The Bikes And Products That Dominated The Absa Cape Epic
The 2019 Absa Cape Epic was one for the record books. It featured more metres of climbing per kilometre than any previous edition. Off the bike it broke its own viewership records with mountain biking fans tuning in from around the globe to view the live broadcast over 1 500 00 times during the eight days of racing. Those are just the headline grabbing statistics however, join us for a deep dive into some of the race’s most interesting numerical facts.
Of the 1 380 riders who rolled off the start line at the University of Cape Town, 1 273 earned a finisher’s medal at Val de Vie Estate. That is a completion rate of 92%. The historical average is 86% (2004 – 2018), which indicates that despite the climbing heavy route the general level of preparation was higher than ever. In fact, 2019’s finisher percentage was up to a new highest level, by one percentage point from 2018. Despite that, the average speed of the final finishers – Daniel Scheniuk and Ron Dagan, of Lazy Tsfonim – was the slowest at 11 kilometres per hour since average speed records were first kept in 2014; but 11 kilometres per hour, which equated to a total of 57:37.27,4 hours of riding, was enough to claim a spot in the Book of Legend for the team that travelled from Israel.
Tumblr media
The superb finishing rate for this year’s race also meant that the Amabubesi Finisher Club, of riders who have completed three or more Absa Cape Epics, swelled by 164. The total number now stands at 1 518. In terms of nations represented, locals still dominated the start and finish lines, with South Africa being the most represented nation at the race. The next best represented nation was that of José Antonio Hermida. Hermida and his fellow Spanish riders made up 10% of the field. The traditional mountain biking powerhouse nation of Switzerland was the third, boasting 6% of the total rider helmet count.
Cycling has long been the scene of a technological arms race. Mountain biking and the Absa Cape Epic are not exempt from that trend. 57% of the field purchased new bikes for the challenges of the Untamed African MTB Race and 12% of the field listed their bikes at being valued between R100 000 – R110 000! Unsurprisingly the number of riders participating on full suspension bikes grew from 94% to 96% in 2019.
Tumblr media
SRAM dominated the drivetrain count, claiming a sizeable majority by powering 76% of the bikes in the race. The question of riding single, double or triple chainrings had a very clear winner. Single chainring come out on top with 88% of riders opting for a maximum of 12 gears to get them through the 624km and 16 650m of vertical ascent. To put it into perspective, we could quite literally count the amount of triple chainrings on two hands (8).
As any rider will attest, a good pair of sunglasses goes a lot further than just being functional. Oakley was the eyewear brand of choice, ensuring clarity of vision (and style points) for 58% of eyes which were staring out at the trails of the Western Cape.
Tumblr media
The most fiercely contested battle however was that of the bike manufacturers. For the third year in a row Specialized topped the charts. The Big Red S proved the choice for almost one third of riders in the field. SCOTT claimed second place and Cannondale third. Interestingly, these three brands also had the most amount of category and special jersey wins between them.
Oliver Munnik and his fellow 11% of luddites, who still choose to shun heart rate monitors and GPS bike computers were very much in the minority this year. 89% of the field trained for the Absa Cape Epic using both a heart rate monitor and a GPS head unit. Power meters were less widely adopted though, with 54% of the riders basing their training on power data and 2019 was the first year that power meters have crossed the 50% mark.
Tumblr media
Seeing the data as provided by riders in our pre and post-event surveys is always an incredibly interesting aspect of the analysis of the Absa Cape Epic; the information allows us to adapt our offering and leads us to speculate over what next year’s event will hold.

Quarantine, Day 253-255
November 19-22 So I haven't updated the journal for another couple of days and I have little excuse except for busyness, but I will make up for it now by really half-assing the job so I can go to bed. That's the sort of quality I know you've all come to expect from 255 days of this Quarantine Journal, and I aim to deliver! We are currently on our deeply unrecommended Thanksgiving trip, the one we've been mostly locked down for for the past two weeks in order to prepare for. I am a generally deeply rule-following eldest child personality, so doing something I know I'm being told not to causes me a lot of anxiety, even when I'm doing it in the best way possible. I have skipped basically everything I could get out of for the past two weeks just to minimize our chances of getting COVID and bringing it to my folks. Now we'll spend the next couple of weeks basically locked down with them in order to minimize our chances of taking COVID home with us. We will then spend a couple weeks at home as sort of an airlock quarantine period so when we go see MIL for the Christmas Season, we will no longer have germs from any of our previous travels on us. Swear to god, this vaccine can't go into circulation fast enough. I feel like we're measuring out our lives with coffee spoons. Okay, so Friday was mostly preparing for the trip. Desert Bus for Hope wrapped up in the morning (9am EST, after a walloping 164 hours of driving and $987k raised for charity) so I didn't get a lot of sleep. This affected my productivity in the daytime, but I still managed to get the kitchen cleaned up and supervise packing activities. I packed up a dozen wrap sandwiches and large bags of chips, snacks, fruit and drinks so that we could minimize our contact with the world during our trip. The plan immediately hit a snag Saturday morning when the truck would not start. This normally would not be a big problem because we were taking the minivan, but our truck was full of bags of garbage that our neighbors would be most displeased to see festering for two weeks. Our jumper box was not powerful enough to jolt it back to life, so we had to call roadside assistance. Towing guy not only did not wear a mask, he smoked nearly the entire time he was around so we had to stay way back from him, but he did get the truck going. Husband took the truck around the complex to let it run and deliver all the bags to the big dumpster while kiddo and I finished packing and locking up. We were on the road by 11, which was not great but could've been worse. We drove to Dayton on the first day, our usual stopover point at about 9.5 hours into the drive. We stopped twice on the way, both at Loves stations because they always do a good job cleaning. We didn't buy anything, just in and out in the time it takes to use a bathroom. Most people were wearing masks. I was able to get us quite a nice deal on a one room suite with a sofabed in Dayton, and the room was nice and very clean. We still took a bottle of bleach cleaner and hit up all the high-touch surfaces, just in case. The hot water was copious and I enjoyed a nice bath before going to bed. We did not get any food that day, just ate what we brought with us. I was woken up at just before 5am by the Red Cross, which means we all woke up because one-room suite. There was a fire in the nearby town to where we lived, and they needed a runner because the guy didn't have a phone. I told them that yes I'm on duty, but I'm only doing virtual intake. I arranged it with my partner A that he would run and I would do the computer stuff while I was gone. (It took two phone calls just for me to clarify that I could not run to Nearby Town because I was in fact in Dayton.) A was not picking up his phone this morning so that was not great, but there wasn't much I could do. I clarified all this, hung up, went back to sleep, and was woken twenty minutes later to have the same conversation with another DAT supervisor. She was irritated that I hadn't told her about the arrangement A and I made, even when I told her that I cleared it with the DAT coordinator because apparently he has faffed off to California for the week. All I could do was shrug, because I'd asked for Thanksgiving week off ages ago and didn't get it, so I was doing my best. Anyway, by the time I finished the call we were all awake, but we did manage to catch a little more sleep before it was time to get up for real. We cleaned up, dressed, and packed up the hotel room in very good time because we do it a lot and are experts. We were just about to leave when the Red Cross called again. I was about to be seriously irked until I realized this was legit a totally different event and apparently today is just a "things catch on fire" day. The unusual thing was that the building that caught fire was actually incredibly close to where we live, so close that I could've walked to the response if I weren't in, you know, Dayton. As it was though, we finally got hold of A to do the runs, so I wound up hotspotting my laptop to my phone, which I hadn't known I could do in a moving car until today, then did intake calls for this apartment building fire while Husband navigated us through an extremely rainy morning drive and my stomach severely rejected the Burger King breakfast we'd grabbed because the hotel had suspended its breakfast service. It was not the least stressful car ride I've ever had, but stuff got done. We had to stop three times for the six hour drive today because my stomach was Extremely Sad About French Toast Sandwich, but each one was very short and careful. Once I stopped eating or drinking anything, my stomach and I were able to reach detente and we arrived at our destination around 3:30. By then we were super hungry, but that was okay because my folks were totally ready to feed us delicious hamburgers on the grill, fried parsnips, and cauliflower tots from the air fryer. It was all very delicious. Tomorrow is going to be an early day because kiddo's school starts at 9est, which is 8 in Illinois, and I have to make sure he's ready and that his internet is working. Knock on wood, because he'll be doing school like this for the next little while!

Read on Ao3 Here
The last 164 hours had been hell for Tony. The inventor felt like he had been on a roller coaster that had an infinite amount of twists and turns and was fueled by pure panic. In that time the man had hardly slept, hardly eaten, and definitely hadn’t showered. But none of that mattered because his children were missing.
They had been taken nearly a week ago. Ambushed as Happy escorted them to Central Park. Morgan had been begging to go back to the city. The young girl had been a few weeks prior and had fallen in love with the large park. There were so many dogs for her to make friends with and she loved the wooded paths and quiet coves that could be found in the park. Not to mention the giant squirrels that would beg for snacks. Of course Tony and Pepper were too busy to make another trip back right away, so when Peter offered to take the girl after school, the family jumped at the opportunity.
Peter and Morgan had been almost inseparable since the events of the second snap. From the first time Peter came to the lake house, Morgan was glued to his hip. She had to spend as much time with her “big brother” as she possibly could.
“I know you can handle yourself Pete, but I’ll have Happy drive you guys there. Just in case anything happens,” Tony remembers saying to the teen. There had been an eye roll, but a smile as Peter reluctantly agreed. That was the night before everything went to shit.
At four o’clock in the afternoon, on a Friday, as the three were driving from Midtown High to Central Park, the car had been ambushed. The car was totaled, Happy incapacitated and the children taken. It was an unnamed group that Tony had no information about. They didn’t contact the billionaire about ransom or any sort of bargain. They were just gone.
Of course Tony tried to track Peter’s phone, watch, and suit. He was sure the kid had the suit in his backpack, and Peter never went anywhere without his technology. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that both the watch and the phone must have been destroyed.
Two days passed with no new information coming in. It honestly felt like the two kids had just fallen off the face of the earth, and Tony felt hopeless. And then suddenly, at three in the morning on the third day, Tony got a call.
“Boss, I have a call from an unknown number,” Friday called out, pulling Tony from his stupor. “It seems to be Mr. Parker,” she added. And oh hell did that wake Tony up.
“Answer it Friday,” Tony commanded, his heart jumping into his chest as he sat up from his desk. “Now.” The line was silent for a moment and Tony wondered if his AI had actually followed his directions before a voice sounded over the line.
“Mr. Stark?” A voice called out. It was unmistakably Peter.
“Kid,” Tony choked out. “Are you okay? Is Morgan with you?” He asked, his heart rate elevating as he spoke.
“I’m okay. I mean, we’re okay,” Peter corrected as he spoke. His voice was light, and slightly airy as he spoke. He seemed to be out of breath. “Morgan’s okay. She’s scared, but she’s fine,” Peter continued, trying to put the father’s mind at ease just a bit. But before Tony could respond, Peter was talking again. “Look Mr. Stark. I don’t have much time to talk. I stopped them, for now. But they’re going to get us again if Morgan and I don’t move. I don’t know where we are. I-I think they did something to my suit, because Karen says her signal is being blocked. All I know is that we’re somewhere west. Maybe Montana? I don’t know,” the teenager explained, his voice increasing in speed as he spoke.
“Peter listen,” Tony interrupted. “Just stay put and-”
“No Mr. Stark. I’m sorry but that’s not an option,” Peter quickly interjected. “Look, I was just calling to let you know we’re okay. We gotta’ go. Please hurry and find us,” Peter stammered, and before Tony knew it, the phone connection was lost.
That was four days ago. Tony had tracked down the signal from the phone Peter had used. It had come from a base in the middle of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho. A collection of small buildings in the middle of the wilderness is what Tony found, in addition to a helicopter landing pad. From there it was easy to track down the people that had taken Peter and Morgan, and even though he had them in custody, he still didn’t know where his children were.
Selway was a large area. With almost 1.3 million acres of land to search though, and an enhanced teenager with four days of travel time, the two could honestly be anywhere. Tony knew that Peter would do everything in his power to make sure that Morgan was safe and as comfortable as possible, but it still didn’t ease his worry. Because they had to go up against Mother Nature, and she was unforgiving.
There were massive search parties all throughout the wilderness. A local search comprised of Natasha, Bucky, May, police, rangers, and volunteers searched the ground while Tony, Pepper, Rhody and Sam searched from the skies. During that time, temperatures dropped below freezing and it rained. And as the hours ticked by, the more Tony was expecting to find bodies. Oh God if they could at least find bodies.
And then, nearly a week after the two had disappeared, Tony heard the words he had been desperate to hear.
“I found them,” Bucky’s voice cut through the coms, making Tony come to a halt mid-flight. All he could do was hover because...had he actually heard right? “Tony, Pepper I found them. They’re alive. I’m sending you and evac. my coordinates,” The soldier said, as a dot appeared in Tony’s Heads-Up Display.
“Is Morgan okay? Peter?” Pepper quickly asked.
“Morgan’s awake. She’s a little scratched up, and she seems to be sick, but she’s okay,” Bucky explained.
“And Peter?” Tony asked again as he changed his flight path to meet up with the soldier.
“He alive Tony, but he’s in a bad way,” Bucky said, his voice heavy as he spoke.
When Tony arrived on the scene, Pepper was already there. She was out of the rescue suit and holding their small daughter up against her chest as she cried into her hair. Morgan was audibly crying as well, and as Tony got closer, he realized that she was wearing Peter’s Spider-Man suit. It was too large for her. The over sized arms and legs swallowed her form and made her look even smaller than she actually was.
“Daddy,” Morgan wailed as the inventor got closer. Suddenly the girl was shifting in her mother’s grasp before she was transferred to Tony’s arms. Now that he was holding her, he realized that the suit she was wearing was stuffed with dead leaves and dried grass. “D-daddy. Petey. He won’t wake up,” the young girl stammered, her voice rough as she spoke. The signs of a cold.
“Hey, hey. It’s okay. We’re here now baby. Peter’s going to be fine,” Tony soothed as he placed a kiss on the top of his daughter’s head. And while he said that, Tony just prayed that he wasn’t wrong. He hadn’t even seen the boy yet.
After scanning the area around him, Tony’s eyes landed on Bucky who was kneeling down next to the boy as he laid on the forest floor. He looked sick, that was for sure. His skin was pale and dark circles were underneath his eyes. He looked absolutely exhausted. After giving a single kiss to Morgan’s head, he gave the girl back to her mother before making his way towards the teen.
“He’s got a dangerously weak pulse,” Bucky muttered as he pulled away his flesh hand from Peter’s neck. All Tony could do was drop down beside the soldier, his hands ghosting over the boy’s body, but not daring to touch it.
“How did you find them?” Tony asked, his voice weak.
“I broke off from the group, going through some terrain that the other couldn’t do on their own. I heard Morgan crying though. I found them here, huddled under the tree,” Bucky said as he surveyed the space around him. “Peter had pulled a bunch of branches and foliage over them. If It wouldn't have been for Morgan making noise, I probably would have walked right past them,” Bucky explained.
Once back in safe arms, the two children were taken to the nearest hospital. Morgan had a nasty cold and was suffering from an intestinal infection from drinking contaminated water. The Spider-Man suit she wore was completely ruined with her own mess, but when they peeled it off of here, Tony was shocked to see she was wearing another layer of Peter’s clothing underneath, and that the heater from the suit was still running. In fact, without the heater running, it was determined that Morgan probably wouldn't have survived the ordeal. Peter on the other hand was another story.
The boy was suffering from an intestinal infection as well and that had caused him to be severely dehydrated. To make matters worse, it was clear that the two had not eaten much. Morgan was showing signs of malnutrition while Peter looked like he had been severely starved. And Tony knew that Peter’s crazy metabolism did nothing to help the situation. So with dehydration, exhaustion, starvation, and no warm clothing, it was no surprise to find out that Peter had hypothermia.
It had been a few hours since the two had been brought back to civilization, and Tony found himself sitting at Peter’s bedside. The lights were off and the only thing illuminating the room was the glow from the monitors in Peter’s room, and Tony’s phone. The inventor knew that while Karen’s signal had been jammed, she had been functional the entire time. And that meant that she was recording, both audio and visually.
In all honesty, Tony didn’t want to listen to what happened while his children were out in the wilderness, fighting for their lives, but he had to know what happened. So that’s how he found himself slipping on a single earbud to listen and watch what had happened those missing seven days.
“Karen, baby monitor protocol. The first time stamp after they were taken,” Tony instructs, and the screen flickers to life.
---
Peter’s wearing the suit. It’s clear that he is swinging through the dense forest, but Tony can tell that the boy is struggling to keep his momentum up.
“Peter, I’m scared,” A small voice cries out, and after a moment Tony realizes that Peter is swinging with only one arm while carrying Morgan in the other.
“I know Momo, I know,” Peter soothes, his voice tight as he takes in a labored breath. “But we got to keep moving. We got to get as far away from those bad people as possible.” Peter explained.
“But where are we going?” the girl demanded.
“I don’t know Mo,” Peter says, and Tony swears he’s never heard Peter sound so sad. “But dad is going to find us okay? He knows where to look now.”
---
After forwarding through the footage, Tony watches as Peter approaches his daughter. The young girl is sitting on a log as rain soaks through their clothing. Her face is red as tears mix with the rain as it runs down her face.
“Here Mo,” Peter says as he lifts the mask from his face, and suddenly the camera angle is obscured. “This will keep your ears warm,” and in another moment the camera is fixed and Tony realizes that Peter had placed the mask on Morgan’s head.
For most of the video he has been able to see Morgan, but now he gets a good look at the teenager. He looks wrecked. It is so clear that the boy is sick and running on empty, and in these snippets alone, Tony has to wonder how the kid managed to last a few more days from this point.
“There’s a heater in this,” Peter explains to the girl and suddenly he is taking his Spider-Man suit off of his body and putting it on the small girl. “Don’t take this off, no matter what,” Peter says, helping the girl adjust the suit.
From there Tony watches the hours go by in fast forward. Peter has his backpack with him and suddenly he pulls out a hoodie and sweats. Tony thinks that maybe the kid will put them on himself, only to remember that they had found Morgan wearing the clothing. About a day later Peter then stuffs the leaves and grass in between the suit and clothing to keep the young girl insulated.
Of course they continue to move. They don’t eat much, But with Morgan wearing the mask, Tony can see that Peter is doing is best to scavenge for some sort of meal for Morgan. It’s mostly berries and plants. And when they come along a stream, Peter somehow is able to catch fish. Of course the little girl opposes most of the sustenance Peter offers her, but after begging her to eat, Morgan gives in. She’s starving after all.
In one video Peter is kneeling in front of her, holding on to a piece of raw fish. It’s chunky and sloppily cleaned, with scales still stuck to the meat, but it’s obvious that Peter has worked hard to make it appetizing for Morgan. Tony can hear his daughter crying in the background as he watches Peter sitting in front of her. He can tell how spent Peter is based on how bad his hands are shaking. Maybe he’s shaking because he’s so cold, or maybe he’s hungry and tired. Tony can’t tell because each could be a possibility.
“Morgan, Please,” Peter begs, his own tears falling down his cheeks as he pleads with the child in front of him. “I know you’re hungry, and I know it doesn’t taste good, but you have to eat for me. Please,” Peter begs, tremors shaking through his hands and causing the piece of fish to vibrate. “If you want to see Mom and Dad again, you have to eat,” Peter instructs, only to get more shrieks of protest in return.
Tony continues to watch various videos that are similar to the ones he’s seen before. That, and the two just sitting in one place, waiting. By the time it gets close to the sixth day, the two hardly move. Morgan is uncharacteristically quiet as she huddles against Peter. At some point Peter takes Morgan underneath a tree and begins pulling in larger tree limbs with the leaves till on them and begins to make a cover for them. From there he pulls in nearby foliage until the two are completely covered. Peter then take’s Morgan and lays her down under their cover before wrapping his body around the girl to give her more warmth. And they just lay there, for hours.
“Mr. Sark’,” Peter slurs over the recording. Morgan still has the mask wrapped over the top of her head, so Tony can’t see much, but he’s surprised to hear the teen speak after so much silence. He’s slurring his speech though, and Tony’s heart only sinks because he knows that those are the symptoms of hypothermia that is taking over Peter.
“Mr. Sark’,” Peter stammered again as a sob wracks through Peter’s chest, and suddenly the boy is crying, yet still not waking the girl who sleeps next to him. Without any warning the mask his pulled from where it sits and the imagine begins to shake. Peter is holding the mask and now Tony can tell that he’s shaking violently. “M’ Sorry. I don’t think we’re going to make it. I-I tried so hard. I’m so sorry Morg’n got taken. It-it’s all my fault. An’ n-now we’re going to die here,” Peter sobbed. “I love you. Both you and Morgan and Pepper. And I’m so sorry this happened. It’s my fault Mr. Sark’. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.” Peter began to chant. Slowly Peter just began to blubber nonsense and Tony’s heart broke as he listened to his kid fall apart.
“Oh Peter,” Tony muttered as he paused the video before his eyes flickered up to the boy who lay in front of him. He looked so fragile as he was hooked up to more machines than Tony liked. He looked like he would break by just looking at him, but Peter was here. He had been through hell and back, all to make sure that Tony’s daughter survived. Leaning forward, Tony took hold of Peter’s hand and squeezed gently. Tears began to build at the corners of Tony’s eyes and suddenly the man was breaking down.
“God. Peter I thought I had lost you. Both of you,” Tony whispered as he covered his face with his free hand. “I-I love you too bud,” Tony gasped, suddenly wishing that he had told the kid that more often. “You- You did so good Pete. I can’t thank you enough. You did so good. Thank you,” Tony cried, squeezing the boy’s hand one more time.

saltnhalo’s 2018 writing
I made one of these roundups last year, so I figured I’d do the same this year. Between travelling and being in the hospital for a while, I didn’t get quite as much done, but I’m still damn proud of all my words.
Fics on A03
Roll With It (January)
8,086 words this year, 72k total (Explicit)
For two years, Dean’s been slaving away beneath his boss – many label him a secretary, but he fucking hates that and feels like it only applies to someone wearing a pencil skirt, so he insists on his title of Executive Assistant. And for what? In the vain hope that one day he’ll manage to become an editor for Sandover Publishing, and that he’ll see the manuscript that he’s slaved over since college finally realized in print.
That’s the dream, anyway.
Right now, he’s fucking late.
Dean wants to be an editor. Castiel just wants to stay in the country. ‘The Proposal’ – as you’ve never seen it before.
(Editor!Cas, Assistant!Dean)
I Don’t Know Why (January-February)
10,710 words this year, 16.5k total
Dean gets home from a long job to find a note on his front step. He knows exactly who it’s from and what it means; it promises fun and danger and a fucking good time, and there’s no way he can turn down this invitation.
He can never say no to the Angel.
(Assassin!Cas, Spy!Dean)
Flowers (February)
1,004 words, 3.4k total, co-written with destimushi and cryptomoon (Teen)
Three times Dean gave Cas flowers. Well. Kinda.
(Canon compliant, Valentine’s Day)
The Galaxy’s Most Wanted (March)
10,155 words (Explicit)
Dean had been the one always up to mischief, running around with his father’s broken laser pistol and constantly getting into places he shouldn’t have been. Sam, in comparison, always seemed to be the smart, studious one – until he reprogrammed the AI in their neighbours’ house to play ‘Happy Birthday’ at the loudest possible volume while keeping all the doors and windows firmly locked. It had taken two experts seven hours to undo the coding that Sam had managed to integrate into the house’s programming.
So, yes. They had been exceptional even from the beginning. And when John Winchester crossed one too many people, his sons inherited his beloved ship, and took to the cosmos doing what they knew best: stealing.
And they were damn good at it too. Almost unrivalled, across their own galaxy and even those neighbouring.
Almost.
(Space pirates, enemies to lovers)
Ensnared (April)
1,543 this year, 10k total (Mature)
As the current pulls him a little closer to the island, the singing grows stronger. It’s deep and lyrical and the most beautiful thing he’s ever heard and he’s suddenly overcome by the desperate, searing need to be closer, to hear it in all its intended glory.
And as he passes a single spur of rock that juts out a little further into the ocean than the others, Dean sees him.
(Siren!Cas, shipwrecked!Dean)
A Lesson In Obedience (April)
6,396 words (Explicit)
Castiel helps Dean to relax after a long and stressful day at work.
(Sub!Dean, Dom!Cas)
Little Blue Dragon (April)
23,820 words (Explicit)
Dean Winchester may have a reputation for being a skilled craftsman and blacksmith, but his life is just like anyone else’s. He’s over-worked and under-slept, and it’s all because of the niggling feeling in the back of his mind that tells him he’s… forgetting something. Still, he can’t let his weird dreams or errant thoughts get in the way of his work and his love for his craft. The strange feeling goes ignored.
That is, until he meets a man with jewel-blue eyes and an aura of intrigue. Castiel slots into his life in a way that Dean had never thought possible, and Dean grows accustomed to the mysterious man’s visits and brilliant smiles and tales of far-away places.
He’d never known he was missing a piece of himself until he met Castiel, and he thinks that Cas might feel the same way.
Until Castiel disappears from Dean’s life completely.
(Blacksmith!Dean, dragon!Cas)
Worst Impressions (May)
15,061 words, co-written with thepopeisdope (Explicit)
It should be a simple story: they meet, they click (or don’t), and they move forward with their lives from there. It happens every day.
Except in reality, for them, it’s not nearly that simple. It’s more like: they meet, they hate each other with a passion, and then suddenly a firefighter is on a date with a librarian, and somehow that isn’t the most unexpected development of their relationship.
From the instant Dean saw that the drop-dead-gorgeous firefighter had horns and a tail, he knew he was fucked.
(Angel!Dean, demon!Cas)
Trouble In The Best Way (July)
2,173 words (Teen)
When Dean is called in to see Emma's principal about his daughter's behaviour, he's not expecting to encounter one of the most attractive guys he's ever met in Castiel Novak, the father of Emma's partner-in-crime.
(Single parents, strangers to lovers)
Through The Fire (June-September)
30,444 words, WIP (Explicit)
When John Winchester strikes a deal with the Alpha of another pack, Dean is the one forced to take the hit for his family. He suddenly finds himself betrothed to the infamous mafioso Castiel Krushnic—an alpha with a terrifying reputation, who commands respect from all those who meet him. Once mated, Dean and Castiel must find a balance in the dynamics of their relationship, or risk bringing the whole of the Krushnic empire to its knees.
The challenges thrown their way have to be handled together, for better or for worse.
(Mafia AU, A/B/O)
Kiss Me, Kill Me (September)
4668 words (Mature)
Seasoned hitman Castiel Novak is just looking to take out his target and get paid, but should've accounted for the fact that he may not be the only assassin at tonight's party...
Cue the mysterious, green-eyed man who is more of a match for Castiel than anyone he's ever met.
(Assassin AU, A/B/O)
What The Rain Brings (October)
6,043 words (Explicit)
In which Castiel's new roommate—supposed to be an alpha, under the guidelines of the college dorms—turns out to be a) late, and b) a beautiful, sarcastic, drenched omega.
(College AU, A/B/O)
Such Familiar Magic (December)
6,333 words (Teen)
When solitary witch Castiel finds an injured dog unconscious in his garden, he takes it in. He's expecting to heal it, look after it for a few days, then perhaps return it to its owners.
He's not expecting it to be one of the strongest familiars he's ever met.
(Witch!Cas, familiar!Dean)

Coronavirus live news: New Zealand could permit gatherings of 100 from next week

Rory Carroll
Bewley’s coffee shop, explained by the poet Brendan Kennelly as “the heart and hearth of Dublin“, is likely to completely close after concluding it will not be able to operate post-lockdown under Ireland’s social distancing rules.
Managers at the historic cafe on Grafton street, long connected with James Joyce and other authors, informed staff members “with deep remorse and terrific sadness” that it was likely to completely close in coming weeks, with the loss of 110 jobs.
The coffee shop closed momentarily in mid-March due to the Covid-19 constraints and would be permitted to reopen next month under the government’s lockdown relieving plan.
Nevertheless social distancing measures, along with high lease and a collapse in traveler numbers, made business no longer feasible, the handling director, Cól Campbell, said in a note to personnel.
Opened in 1927, the aroma of coffee and the promise of sticky buns and cakes drew crowds of artists, trainees and tourists, a bustle that produced a distinct atmosphere no longer practical under social distancing guidelines.

The loss of Bewleys Coffee shop Theatre impacts more then Dublin, this is where we get to see new work from around the nation and playwrights & actors gain access to press evaluations. I can remember theatre from @ConalCreedon @annblake78 @CoraFenton but I’m sure there’s much more … https://t.co/7bZqebSFaJ

Issues are high in the capital as one-third of 500 random coronavirus tests in returned positive, health officials said recently.
Wahid Majroh, deputy health minister has said the outcome of 500 tests are worrying though. He has actually warned that the danger of the virus is its “greatest level”.
In spite of a government authorised lockdown in a number of provinces, streets are still crowded which raises worries of a rise in variety of death and infections amongst experts.
Meanwhile, war heightened throughout the nation, Defense ministry said the insurgents carried out attacks in around 20 provinces on Tuesday as the Taliban turned down numerous offers of ceasefire.
The United Nations Objective in Afghanistan has said that more than 533 civilians consisting of 152 children were killed in first quarter of 2020.

A team of Indonesian engineers have actually stated they have produced a compact ventilator from plastic drinking tumblers to sell at a portion of the usual cost.
The 40 engineers from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) have actually developed the Vent-I ventilator, which is the size of a mini-oven.
The institute will intend to sell the devices for $1,000 each, one-twentieth or less than the normal $20,000 to $25,000, stated team leader Syarif Hidayat.
” The structure of this ventilator is much simpler compared to the ventilator we see in the intensive care unit,” Hidayat informed Reuters.
Like many nations around the world, Indonesia has actually also experienced a shortage of the mechanical breathing devices during the pandemic.

India: cases increase past 50,000
Coronavirus cases in India have increased past 50,000, according to the health ministry.
The upgrade comes as the pace of infection in the nation reveals no indications of slowing, despite a stringent lockdown.
On Thursday, India reported 3,561 brand-new cases, taking its overall to 52,952 The nation’s death toll increased by 89 to 1,783
The figures are still low compared to western countries consisting of the United States, UK and Italy.
Indian authorities have attributed the low toll to the federal government’s move to impose a stay-at-home order on the nation’s 1.3 bn people early in the crisis.
Nevertheless, they noted an eruption in cases within the largely jam-packed economic centres of Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad.
Health minister Harsh Vardhan said Maharashtra, the state in which Mumbai lies, was a location of particular issue and that the federal government was on standby to assist.
” The [government] is prepared to help in every method possible. Be it workforce increase, capability building, technical support etc. or any kind of handholding that is required to manage the circumstance,” he stated at a meeting with state health officials.

The chief of personnel to German chancellor Angela Merkel has stated the coronavirus pandemic will last for a minimum of the remainder of the year.
” We are not living after the pandemic now – rather we are residing in the middle of a pandemic, one that will be with us for a while – at least for this year and that’s being very positive,” Helge Braun told Deutschlandfunk radio on Thursday.
Yesterday, Merkel revealed steps to alleviate the coronavirus lockdown in Germany but at the same time introduced an “emergency situation brake” system permitting restrictions to be renewed if Covid-19 infections rise again.

Leaving Dickson, we set off for Campamento Perros. This day was one of the most beautiful! One of those days where you can’t stop taking pictures and can’t help but be grateful to be alive, to be breathing and seeing this scenery. I was starting to feel better but nowhere near 100 percent yet. We took our time and took in all the beauty of Patagonia. The mountains spread as far as we could see. This part of the hike was forested, dense, and thick with some pretty decent accents — the first coming right out of Dickson Camp. There are fantastic views of the backside of the Towers and extraordinary views of the Valle de Los Perros during this section.

Rockin’ my Elevation hat…as always!
Tumblr media
We stopped to eat alongside a river. One of the things any backpacker has to consider is water. It’s vital and, in my opinion, one of the most important things to consider. It’s a vital life saving force. In most of my hiking experience….(ok other than when I was a hose-drinking wild kid and didn’t know better) I’ve filtered water. I have a great filtering system that condenses down into a small pouch. I’ve heard the horror stories of people not filtering and falling so sick that they’ve had to stop their hike. Heading into this trip, ALL of my research showed NO FILTERS were needed along this hike. I was skeptical. The last thing you want is to be sick… from bad water. The flu I can conquer, but hiking with a stomach illness, sleeping in a tent, with little to no showers did not sound great to me. I packed the filter, but ultimately after talking to people and guides in Chile before leaving, left it along with our “travel clothes” in the hostel in Puerto Natales. That’s trust in humanity!
“Patagonia water is the best water you could ever possibly drink,” we heard over and over. “It’s straight from glaciers and the purest, finest, cleanest water ever!”
TRUTH!!
I’ll tell you, though, the first time I had to take the lid off of my bottle and dunk it into a water source and drink, I was on my knees praying that everything I had read and had been told was the gospel. And it was! That’s faith!
G and I still talk about the water there and wish so terribly we could find a way of getting it here. It’s hands down the best water on our planet!
We got into camp a little early, set up our space, and backtracked along the trail to Los Perros Lake and glacier. We marveled at the icebergs floating in the turquoise water of the lake. We took a ton of photos and sat taking in God’s creation. We breathed in the Holy wind.
G and I, even though we spend a lot of time together, never lack in conversation. He and I can sit into the wee hours of a morning, from the night before, talking. We can go to dinner together, sitting across a table from one another, like no one else is in the restaurant and have a 3 hour dinner just chatting away. BUT we also crave our alone time. Our independence. It has always been an important and essential part of our relationship, and we always consider and honor one another’s space.
Tumblr media
Bridge For One
On this day…after the funny pictures and skipping rocks into the water, trying to reach out and touch some icebergs we both found ourselves wandering to the opposite sides of the lake. Taking our time, individually to pray, meditate and just be alone. We have been coexisting in a 2-pound backpacking tent with a space of 88 x 42 inches for the past 7 days….we needed to air out our minds, our hearts….our pits. HA! We needed to get quiet, to listen, to take in what was being given to us. What nuggets were we going to glean from this adventure?
As we were getting up to leave, we heard the strangest sound… we stopped, looking around, and right across the water, a HUGE section of the glacier was cracking off. It plunged right into the water! We stood there mouths gaped.
The next morning was an early alarm. We knew we were hiking over John Gardner Pass. The weather on the pass can change in an instant, and we knew our best bet was to get an early start because weather conditions in Torres del Paine are generally better in the mornings.
We put on our headlamps and started our ascent in the dark. The first section is forested. It is wet, dripping, and had parts with creek-like crossings, and oversized puddles. It is swampy and has mud holes that will swallow you up. The rocks are slippery, and we had a couple of slips, nothing too terrible, but I was happy for my Jackie Chan-like skills when one of my trekking poles slipped off of a boulder and left me falling headfirst towards the deep, dark, black mud. Somehow I was able to hop-scotch my way whilst falling headlong, recklessly. I somehow recovered gracefully after bouncing over several logs, roots, and boulders. We stood and laughed for the longest time, remarking how we wished we would’ve “caught that on video” and thinking about what it would’ve looked like had I fallen. I am glad I didn’t find out!
We took our time over this section and eventually came to the boulder field that is the toughest part of the pass. It’s full of small and large boulders that require maneuvering around. Quite a few places were gushing water from melting snow, and we felt like we were climbing through waterfalls. Essentially… we were. We were happy that this day was sunny and hot and that the glacier water was ice cold! There was a steady stream of hikers heading up at the same time, and we would watch as other hikers, looking like ants, would disappear over the saddle to their first view of Glacier Grey.
The final pitch was steep and seemed like we were never going to get over the top… then… there we were!
The view!
Isn’t it incredible how after so much effort in a huge climb, there is a reward. Kind of like like, huh?
 DCIM100GOPROGOPR1724.JPG
I often get overcome with emotion when I hike in the mountains. The enormity of it all just takes my breath from my lungs. I feel so small and it really humbles me to be surrounded by such giants. I stood in complete silence and awe.
We were gifted on this day with perfect hiking weather. This pass is riddled with wind, snow, and rain, but today was full sun, blue skies, and NO wind. We talked with several guides who said that type of weather happens about three times a year on that pass. THREE TIMES A YEAR! and here we are atop the pass with the most perfect view of Glacier Grey, in the most perfect weather, surrounded by snowcapped mountains. I could’ve just died right there it was so magnificent. Thank you, God.

Grey Glacier is a glacier in the Southern Patagonia Ice Field. It flows southward from the Patagonian Andes Mountains into Grey Lake. The glacier is 6 kilometers (3.72 miles) wide and over 30 meters (98 feet) high. It occupies a total area of 270 km2 (100 sq mi) and a length of 28 km (17 mi) It’s the second-largest contiguous extrapolar icefield. There are truly no words to describe this glacier!
After taking photos and spending time taking in this marvel, we made the massive decent down, relishing the views of the glacier and having fun on the suspension bridges. If you’re afraid of heights… stop here, because these bridges are incredibly long and the valleys that they connect are DEEP! The highest and longest bridge is 80m high (262 feet), and 50m (164 feet) long.
Luckily it wasn’t windy, and I wondered as I crossed how these bridges would be in heavy wind. Thank you, Jesus!! I read over some blogs before our trip that said to be sure and HOLD ON in high winds. Ummm… We stopped at Paso Camp today. We rested, drank, filled our bellies, and chatted with fellow hikers about coming over the pass. We were exhausted, sun, and heat beaten and were happy to be off of our feet this day. One thing to note, there is zero ozone in Patagonia, so if you’re planning a trip, pack FIRST; sunscreen, SECOND; glasses! The sun is no joke!
Paso to Grey Camp was up for our next day. Grey was initially not on our itinerary… but ya know… those pesky eleventh-hour reservations… We were quite happy to get to Grey. We had decided we would sleep inside (a lot of people opt for the tent area) and had a shared room with another couple. Funny enough, it was a couple we had met a few days ago on a windy ascent but hadn’t seen since. It was like a family reunion when we opened the door of our bunk house. This is the first time in our history of travel that we’ve “bunked” like this. We were a little hesitant about this sleeping arrangement with total strangers! Turns out after hiking all. the. days. adding in a nice HOT shower and a legitimate meal in the restaurant… no one cared. We were so tired, after some small talk about our future adventures, we each collapsed onto our beds and slept straight through until the morning.
Grey Camp was in a gorgeous area against a sheer rock face. We sat out on the deck in Adirondack chairs, watching the sunrise the next morning.
From Grey, you can hike to the Glacier Mirador. After the Mirador, we headed off to our next camp, Paine Grande. This is the part of the trail where you meet up with the W hikers. This also begins two-way traffic on the trail, as there are a lot of day hikers and hikers heading in and out for an overnight or two. The trail gets busier after this section. G and I always call them “the shiny people” because frequently we have been out backpacking for DAYS and sometimes WEEKS and to day-hikers, I’m sure we look and ..ahem… smell like hobos. They pass us in their clean khakis and white t-shirts, smelling heavily of that morning’s shower. They have applied deodorant, fresh-hair in perky ponytails… and I think… I used to look pretty like that!
Paine Grande is a bustling place with O-hikers, W-hikers, and day-trippers. It sits stunningly on a lake with towering mountains to its side. We had already booked a room (alone) for this night’s stay. We checked in, showered, bought meal tickets FOR REAL FOOD in the morning, and set out to explore.
First stop; the fantastic bar on the top level. With its panoramic view, great music, and ice-cold beer, how could we pass that up? It was here that we talked over the trip that we knew would soon be ending. We talked about our ups and downs and the emotions that hit you when you’re on long treks like this. The peaks and valleys, and how real life seems to always follow trail life. We both hit low points. I was upset I had not felt 100 percent dealing with the flu, and I had times I got extremely frustrated with the congestion and nose blowing. Greg’s came after descending from John Gardner Pass, where I am convinced he was suffering some slight sunstroke and dehydration.
Looking back, I am still so glad I took the risk to start this hike.
Always take the risk! I could’ve let the sickness win, the fear of being miserable, the dismay of starting and maybe not finishing the hike, but like every hard thing in life, I pressed on and was so happy for that. I (we) never take our travel for granted. We both know there are people unable to travel as we do. There are couples who, one likes to travel, and one doesn’t, so they both don’t! For some, it’s a financial burden, some constrained by their career, some just simply don’t like to travel and some… are just paralyzed in fear to take that first step into something unknown. I can’t be that person and am thankful to have married a man who feels the same! There is no chance of tomorrow, and there is no chance that we will allow this precious life to pass by us.
We sat in this bar for a couple of hours and talked about the stories we will have for our future generations. Our grandkids… when looking at the globe someday, can hear stories of us climbing mountains and hiking all the miles, getting flooded in monsoons, eating God-knows-what from street vendors all over Asia. Standing in the Sea of Galilee in Isreal, getting stuck in the middle of the jungle, alone, on a motorcycle in Panama, having lightning strike so close that we felt our hair stand on end on a backpacking trip. Walking across a border crossing into Nicaragua, paragliding and sky diving, climbing down into war tunnels in Vietnam, surfing with giant sea turtles and stingrays all around us, nearly falling to my death in the Colorado Rockies… the list goes on…..
I know all grandparents have beautiful stories to tell their grandkids… and we can’t wait to share ours if someday God blesses us with littles.
We did a little sink laundry before heading over to the mess tent to cook some dinner. Greg was utterly crippled with eating dehydrated meals, so he opted to shop in the small store and buy… none other than Cup-a-Soup. Because that dehydrated food in styrofoam was far superior to the Packit Gourmet meals that we were currently existing on. Can you hear my sarcasm? I say this laughing because BOY does that food get old, and Cup-a-Noodles is like five-star cuisine when you’ve gotten tired of what you’ve packed.
As the sun set on another incredible night, we saw a Mama fox and her kits running around and playing in the meadow just outside. We moved out to take some video. They YIPPED and wrestled with one another until it was too dark to see.

Days 158 to 164
Well, we are home again so unless I get feedback that requires another post, this will be my final post to this blog and future blogs will be in separate streams.
We were in Bourke at my last post and on the Sunday, we drove a roughly triangular route down the Mitchell Highway to Byrock, then across country to Tarcoon and back to Bourke. Byrock was a fascinating little place and we stopped in for a coldie at the very quaint old pub. It was decorated with the usual things we see in quaint old pubs – cutsie bumper stickers, old-time mining and pastoral gadgetry, a wild boar’s head or two, a rash of locals’ and tourists’ bragging photos and of course an array of annotated caps, hats, bras and undies – even hard-hats hanging from the ceiling or tacked to the walls. What was different was most of the furniture. It was locally collected and crafted mulga wood and it weighs a ton! Quite beautiful and rustic (although I have sat on more bum-friendly concrete), but it takes about two beers to accumulate the energy required to move a chair away from the bar – maybe there was some method in their madness in furnishing the bar in such a manner!
Driving back on the remote roads was quite delightful and we saw quite a few birds and a couple of snakes along the way – and yet another blazing sunset as we drove the final few clicks back to camp.
Monday we broke camp and set off intending to stay at Cobar, but we were there by lunchtime so elected to keep on down the Kidman Way to Hillston where we had intended spending two nights – now it would be three. We had stayed in Hillston a couple of times before and I enjoyed the birds and even caught yabbies there so wanted to try my luck again. We spent a week or so there one Christmas and still need to explain to people why we choose places like Hillston, Casterton and Dunolly to hide out while the crowds are storming the beaches and major rivers in the hottest weather.
The birds were as interesting as usual and I caught enough yabbies for Happy Hour one night, but I didn’t have a lot of bait so only left the nets in one day. On the Wednesday, we took the Monia Gap Road to Rankins Springs: another really interesting quaint little town with plenty of birds to watch and some somewhat extraordinary street art scattered around town. We added Rankins Springs and Byrock to our lengthening list of places to revisit. We had lunch and watched the birds under some shady trees there and then drove up to Lake Cargelligo. It seemed bigger than last time we visited, but maybe there were so many people and the noise of the traffic and speedboats meant that we didn’t have a proper look around then – even off-season, there were a lot of free-campers, but it was certainly more peaceful near the lake than last time. We found a great birding place – a wetland only a kilometre or two from town and despite the intense heat, I spent an hour or two ticking off 20-odd species including over 20 spotted crakes: normally very reclusive birds that are usually very hard to spot!!
Next night, we stayed at Finley, just over the border in New South Wales. We detoured a bit on the way, down to Griffith and then across to Leeton, Narrandera and through Jerilderie. It was a very pleasant drive and allowed for some birding around the Finley lake on arrival, but it was all tinged with a modicum of regret that we were so close to the end of our trip.
We had arranged to have lunch with Karen in Nathalia and afternoon tea in Shepparton with Kate to help celebrate her 30th birthday, so we just moseyed along very slowly and caught up with both of them and enjoyed our visits, even if both were necessarily fairly short.
Our last night was in a pretty awful caravan park in Kilmore. The sites were very small and hard to get into. We had to park at an angle across the site with half the car across the roadway to stay connected. At least that meant that coming home to a clean and comfortable house with all the comforts of home was a tad more acceptable than it might have been if the Kilmore park had been more luxurious.
On arrival back at Brooklyn where we have parked the van for the past few years, we found that the changes they had made in our absence meant we simply could not get our van in – and even had we managed that, we certainly could never have got it out again. Despite all the phone calls and negotiations we undertook when we were in the north-west, we had nowhere to park when we arrived home so there were a few frantic phone calls before we secured a spot in Burwood. It is about 50% more expensive and 50% further away, but perhaps marginally easier to get in and out, certainly a little more secure, totally under cover and although we no longer have 24 x 7 access, I am sure we will manage quite successfully. The biggest catastrophe was that whilst unloading heaps of stuff from the van into the car, the entrance step skidded away from under Heather and she crashed heavily (like a fairy?) and severely injured her right ankle. She has been hobbling around with a stick all week as a result, but nothing is broken (apart from the step!) and she is healing slowly. The step had slid away from under me a few minutes earlier and I had intended putting the rubber mat under it, but I got involved with other things and catastrophe struck.
What did we achieve along the way? A thousand things, not least of which was a huge amount of pleasure and a wealth of knowledge about a wide range of things, a lot of which quite astounded us. But in terms of specifics, we noted a few that we felt significant. Some of them are:
We travelled almost 50,000kms
We completed visits to the four cardinal points of Australia (NEWS)
We also completed visits to the cardinal points of all States and mainland Territories except for the north of WA
We completed driving the entire length of Highway One – in Tasmania as well as the mainland
We also completed driving the entire length of the Savannah Way
We drove the Gibb River Road
We drove the entire length of the Stuart Highway
We drove the entire length of the Barkly Highway
We drove the entire length of the Great Northern Highway
We drove the entire length of numerous shorter roads/tracks, e.g., the Carpentaria and Tablelands Highways, the Tuwakam Track, etc.
We visited all of Tasmania's accessible islands
We saw over 400 bird species and identified probably hundreds of plant species
We spent 67 nights in our caravan in Tassie and 164 post that – and have now lived in our caravan for well over 1½ years in aggregate.
What were the highlights? I couldn’t even start to list them – so many and so varied that they can’t even be compared one against another. They would include our trips into the Tassie wilderness, around the Cobourg Peninsula and over the Bungle Bungles, probably our adventures on King and Flinders Islands, maybe places like Borroloola, Nallan Station and Marble Bar, our nights camped in gravel pits with a roaring campfire burning….. The list goes on and that is without really stopping to review the trip in any analytical way.
What were the disappointments? Not many, but two stand out. The first was the broken axle that prevented us driving the Tanami and the second was that we had to come home – at least for a little time.
Finally, some statistics (for both components of our Ozzie Odyssey – Tassie and the Big Island) for anyone who might be interested. If nobody else is interested in them, they are at least a record for me and I am interested.
We drove 7344 km in our car and 1498 in hired vehicles in Tassie – a total of 8842 km. During that trip, we towed the caravan 2442 km and added another 2600 (+/-) in flights and cruises – over 11400 km all up.
On the Big Island, we drove 28472 km in our car, including 21320 towing the van, probably at least half of it on dirt. We also added a further 4000 km (plus) on tours, flights and cruises (including the Cobourg Peninsula jaunt), making the whole trip almost 33000 km in total.
Combined, we drove almost 42000 km, including 23762 towing our mobile cubbyhouse, and nearly 7000 km in flights, cruises and tours. At first glance, one might be tempted to suggest that we saw most of Australia during our travels, but when sketched on a map (Heather has it all set out in an app called Polarsteps), there are VAST virgin areas still to be explored. We live in a huge country with so much to see, so much diversity, so much beauty and adventure, a thousand lifetimes would not be enough.
As for birds, we saw 126 species in Tassie, of which 23 were new ticks for us. On our longer trip, we identified 319 species (41 of which we had also seen in Tassie), including 78 new ticks for us. That takes us to 404 species for the calendar year – that is 101 new ticks for us this year and our personal list (since we started recording in 2008) stands at 689 – plus a few Australian species that we have seen outside Australia, but not on Australian soil. There are still so many still to see, including a few special ones that I would really love to set eyes on. We were congratulated by the birding group we were with on Christmas and Cocos islands a little less than 3 years ago for reaching our personal ‘500′ milestone toward the end of that trip so we have identified a further 180 or so species in the last 3 years.
So, until I start my next blog………

Arc De Triomphe, Biggest Gate In Paris, France
Tumblr media
Got a thing for magnificent, breathtaking monuments? If yes, you’ll want to check out the Arc De Triomphe — the world’s largest triumphal arch. This incredible monument was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon I in 1806 to commemorate France’s military prowess, and it has since been viewed as one of Paris’s biggest tourist attractions. The 164 foot tall decorated arch is located at one of the craziest roundabouts in Paris — it crowns the west end of the Champ-Elysées, which happens to be city’s most iconic venue. It’s good to know that the view from under is spectacular, and you can choose to climb inside and get totally immersed in the beauty of Paris right from the top. What’s more, you’ll get a greater view of the Eiffel Tower!
The Arc de Triomphe is famed for spectacular sculptures by François Rude including La Marseillaise which can be seen at the right of the arch when viewed from the Champs-Élysées. On the stone facades, you’ll find names of Napoleon’s generals — the underlined names pinpoints the revered figures who lost their lives in battle.
It’s also good to know that the traffic circle around the Arc de Triomphe is named for Charles de Gaulle, but it’s better known as L’Étoile; a reference to the streets that sprung from it. Challenge yourself to climb the top of the arch, and you’ll get to see the star effect of the twelve radiating avenues as well as the vista down the Champs-Élysées toward Place de Concorde and the faraway Musée du Louvre.
Set to explore this magnificent wonder? We’re pretty sure you are — but before you book your flight and pack your luggage, here are some travel tips you’ll want to keep in mind.
Best Time To Visit The Arc De Triomphe
For starters, you can visit this classic landmark at any time you deem convenient — that’s why it’s a monument. However, you’ll definitely love the view after 6:30 p.m — this is the mind-blowing time when the commemorative flame of the unknown soldier is lit, and the Champ-Elysees is immersed in shimmering lights. What’s more, the arch’s observation deck (at the top) gives you the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre as well as the Sacré Coeur.
Generally speaking, the monument’s opening hours are from:
April to September; Monday to Sunday, 10 am to 11 pm
October to March; Monday to Sunday, 10 am to 11 pm
Handy Tips To Keep In Mind
Planning to climb to the top? If yes, be sure that you’re in good shape before going — it actually takes 284 steps to get there!
Never attempt to cross the traffic circle when heading to the monument; just access it from the precinct or subway below.
It’s sure to be an excellent idea to go around dusk especially if you’re looking to enjoy the sunsets and beautiful city lights.
You should know that it can be a bit cold at the top on a chilly windy day.
It’s also important to note that they take only cash — no credit cards.
So there you have it! At this point, you’re set to book a flight to Paris, France — the glory of the Arc de Triomphe awaits!

each girl need to be alive i’ll inform you that so Michael malice used to be on the Dave Rubin show recently I imply like two days ago I watched it and he is talking and that is some thing i have brought up in many instances how these figures in social media and YouTube are warning everybody they are just like the banks are already banning individuals PayPal is already banning persons then Michael malice is lovely calm about this he wasn’t to do about he he used to be just like good there will probably be competitors to the banks in order to take skills of those bannings and the whole lot will likely be first-rate and they will provide you with the solution well let me inform you some thing Michael malice you did not mention Bitcoin at least partially one the solution is already right here the answer is Bitcoin so so every body before all of your fellow 20 percenters percenters work out this predicament that banks will ban persons PayPal is banning folks okay earlier than every person else figures out this difficulty and it can be handiest gonna be 20 percenters you figure it out i don’t believe 80% of may also comprehend this however few realize this I imply there are such a large amount of sensible individuals staying low is the what are we to do what are we to do you get the coin earlier than every body figures out that we have already got a solution to the financial institution bans we have already got a solution so do not go up in arms do not go loopy don’t go doom don’t think the arena is about to end it can be fine you will have obtained huge coin which you can installed your entire system any means you want it with Bitcoin with a purpose to create content material and earn and and so forth etc and have your own bank account precisely be your possess mattress you do not want these banks at all correct now if you are in Bitcoin okay so yeah all of them ban you satisfactory you’ve gotten bought Bitcoin my glory that you would be able to travel far and wide on the planet with it relocating on this is a tweet from Mike boo Sela it’s concerning the CME staff i am who i am hoping known as no longer skipping whatever right here can’t false CME crew quantity see any Bitcoin future stats many strongest month ever q2 adv 164 percentage better than q1 over 2500 accounts have traded Bitcoin futures that’s just right news and on that Institute and that i I imply this is whatever we knew was gonna occur of direction it’s going to this eme the long run is all that nonsense and i’ll i would not ever participate in increasingly folks had been collaborating in it but right here we go from to Shar Jane he says all the colossal OTC desks appear to be having pink volumes to that is amazingly bullish for the enterprise clear signs of institutional money getting into the distance so yeah these are two clear indicators proper there now hey everyone knows what’s gonna happen that we that it’ll occur that uh institutional money is getting into the space generally purchasing Bitcoin as gbtc folks stated that the merchandise that they that almost all people are fascinated about our big coin even though Barry Silbert has all types of different product tasks so whilst you say the space most of these people are pondering Bitcoin when they’re speaking an institutional funding now of course they they out they will die they are going to diversify for the sake of diversification ultimately which I something that’s if they wish to mess with with that then they could try this in view that they don’t recognize that bitcoin is the subsequent Bitcoin one Bitcoin equals one Bitcoin do not follow on all coins now so with thinking of the future of institutional investors coming in and usual traders coming in persons who are used to looking at enterprises and looking at their CEOs and seeing if there is an argument if they’re run safely it’s taking the account I mean that’s how common economic firms are judged spike via very sounds back how sound is that this school how sound is this manufacturer how sound is this product good let’s suppose about bsv for a second consider about tuition a natural totally wealthy institution they usually’re they’re inspecting bsv or a tricked-out or warren buffett if he is watching at the I Warren Buffett sort of character looking watching at the SV they are gonna appear at who’s in cost okay so I mean feel rationally here people I particularly want you to think about the future of BS V when some humans that they make colossal claims about it or they are involved about it or something that’s gonna do anything to Bitcoin suppose about suppose about when when someone appears at that trouble national man or woman how can any rational institution that listens to some thing that comes out of that outfit are not able to even recall shopping that ok day to begin with it going beyond the fake Toshi stuff the other spokesperson is a guy who made all his cash in an unregulated gambling k so traditional associations are they gonna need to have whatever to do apart from disregard concerning the sociopath part of it with the man unregulated playing and lives within the Caribbean okay that’s now not some thing that usual traders in most cases get into k that enormous associations need to be part of so easily put the persons that are buying bsv are crypto children or crypto men and women are on this space are persons who like oh yeah certain he would say something you wish to have and certain he can say some thing he wants to say but there are expenditures to it k and there suppose logically humans consider like a grown-up or any tuition is gonna wish to touch that and all are it any and then feel in regards to the university money that is flowing into the distance in the Bitcoin and as a way to be trickled into some of the high-tier altcoins they are going to look at a few of these top-tier they are going to seem on the theorem particularly we will be able to get the fellow in charge there he is a genius so you know and he would not I imply there may be there isn’t any cursing and screaming and drama and claims and fits and this mat and the other um and he’s okay you know he is long past the fellow accountable for aetherium is is you understand the figurehead behind it here he’s gonna add his option to be friendly with the tuition’s he is very latest he believes in whatever that when radical markets all these commute to all these things which can be so he’s so good for the atmosphere in cetera cetera so again just just giving you guys a little style at some point for you uh so I mean you must feel like an tuition in the case of to that at least do not be a crypto kitty and say well oh maybe probably that’s a out hazard one way or the other gamble over there it is you die you’re welcome Bitcoin learned like button so that there is my take I mean take a couple of secs again when when you hear this bsv stuff and relatively feel after which think in regards to the institutional money that’s coming within the cryptocurrency and see how they fairly do not they’re not going within the identical direction okay so uh this is a funny tweet from jeet he video of the famous track video video killed the radio star video killed the radio began then jeeps line is bitcoin killed the real-estate artwork and liquid investment celebrity i admire that and gold famous person how about that there is my addition to that that’s fascinated by gold peter ship has a new video that is out and on the 40-minute mark or the forty five-minute mark and it towards the top here forty minute mark he started heat one factor that he says he talks about this he starts to speak in regards to the sixty minutes show about bitcoin and he talks about how he had a debate a gold versus bitcoin debate in all this and he has some intriguing world phrase he says nations will buy gold in instruction of a greenback give way and once more this is the same factor that individuals like peter schiff have been announcing considering 1981 i mean which you can go watch doug casey in 1981 on the Phil Donahue exhibit announcing announcing these matters that your country nations are gonna purchase gold and all set into da greenback cave in this buck crumple that’s in nineteen eighty one style of stuff right here but anyway shift still says it and men and women nonetheless buy into it and that i say it’s less difficult for the crucial bank’s to purchase Bitcoin or to make their possess cryptocurrency in fact instead of purchasing gold and he says important financial institution’s will under no circumstances purchase Bitcoin okay those are worse to consider he in reality says these phrases that principal banks will under no circumstances purchase Bitcoin and we in the Bitcoin we just dreamed that k um however once more he thinks the central banks that they they’re gonna buy gold they may be gonna purchase they may be gonna that is that’s the course they will go in to prepare for the battle they the legendary financial type from 1981 that is what he thinks they’re gonna buy he doesn’t consider you already know that he does not consider it is easy it’s simply simple for primary Bucks to purchase to purchase Bitcoin or to even create their possess crypto over buying gold ok so um that that is missing so he felt the 60 Minutes had the giant folks within the area on which is hilarious if he thinks charlie SRAM is a gigantic person or that indian girl is a enormous PerR he says it used to be so biased for bitcoin and at the 45 minute mark he quite starts analyzing this 60 minute hindrance to a point where it can be like a conspiracy theory he comes up with a 60 Minutes conspiracy conception for bitcoin he’s like all of the insiders knew this was once gonna happen so that’s why the pump the fee pumped and yeah pizza man was once interviewed on their it pizza guys one of the significant big avid gamers within the Bitcoin house i want the he is coming up he’s he is very desperate you understand the the reasons that he comes up with commencing on the 45 minute mark it sets on a targeted level it is sad considering that it’s seeing that he comes up with a conspiracy theories about 60 minutes why bitcoin was on 60 minutes and he says the piece was very very confident it used to be a very confident for those who could not ask for any significant coin persons could not ask for something more it can be ridiculous once more my grandmother watched it show she was scared when she was once she’s due to the fact that I mean they’re bringing out medications they’re citing all these matters that scare normies ok so i wouldn’t say it was once tremendous pop I wasn’t tremendous optimistic but that’s besides the factor watch on the go watch Peter cooks video at the forty five minute mark and notice that if he relatively does provide you with in actual fact a conspiracy thought about 60 minutes and Bitcoin now again I I convey this up I mean simply to show you uh that with the historical-university appear with that variety of golden holder he’s acquired some conviction that he’s developing with some wild and wacky stuff there however we should recall that he says that uh he says vital financial institution’s will under no circumstances purchase a large coin k he says that I say it they will they’ll they’re going to Penny Ling that however again I brought this up typically that was once one of the inspirational ideas that Vinnie came up with that encouraged me to get more Bitcoin and whilst you believe of it it makes sense there are quite a few central banks or there are lot of crucial banks to give an explanation for there are numerous international locations on this planet ok that had matters just like critical banks that they that they may be low leading international locations they may be gonna recognize eventually you recognize that is anything to prop us up just a little all correct panel edit button Oh God Almighty i’m so completely satisfied to exhibit his lifestyles here is a tweet from Jay from Kyle bass he has a piece of writing called quiet panic in Hong Kong at present i’m releasing air views on the monetary political and legal plight of Hong Kong I think buyers that have belongings invested there should immediately move them to united states of americaDollars before it can be too late now i am now not saying that i have bringing that up on the grounds that quite high panic the chinese are there a cost of Hong Kong but they’ve had a fingers-off approach however it’s getting more and more and more arms-on so folks who want to guard themselves they’re he’s saying you realize getting to the buck you liquefy your property there before the chinese take your belongings i assume is what he is saying I say they may be gonna peep they are going to be men and women who understand there is a quiet panic in Hong Kong and they’re not gonna purchase US dollar they’re gonna get in the Bitcoin so this if this and i do not need to sit down in a main issue in Hana kinda worsen i need the chinese language to have a fingers-off procedure i’ve been to Hong Kong before they it is it is rocking over there they’ve bought various good matters he it is it used to be big the chinese language didn’t construct that Hong Kong Kane was once underneath below British rule but he did that he succeeded and underneath underneath the Western manner of trade and free markets etcetera etcetera so i am adding love to look it continue that method but if if the chinese get more difficult their force you recognize have a strong hand and begin squeezing Hong Kong then yeah it’ll be just right for Bitcoin it this is just and matters like this this is what in other international locations that identical matters can occur govt becomes extra tyrannical folks are going to silently panic into Bitcoin so I I did I again some individuals will purchase it you liquefy their belongings into you the us bucks they are able to try this if they want to but it possibly less difficult for the k the in that a part of the world they recognize that Bitcoin they without doubt learn about Bitcoin all proper I keep in mind go to disrupt meister calm you could watch 1300 of my over 1300 my shows there the day prior to this after I used to be speaking about be in a yr the most important provide shock in the historical past of monetary markets all correct relocating on coin desk article and the only purpose i am bringing it up is due to the fact that it’s it says that you could now make investments that is Robin Hood currently that you would be able to put money into seven cryptocurrencies on Robin Hood crypto Bitcoin be cash be SV a concept of a theorem classic litecoin and dogecoin which you can additionally track price movements and news from 10 additional crypto currencies once more how huge of a participant in the house is is Robin Hood I have no idea they they’ll have some say in what’s a top to your all coin again they acknowledged one of the ones we’re already aware of Bitcoin P cashed aetherium a fair in traditional like coin so dogecoin most folks do not feel that’s and of direction bsv they are evidently including due to the fact good it used to be convenient to include i guess they’re not good they be aware of that the crypto kids are going to use the 19 year olds are gonna use their app to buy so it why no longer promote something that’s wholly insane like bsv once more they are now not they’re not like an tuition now some of the giant institutions or something like that but once more whats up so that is a whats up i am gonna say that i’m gonna i am gonna say it find it irresistible is that may be a confident for bsv if if an app like this desires to include it too in view that they believe they can become profitable off of it to signal it to the crypto kitties then yeah that does raise bsv a little bit but no then is not it BSP isn’t any prime to your offline i’ll let you know but they are able to they may be able to grep that’s an exact real factor if the BSP people you realize they may be into proceedings and all these things as an alternative of that they must drop it and say you know what Eddie we’re cool these are Robin Hood individuals are clearly carrying us you understand that’s simply an actual constructive factor for them however they they are now not too much into that they are into tons of wild and wacky experiences over there within the BSP lamp but anyway Robin Hood yeah you’re doing all of your part to variety of try to solidify what a prime-tier all coin is moot and eventually us store this for the future what is that this Adam oh oh no that is me telling such a large amount of sensible individuals staying low is the what are we to do what are we to do you get the coin earlier than every body figures out that we have already got a solution to the Solitude surrounds the guest when entering Emmanuel Monzon’s exhibition at Robert Kananaj Gallery. All the photographs seem similar at first glance in their quiet compositions and monochrome colours. Taking a closer look, one recognizes their nuances – and becomes mesmerised by their magical beauty. They radiate an ephemeral, almost surreal tension that captivates the viewer.
Monzon, a French born artist graduated from the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and started his career with painting, and his painterly values still dominate his photographs. They look like watercolours and are printed on watercolour paper. Moving to Seattle was a turning point in his life. As he said, “I had the feeling that my work could only be photographic for this space, which creates its own mythology.” Indeed, it did, as Monzon’s photographs are very unique in their themes, depictions and colouring.
Monzon travels a lot in the American West, around the deserts where urban settlements, surrounded by suburbs, meet industrial areas and a no-man’s lands of rocks and sand. All his images are entirely devoid of humans. Some suggest human occupation such as Urban Sprawl 167, with a parked trailer, parking spots, a strong outline of a building. The grey surface of asphalt ends abruptly at a rock and the landscape takes over. The pervasive colour is burnt sand – the whole area is covered with it, even the building seems to be made from bricks carved from the rock. There are traces of people, the neon sign at Jazzercise is on, there is a light inside the shop and in the building in the background, cars are in the parking lot – but not a single person or animal is around (Urban Sprawl 165). The only living thing is the large cactus, standing in front of a traffic light. The light has turned green – but for whom. Who had to stop and why at the stop sign (Urban Sprawl 164) and walk over the pedestrian crossing? As far as the eye can see there is nothing in that flat landscape that surrounds a sand rock – except emptiness. One can almost hear the moan of the soil cracked by heat, beaten and barren, or the silent cry of a lonely tree fenced out of the garden behind it (Urban Sprawl 185).
Tumblr media
Where are these places? Where are the people and animals? Even the shadows are not there. What’s happening? Did the people leave or is this a post-apocalyptic world? Maybe none of these. Rather I think it is a landscape with its “own mythology.” Monzon captures moments that can best be described as “in-between” moments, in which the activities of the town stopped for the day and haven’t started for a new one, where everyone sleeps or hides, where the place is left by itself.
Monzon’s landscapes are heavily modified, desecrated even destroyed by our hunger for expansion, making the land banal and ugly. Still we can’t deny the beauty in these photographs, but such a cruel beauty it is. As Monson stated in his latest interview, “the American natural landscape has redefined this space and has become itself a ‘non-place’. The transition from one site to the next: You have arrived and at the same time you have never left.” Whatever this place is, it is not the place you want to be. French anthropologist Marc Augè defined “non-place” as a place of anonymous solitude, like airports, motorways, parking lots where people meet in an illusion that they can be socially engaged, but actually it is not possible. Monzon photographs depict these “non-places” in their true nature: as timeless places where there are no sounds, only emptiness.
However beautifully depicted, this emptiness is sad, even painful. Urban Sprawl 162 portrays a dinosaur figure that would be more appropriately found in Disneyland. In its poor surroundings he almost smiles rather than snarls, his maker must be an amateur. He is definitely in limbo here, no one looks at him, he is totally isolated and his being is meaningless.
Urban Sprawl 182 reminds me of an ancient outdoor shrine in an old landscape, something like Stonehenge. Surrounded by ageless rocks there is an altar. That altar is made of concrete and an asphalt road leads to it. What kind of cruel joke is this? However, there is still a spiritual power surge about it. What God is worshipped here? Will he or she lift or destroy the soul? There is something sacramental in this uneasy emptiness and the unconscious mind resonates with the spirits occupying the shimmering whiteness of this place.
Monzon captures the moment of eternity and the eternity in the moment at the same time. His photographs show a void, a void that can not be filled.

Uber and Lyft racing to IPO
Tumblr media
While market volatility throughout the second half of 2018 put a pause on most IPO’s, investment bankers expect that to change that in 2019 with two blockbuster names. Silicon Valley VC wizards are looking to cash in on ride-hailing companies which are among the fastest growing privately held companies in North America.
As the largest ride-hailing service, Uber has potential to become one of the largest initial offerings ever and Lyft it’s much smaller competitor does not want to be left in the shadows. Lyft is hoping to get a first mover advantage and not be left in the shadows of it’s much larger rival in the new year.
A race to ring the Wall Street opening bell has Smart Money Gains exploring if investors should invest in one, the other or both when the time comes. After some incredible tech IPO Gains in 2018 (Anaplan 64%, Elastic N.V. 113%, Zscaler 164% etc. ) one has to wonder if these so called unicorns will be the next big winners.
Some Wall Street analysts project Uber’s value to range from $100-$120 billion on opening day. It’s most recent private round of funding valued them $72 billion so with the hype that this IPO will bring we should be in for an exciting opening day.
In the latest financial results Uber reported a $1.1 billion loss in the three months ending in September and brought in revenue of $3 billion for the latest quarter. The company has raised $16 billion from investors including Toyota, Saudi Arabia’s Investment Fund and Softbank.
The company has operations in 785 Metropolitan areas and has an estimated 100 million customers and a 69% market share in the United States. Uber is a major innovator in self driving technology and has been investing heavily into research and has inked notable partnerships with Volvo and Ford. If they are successful with this endeavor the company can essentially remove drivers (their employees) from their operations and increase profits significantly in the next decade.
The company has been scorned for unethical practises, toxic work environment and poor treatment of employees since its founding. Just this year a Uber self driving car ran over an innocent woman in Arizona and it was revealed that the company was testing self driving cars in secret and without a regard for the public’s safety.
In 2014 Uber was accused of booking thousands of fake rides from Lyft in an effort to cut into its profits and disrupt their operation. Uber recruiters have also been aggressively head hunting Lyft drivers in another effort to hurt their small rival. Uber was also accused of trying to profit from a New York protest against the President’s travel ban in 2017, which led to the #deleteuber social media campaign. A full list of controversies is included here.
In 2016 Uber sold its Uber China operations to Chinese ride hailing company Didi, losing $2 billion on the investment and eliminating it’s plans to expand operations in the World’s second largest economy.
Being around since 2009 and having expanded around the world in a dramatic fashion Uber is here to stay and makes a great investment. The only questions is the valuation that you are willing to pay and if you can look past some of the unethical practises that the company undertakes on seemingly consistent basis.
Lyft was most recently valued at US$15 billion and has so far raised a total of US$5.1 billion in funding. Key investors in the company include General Motors, Alphabet and Fidelity. The company has raised significantly less capital but has not expanded outside of North America. Lyft operates in 300 cities in the US and has recently expanded into Canada. Lyft was launched in 2012 and is positioned as the more socially conscious ride sharing option.
Research group Second Measure shows that Lyft is second in ride-sharing market share in the US with a total of 29% in 2018. The stats show that its closing in on its rival and expanding market share every year.

Uber vs. Lyft
Uber’s considerably larger service area means it provides great exposure to the international ride hailing market while Lyft is only available in North America.
Uber is known for having much higher car standards while Lyft’s requirements are much less strict and but both companies offer a wide variety. Uber and Lyft compete heavily on pricing, attempting to capture more market share. For the most part the companies charge about the same rates although prices may vary from city to city. Whenever the ride demand increases, Uber adds what is known as a SURGE. The surge multiplier changes based on location, and come up to 1.3x or 2.1x to the base, time, and distance. This pricing model increases costs by seven to eight times and many customers choose Lyft because of this cost increase. Uber drivers make $13.70 per hour, and Lyft driver drivers will average $17.50 per hour.
Uber is losing market share in the US and Lyft is growing faster than it’s much larger rival. Q4 2017 vs Q4 2018 the company saw a 168% increase in revenue.

Bottom Line
Investing in an Initial Public Offering can be a lucrative opportunity. Uber and Lyft both are disrupting the traditional taxi industry and are giving their customers more convenience in how the choose to travel. This market is growing fast and does warrant some attention. An intelligent investor can use the success or failure of the company the goes public first and gauge the interest and valuation to determine if this opportunity warrants an investment.
When looking at the different stages or each company, the stagnating growth rate of Uber in North America, the controversies and the extreme valuation Lyft seems to be the better option. There is definitely more upside with Lyft due to the opportunity of global expansion and the clear advantage of lower costs, happier and better paid employees and no risks of costly controversies.

Process to fast-track COVID-19 vaccine trial follows global norms, says ICMR In the meantime, ICMR issued a statement saying that it is acting in accordance with the globally accepted norms to fast-track vaccine development for diseases of pandemic potential. Political leaders too alleged that the process was being fast-tracked so that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could make the announcement on Independence Day. But...scientific advances can never be ‘made to order’. Forcing the development of an indegenous vaccine as a cure for Covid-19, bypassing all health & safety norms, to be announced by PM Modi on Independence Day is fraught with horrendous human costs. #Covid_19 #Vaccine #ICMR pic.twitter.com/x2xbPFvRyy — Sitaram Yechury (@SitaramYechury) July 4, 2020 // // ]]> The ICMR, however, said that it is important to expedite the clinical trials for a promising indigenous vaccine in larger public interest. All other vaccine candidates across the globe have been similarly fast-tracked, it said, adding that the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has accorded permission to conduct Phase 1 and 2 (human) clinical trial of 'COVAXIN' based on in-depth scrutiny of the available data from pre-clinical studies. The statement said that the letter by ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava to principal investigators of the clinical trial sites was meant to cut unnecessary red tape, without bypassing any necessary process, and speed up recruitment of participants. Bhargava had on 2 July written to principal investigators of select medical institutions and hospitals to fast-track human clinical trial approvals for the vaccine candidate being developed in collaboration with Bharat Biotech. "ICMR is committed to treat the safety and interest of people of India as a topmost priority," the statement further said.
