Hmm interesting. I think you're talking about the round, concave structure?

I suspect this is actually a fracture pattern, rather than a fossil. From the pictures I think I see the pattern crossing mutliple layers, something which fossils generally don't really do.

The round shape does almost look organic, like an infill of a shell or something similar. However, then, you often still see some organic structures popping up (like the fossil below (a bivalve, note the rib impressions in the rock))

It could also be a concretion, a round rock formed within another rock, often as a result of material gathering around biogenic material. However, concretions, in my experience are often made from a different material than the host rock, which is not the case here.

As you found it in an archeological site, it being an artifact cannot be closed out, since I sadly know little to nothing about archaeological artefacts.

The schist in the region however, indicates that the rock there is low-grade metamorphic, meaning the rocks have been underneath the surface and underwent changes due to the heat and pressure from rocks below and above. Fossils do not often survive this process, as they're deformed, squished and remineralized during this process. (Chances of finding a fossil in high-metamorphic rock is even smaller, though)

Which, it turns out, is actually not a fossil but a concoidal fracture pattern. Some examples of these types of fractures:

These types of fractures are the result of the material of which a rock or mineral consists and how the rock is broken apart. They are most common in glass or in basalts, however, I've seen them in mudrock and limestone as well.

Long story short: You likely did not find a fossil, however, you did find a cool rock and that's what's important! :)

I got a mosasaur tooth for my cabinet of curiosities!!!

She was just sitting there in the display, looking so beautiful.... 🥰 She's about 3" long and not quite an inch wide at the base of the tooth.

Idk the species yet, but I posted on fossilid to see if anyone can help. I figured I'd just look it up on the interwebs. How hard could it be? 🙄 Turns out mosasaur taxonomy is not easy. Lmao
