I’ve been obsessed with the ♠️ Pirate Sabo AU by @otaku553 Their artwork is total inspiration fodder. I DROOL over their line quality, story telling, and how they can implement so much symbolism with the colors alone. (So I wanted to try my hand at drawing him too 😊)
I’ve been wanting to draw Tage for weeks now; his design is just SO solid (have I mentioned I love men with long hair?). Imagine my surprise when I found this in my inbox today:
Tumblr media
So obviously it was finally time to draw Tage. Actual squee. Thank you for creating such beautiful comics! I hope you enjoy being mutuals with me ☺️🩵

Rereading the manga, I think my favorite thing ever is that Edward looks like he’s a feral animal Mustang just kinda found out back one day. He looks like if he bites you you’re going to get a disease, and he looks like he absolutely would bite a person. They really toned down how feral he is in Brotherhood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brotherhood Ed is like some poor cat you found in the alley, Manga Ed is the rabid raccoon you’ve been trying to pull put of your trash since 2013 that Will Not Leave
Like look at him and tell me he doesn’t remind you of some raccoon

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 15
FalseSymmetry x Fullmetal Alchemist
Tumblr media
For False I chose Fullmetal Alchemist!
False has a steampunk aesthetic and so does Fullmetal Alchemist, so I thought she would look very cool in this style. Plus that means I can give her extra buckles and a cool sword. Can she also do alchemy? Not sure! You let me know :)
(Fundraiser for Gamers Outreach!)
Fullmetal Alchemist is an anime about a pair of brothers who try to bring their mother back to life using forbidden alchemy. The transmutation fails and the older brother, Edward, loses his arm and leg, and the younger brother, Alphonse, loses his entire body and must have his soul bound to a suit of armor in order to survive.
After the accident, the brothers are driven to master alchemy and find the Philosophers Stone, a mythical alchemical device, to undo the damage that has been done. The story follows the brothers as they seek the Stone and navigate the tense political environment of their world while uncovering government conspiracies and the secrets of alchemy.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a very cool show. Its plot is genuinely really interesting and the characters are complex and compelling. I recommend it if you haven't seen it!
Style References:
Tumblr media
Edward Elric, the protagonist of Fullmetal Alchemist. Rough that his arm got ripped off but it is pretty cool that his metal one has a sword option.
Tumblr media
I took a lot of direction from Lieutenant Hawkeye's design for False's face, especially her eyes

[Spoilers for FMAB] I think one of my favorite things about FMA is the fact that Maes Hughes intentionally acts like an idiot in order to get people to lower their expectations of his capability. Hughes is one of the most intelligent characters in the series, he’s very good at noticing all the small details. He figured out a piece of information by episode ten that could have helped defeat the homunculi much quicker, and he was killed for it. He was able to piece together everything and figure out the transmutation circle, even though it was alchemy, which he doesn’t really understand at all.
He does love his wife and daughter more than anything in the world, but he’s completely aware of the fact that everyone thinks he’s just an idiot obsessed with his family and he uses it to his advantage.

Here’s my ideas for a reboot of Fullmetal Alchemist:
In this version of the story both Father and Dante are antagonists.
There are two types of Homunculi: Those created with Philosopher’s Stones and those made through attempting Human Transmutation.
Hohenheim granted Dante immortality via the implantation of a Philosopher’s Stone.
The events of Brotherhood’s first episode remain intact.
Führer King Bradley has a regeneration ability like the other Homunculi but doesn’t prefer to show it off.
A combination of the manga, first anime and Brotherhood regarding Ed’s entrance as a state alchemist.
Everything proceeds according to the manga and Brotherhood regarding the beginning of the Elrics’ time in the military.
The introduction of the Homunculi begins.
Dante is replaced as a villain by Father after her defeat.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos and any other material following the manga and Brotherhood remains canon.
Homunculi:
Father — Dwarf in the Flask
Pride — Selim Bradley
Wrath — Führer King Bradley
Envy — Hohenheim & Dante’s son
Greed — Created by Father
Lust — Scar’s brother’s lover
Gluttony — Created by Father
Sloth — Created by Father
Torpor — Trisha Elric
Vengeance — Izumi Curtis’s son
Mannequin Soldiers — Sacrifices
Battles (New, Reimagined & Both):
Elric Brothers, Izumi Curtis, Scar, Mei Chang & Van Hohenheim VS. Dante
Curtis Family, Armstrong Siblings & Central Troops VS. Mannequin Soldiers & Sloth
Everyone VS. Father
Greed, Greed’s Chimera Gang & Vengeance VS. Wrath
Elric Brothers & Van Hohenheim VS. Torpor
Izumi Curtis & Vengeance VS. Frank Archer
Elric Brothers, Ling Yao, Greed, Fu, Lan Fan, Van Hohenheim & Torpor VS. Pride & Gluttony
Elric Brothers & Roy Mustang VS. Wrath
Scar & Lust VS. Wrath

Hoenheim is one of my favorite characters in the OG FMA manga and Brotherhood. He made me love the sad immortal that hates themself trope, and in general I find the combination of failed father figure, gentle kind person, and the violence he accidently did to his people make for a dynamic character.
But I do 100% think FMA made the other characters far too quick to forgive Hoenheim for leaving the boys.
In the manga, it was directly said that Hoenheim wrote back home but in the anime you get NOTHING. Either way, the man left for a decade, during the most important period of his children's lives as children... because he felt like a monster. Not because he was actually doing things to his kids, but HE wanted to live like a human.
It's shitty. It's awful. One of the people that Ed and Al were supposed to rely on most left because he couldn't get over his own misery. Instead of waiting even a few years to make sure they could even take care of themselves better before leaving, he left before they could even really remember him at all.
I say this not because I don't think it was a good character decision. In fact I think it's tragic in a way that the series needs. The lack of clear lines between monsters and people, where one of Hoenheim's worst decisions is leaving his wife and kids, something that any person can do.
Hoenheim's real flaw when it comes to his family is not valuing that people want him to be there.
Which makes his final offer to Ed to sacrifice himself take on a different light.
In canon, the manga/anime make it clear that Ed calling Hoenheim a shitty father was meant to be as much Ed chastising Hoenheim for not understanding they won't use philosopher stones as it is an acknowledge that Ed accepts him as his father.
But to me, it shows that Hoenheim still hasn't learned why leaving was such an awful blow to the family. Yes, Trisha died because he wasn't there but even if he came back ten years later, did he still expect it to be from a loving family? Did Hoenheim expect the world to stand still while he left?
Hoenheim is still sacrificing himself after all this damn time. He still doesn't see that being there for his kids could invaluable. Maybe they grew up without him, and hell, maybe he doesn't deserve a second chance after so long, but for the boys, making sure you live to the next day is their entire philosophy. And Hoenheim, is willing to give that next day up.
In context, he's giving himself up for his boys after all this time of putting his own feelings first, but he would still be gone. What's worse, in Ed's perspective it's an impossible choice. If Ed couldn't have thought of another way to get Al back, Hoenheim basically offered Ed a chance to kill him in exchange for his brother.
You know. Killing. The one thing that Ed will not fucking do.
Hoenheim doesn't understand Ed. He also even after all this time doesn't get that living for them and to move forward would be the best thing he could do.
So yeah. I adore Hoenheim but the manga/anime kinda does a clumsy job with him. It does such a good job of setting Hoenheim up as looming negative premise in the beginning and then the story overcorrects in trying to make you like him that it forgets that, yeah, leaving your wife and kids for a decade is kinda bad actually!!!
It doesn't help that no one else is angry at Hoenheim. Izumi knew the boys as small children, presumably orphans and yet greets Hoenheim warmly. In the manga the people of Risembol are baffled on his arrival but otherwise move on. Pinako WHO BASICALLY HELPED RAISED THEM is just sorta neutral towards him. Even Al isn't angry. He just wants his dad back which is fine, but it leaves Ed's anger as an outlier, like it's childish of him not to understand.
By the time of his death, Hoenheim doesn't really learn anything. He's forgiven because he really was a good dude and he felt really bad about leaving for a decade so he can totally be forgiven by everyone right?
Right.
So yeah. Hoenheim? Great character, but awful dad which is part of why he's a good character but the story really pulls its punches about him.

Am I the only one who thinks Superheroes shows and anime switched places with each other over the decades when it comes to being faithful to the source material?
Like in the 90′s & 00′s Superheroes shows were heavily inspired by their comics-counterparts and sometimes would even adapt entire storylines from the comics, while a lot of the popular anime in the 90′s/00′s will straight up diverge from the manga to the point where it becomes an entirely different show with different characters from the source material.
Then in the year 2010 (where FMA:B & YJ were airing) everything changed, now anime started adapting manga thoroughly in a 1:1 manners, while animated (and live-action) Superhero shows have almost nothing in common with the comics.

hello everyone. fma:b is a very good show but i wish that it had gotten more granular with all the concepts it presents vaguely which is HARD TO DO and MAY DEFEAT THE POINT of an underlying premise of the show (that truth is elusive and Absolute Truth is impossible or perhaps even dangerous to grasp) BUT there are philosophical realms the brothers and therefore the show never dive into. which is weird but also not. they are early 20th century white boys. why would they examine gender. they only barely examine race, and hand-wave it as irrelevant, because it is so much smaller than what they are actually trying to understand -- the nature of the existence from atom to universe (god?). but they fail to understand so many things that characters like riza and hawkeye and others of their cadre do.
because they are so caught up in what is, to their view, beyond politics, they do not bother with politics beyond how it serves or hinders them. to their own eyes, they don't have a political history. this perception is insane not to challenge by the end of the show, as we find out that their own father is immortal by means of in-body philosopher's stone, spread alchemy to the west and east as the sole survivor of a genocide enacted by a magical being, and lived as a slave with no rights before all of this. not to mention that he learned all of that as a result of this magical being.
so, their political reality and their scientific/magical reality are enmeshed. they share blood with the homunculi. they are descendants of a people nearly entirely wiped out in a quest for power, just as the ishvalans were. and that blood, this power that their father has and never asked for, is used by the homunculi and their father, to do the same thing to an entire country. a country that was built for this, from its political and governmental structure to its geography. the final arc doesn't seem to realise that what its doing is showing that there is no true separation between the political and the magical. it's all about the same thing: power.
in order to truly bring this to a satisfying conclusion, i think this show needed to be even braver than it had been. and also i think that roy mustang should've done All That and then been executed as a war criminal.

I am obsessed with the way Mustang just took over the role of Ed and Al’s dad. He took one look at those boys and went “oops guess im a father now” whether he was aware of it or not.
Tumblr media
“It’s been awhile since we saw each other… why don’t we have a cup of tea?”
HE MISSES THEM AND WANTS TO HAVE TEA WITH EDWARD TO TALK ABOUT THINGS. THIS MAN IS LITERALLY A FATHER.
Tumblr media
AND THE WAY HE JUST?? SETS UP MEETINGS WITH PEOPLE TO HELP ED??? (Yes, even though Tucker is a horrible person, he potentially had a lot of information that could’ve been very useful to Edward. And Mustang wasted absolutely no time in helping him.)
Tumblr media
AND THE WAY HE SENDS HAVOC TO GO PICK THEM UP. HE LITERALLY PULLED THE “Sorry I’m busy and I can’t pick up my kids can you go get them for me”

It’s funny. Typically I don’t like ships all that much.
AND THEN THERES ROYAI
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
COMPLETELY unserious one moment and the next theyre a badass couple like HELLO? Roy being an absolute idiot sometimes with Riza wanting to and sometimes does smacking him, then like next thing you know they are fighting back to back against an army or he burns a huge alchemy symbol off her back to free her because that’s the level of trust they have in each other or how he literally talks to her on the phone is HILARIOUS. Also yes Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is my ABSOLUTE favorite anime and I recently got my hands on the manga and I literally have the entire series on dvd, the movie and the manga 1-3! Been a super long running special interest of mine.
Like most ships in anime are either weird as hell cringe as hell illegal as hell or make you want to bash your head against a wall but this one is pretty entertaining to deal with.
Yeah I know it’s cringe to make a whole post about some stupid ship I like but I like yapping and hope people see this who like the same show I do tbh if you do PLEASE moot me immediately
