This was created for the Italian Pizzeria and Focacceria La Marinara in Grand Baie (Mauritius).

You know! 

The best place to tell scary stories is in front of a bonfire in the middle of the night!

La Marinara abolishes pineapple as an ingredient for pizza, making it seem like something spooky (even for ghosts).

The owner does not hide his opposition to the topic and this is another way of stating it.

The Facebook post sayed more or less like this:

All meat tastes like the work it did. It's why kidneys pong of urine—they make it. It's why brains melt like meat jelly—their delivery system is mostly fat. And it's why spleen crumbles in your mouth like a coarse medieval blood sausage. In a sense, that's exactly what it is. The spleen is a deep purple bruise caged by the ribs. It deals in blood—sorting, holding, moving—its soft red pulp held by an elastic casing. Like a lot of offal, mass amounts of spleen disappear into sausages and pet food, but unlike say, sweetbreads or liver, spleen is rarely on the menu.

My friend's father, Mr. Leonardi, is Sicilian and grew up in Brooklyn. He once drove two hours with a hankering for a vastedda, a Sicilian spleen sandwich. Though he lives in Riverdale, every now and then he visits Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens to meet his brother for lunch at Ferdinando's Focacceria, a restaurant whose cow spleen sandwiches have been meticulously documented by offal enthusiasts for the last decade. The restaurant slices it raw, simmers it in lard, and tucks it into a soft sesame bun under a scoop of ricotta.

Recently, I decided to ask if it tastes good.

"It tastes just like what they used to eat when they were boys," Mrs. Leonardi says. Meaning, I think, that when you're 80 and you eat the thing you ate as a boy, it's always good. Or, just as likely, that it can never be good.

The wiry Italian at the counter asks if I've had the vastedda before and I shake my head. I had spleen once, but it was at 9 o' clock in the morning after doing shots with Fergus Henderson. That morning, I could have enjoyed the braised tongue of my own shoe.

"You like chicken liver?" the guy asks. "If you like chicken liver, maybe you'll like this, I don't know."

We have to compare things to other things to describe them, but spleen has very little in common with chicken liver. And the fat French blood sausage I had in mind before is relatively dainty. Spleen tastes like the boiled, grizzly flotsam of a prehistoric monster. Like a fictional creature butchered and left to rot in an ogre's cellar. After a few bites I lift the bun to peek and the sandwich yawns an ancient, meaty stink. The crumbly slices have pieces of chew (artery, membrane, anonymous gristle). Comparing things is tricky: spleen is more like meat than most offal I've had, but less like it too.

Verdict: the sandwich at Ferdinando's is the size of a fist, incidentally, the size of your own spleen, and after eating it you will feel full, which is of course the purpose of a sandwich. It also tastes awful. (Hey, if you want something that tastes good, try what Mrs. Leonardi has for lunch, the five-dollar pannelle sandwich, a squishy bun stuffed with deep fried squares of chickpea batter and ricotta. It's lovely.)

Like so many culinary relics, pleasure is not its purpose. Vastare, the Latin from which the street snack gets its name, means to lay waste. It suggests an act of devastation. And truly, if the universe were running too smoothly for your liking and you wanted to momentarily obliterate yourself with a sandwich, you could do no better than a vastedda. The spleen inside tastes like the work it did. It leaves the rank taste of blood in your mouth, confirms that you're alive, reminds you that you're meat.

Overland, un’installazione site-specific di Tommaso Chiappa dedicata al viaggio e alla scoperta

Palermo - L'arte dove meno te l'aspetti. Si intitola "Overland" l'installazione site-specific dell'artista Tommaso Chiappa, allestita nei locali dello studio dentistico Biodent srl del dott. Angelo Inzerillo in via Puccini 70, che sarà inaugurata sabato 24 giugno alle ore 17.

Negli ultimi anni l'artista palermitano si è distinto per aver portato la pittura fuori dai tradizionali contesti, nei luoghi di lavoro, fabbriche, business center, studi legali e sedi di ordini professionali, alberghi e ristoranti, cliniche e ospedali in tutta Italia. Con gli obiettivi di ampliare l'accessibilità e la fruizione delle opere a un pubblico più vario, connettere l'arte alla vita quotidiana delle persone, stimolare il dialogo tra l'arte e la società, impreziosire gli ambienti di lavoro con un tocco di creatività, arricchire l'esperienza sociale e migliorare la qualità del tempo trascorso in quei luoghi.

Overland propone un percorso di opere pittoriche inedite, ispirate al tema del viaggio e della scoperta, che si inseriscono nello studio dentistico dialogando con lo spazio circostante, dalla reception alla sala di attesa, dal corridoio, fino alle sale operatorie e agli altri ambienti di lavoro.

Overland è un viaggio avventuroso per le strade del mondo. Un'esplorazione attraverso luoghi cari all'artista - da Barcellona a New York, da Palermo a Milano – popolati da folle multicolore che riflettono il continuo cambiamento ed esprimono la dimensione sempre più multiculturale e multietnica delle nostre società. L'artista nelle sue opere racconta il rapporto quotidiano uomo-ambiente urbano e uomo-natura. Il luogo non è solo lo spazio che ci circonda ma è anche emozione, ricordo e memoria, scambio e interazione. L'installazione, pensata e creata negli ultimi anni, ha fatto i conti con la pandemia e con la guerra, ma anche con l'idea di rappresentare una società che prova ad andare avanti. Al tema della Natura Chiappa dedica la raffigurazione di un ficus monocromatico e di alcuni suggestivi paesaggi marini.

L'artista propone opere ad olio su tela con una pittura liquida, attenta al particolare e alla qualità della luce. Ultimamente Chiappa, che in precedenza ha lavorato con la monocromia, utilizza i colori puri, con sfumature nette e i contrasti forti con il bianco di titanio. Il bianco rappresenta l'assenza di colori ma al tempo stesso la sublimazione metafisica nella luce che avvolge la realtà.

Tommaso Chiappa (Palermo, 1983) si è formato artisticamente a Milano, compiendo i suoi studi all'Accademia di Brera e legando il proprio nome alla Galleria di Luciano Inga- Pin con alcune mostre che lo hanno fatto conoscere a un più vasto pubblico. Ha partecipato a numerose personali e collettive in Italia e all'estero. Tra gli altri, la Clio Art Fair di New York (2017). Al suo percorso artistico la critica e storica dell'arte Vera Agosti ha dedicato il libro "Origine di Tommaso Chiappa (Prearo Editore). L'artista predilige per le mostre contesti insoliti e luoghi di lavoro, come fabbriche (Electrolux, Solaro), studi legali (La Scala, Milano; ospedali (IRCCS Maugeri, Pavia), sedi di ordini professionali (Villa Magnisi sede Ordine dei Medici), alberghi e ristoranti (Hotel Excelsior Hilton, Palermo; Antica Focacceria San Francesco, Milano e Palermo). Di recente ha curato la direzione artistica del progetto espositivo Genio italiano al Museo Onda Rossa di Caronno Pertusella (VA) dedicato a Leonardo da Vinci. Sempre nel 2020 ha ideato e curato l'installazione Restart city presso la sede di Ucimu – sistemi per produrre, Associazione Costruttori Italiani Macchine Utensili, Robot e Automazione – a Cinisello Balsamo (MI). Ha realizzato progetti di riqualificazione urbana a Bagheria (facciata dell'istituto professionale D'Acquisto, "Umano colors street", 2018 – facciata laterale "People and Peace" 2022), Termini Imerese (zona adiacente al Liceo artistico "Ugdulena" e murales "Energy Street Social" all'esterno e all'interno dell'azienda Genovese nella zona industriale, 2019) e Palermo (parcheggio sopraelevato "Multicultural-educarnival" del Centro Commerciale La Torre, 2020 e nello stesso parcheggio" Resilienza" 2022; People Air Basket riqualificazione facciata interna Scuola Elementare Lambruschini 2022).

Genova, sferra un pugno ad un poliziotto fuori servizio. Entra in una focacceria di Corso Sardegna a Genova e inizia ad importunare gli avventori chiedendo insistentemente una sigaretta. Nel locale ci sono anche 4 agenti di Polizia fuori servizio. Ad uno di loro l’uomo si rivolge in modo molto aggressivo, fino ad arrivare ad un vero e proprio “faccia a faccia”. I poliziotti si qualificano mostrando il tesserino e lo invitano ad allontanarsi perché sta generando preoccupazione e disagio tra i clienti.  Il 40enne esce dal locale, ma pochi minuti dopo rientra e accusa gli agenti di averlo fatto litigare con la fidanzata. Li insulta, fino a minacciarli di morte. Non contento, senza alcun motivo, sferra un pugno al volto ad uno di essi ferendolo al labbro. You’ll be here for the Grand Prix, that’s great! And it takes care of the main esc site since you’ll already be at the Palavela 😉 It’s in the park surrounded by a residential quarter and lots of hospitals, the only interesting thing relatively close by will be The Lingotto complex (there’s a mall in the old factory, lots of places to eat at odd ours, the Pinacoteca Agnelli, The Bubble on the roof, a metro station, Eataly and the Green Pea) and the National Car Museum.

I’d maybe skip La Reggia di Venaria since it’s outside the city and you have to be at the Palavela in late afternoon, it could all get a bit rushed. If you just want to explore and relax pretty much everything I suggested in the previous ask is clustered in the city center and easily reachable on foot moving between Porta Nuova (the central station and a major transports hub) Piazza Vittorio (the cinema museum is less than 5 minutes away and there’s lots of places to eat around the Mole) Piazza Castello and in the Quadrilatero Romano.

For Christmas atmosphere my first suggestion normally would be looking up a map or a tour of Luci D’Artista -a series of contemporary art does Christmas lights installations sprinkled around the city (they should go on as usual this year but who knows what will happen with energy prices skyrocketing) and there’s often a small Christmas Market in Piazza Castello. There’s also a huge tourism info point on piazza Castello with free flyers, maps and personnel that mostly knows what they’re doing and a good take away pizza place at the corner with via garibaldi, Focacceria Ligure. I’d also skip Via Garibaldi itself and explore the smaller streets around it towards the Old Citadel (the aforementioned Quadrilatero Romano) lots of hole in the wall places to eat, quirky shops and smaller museums. Two of my favorite spots are Piazza Carignano (love Palazzo Carignano’s architecture, there’s Pepino for gelato and Farmacia del Cambio for pastries (especially the mini bunets) and something warm to drink. Both have outside seating with heating in winter and my favorite bookshop, Libreria Luxemburg, is right there) and Piazza del Conservatorio (mostly because it’s full of benches to rest and if you’re lucky you get to hear the music students rehearsing as a soundtrack).

Going down from Porta Nuova towards the river you’ll find S. Salvario - the area is a bit rougher but it’s a lively quarter traditionally inhabited by students and immigrants: lots of interesting places to eat relatively cheaply, artisanal shops and a daily market in Piazza Madama.

The Valentino Park itself is huge but the nicest spots for a stroll are around Corso Marconi: there’s the (fake 😆) medieval village, the botanical garden and the Chateau that now houses the faculty of Architecture.

Eu sou apaixonada por cebola e quando ela aparece caramelizada eu não resisto! Por isso as minhas escolhas na última visita à @focacceriadicostanzo foram "Cibele" (cebola roxa caramelizada, abóbora e gorgonzola) e "Renata" (cebola roxa caramelizada e linguiça)!
