“It’s hot in Topeka!” - Bloo, Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends.

Hey, do you remember this irritating little turd?
Tumblr media
Yeah, that one. From Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. Remember how it was frequently annoying how he was constantly antagonistic towards his friends, made his own best friend be constantly annoyed by him, and was just sometimes the worst character in the show? Turns out that there's a reason for that.
Apparently, Craig McCracken WANTED Bloo to experience this neat little writing trick called "Character Development." But Cartoon Network, wanting more of an episodic sitcom, gave a big fat no to that idea. Because they wanted this series to have no continuity, they had to make sure that the characters couldn't develop. And that is...nonsense for a number of reasons.
#1
These shows came out the same time as Foster's:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The continuity wasn't MAJOR with these shows, you can still watch any episode at random from either of them and still have a good time. BUT they still had this sense of subtle progression where characters, villains, and little touches in the story. Granted, they're both more along the lines of action adventure stories instead of sitcoms, but KND is a lot more or less the same as Foster's in terms of characters going on goofy adventures and being a comedy for kids. It just so happened that the comedy could be taken a little seriously at times. Besides...
#2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sitcoms CAN have character development and continuity. You can watch any episode of either of these shows too, BUT there's a noticeable sense of character progression and continuity from all of them. Sometimes it's something simple as a character dating someone else at a certain point or a change in location or even when a character is working a certain job or not. Character development and continuity can still exist and work in making an episode enjoyable without previous context, but seeing these characters grow, even in subtle ways, is great. Mainly because...
#3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Character development is NOT a bad thing. Far from it, in fact. If anything, it makes watching a show more interesting as you can look back at how a character USED to act with a fond nostalgia of "Man, remember when they used to act like THAT?" And then look at how they CURRENTLY act with the sense of, "Wow, this character's really grown up in the last few seasons." And while it feels SLOW in some cases, it gives the sense that the character can learn, grow, and BE BETTER despite how they might have started off. Even Foster's understood this, because...
#4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Show HAS character development AND continuity. Like how Cheese just didn't exist in the show until a certain point and became a main stay for the entire series. Or how Goo was introduced as another main stay character. Not only that, but after her introduction as this overly imaginative little girl, she learned her lesson to cool down her over imagination so she wouldn't cause the exact same problems in the future but still faced a NEW problem with her imagination that she and the others could learn from. Like it or not, that IS character development AND continuity. It's just that other characters can experience it instead of Bloo. But fine. They wanted to make Bloo a stagnant character who never changes? Sure. I can accept that...Except for one last thing.
#5
Tumblr media
DID THEY HAVE TO MAKE HIM SO IRREDEEMABLE?! In fairness, the bus episode IS entertaining, but that still shows how Bloo, as a character, went through regression instead of development. He's not the same as he started in the first season. Heck, he's not the same as he was in the FIRST THREE EPISODES. There, he was written as brash and a bit immature, but still apologetic and polite in certain spaces. He was even about to object to Wilt giving him the bed, but Wilt was too polite to let Bloo refuse his offer. If this was the Bloo in future seasons, he would have guilt tripped Wilt into giving him the bed and would have been the first to suggest Wilt would sleep on the floor.
If the show wasn't allowed to make Bloo develop, I can understand that. Networks and studios can kiss all the asses. But when it got to the point where I couldn't understand why Mac was friends with Bloo anymore, it leaves me wondering why they had to highlight his worst qualities instead of his best ones? To quote MY favorite character in this show, "I'm sorry, but that is NOT okay." The writers have my sympathy, it's not easy trying to appease your network overlords while still making the show good. But if Bloo's an example of anything, it's that studios should trust showrunners more and that character development is NEVER a sin.

Tumblr media
I got the new Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends dvd set for Christmas and I want to give a heads up to any other fans.
Tumblr media
So starting off the first few seasons are identical to the old discs. The second season is incredibly rare so it's just nice to have these. Same small extras and everything.
Tumblr media
Season 4 is a mess. A dvd basically has to be 720x480 but can be 4x3 or 16x9 by telling the player to stretch or squish. You should never ever have black bars on the side of a dvd. It throws away resolution and you don't have a lot to begin with. Maybe a bigger problem is the ghosting. Whoever mastered this season didn't know how to handle interlaced video and every single bit of movement looks like this.
Tumblr media
The good news is that the final 2 seasons are full wide screen. I did a lot of checking to make sure these weren't cropped from a 4x3 frame, but it turns out they're 16x9 native and the streaming version is cropped. That really makes this the best way to watch season 5 & 6.
I can be a bit of a snob when it comes to these things, but the show's style of sharp flats with no outlines can become a blurry mess if not handled right. It really looks like a show designed for the HD era that came out too early.

1 channel down, 1 to go
Through the years, Cartoon Network Studios produced original shows for both Cartoon Network & its late night block Adult Swim respectively. Soon when I started working animation in Los Angeles County, California, Cartoon Network Studios will produce original shows for Boomerang sometime next year. Since 2015, Warner Bros. Animation produced original shows for Boomerang such as New Looney Tunes & the Wacky Races reboot. After the premiere of the third & final season of the Animaniacs reboot on Hulu 11 months ago, none of the Boomerang original shows were produced by Cartoon Network Studios. That will have to change when I come to the studio at the new & current Second Century building in Burbank, California to produced a Cartoon Network crossover show by mixing characters from the past Cartoon Network original shows that I watched as a kid & designing new characters for it, & the art style I use will be inspired by Genndy Tartakovsky, Craig McCracken, Chris Savino & more. A Cartoon Network crossover show will possibly be not only on Boomerang in the United States, but a Max original (formerly HBO Max) late next year. Also, Cartoon Network Studios will produce shorts based on Dexter’s Laboratory early next year. In addition to the proposed shorts with Dexter & his annoying sister Dee Dee, Mee Mee & Lee Lee will have shorts of their own making it the first Dexter’s Lab spin-off. The shorts I’ll wrote at Cartoon Network Studios will premiere on Cartoon Network, Boomerang & Amazon Prime Video early next year, after the premiere of second season of Tiny Toon Looniversity on Cartoon Network & Max (streaming service). & then, Cartoon Network Studios will produce direct-to-video films which will be released on DVD & Blu-ray between early 2025 & late 2026. Cartoon Network Studios always made television films based on shows since 1999, although Warner Bros. released The Powerpuff Girls Movie in theaters back in 2002. When Michael Ouweleen’s once again in charge of Cartoon Network & Sam Register’s now the Cartoon Network Studios president since 3 years & 4 months ago, I’ll be sure J. G. Quintel won’t be involved in my projects ether. By the way, my future projects will have the current aspect ratio of 16:9 (1.78:1) & 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound (only used for streaming). Before I write scripts & designing new characters at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, California, I’ll make student animated short films at the Animation Academy in the same location which will be released during & after the Japanese premieres of new episodes & shows of American TV cartoons that premiered in the United States 3 years ago & before & during the premiere of the second season of Tiny Toon Looniversity on Cartoon Network & Max. After this year, Dexter & Dee Dee will soon be better than Pinky & the Brain. To me, The Powerpuff Girls (1998 TV series), Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends & The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack are the only Cartoon Network original shows on Boomerang in the United States as of now. Some classic Cartoon Network shows like Juniper Lee in its uncropped 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio (1.78:1) should air on Boomerang this winter, as well as My Gym Partner’s a Monkey. Both Cartoon Network & Boomerang are owned by the Cartoon Network Group of Warner Bros. Discovery Networks U.S., a division of Warner Bros. Discovery. By the way, the 22 minute mark for animated shows will be better than the 11 minute mark.

Are there any shows that you liked as a kid but nowadays do not consider to be as good as you remember?
Oh yeah, plenty. Teamo Supremo, Dexter's Lab Seasons 3&4, Skunk Fu, Sabrina The Animated Series, Chop Socky Chocks, most of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Robotboy, and Fairly Oddparents for the most part.

Thoughts on every season of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends:
Season 1 - Great introductory season. The show’s still coming into its’ own but it started out amazing with “House of Bloo’s”. That pilot movie alone was enough to let you know “oh yeah, this show is gonna be special” (I remember our local newspaper having articles about it- the day after it premiered, I remember my mom putting the front of the entertainment section in front of my cereal bowl...Foster’s was THE main story!) One of the most amusing things about it looking back are how different some of the voices are- same voice actors, but you have Bloo with a lower and more relaxed voice and Mac with a higher, more childlike one (I prefer how Bloo sounded in the earlier episodes, meanwhile I’m a little more used to how Mac would sound later on). Also I miss the “nicer” Bloo from the first season!
Season 2 - Season 1 was really good but this is when the show REALLY started to shine. Some of my favorite episodes came from this season. We were introduced to Cheese, Mac’s sugar condition, and “Orlando Bloo”. Bloo’s voice got higher and midway through the season, Mac’s voice broke. I think this might just be my favorite season of the show overall. And “The Sweet Stench of Success” is probably my all-time favorite episode of the entire series. It just has that perfect balance of humor and emotional moments that won me over in the pilot movie.
Season 3 - While still with some good episodes, this might have been the weakest season overall. While some good episodes premiered this season, the best one probably being “A Lost Claus” (which is still one of my favorite Christmas specials in general), this was also the season with some of the worst and most mean-spirited episodes of the show, like “Imposter’s Home for Um...Make ‘Em Up Pals” and “Foster’s Goes to Europe”. Even episodes that I did kinda enjoy had at least something that brought them down, like “Duchess of Wails” having a crappy ending despite having a lot of parts I liked, and “Go Goo Go” had that annoying part over everyone thinking Goo and Mac were an item, much to Mac’s annoyance, and then them blaming him for Goo continuously coming over...yeah, Goo’s a wonderful character but I really wish her introduction episode was handled a little better. Not a terrible season, but there was a much more mean-spirited streak to it that didn’t feel right.
Season 4 - Much better than season 3 with some REALLY iconic episodes coming from this season, such as “Squeeze the Day” and “Good Wilt Hunting”. Also it was nice to see Goo again since she didn’t appear for the rest of S3 after “Go Goo Go”. If anything brought it down though, it was “I Only Have Surprise for You”- like how Frankie was treated horribly for all of “Imposter’s Home for Um...Make ‘Em Up Pals”, this one does the same to Mac, and it’s just painful to watch (especially since Mac is one of those characters I tend to get kinda maternal over- he’s just so sweet but goes through so much). The whole thing felt like one of those later season Fairly OddParents episodes where everyone, even the nicer characters, are just assholes for no reason. BUT the good episodes outweighed that one and “Good Wilt Hunting”, which concluded the season, might be THE most emotional thing to come out of the series. And yes, this is the season that brought us “It’s hot in Topeka”, which is one of the most iconic moments in any Cartoon Network show. On another note...one of the strangest things to come out of this season was probably “Emancipation Complication”, where a pen that looks like Abe Lincoln and his crony sell all the imaginary friends into jobs so he can turn the house into a casino. And there’s a big musical number which, while kinda fun, isn’t something Foster’s tends to do at all. The wackier tone of the episode almost felt like something out of Tiny Toon Adventures. It’s...something.
Season 5 - Another favorite season of mine! An interesting thing about it is that it puts a lot of focus especially on Mac and Bloo and their friendship. Most of the season unfortunately put Wilt, Eduardo, and Coco on the sidelines, but they had a bigger focus in some of the season’s later episodes. I love “band episodes”, so “Schlock Star” is one of my personal favorites (”Talk to the Jeans” is still an amazing song). Mac and Bloo’s friendship is one of my favorite things about the show and I could analyze the two to hell and back, so I loved how “The Bride to Beat” and “Affair Weather Friends” showed more of Bloo’s fear of Mac outgrowing him in the former and Mac’s fear of Bloo ditching him for another kid in the latter (specifically, Mac imagining Bloo saying “I’m TIRED OF YOU!” to him was pretty heartbreaking). Another great episode was “The Bloo Superdude and the Magic Potato of Power!”, which my friends and I quoted constantly after it aired. “The Buck Swaps Here” was also pretty fun and felt like one of the earlier episodes in the best way possible. “The Little Peas” was a letdown though- while not one of the WORST episodes, it did end up ruining the end of “The Big Cheese” (of which the episode is a POV switch to Peas, an imaginary friend who was never seen before this one). After the 2006 all-day Foster’s marathon on Thanksgiving Day led up to “Good Wilt Hunting” and 2008′s Thanksgiving CN marathon (which was the only time a new episode premiered on the holiday that wasn’t preceded by a marathon of the show) led up to “Destination Imagination”, this was...underwhelming. Oh well.
Season 6 - One thing I remember the most about S6 was how Cartoon Network REALLY screwed with the show around this time. After “Race for Your Life, Mac and Bloo”, the show was taken off the schedule for months, with some episodes only showing up for holiday airings (”Nightmare on Wilson Way” for Halloween, “A Lost Claus” for Christmas, and “Setting a President” for Election Day 2008) and then “Destination Imagination” premiering on Thanksgiving (speaking of which, this was the season where THAT Macy’s performance took place. You know the one). And then finally burning the final five episodes off in a marathon on a Sunday in May (which fortunately, they DID advertise), before the show was unceremoniously removed and replaced with horrible live-action shows. And how “Race for Your Life, Mac and Bloo” actually had the viewers vote on the CN site for the outcome of the race with two endings animated for it- I voted for Mac (surprise, surprise), expected Bloo to win since he’s more popular especially with CN’s main audience, and was really excited when Mac won (Bloo’s ending would later be shown on the CN site). Other than that, this season was mostly just...okay. Some really funny episodes here and there like “Jackie Khones and the Case of the Overdue Library Crook” and “Race for Your Life, Mac and Bloo”, and “Destination Imagination” was an absolutely amazing movie that might have been the darkest and most intense we’ve seen the show (when 12-year-old me saw the “TV-PG” rating in the corner of a show that was normally Y7...that’s when you knew shit was getting real), most of the season just didn’t really “stand out” as much and felt like the “spark” might have been going. For a finale, “Goodbye to Bloo” I’m pretty mixed on. While I feel like a show like this could’ve done something bigger with a little more drama (since the show handles emotional episodes really well)...it does at least leave the door open for a continuation (and if if ever did, CN needs to hire Craig McCracken and Lauren Faust back because I don’t want a repeat of PPG 2016). And that very last shot of the house erasing itself (being the intro in reverse) and the “Thanks for watching!” drawing during the credits...13-year-old me was not okay for a while and I don’t think she recovered. Especially since a very dark period of CN followed...fortunately Adventure Time premiered the next year.

I'm now ready to talk about how awful the episode I Only Have Surprise for You in Foster’s is.
Disclaimer: These are just my opinions, NOT facts. Respect my opinion and I will respect yours. And I love this show with all my heart, it’s one of my favorites. But even the best cartoons have their sour moments. Let’s begin, shall we?
The only episode I hate the most, and I mean THE MOST so far in Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, is I Only Have Surprise for You in Season 4 Episode 5.
Tumblr media
I’m just going to get this horrendous episode over with. Because this episode-goodness gracious-is downright AWFUL. Literally unbearable. Before I scream and rant, let’s talk about the plot.
So the beginning of the episode is Mac going to the house. He sees Bloo acting weird and suspicious and realizes that today Bloo has a surprise party ready for Mac. Mac hates this because on these days, the parties Bloo makes always humiliate him, as seen in these three clips. First, I’m gonna point out a few things wrong I see with these scenes already.
Tumblr media
First clip: To start, why would ANY normal kid-especially 8-year olds-laugh and giggle in delight seeing their classmate naked? In real life, most kids in elementary school would be covering their eyes and going “Ewww” at the mere sight of nudity. It's just a strange scene in general. What's so funny about an eight-year-old boy being naked with his ass out? I will never know.
Tumblr media
Second clip: This is an issue with the third clip too, but I would like to point it out here early on. So in this clip, alongside Bloo and the group of kids, you see Terrence AND the mom ganging up on Mac.
The problem with Terrence being included in this scene is that it weirdly implies that he WORKED TOGETHER with BLOOREGARD Q KAZOO out of all people to help humiliate his brother. If anything, Terrence would just beat up and humiliate both boys, as he beats them up in the PILOT EPISODE OF THIS SHOW.
Now the problem with his Mom helping out with the prank is that his mom is a no-nonsense kind of woman who doesn’t deal with childish things like the pranks Bloo did on Mac. Why in the world would she help Bloo out with such stupid pranks? Especially a prank where it involves MAKING A THIRD-GRADER’S MOUTH BURN WITH HOT SAUCE DISGUISED AS KETCHUP? Mac’s mom may have done stupid things like making a young child give up his imaginary friend, but she's not dumb enough to purposefully harm her kid. She still clearly cares about her two sons.
Tumblr media
Third clip: I don’t have a lot to say except that Mac could've avoided being humiliated in a way. He could've either wrapped the ballet dress around his waist instead of wearing it, or he could’ve used the shower curtain as a towel.
After that little montage, we see Mac getting increasingly more and more nervous about his party before he goes Rambo mode after eavesdropping on the gang planning a party and decides to destroy and ruin the party in the only funny parts of this episode.
But then he finds out that the party was actually for Artie, a toddler that Goo “created”. Feeling bad after everyone chews him out for ruining a toddler’s 4th birthday party, Mac decides to make it up to him by fixing up the party. During this, I’d like to point out one funny scene that made me laugh a bit before I head on to the worst parts of the episode.
Tumblr media
While planning the party, Bloo says that Artie likes clowns. Since it’s Mac’s “fault” he ruined the party, he has to dress as one to cheer up Artie.
Now we get to the most frustrating part of the episode; the ending. While Mac entertains the toddler, it’s all revealed that the party was a prank after all. And then Bloo makes the most punchable face imaginable as he rubs it in his face that his best friend-his CREATOR-is an idiot and that Bloo will always be one step ahead.
Tumblr media
Incoming warning for an anger-induced rant here now. Viewer discretion advised, hehe.
First of all, let’s talk about the extreme out-of-character moments in this episode. Why would WILT-a character who gets so guilty about just LYING FOR A DAY in one episode, FRANKIE-a character who literally can’t stand Bloo and his annoying antics, and MR. HERRIMAN-a character who is strict and has a no-nonsense attitude, decides to participate in this mean-spirited prank?
Second of all, what did Mac do to make Bloo so spiteful to even think of doing a prank like that? Bloo may be a bratty jerk, but he still cares about his best friend. In The Bloo Superdude and the Great Creator of Everything's Awesome Ceremony of Fun That He's Not Invited To, even in a sick and delirious state he still tries to see his best friend have his birthday party. In the same episode, in Bloo’s fantasy Mac is a SUPREME OVERLORD in his eyes, showing that he respects his friend even though he doesn't outright show it. In Bye Bye Nerdy, though he was a little bit mean, despite eventually failing he does try to help Mac gain human friends, before the events of Go Goo Go. Bloo may be a brat, but he still cares about his friend.
So who’s idea was it to make Bloo THAT insufferable? The fact that there’s no real reason for Bloo to even prank Mac is a big problem with this episode. Onto the third thing!
And finally, the biggest problem is that there’s no established reason, not even a HALF-ASSED one mind you, that Mac deserves to be humiliated TWICE in one day. There’s no real reason behind it, and it’s frustrating.
See the episode Pranks for Nothing in Season 6. The reason why Bloo got pranked by his friends multiple times is because Bloo was misbehaving and acting out in the hotel room. He was ordering stuff messing around and doing things Mr. Herriman specifically told everyone not to do while they were there. He got his just desserts, AND he got punished for a reason that makes sense.
Like, there’s nothing Mac does to deserve the treatment he gets in this episode. Even in episodes where he acts out and goes wild, like Squeeze the Day and Crime After Crime, his evil crimes are…jumping on the bed and his version of a prank call is saying “this is a joke”. In this show, there’s nothing Mac during and prior the episode to even deserve the shame and humiliation he gets (I’ll give you a cookie if you understand that reference). The worst thing he did was ruining the party, and even then he had a reasonable justification to doing so (he thought he was going to be HUMILIATED BY HIS ONLY FRIENDS! How could that not be reasonable?)
In conclusion, THAT’S why I cannot stand this horrendous episode. It’s the only horrendously bad episode that makes my blood boil. EVEN THE BENDY AND GOOFBALL EPISODE HAD ME LESS ANGRY. That really makes you think.
And while I do recommend this awesome show, please, I beg you, just. Skip this episode. It’s not worth watching and it’s not worth your time. Don’t be like me when I was nine.

Note: Ten favorite monsters, part five. Part four. Why are there not more images of Coco on Google? :( She and Bloo tie for my favorite Foster’s character, but design-wise she’s more interesting! Also, I couldn’t fit the panel of Nagare sliding under the door, which really highlights Madslugs’ creepiness.
1. Kankrelats from Code Lyoko
They’re like evil potatoes.
2. Coco from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends
This show went above and beyond with the imaginary friends’ designs. I thought Coco was meant to be a bird of paradise. Also, she lays different colored plastic eggs with cool prizes.
3. Chatterer Beast from Hellraiser: Bloodline
Based off the best Cenobite (Chatterer) and animal (dog).
4. Stitch from Lilo & Stitch
Another cartoon with a great many “friend” (or “cousin”) designs. But it’s hard to beat the koala-esque original experiment.
5. Madslug from Rosario + Vampire
As a species, not Nagare Kano. Gastropod monsters are underrated. It’s too bad he used his slugginess to be a pervert. Like, he could probably hold down a girlfriend if he respected womankind.
6. Lemures/Remless from Sailor Moon SuperS
This is my favorite season because evil circus! Lemures were angry ghosts in ancient Rome. The dub name works too because of the dream theme. They’re without rapid eye movement (REM), so they’re without dreams of their own. The whole mirror motif is coolly creepy, too.
7-9. Stranger Things Upside Down monsters
Demogorgon: Humanoid with a flowery face.
Hospital Monster: If you thought Flaying couldn’t get nastier. :D Also, a The Thing reference??
Mind Flayer: Mind Flayer, Mind Flayer, Flay me a mind.
10. Dren from Spliced
My favorite stages were the first and last ones. There’s adorably animalistic, the in-between stages, then uncanny valley monster boy.
Note: The first time I heard of protogynous hermaphroditism was in the Spiderwick field guide. So I guess Dren’s part tropical fish? Imagine a MerDren.
