to his voice.
Maul watches as he and Obi-wan stare at each other, both refusing to back down. Maul hears a word in a high, very clear voice.
“Bait.”
He sees a small orange hand touch Croft on his arm, as its owner steps around. A small Togruta, her Jedi robes appearing to be too large for her stands next to Croft. The lightsaber on her waist fits her, he notices. He watches as a mixture of fear and awe play over her features as she looks between Obi-wan and Taliesin. Maul notices another emotion flash as well. A smirk grows as her eyes lock with Croft’s. Understanding passes between them.
The understanding of survivors. His eyes lock on the headdress of sharp teeth that adorns her forehead. Teeth very similar to those on Croft’s gunbelt.
The young girl, who couldn’t be more than thirteen or fourteen, steps away from Croft. She stands straight; Maul realizes she is taller than he thought, but very skinny. He smiles as she bows to Kenobi.
“Master Obi-wan. I am Padawan Ahsoka Tano. I am at your disposal, but I do beg that you consider my clan-master’s ideas.”
Maul looks at Obi-wan. Being exposed to the Jedi for the time that he had, he had come to recognize some of his emotional cues. Maul sees amusement, mixed with sadness, playing over Obi-wan’s handsome features, before a warm smile joins them. Obi-wan bows in return.
“Hello, Padawan Tano. I wasn’t aware you had been chosen.”
Ahsoka looks down, her eyes closing. “Yes,” she says. “Master Plo had chosen me, just before...” She trails off. “He was my Finder,” she finally whispers.
Maul sees Obi-wan blink rapidly, as if something is in his eye. “I know, little one,” he says quietly. His face seems to brighten as he sees Croft move behind Tano and place his hands on her shoulders.
The young Corellian, who is maybe a half-decade younger than Obi-wan, looks down at Ahsoka with pride. “Master Obi-wan, I ask that you take Ahsoka as your Padawan.” He closes his eyes, clearly struggling with something. “I am not experienced enough to teach her. I can take care of myself, but she deserves someone who can teach her.” He grins.“She is stubborn, argumentative, a know-it-all who absolutely has to have the last word, but she is powerful in the Force. She will be a much better Jedi than I ever could be.”
Maul sees the powerful eyeroll from the future of the Jedi.
Maul realizes that tears are now flowing from the Corellian’s eyes. Ahsoka turns, protest on every centimeter of her face. Croft winks at her. She pulls him into a tight embrace.
Maul watches as Obi-wan takes several deep breaths. Maul knows that he struggles with his own path, much less the fate of other Jedi. He has sensed that Obi-wan is tired, that he has been lost since the Cataclysm.
“You’re right in some respects, Taliesin,” he says. “I don’t know if we have an Order any longer. I don’t think that I can make your decisions for you. And I think that you already have proven that you have been a good teacher for Ahsoka, even if you aren’t her Master.”
“I think that there is only one thing that I can actually do for you.” Maul’s eyes widen as Kenobi draws his saber and ignites it. Maul sees Ahsoka ignite hers as well.
Croft drops to his knees without a word.
“I guess since you cut your own damned braid off, this might go quicker, if less dramatically,” Obi -wan says as he walks slowly towards Croft.
He reaches Croft, who looks up expectantly, but without fear. Obi-wan swings his saber and gently mock-taps on either side of Croft’s head. “By the right of the Council, by the will of the Force, I dub you—“ He stops as Croft gestures.
“I was born Jame atin Blackthorn,” the Corellian says quietly.
Maul watches Obi-wan pause, then nod.
“I dub you, Jame Blackthorn, a Knight of the Jedi Order of the Galactic Republic.”
Blackthorn is barely able to stand before a small predator leaps into his arms and hugs him tightly.
Obi-wan watches with amusement. “I think that Ahsoka will have a large say in what form her training takes. She might be best served by being out in the galaxy with you, looking for other Jedi. The remaining healers say that both of you are cleared with the new Drall therapies—that you shouldn’t be affected by any more outbreaks.”
Maul watches as Obi-wan corrals the new knight over to the corner.
Ahsoka Tano’s overlarge blue eyes fall on Maul. She walks over and says, “Hi.”
He bows. “Hello. I am Maul.”
She returns his bow. “Tal says that Master Windu says that...”
“Ahsoka,” both Blackthorn and Kenobi shout, matching annoyance in their voices.
“I was just going to say, that he said that you were working with Master Obi-wan,” she says with an eyeroll and an imperious tone at her elders.
Maul releases his own breath. “That is right, Lady Tano,” he says.
She looks at him curiously. “I am not a Lady,” she says. “I am just a Padawan. A brand new one at that.”
“It is how we speak on my world, Padawan.”
Her eyes lock on his features. “Is Alderaan your world?”
His remaining heart clinches as he answers. “Yes. Yes it is.”
A feeling of warmth, other than for his world suddenly suffuses his entire being as a warm voice breaks in. “There is no one better to show you this beautiful world, Ahsoka,” the voice says.
Maul smiles as Dani Faygan stands in the doorway. She walks in. As she passes Blackthorn, she reaches up and brings the new knight’s head to her shoulder in a quick embrace.
She turns to Kenobi. “Sorry I missed the shindig, Master. But Draq’ Bel Iblis might have a different idea of how our world’s Covenant might be used.
Jedi and Noble alike gape at her direct pronouncement; at the unfamiliar term.
Jedi Padawan is less impressed as she rolls her eyes. “Great. He’ll have an even bigger head, now.”

Why I Ditched My Nikon Kit for Sony as a Wedding Photographer
Changing camera systems is not something to be taken lightly. As a die-hard Nikon fan since I first got into photography, I didn’t think I would ever consider switching away from them. And yet, here I am, sitting with no Nikon kit in sight having just shot my first wedding entirely on Sony kit and no regrets.
My entire career as a professional photographer has been forged with a Nikon. I knew my D750 inside out, knew how it would meter differently in different lights, when I had to adjust things, without even looking. It was comfortable to use and yet, as my way of working has changed, and my photography has grown, the camera hadn’t quite kept up.
What’s wrong with the D750
Well, nothing really. The D750 is a fantastic camera, and for the price it’s regularly available at (under a grand pre-owned), I still think it’s one of the best all-around DSLR cameras on the market for the money. Its dynamic range is incredible, the ISO performance is fantastic and it’s a monster when it comes to focus in low light situations.
And yet, as my shooting style has evolved certain aspects of it have frustrated me at times. The buffer is pretty dire, even with fast cards in it, shooting RAW to both cards the camera chokes after 10 shots. Now for weddings, this doesn’t matter for 90% of the day, but the 10% it does matter, it started to irk me.
Similarly, the max shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second. Not a problem, unless, like me, you like to shoot wide open. My most used aperture is f/2 and after this blazing hot summer we’ve had, I was having to push the aperture higher than I’d have liked to, in order to stop highlights being blown.
Shooting in Liveview on the D750 is another letdown — the AF is awful and slow, it hunts back and forth. It’s fine if you have the time to wait, but if you’re trying to catch a moment, you’ve got no chance.
Why not the D850?
So surely my obvious choice is to upgrade to the D850 right? Bigger buffer, using even faster cards, better Liveview, touch screen focus etc. That fixes all of my concerns right?
Well yes and no. It’s a bigger camera, physically, plus I don’t need 42 megapixels for a wedding. XQD cards are expensive, with not even the sole-manufacturer of them (Sony) adopting them. Making it an expensive upgrade path, especially as I like to shoot on two identical cameras.
Sure I’d get some of the benefits that I wanted, but it wouldn’t solve all of my issues. Liveview is better than the D750, but it’s nothing special.
Mirrorless is where all cameras will end up
I did a lot of research before I made the decision to change, I tried friends cameras, I checked all the boring things like ISO performance against my Nikons and most of all, I looked into the AF accuracy and speed, because that’s what’s key as a documentary wedding photographer, capturing moments the instant they happen!
Where mirrorless used to lag behind, it’s now not the case, with AF points covering the entire frame, dual phase and contrast detect pixels making Autofocus lightning fast and the addition of Eye-AF on the Sony’s is a game changer for me. It sounds so simple, it detects the closest eye to your focus point and tracks it. But just how accurate this is and how well it tracks around the frame has to be seen to be believed.
And let’s face it, the whole idea of a mirror having to physically move to take a photo, is just, well, behind the times in this digital age.
WYSIWYG shooting, What You See Is What You Get, is where the future is and is what makes mirrorless systems a pleasure to use. No more checking to see if any highlights are blown, you know whether they are or not *before* you hit the shutter button. Real-time exposure preview through both the viewfinder and the rear screen mean no more chimping, you know what you’ve got straight away.
A week of using the Sony a7 III and the DSLR seems dated.
So how is it vs the D750?
The D750 is a fantastic camera, and for the price it can be picked up for these days, I still have the opinion that it’s one of the best buys for an all-around DSLR in most parts of its performance.
And of course, it’s an absolute monster when it comes to low light performance. And that’s where the Sony misses in one way and wins big in the other.
It loses on low light AF. It’s just not as good as the D750 at locking focus when it gets dark, period. So you might want to think about an AF assist beam, a low power video light, or pre-focussing (which is what I do for dancing shots anyway).
But when it comes to ISO performance, the Sony smashes even the mighty Nikon. With native ISO going all the way up to 51200 (which is a horrible horrible mess, but still) at any ISO that you’re likely to use, the Sony wins. Sony has even managed to get even more dynamic range out of the A7 III than the D750, which was already an impressive camera in that regards.
The D750s ultra-deep grip is better in the hand, admittedly, or at least when holding it to your face, but with me not using the viewfinder, I find the Sony sits really nicely in my hand. Although a little front-heavy with fast Sony glass attached.
There’s no weight saving once the lenses are attached, so if you think a plus of switching to mirrorless is a reduction in weight, think again! Similarly, if your work is predominantly studio based and you use flash all of the time, you’re not going to get many of the advantages of that a mirrorless system would give you. They all vanish when you introduce flash and you’re metering for exposure anyway.
But when you’re working in natural light, zebra lines highlighting the parts of the image that will have blown, or focus peaking helping you manually focus combined with being able to see the exposure before you take the shot, are simply fantastic.
Shot on the Sony a7 III
What it’s like to use
The body is smaller, the grip is quite deep though and it feels comfortable in the hand. If you don’t use fast lenses, then you may get some decent weight saving out of the switch. But connecting up a 35mm f/1.4 Distagon or 85mm f/1.4 G Master is definitely not a light combination. Maybe a hundred grams lighter than my equivalent set up on the D750.
It feels nice in the hand though, the lens sits nicely on my hand, I think a bit of weight helps stabilize the camera a little. But if you’re thinking about switching just to save weight, and you’re planning on adding a fast aperture lens. Stop, step back, and think again. It won’t be lighter!
Shot on the Sony a7 III
The AF is incredibly fast, the D750 was no slouch, but the Sony impresses me again and again. Eye AF which I thought was going to be a bit of a gimmick. Is quite simply, incredible, it’s fast, accurate and tack sharp.
Full silent mode is great if a little weird to begin with, and you have to understand the technical limitations. In certain artificial lighting, it will create banding across the image. You might be able to avoid it by shooting in multiples of 1/50th (1/60th in the USA) due to the frequency lights flicker. But if you notice it, you’re better off disabling silent mode under those lighting conditions. Similarly, it can’t be used for particularly fast moving subjects, or they will appear to stretch across the screen. This isn’t an issue with the Sony, it’s just a technical limitation of how electronic shutters work vs mechanical shutters. So you have to learn when you can use silent, and when you can’t.
Shot on the Sony a7 III
I’m the first to admit, I’m not a fan of Electronic View Finders. The one on the A7 III is good, the EVF in both the A7R III and A9 is better. But I still don’t really like them. Don’t ask me why, I just don’t, I think it’s to do with my eye being so close to a screen, I just don’t like it. Whereas others rave about it. So it’s definitely down to personal tastes.
So is it a problem? No, because that’s the other thing with mirrorless that has changed how I shoot… I don’t use the viewfinder. Not only does it eat up batteries faster (due to internal heat generation), but also, I just find shooting in LiveView better. It’s freeing, it allows me to get the camera into angles I’d otherwise struggle, creating new creative opportunities. There’s a mode for bright sunlight, which works great, probably increases battery drain a bit, so I turn it off when not needed.
And the big thing for me, as a social photographer. I’m not hiding my face behind a camera, I’m able to engage with my clients while shooting. Making them feel more comfortable, which creates better connections, which makes for better photos. And that is what we all want.
Shot on the Sony a7 III
How was it at the wedding?
So I switched kit a week before a wedding, and I will admit, on the run up to it. I was thinking “Is this sensible? Am I going to be used to using these by Saturday? Will I deliver the same quality that my clients expect?”.
Any worries were completely unfounded, once set up how I wanted them to be, they’re a dream to use. So easy! Focus points covering the whole screen and being able to tap the screen to select them is a dream, the AF was quick and accurate all day long, it even surpassed my expectations late on for the dancing.
The silent shutter meant I could shoot even more discretely for most of the day (I had to turn it off in the barn to avoid banding) and the expanded buffer vs my D750 meant I never had to worry about the camera choking. Combined with the fact that I could see the exposure before pressing the button it was a dream.
Shot on the Sony a7 III
Let’s put this into perspective…
I’d had the cameras for a week. And this was the most confident I’d ever felt shooting a wedding.
Shot on the Sony a7 III
So you’d recommend I switch to Sony then?
No. Well, maybe.
It depends, doesn’t it? If you shoot predominantly studio work, then you lose some of the benefits straight away. No WYSIWYG for you, obviously. And you don’t need it. Super fast AF, well, you don’t need that either for the most part as you know the distance, you can prefocus.
Social and lifestyle photography? Maybe. I’m not going to say Yes, because it’s a very personal decision and what feels right for me might not feel right for you. But I think it’s worth checking them out certainly.
Shot on the Sony a7 III
Some of the more dreamy portrait work? Maybe not… The A7 III has a very weak low-pass optical filter (or Anti-aliasing filter). A low-pass filter softens the image, mainly to prevent moiré but also because sometimes a slightly softer image is just more pleasing to the eye. As it is the A7 III delivers incredibly sharp images and for some styles of photography, that might actually be too sharp.
Ultimately, it’s not a camera for everyone. Kit doesn’t make you a better photographer, or somehow able to better frame an image in your head. But for me, it’s made it easier to translate the image in my head, into an image to deliver to a client.
Shot on the Sony a7 III
Specific advantages of the Sony
Bullet points time!
Silent shooting – brilliant, just brilliant, especially for couples shoots when you’re potentially invading their personal space a little. It’s a bit less intrusive without a rapid clicking of a shutter!
A HUGE buffer – I get 50 images in a row at 10fps before the camera even starts to choke!
Real-time exposure preview with zebra stripes on the blown highlights – nail that exposure every time!
Eye-Af (this is seriously insane)
Focus points covering the whole viewfinder
Focus Peaking so manual focus is easy
Brilliant battery life – I shot the whole wedding with 1 battery in each camera!
