1934 Classics at the Air Terminal - Stan Stokes
Stan Stokes, in his painting, 1934 American Classics, beautifully portrays a Hollywood movie star and her pet dog embarking on a chartered Ford Trimotor from the Grand Central Air Terminal (owned and operated by Curtis-Wright) in California. Probably bound for a weekend visit to San Simeon, the palatial retreat of the publishing magnate, William Randolph Hearst, the trip to San Luis Obispo will take only ninety minutes. The early afternoon rains have left puddles on the tarmac, but fair skies have returned to the San Gabriel mountains, and the trip should be a smooth one. During the Great Depression the Packard Company introduced some of its most stunning and high performance automobiles. The 1934 Packard LeBaron Speedster, pictured in the painting, was one such machine. Costing nearly $8,000 the Packard LeBaron Speedster was about two to three times the price of a nice three bedroom house. Only the very wealthy could afford such luxuries during the Depression. Note that the Speedsters fenders are reminiscent of the wheel covers on racing planes during the era of the Thompson Trophy Air Races. The Speedster was powered by a 160 HP V-12 engine which displaced 445 cubic inches. Around this time it is believed that among the Hollywood notables that owned Packard Speedsters were both Clark Gable and Douglas Fairbanks. The Ford Trimotor was introduced in 1926 and between 1926 and 1933 Ford produced approximately 200 of these capable aircraft. Ford Trimotors remained in service long after they were made technically obsolete by more modern aircraft, and it is reputed that one aircraft built in 1928 was still in regular service as late as 1970. Admiral Byrd utilized a 4-AT version of the Trimotor for his 1929 Antarctic expedition. The Ford Trimotor played an important role in introducing commercial aviation to the general public during the years of the Great Depression. The basic model carried eleven passengers and a crew of two, had a cruising speed of 107 MPH, an operational ceiling of 16,500 feet, and a range of 570 miles. Due to its corrugated metal exterior skin the Trimotor was affectionately known as the Tin Goose. The Tin Goose had a wingspan of nearly 78 feet, and was fifty feet in length. In 1930 Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA) began the first coast-to-coast commercial service utilizing Ford Trimotors. The trip took only thirty-six hours, if the weather was cooperative

In the heart of America's rugged landscapes, a new breed of 4x4 vehicles is making headlines, promising to take your adventures off the beaten path to the next level. With the market more crowded than ever, discerning which vehicle will serve as your next expedition ally can be as challenging as the terrains you aim to conquer. Today, we delve into the world of the most sought-after 4x4s, from the iconic designs of the Land Rover Defender to the family-centric Jeep Grand Cherokee, each boasting features that set them apart in a fiercely competitive arena.

This isn't merely a comeback; it's a declaration of war against the Jeep Wrangler, equipped with a Bronco Raptor variant that houses a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 engine, ready to tackle any challenge thrown its way.
Then there's the 2024 Land Rover Defender, which commands attention not just with its starting price of $57,875 but with a design that nods respectfully to its predecessors while embracing the future. For families who live for the thrill of exploration without sacrificing comfort, the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee emerges as the front-runner. With a base price of $41,330 and a 293-hp V-6 engine, it promises a blend of overlanding capability and everyday utility, ensuring that every trip is memorable.
The 2024 Jeep Wrangler, priced from $33,990, continues to uphold its legacy as the quintessential off-roader. Factory-equipped to navigate through almost any terrain and updated to offer modern comforts, the Wrangler demonstrates that practicality and adventure can go hand in hand.
Not to be overlooked, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner, with a starting price of $41,350, maintains its stronghold on reliability in the 4x4 segment. Its longstanding presence since 2009, coupled with a massive fanbase and robust aftermarket support, cements its reputation as a durable companion for the long haul.
For those seeking an all-encompassing solution, the Chevrolet Tahoe starts at $56,095 and doesn't disappoint. It merges the toughness of a truck-like chassis with a genuine four-wheel drive system, offering the capability to tow over 8,000 pounds and accommodate up to nine passengers, making it the epitome of versatility.
As we explore these titans of the 4x4 world, it becomes evident that each vehicle offers a unique proposition. More Profit From Almost Nothing
Manufacturing is a simple formula. You take a small amount of material, mold or shape it into something unique and sell it for many hundreds of times more money than the material cost you. A Rolex has maybe $40 worth of raw materials. Carefully designed and constructed, it is worth thousands when complete, many times that when fashionable. So too with cars.
The problem with the car industry is that they are convinced that the formula works so well that they want to make more money but there are only so many customers. Everyone either has or uses a car. Out of the 350,000,000 Americans of all ages – babies and non-drivers -- there already are 278,063,737 personal and commercial vehicles. So the problem facing car manufacturers trying to make more and more profit is that either they have to try and sell two cars to every driver or they have to make the cars much more expensive, thereby making more profit.
The manufacturers chose the latter solution.
How do you make the car more expensive and thereby profitable? Remember the formula: take 10¢ of steel, shape it and sell it for $1.00. Now, there are exceptions to this rule. First you can create a mystique about Bentley, Mercedes, BMW and the like and get an extra 10% for “beat-the-Jones” show-off value. But 10% is not enough to satisfy Wall Street investors. Or you can make very limited numbers of a model to create extra demand like Ferrari and Porsche. Or you can stick to the manufacturing profit model and simply add more and more steel and other components.
It all started to get out of hand with Ralph Nader who declared the ’69 Corsair “unsafe at any speed.” The Corsair was the only US manufactured rear engine car. Kill the Corsair and you effectively killed the other “unsafe” car, the VW Beetle. The Corsair weighed 2,414 lbs. The VW Beetle weighed only 1,742 lbs. and out-performed and was more reliable. But that Nader label of “unsafe” effectively killed the US market for the rear-engined Beetle. VW’s answer was to put the motor back in front, add almost another ton of steel, and relaunch the Beetle. More steel equaled a higher price and more profit.
Meanwhile, Chevy and Ford sedans in the mid-‘60s weighed 2,600 lbs. By 2022 they had ballooned up to 3,500 lbs. More material, more profit. VW Jetta’s are 50% heavier than when launched. Camry weighed 2,161 lbs. when launched in 1982, now weigh in at 3,310 lbs. In the SUV market, 2023 weights are getting up close to 6,000 lbs. or 3 tons for Tahoes and Expeditions.
And then along came electric cars.
Instead of going back to lighter, less bulky chassis, they simply stuck the new motor(s) and all those batteries in conventional platforms, adding another 300 lbs. even though they had removed the engine and gearbox – hardly lightweight components – and had reduced the overall size of the car by 20%. And Tesla? The lightest is 4,048 lbs. with the Model X at 5,390 lbs. And the prices for these increases in weight? Pretty much in lock step. More metal and plastic costs you more.
Now here’s the question we all need to ask ourselves: given today’s technology providing reliability mechanically (which is also lighter than old cast-iron engines), wouldn’t it be nice to have a reasonably heavy car instead of a gas guzzling heavyweight or an electric car that can only go 200 miles? Put today’s engine into a 1968 Volvo weighing 2,500 lbs. and you’d get 50 mpg and all the safety needed. Put an electric drivetrain in an original VW Beetle and you’d get 400-mile range with half the batteries of a Tesla. Or do as Ford is doing, stripping out all the unessentials, and launching the Maverick small truck with a base price of $22,000. Now that’s a business model to suit today’s consumer.

I have a story to tell. The conclusion has not yet happened, but it's some funny shit.
So, Monday night at 8p, I dropped my car off at a person's private shop in the town I used to live in. It was showing symptoms of a cracked head gasket and also--because I checked oil as well--had very little oil in it. I had bought product to address these issues from the AutoZone I had parked behind when my engine started "idling violently", as I would put it, whenever I was stopped at a light. However, I didn't use them because this person had told me to drop it off at his shop so he could check it in the morning.
My car was not there in the morning, at 6:30a. What was there was a 1999 Ford Expedition with the keys still in the ignition. And so the son of the shop owner took pictures of said vehicle, including tags, to send to his father all, "Who dis?" They did not know who dat was. They did, however incorrectly, think that I knew who it was. And that that person had come to collect my car.
Shortly thereafter, the Expedition vanished as well, presumably reacquired by the fucker who stole my car.
"Did you leave the keys--" In the car for the shop owner to be able to use them come morn? Yes. There were other cars on the lot that had keys in them, as well. I guess mine just looked cooler.
We're informed that my car is gone at 1p. We rush to that town's police department and file a report. Yada yada. And because I am able to give the police the fucker's tags, I get to overhear the man's name for whom the Expedition is registered to. I tell everyone I know, as well as give them pictures of his and my vehicle, while the police go to two separate houses the man is associated with and also suspect another guy he knows that runs a "shady car business" in the town over.
Because my car had a potentially fucked head gasket and practically no oil in it--my oil light don't work good, leave me alone--we suspect it DID NOT go far, and drive towards the town of the "shady car business" as well as another town...which my father discovered was where Criminal was trying to sell...the Ford Expedition...he was driving around committing crimes in. Alas, my car was not on the side of the road.
The following day, Wednesday, a former coworker texts me and says he saw the Expedition. Gave me the location where it was driving around--a stone's throw from where the shop they stole mine from is--and gave me a vague physical description of who was driving. White guy with a beard and a woman, both of whom "look pretty rough."
I already know from the cops that Criminal is a meth head. I don't need to wonder why they look rough. And I also don't need to wonder too hard about why they stole my car. The people I know who've been on meth, for some unknown reason to my drug-free ass, loved to steal anything they thought was worth something. And hoard those things. Until they thought the cops couldn't find them. And then they'd sell those things to, shocker, get more meth.
Anyway, having been told where the vehicle was hanging around, I surmise that these fuckers either live very near the shop my car was stolen from, or their drug dealer does, and that my car's chances of still being in that town are very high.
Because these meth heads are really fucking stupid. I may leave my keys in my car for a shopkeep, but I don't leave my vehicle at the scene of the crime I have just committed in broad daylight. And I certainly don't return for that vehicle, which is sitting on private property, and assume that no one has noticed it being there. Or taken pictures of it and its tags.
👍
But I also don't steal cars FROM AN AUTO SHOP, WHERE VEHICLES GO TO GET REPAIRED, AND EXPECT TO MAKE IT VERY FAR IN THEM.
👍👍👍👍
Thursday! At this point, I have a small army of coworkers and our store's vendors BOLO-ing my car with precise instructions to immediately call the police if they see a BRIGHT ORANGE Grand Am GT anywhere. There is exactly one of those in the city it was lost in. (Again, brilliant choice by the thieves.) And I go to a used car lot, and then the bank, to try and purchase a very pretty blue 2018 Hyundai Elantra. I shall have it on Monday.
Thursday night, the shop owner informs us that...Genius Criminal is STILL trying to sell/trade his Ford Expedition. The one that they used while stealing my car. And left at a crime scene for more than an hour. And I have a very sneaking suspicion that the police did, in fact, read the email I sent them showing the Buy, Sell, or Trade ad for said vehicle under the guy's name. Because shop owner didn't know about it. But the police did. And they got with the shop owner to do a sting operation to offer to meet this guy and "trade" him a car...while they follow him. Today. Friday.
So, yeah. That's how my week has gone. Hopefully they find my car and it's in one piece. Regardless, Criminal is about to have a bad time. And alls I can say is: Don't steal from me. If I'd gotten that Elantra yesterday, I would have found that fucker before the cops did. Hell, I went on Google Maps a bit last night for the road the Expedition was seen on to see if I could find it parked in a driveway.
I have a particular set of fucking skills, mate. One of them is hyperfocus, and you have my attention, boy.

President Biden's rented Secret Service vehicles burst into flames in a parking lot Monday, just one day after he left his Nantucket vacation.
Biden spent Thanksgiving on the ritzy Massachusetts island with his family last week. The Secret Service rented five vehicles from Hertz to carry the president and his family, and all five of them caught fire in the parking lot, according to footage first obtained by the Nantucket Current.
Footage shows firefighters spraying down the smoldering remains of one vehicle's engine block. The five vehicles included a Chevy Suburban, Ford Explorer, Infiniti QX80, Ford Expedition, and a Jeep Gladiator.
The vehicles were parked at the Nantucket airport and the blaze reportedly spread to just 40 feet away from the facility's jet fuel tanks. It is currently unknown what caused the fire. Fox News reached out to the  White House for information, but they did not immediately respond.
NEWSOM WON'T CHALLENGE BIDEN IN 2024, SAYS HE IS ‘ALL IN’ ON PRESIDENT'S RE-ELECTION
"At approximately 5:22 am Airport shift staff observed an active fire in the rental car overflow area through the Airport's Closed Circuit Television System," the airport said in a statement to the Current. "Staff activated the Alert system and responded to the fire in Airport-3, where they were met by responding units from Nantucket Fire Department and Nantucket Police Department."
BILL BENNETT SAYS BIDEN ADMINISTRATION 'TURNED A BLIND EYE' TO FENTANYL CRISIS
"Combined fire resources responded and contained the fire. Several vehicles were damaged. The Airport is currently coordinating with rental car agencies and agency partners to ensure scene safety, There is no longer an active fire at this time: the Airport is open, and aeronautical operations are not affected," the statement continued.
Biden spent the Nantucket weekend celebrating the holiday with his family, telling reporters that they were not having any discussions about a potential presidential run in 2024.
The Bidens stayed at a waterfront compound along Nantucket Harbor. The family members on the trip included Ashley and Hunter Biden. The family has a more than 40-year tradition of spending Thanksgiving on the island.
The getaway was the first vacation for the Biden family since they went to another secluded East Coast island in August, when the President, first lady, and Hunter Biden all flew on Air Force One to Kiawah Island in South Carolina.
Outings around major holidays and in the late summer are not uncommon for U.S. presidents. Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump all took similar vacations throughout their time in office. Bush would often spend the time at his Texas ranch, while Obama and Trump both preferred golf resorts in New England.

Many would later transfer to Cleveland later that year.NASA “[On December 15, 1941] a few shivering, startled Southerners from Langley, the vanguard of those in the Power Plants Division transferring to Cleveland, arrived in the biggest snowstorm in years,” recalled former receptionist Mary Louise Gosney. This vanguard was the first large group of NACA employees to relocate from the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory to the new Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory (AERL).  As construction of the AERL proceeded over the next two years, larger factions followed suit. Langley employees not only designed and constructed the AERL but formed the core of the Laboratory’s leadership and research staff for three decades. For the newcomers, the mid-December snowstorm was a dramatic change from Virginia, where temperatures had reached 60 degrees Fahrenheit just days before. The challenge of acclimation to the northern climate, however, paled in comparison to the tumult resulting from Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and the Philippines just eight days before. The United States was now involved in World War II on two fronts, and there was a new urgency to get the NACA’s new engine research laboratory operational. The military was relying on the AERL to resolve a host of propulsion issues for its aircraft. Nearly a year beforehand, in January 1941, Langley construction engineer Charles Herrmann had relocated to Cleveland with Helen Ford, an administrative assistant from NACA Headquarters. From a 19th-century farmhouse on the barren AERL site, they managed the construction contracting and inspections. Meanwhile, in a room above Langley’s Structural Research Laboratory, a team of civil engineers designed the AERL’s test facilities and other structures. In August 1941, the NACA decided to transfer the Chief of Langley’s Construction Division, Edward Raymond Sharp, to Cleveland to expedite the work. Temporary offices constructed inside the hangar to house the architectural and drafting personnel as well the machines shops.NASA/GRC The Langley arrivals of December 1941, which included inspectors, engineers, draftsmen, mechanics, and administrative staff, were stationed in temporary offices inside the aircraft hangar—the only completed building. Sharp negotiated a key contract with a new construction company in the ensuing weeks that provided a breakthrough in the work. The first test facility was operational in May 1942. One after another, the other buildings and facilities were completed during the following year, and the former Langley staff left the hangar for their permanent offices. In the fall of 1942, units of the Langley engine research staff began transferring to Cleveland. What had been modest-size sections in Langley’s Power Plants Division were expanded to full divisions in Cleveland. These divisions, led by experienced Langley engineers, included Addison Rothrock’s Fuels and Lubrication Division, Benjamin Pinkel’s Thermodynamics Division, Ernest Whitney’s Engine Installation Division, Charles Moore’s Engine Research Division, Oscar Schey’s Supercharger Division, and Joseph Vensel’s Flight Research Division. Ray Sharp in his in December 1946. He began his NACA career at Langley in 1922 and transferred to the Cleveland lab in August 1941.NASA In a somewhat surprising move, the NACA assigned construction manager Ray Sharp the responsibility for running the laboratory on a permanent basis. At Langley and Ames, technically skilled engineers performed that task. Sharp, who had a law degree but no formal scientific or engineering background, was assisted by Executive Engineers Carlton Kemper and Addison Rothrock. Sharp managed the day-to-day activities, while Rothrock and Kemper supervised the research. In 1949, Abe Silverstein, who had helped design and operate Langley’s Full Scale Wind Tunnel, became Chief of Research. Although the AERL was continually hiring new researchers in the 1940s and 1950s, the ex-Langley personnel provided the laboratory’s backbone. With the arrival of the newcomers, more and more of the Langley veterans moved into the management ranks. Nearly all of the division chiefs and upper-management positions during the NACA era were occupied by former Langley people. The relatively small size of the AERL staff and the fact that many of them were new to northeast Ohio resulted in a close community. Everyone knew nearly everyone else, families were started, and lifelong friendships formed. Sharp and his wife Vera were parental figures who looked after the employees and participated in the staff dances, sporting events, and other social activities. Members of the Old Timers Club, all former Langley employees, meet for their annual luncheon in March 1948. Back row, left to right: Harold Gerrish, Achilles Gellales, Clarence Decker, Carlton Kemper, Hampton Foster, William Dewey. Front row, left to right: Emery Gilbert, Charles Moore, Dale McConnaha, Addison Rothrock, Oscar Schey, Arthur Tesman.NASA The transition from the NACA to NASA in 1958 brought a number of changes to the organization, including the transfer of Silverstein and a number of other key Lewis employees to Headquarters and Langley’s Space Task Group. There was also a shift from the NACA’s mostly in-house research to NASA’s management of external development contracts. The new space agency also dramatically increased the size of its staff in the early 1960s. Silverstein, who replaced Sharp as Director in 1961, knew the importance of camaraderie and successfully encouraged the older NACA veterans to interact socially with the new recruits. As NASA’s budgets decreased in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the era of Langley’s influence on Lewis came to a close. To reduce its payroll, NASA began to offer employees incentives to retire. The Langley expatriates—many of whom had over 30 years of service—ebbed away during the final years of the Apollo program. The Center struggled for nearly a decade to redefine itself and its culture. Langley’s legacy is still visible at the Center today in its inductees into the Glenn Hall of Fame, a historic district containing the original facilities, and the campus’s lack of sidewalk plots or tree lawns. The Southerners had not anticipated the need to plow snow when designing the laboratory. Robert S. Thief Slides Under SUV For Catalytic Converter, It Starts Moving
Tumblr media
When a thief spotted a parked vehicle in a secluded parking lot, he decided to seize his chance to steal its catalytic converter. After crawling under the SUV, much to his horror, he suddenly heard the engine fire up. That’s when it started moving. A California community has been left searching for a solution to an uptick in crime after a would-be catalytic converter thief made a fatal flaw. Now, investigators are warning the public to watch out for these criminals and take extra precautions to ensure an incident such as this one doesn’t happen again. The event occurred just before 6 p.m. at a secluded area on the 39000 block of 10th Street West in Palmdale. According to CBS News, deputies say a group of thieves targeted a parked SUV in a retail parking lot after they assumed it was an abandoned vehicle. Unfortunately for them, their simple mistake cost one of the suspects his life. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says that four suspects in a car pulled up into the parking spot beside a “lifted” 4×4 Ford Excursion. Then, one man exited the car and crawled under the SUV, intent on stealing the vehicle’s catalytic converter. Suddenly, the SUV’s ignition started, the Associated Press reports. Deputies say that although the SUV looked abandoned, it wasn’t empty at all. In fact, the female driver was merely napping when she awoke to the sound of sawing coming from the undercarriage of her vehicle. Panicked by the sound that woke her from her nap, the woman started the SUV and quickly threw the car in reverse. She only stopped after she realized she had run over something. “The victim woke up from the sound, turned the car on, put the vehicle in reverse, and felt a bump like she ran something over,” the department said. “She stopped immediately, leaving the suspect on the ground after running him over.” The driver immediately called 911 to get medical help for the suspect, but the damage was done. The suspect was rushed to Antelope Valley Hospital but was later pronounced dead. Luckily, the three other individuals, a man and two women, were detained by deputies. Police did not immediately release the names or charges of those involved. It was also unclear whether the female driver of the Expedition would face charges. In the last few years, the theft of catalytic converters has skyrocketed. With the rise of this particular crime, the LA County Sheriff’s Office has announced a set of tips to ward off catalytic converter theft. Police are warning car owners, especially those who own trucks or SUVs that are lifted, to be wary of thieves. They recommend parking in well-lit areas close to your home, parking inside a garage, having the catalytic converter welded to the car’s frame, engraving the vehicle’s VIN and license plate numbers on the converter, and calibrating your car alarm to activate when it detects vibration. Understandably, the community is shocked by the horrific outcome of the incident. However, it is part and parcel of a life of crime. When an individual engages in criminal activity, especially the theft of private property, they take their life into their own hands. The tragic event highlights the dangers of such a crime for both the suspect and the victim. Fortunately, the car owner wasn’t physically harmed in the process. Of course, the suspect paid the ultimate price for a quick buck. Read the full article
