Hey everyone, how are ya? It’s been a pretty relaxing day today. I watched Avatar, read, took photos, now I’m going to BUJO a bit. Hullo. So I might need to be stirred away from discount bookstores because I have bought quite a lot of books recently... Including today with these 4 *sigh* My wallet might be somewhat neutral about it because the books are cheap, but the limited shelf space in my house is crying! The first thing that struck me when I began the Queens of Renthia series was the delightful--and blessedly familiar--Hogwarts-esque atmosphere of the Northeast Academy and the relationship amongst the candidates. It was that genuine feel of belonging that just really touched my soul. I really loved the aesthetic of Aratay in particular—a collection of villages nestled in the canopy of an ancient forest, complete with mystical spirits who want nothing more than to murder, but are fascinating nonetheless. It became very apparent as I read that Durst is extremely well-read--in the fantasy genre especially--and it is glaringly clear that her knowledge lends itself so well to this story. I think that is a prime reason I enjoyed these books so very much: she compounds upon quintessential fantasy elements without being derivative. The intricate world building is reminiscent of my other favorites: Tolkien and Lewis and Martin.
